what does a "tru fan" get, a medal?

32

u/RavagerHughesy Dec 08 '24

It's one of the trophies you need to get the platinum for being a Gamer

15

u/Svenray Dec 08 '24

Subscription fees, full servers, and people who quit during raids.

7

u/Acapulquito Dec 09 '24

And weirdos shitting on you for failing boss mechanics

2

u/Snjuer89 Dec 08 '24

He gets to play all by himself, even though he choses the mmo

81

u/oodats Dec 08 '24

You ain't a real FF fan unless you played the FF8 tamagotchi game with the pocketstation.

11

u/dimaesh Dec 08 '24

There’s a FFVIII tamagotchi? Wow

12

u/oodats Dec 08 '24

Yeah, it doubled as a memory card and could earn you items in your FF8 save game.

11

u/dimaesh Dec 08 '24

I really really wanna get that now

8

u/ChaoCobo Dec 08 '24

If you get the old NOT Remastered version of VIII for PC you can play it. It’s called Chocobo World and it’s just a separate little program on your pc. It’s real kyoot and adorable.

2

u/bloody_ell Dec 08 '24

It was never released in the PAL region afaik, possibly not in America either. It was annoying at the time as 2 summons and the means to use them (Chocobo and Phoenix) were locked behind it for the main game. You could get the material to summon them once in game but to replenish it you needed the pocketstation.

3

u/Ligma_Spreader Dec 08 '24

I want one now.

u/stratusnco Dec 08 '24

a real ff fan lets others enjoy the franchise without being gatekeepers.

83

u/Air_92 Dec 08 '24

Big true, don't let yourself be put down by anybody.

Chances are their life a so miserable they feel the need to validate themself to the detriment of others.

45

u/rook119 Dec 08 '24

the guy is wrong anyway. a real FF fan loves FF6 and hates everything else

35

u/SuperStealthOTL Dec 08 '24

A real fan of anything hates that thing more than anyone else.

19

u/Esperagon Dec 08 '24

Checks out. Big Kingdom Hearts fan, know all the lore and can explain 90% of it to a willing listener.

I also consistently acknowledge said lore is stupid as shit.

5

u/WaitAZechond Dec 08 '24

90% lol As someone who has played them all, this comment is the most accurate thing I’ve read all day.

No matter how tempered my view of the other games in the series, this is how I feel deep down.

I've got two friends of mine that have played mostly all the mainline titles except for XI and XIV.

I've played all as well, and XI and XIV.

Let a fan be a fan. Don't try and shove an MMO down someone else's throat - even if you think they should like it. It's not everyone's cup of tea.

15

u/arciele Dec 08 '24

i have no problem with someone who doesn't like MMOs calling themselves a fan. or a "real" fan, for that matter. i would hope that they at least tried them.

but i do take issue with people who say things like "i played/completed every final fantasy game" but somehow that list will omit the MMORPGs because its not convenient for them to make the claim otherwise. i call out that kind of bullshit.

8

u/RougeCrown Dec 08 '24

Nah more like “I play every FF” but then turns out they only play the “real FF” which are 7-10 at best. Then have the gall to come around and say that FF is no longer what it used to be and scoff at FFXVI for betraying the FF formula.

26

u/poundsignbuttstuff Dec 08 '24

In fairness, as someone who plays XIV, this does sound like something I would say as shit-talking but not being serious. Like, if I knew someone who was a big FF fan but hadn't played XIV, I would give them grief about it but it would all be in good fun.

5

u/Fakemanky Dec 08 '24

Some people are unhinged frol the FFXIV community. I mean to each there own right? I wrote a comment in a twitch chat that i did not like the new addon story to much and got wished cancer from a guy in dms. But yeah just the ordinary mental unstable guy. Most people are chill god bless

1

u/DeathByTacos Dec 08 '24 edited Dec 08 '24

Yeah I could totally see this as good-natured ribbing and not automatically “your opinions are invalidated cause you don’t like this game”.

Like if it’s from a friend I don’t see a problem with it if it’s fits the dynamic. If it’s a DM then honestly who gives a fuck what some rando thinks and live your best life

real fans gatekeep the gatekeepers

9

u/Fledgeling Dec 08 '24

The truest of true FF fans seem to be gatekeepers.whilst simultaneously hating the last ten FF games because they weren't real FF games

2

u/ballsdeep256 Dec 08 '24

Agree no such thing as a "true" fan cant expect new fans to like everything

Many became fromsoft fans after elden ring and never touched a souls like before

2

u/starforneus Dec 08 '24

So there's not too many of them, then?

2

u/Supplex-idea Dec 09 '24

It’s hard to have time for both XIV and playing through all the other games.

23

22

You're not a true fan unless you completed the chains of promathia storyline.

6

4

u/Thimascus Dec 09 '24

Did that! :D

9

u/fieldsRrings Dec 08 '24

XI is the love of my life and I've been playing XIV since 2010.

Trying to feel those XI feelings again. It will never happen. I've accepted it. 🫠

7

u/ChaoCobo Dec 08 '24

What do you mean? Just play XI again? I’m subbed to XI rn and it’s the best game ever in life.

4

u/fieldsRrings Dec 08 '24

It's different now. It's still fun but I miss the sense of adventure with random people, the exp grind, the exploration. It's just not the same like it was 2004-2009.

4

u/ChaoCobo Dec 08 '24

I mean yeah it will never go back to the way it was in times of Olde XI but New XI is still really great. I play with frens every day just about and we have tons of fun! There’s 2 frens I play with all the time forever days and it’s just an absolute blast! :)

I've played FF14 and I like it but that fanbase really needs to understand MMOs aren't for everyone. Also, considering the mass amount of content from expansions and patches, it's basically its own franchise separate from the typical main series in the same way 7 is. That's not a bad thing but people can be FF14 fans without playing the other games while others can be FF fans without playing 14.

34

u/grw18 Dec 08 '24

My bro plays XIV and i havent gotten around to it but we both love FF.

I was playing FF3 PR, my bro who recognized alot of the music and i told him this is where it came from.

27

u/Wiifanbro Dec 08 '24

The entirety of Shadowbringers is essentially a love letter to 3 with how the game uses the Crystal Tower as one of its foundations for its storylines.

3

u/Thank_You_Aziz Dec 08 '24

Not to mention the Crystal Tower alliance raids before that. Natsuko Ishikawa appears to love FFIII.

2

u/solidwhetstone Dec 08 '24

There's also a lot of 4 references in endwalker and post endwalker content. They even have the 4 fiends!

7

u/Thank_You_Aziz Dec 08 '24

There’s something I love about this. Not only does XIV take a lot of that music from III too, it expands on it. Each track lasts twice as long before looping, so when Masayoshi Soken remastered those tracks, he invented entire second halves of them.

For comparison, here is the original and PR version. Note how it loops at the 48 second mark.

Now listen to the FFXIV version. Not only is it fully orchestrated now, even though it takes a little longer, it should loop at the 80-second mark. Instead, it keeps going, with brand new music that was not there in the original. Invented just for this game, even after previous remasters like on the DS version. Now it loops more at the 130-second mark. (But also this link adds in the battle version of the theme at this point too, so ultimately it doesn’t really “loop” at all in this video.) And my favorite part is, you would not know this just by listening to it. To people like me and your brother, even if we knew this music originally came from FFIII, we wouldn’t know what parts are original are original to III or XIV just by listening to this version alone.

27

u/DeathByTacos Dec 08 '24

I don’t disagree but I find it really funny how ppl are more willing to apply this logic to the MMOs over other titles in the series even if functionally there are enough differences between all the games to have varied experiences.

Like someone saying “I don’t like XIV it just isn’t for me” is taken very differently in the fanbase than saying “I don’t like VII it just isn’t for me” or “I don’t like X it just isn’t for me”.

4

u/Duouwa Dec 08 '24 edited Dec 08 '24

I think it’s just because structurally XIV is very different from every other game in the series, barring XI obviously; always online, live-service, subscription requirement, etc.

That’s just the shortlist, but I do think it’s fair to say that XI and XIV are just very different from the rest of the series in terms of the game/consumer relationship. The way the user interacts with everything is, by intentional design, just very different from every other title, and the functionality of the game both narratively and mechanically falls around that. Some will love it, others won’t, but regardless it is quite distinct from how the rest of the series is developed.

I do agree with you though, I think you should be able to say, “this thing just isn’t for me,” without people jumping down your throat. Sadly, the XIV community does this amongst itself a lot too; it doesn’t matter how much a person actually likes the game, if you say out loud that you don’t like the story that much, you get an absurd amount of backlash, including a lot of weird assumptions about reading comprehension and general patience. The XIV subreddit is very toxic if I’m honest, though I’m not about to claim this one is the bastion of acceptance either, not even close.

Wish everyone wasn’t so uptight about how much other people do or don’t enjoy their stuff.

1

u/Minimum-Jellyfish669 Dec 08 '24

Wish everyone wasn’t so uptight about how much other people do or don’t enjoy their stuff.

It's just called being polite. If I meet someone who says they enjoy Beyonce's latest album, I'm not gonna tell them I dislike it. I would just change the topic of the conversation to find common interest.

In the same vein, going to r/ffxiv to say you dislike the game, or r/finalfantasy to say you dislike final fantasy is just impolite.

2

u/Dualitizer Dec 09 '24

The vast majority of my friend group in XIV know next to nothing about a single FF game outside of XIV outside of maybe who Sephiroth and Cloud are and give me hell for going full FF nerd when references drop. It has a massive audience that aren't even fans of FF usually.

u/RhinataMorie Dec 08 '24

Absolutely. You are NOT allowed to be old enough to have played since the first one got out. You are absolutely NOT expected to have enjoyed peak FFV job system at the time of release. And you are no fan unless you have played EVERY. SINGLE. TITLE. related to the franchise. Get out of here.

(Contains sarcasm.)

5

u/greytitanium Dec 08 '24

FFV my beloved. Great game if you like turn based JRPGs

20

u/UncleBlumpkins Dec 08 '24

Real FF fans don't give a fuck about bullshit, manufactured competition.

Love what you love. Let others love what they love. Bond over the love you have in common.

17

u/RainbowandHoneybee Dec 08 '24

Tbh, anyone who thinks and says they are better FF fan than others because of whatever reasons, are not true fans. You have no requirement to be a FF fan, except for loving FF.

5

u/jBlairTech Dec 08 '24

As always: the worst part about fandoms are the fans.

You could be an OG Star Wars fan from ‘77 but, if you like Ahsoka (or anything post-Disney that fits the “narrative”), you aren’t a “real fan”. I sometimes wonder what the Venn Diagram of insufferable nerds with shit attitudes and all the sci-fi/fantasy genres looks like. Probably almost a complete circle.

15

u/LastAvailableUserNah Dec 08 '24

Gatekeeping FF has to be one of the lamest things a person could do

23

u/Abraslam_Simpson Dec 08 '24

I mean, I've finished all the way to the latest expansion. It's a fun game, and a decent FF, but I wouldn't expect everyone who played a Final Fantasy to try it. It's a whole different kettle of fish.

5

u/Arkride212 Dec 08 '24

Dawntrail killed it for me man, haven't subbed for like 5 months which is the longest i've ever been away from the game.

2

u/blood-wav Dec 08 '24

I struggle to log in these days haha. It's mostly just the FC house at this point which keeps me subbed, in the hope that I'll like the game again at some point.

7

u/MuksyGosky Dec 08 '24

I love XIV, but I prefer XV more and I've only played 3 FF titles including VI (which was called III before).

As long as you like something you're a fan. Stop worrying about all this pressure of playing all to be a so called "true" fan. It's not like Yoshi-P will send you a medal or something for it

13

u/MaraBlaster Dec 08 '24

No.

I recommend trying out FFXIV (Trial Version, no reason to waste money if you can play the game with the critical acclaimed Heavensward & Stormblood expansion for free with unlimited gametime), but if it is just not your game or you can't afford the subscription, stick to single player FF games.

If you haven't played it yet, FF9 is an absolute stellar game despite its flaws.

50

u/alex-butterfield Dec 08 '24

I tried it but I prefer single player FFs

22

u/Ligma_Spreader Dec 08 '24

Me, who has been playing FFXIV by myself from ARR to Endwalker. Might as well be single player.

14

u/Arkride212 Dec 08 '24

FF14 is basically a single player game tbh they even got NPC's to help you clear most story content, you don't need to play with other players.

10

u/Frohtastic Dec 08 '24

I really like ff14 BUT many years of WoW caused me to build up mmo antibodies. :(

3

u/QueenLaQueefaRt Dec 08 '24

This, so much… mmo’s feel so lifeless to me and usually based around a grind to keep you playing. I tried to get into it but omg it’s very much reminiscent of wow which I was a day 1 for. In my opinion MMOs need to evolve to be closer to what single player games look like with game play, rather than focus on having a million different mounts or just bloat.

2

u/Frohtastic Dec 08 '24

For me it just sorts devolved into a second job.

u/dimaesh Dec 08 '24 edited Dec 08 '24

I’m the same, I’ve played every mainline game (plus a bunch of sequels, prequels, side games and spinoffs) and I never gotten into XI or XIV. I just find it weird that ppl don’t consider you a true fan because you don’t like MMOs. FFIX has been my favorite game since day one. So judging from what they said to me, it means my entire childhood is irrelevant lol

4

u/SenpaiSwanky Dec 08 '24 edited Dec 08 '24

Note that FF14 is only technically an MMO. If you choose to interact with that side of the game you can, but the main story is very much a single player experience outside of the occasional dungeon or boss that you queue for in a multiplayer setting. Those are the equivalent of “this boss is important to the lore, in true FF form you need a party to defeat them”.

Most of these tend to be 8 players, which is actually good because it spreads responsibility around and allows for more room to make mistakes and not play “optimally”. Early on you’ll be queuing with players who can just blast through the content as they’re well past it with their thousands of hours already. There are smaller instances of 4 party teams which were originally required to queue a party to play but as time passed the devs programmed NPC AI to control the 3 other characters so you can play something like 80% of content solo.

The story itself is VERY “Final Fantasy”, and you get to grow with your character and watch as more and more people recognize you as a god/ beast slayer. It’s very interesting, to say the least. A lot of really dark shit happens too.

While FF XIV is a mainline FF game, anyone who pulls the "true fan" nonsense shouldn't be taken too seriously.

4

u/Robofish13 Dec 08 '24

Played it - didn’t like most of it.

RAIDs and bosses were awesome tho. Not a fan of the crafter malarky tho

17

u/id40536 Dec 08 '24

This is standard nerd culture gatekeeping. They’re insecure in their real life so they flex their non-existent muscles over their hobbies.

you can be a true fan if you played just one game even. And I say this as a die-hard 14 player. You don’t have to play it. It’s a different kind of beast and not everyone is obligated to play it. In fact half of the player base for it if not most never touched an offline FF game in their lives. They play it because it’s an MMO.

12

u/dimaesh Dec 08 '24

My 22 year old niece never played a FF game in her life and when she beat XVI this year for the first time she fell in love with the game.

she asked me once that if it’s weird she never played any other game considering it’s a huge series, I said no. She is a TRUE fan like any other of us! FF is just so diverse and different, but what makes it FF is the fact that IT IS FF.

2

u/Rugkrabber Dec 08 '24

There’s a first time for everyone. The process of finding a franchise and trying it out isn’t linear. I don’t understand why people are bothered by it. Do it however you feel like doing it. Same with music. Or with clothes. Or whatever in life.

7

u/BANAnaS_Dad Dec 08 '24

I’ve never understood the point of gaming superiority. A game is a game. If you’ve put 1000 hours in FFXIV, great. If you’ve put 1000 into candy crush, also great.

u/Character-Arm-1761 Dec 08 '24

On a real note how is XIV? I haven’t played it and haven’t touched an MMO in years. Don’t know if I’d be interested in another mmo again (except DQ X). I always hear how great XIV is. Guess since it’s been out a while I look at it as this daunting task now.

6

u/shadowwingnut Dec 08 '24

The story is varying degrees from good to absolutely fantastic through the Endwalker expansion. If you don't want to deal with other people you mostly don't have to outside of one 24 man raid series and 8 man trials. And the base game and first two expansions are free. I personally hated the most recent expansion Dawntrail but it doesn't change that my experience through Endwalker was fantastic.

3

u/Character-Arm-1761 Dec 08 '24

How long do you think playing thru the story would take? Games like mmos or open world games I always tend to drop bc I get burnt out from trying to do everything

I'll add my 2 cents, if you try it do the free trial, it comes with ARR, HW & SB, letting you level until lv70 and run most content for free, including all the story!

That way if you end up liking it, great! You can buy the full game! And if you don't you won't have spend any money :)!

→ More replies

4

u/LegoBrickCactuar Dec 08 '24

Absolutely, try the free trial and find out for yourself.  Yes it’s an MMO but you can 100% play solo and just quest and do the main story like any old JRPG.  I’ve played for years and am nearing level 90 and the end of Endwalker expansion.  I play super casual and play alone mostly. I do some dungeons and trials thru the Duty Finder which matches you with other players and I think I’ve had a bad interaction like once.  If you announce you are new, everyone is patient.  I recently did a dungeon with people and died like 5 times and at the end got 2 commendations (good job! votes) It’s amazing and I’d say it’s taken me more than 500 hours to get to where I am.

3

u/bandi138138 Dec 08 '24

I love XIV and have been playing it for a decade, but this is a ridiculously bad take

4

u/ATDynaX Dec 08 '24

No. If you like Final Fantasy you are a true fan. That's basically the definition of a fan. A person that has to play everything is called obsessed.

4

u/adwreicher Dec 08 '24

I really like FFXIV, great game with a lot of references, but the community is horrible (and this guy comment is funny since most of them haven't touched other games).

4

u/Big_Figs14 Dec 08 '24

I forced myself to play through A Real Reborn and I was miserable the entire time. MMOs are just not for me.

4

u/Svenray Dec 08 '24

I gave XIV a few chances. An MMO is an MMO no matter what coat of paint you give it and they just aren't for me.

4

u/Shmullus_Jones Dec 08 '24

I played FFXIV for a while. It's really good and I loved it. But the problem is MMOs take too much of my time when there are too many other games I want to play. Playing an MMO prevents me from playing other games.

4

u/kfoeoejxndnrjrkdkd Dec 09 '24

These ffxiv players wanna be a "true" fan so bad. A true fan is someone who enjoys final fantasy and that could literally just be one game that you played or all of them. I would say gatekeeping makes you less of a fan because you're hiding something from others.

9

u/JCGilbasaurus Dec 08 '24

A real fan plays whatever the hell game they want. You could play nothing but the Chocobo racing game, and you'd still be a real fan.

Signed—some dude who thinks XIV is amazing.

3

u/PortusCalePT Dec 08 '24

A true fan enjoys his games and supports others enjoy theirs.

3

u/Melodic_Mortgage_835 Dec 08 '24

As someone who played the single-player FF titles as well as drained 6 years of her life into playing XIV, you don't need to play XIV to be a "true fan."

Generally, while it's a good MMO, I don't like how the playerbase tries to suck people in especially in cases like this. I vastly prefer the single-player games, plus being shoved into the game wasn't the best start.

"True fans" don't act like this. Enjoy what you like and leave out the rest.

3

u/Confident_Car_823 Dec 08 '24

How quaint. I disagree

3

u/iEugene72 Dec 08 '24

I've been playing FF games since VII when I was 10 years old. There are always going to be games you're going to like, love, dislike, and hate. You cannot escape that.

This being said, for me personally I completely skipped XI and XIV entirely because I cannot stand playing online games. I tried for a bit, mostly with World of Warcraft, but the whole thing is a huge turn off to me. I enjoy single player games with hopefully great gameplay and a great story.

In other words, just like what you like, ignore others.

3

u/corbanax Dec 08 '24

Tell him a true FF fan plays FFXI

3

u/rMan1996 Dec 08 '24

A real fan doesn’t care about being a «real fan» of anything. Live your life and ignore people like these.

3

u/Head-Comfortable-439 Dec 08 '24

Kids these days don't know about FFXI

3

u/Darkwing__Schmuck Dec 09 '24

This sounds like something someone who only plays 14 would say.

3

u/system_error_02 Dec 09 '24

I've tried to get into XIV multiple times but I just find it to be such a boring slog, I can only seem to get so far. If it didn't have a monthly fee that equated to $20/month in CAD id probably give it more of a chance but I'm just not a fan of those sub fees.

9

u/PiratePatchP Dec 08 '24

Not trying to shit on everyone that plays 14, but they definitely have the most unhinged weird fanbase out of any FF games. The amount of pure anger I've seen over 14 debates is insane lol. I met some great people on 14, but mmo players are a different breed man.

6

u/PickledClams Dec 08 '24

It's a weird sex cult now

2

u/SiLKYzerg Dec 08 '24

My favorite argument that community brings up a lot to the MSQ "gameplay" is "this is how all FF games are" which is mindblowing to me because I don't remember booting up FF 4 5 or 6 in the 90s tapping the dialogue button for 95% of the game.

7

You could play XIV for well over a hundred hours before getting to the first bit of pretty good content. Asking that commitment of anyone is unreasonable and unfair.

6

u/Voidmire Dec 08 '24

Jobs don't feel complete until at minimum 70 either, some until 90. Content doesn't rise past faverollingly easy and unengaging until 90 as wel

It certainly wasn’t bad; it just wasn’t for me, so I played for a little while during free trial period and then moved on.

If you enjoy those types of games, you’ll like it though; it is pretty good for its genre.

u/dimaesh Dec 08 '24

This, this is exactly my experience with XIV. It’s one of those games that made me realize MMOs are just not my thing. The other would be XI and WoW

4

u/LogicalFlakes Dec 08 '24

Too bad XIV is a horrible MMO in general. There's no social aspect and the worlds are dead. When you do meet people, they're just their to meet their dailies or do their dungeon of the day. The social interaction is at late game and by then you either have a clique/FC or you don't.

When I did play the game, I did have fun doing the extra stuff, but I did realize I was enjoying it by myself (even though I had friends who were already late-game geared and would hop-in once in a while). I always have and will enjoy tanking and healing, but the realization is that I'm paying to play an online game for a story that felt just okay to me (I stopped at the beginning of Shadowbringers).

Also I can't quite put my finger on it, but XIV has some sort of... toxic positivity or something? And ne last nit-pick is that there are no "ugly" characters. Everyone is beautiful unless it's an opposing faction. Which fits to the end game that everything is beautiful and mounts (typical MMO stuff nowindays).

6

u/KennedyX8 Dec 08 '24

Person is wrong.

6

u/whosthatsquish Dec 08 '24

This is hilarious because 90% of XIV players haven't played a single other game.

I quit XIV recently because the community is insufferable lmao

I played it for the free month. Enjoyed it but MMOs just not for me. Too many games coming out and too big a backlog to pay 15 bucks a month and play the same game over and over. No matter how objectively great that game is .

2

u/Regular_Archer_3145 Dec 08 '24

Im not an mmo kind of guy. I have not played FFIV or FFXI and dont plan to. That being said, I have been a fan of FF since playing FFI on the NES. We all have different opinions about which games are the best, but we all agree the series is amazing, or we wouldn't all be on these forums.

2

u/arciele Dec 08 '24

i know this is meant to be a lighthearted discussion but i just wanted to say that as a mods on this sub we take a serious approach when it comes to behavior that amounts to gatekeeping or gaslighting.

if you see that someone is being oppressive or uncivil, please report the post accordingly.

2

u/CuriousOK Dec 08 '24

Since it currently feels like a safe space in here, gotta get something off my chest, y'all:

I haven't played anything newer than FFX.

2

u/DrhpTudaco Dec 08 '24

me who only plays xv xvi and SoP

[meme not available]

2

u/BillionBirds Dec 08 '24

A real fan has 3 settings and spins around knocking over loose papers.

2

u/hermit_purple_3 Dec 08 '24

A real fan plays through all of Final Fantasy 2

2

u/Our_sweet_white_1296 Dec 08 '24

You're not a final fantasy fan untill you have played and beaten the first one. Just kidding folks.

2

u/ampkajes08 Dec 08 '24

I guess someone who plays lightning returns is a true ff fan

2

u/Keefyfingaz Dec 08 '24

4-10 is generally seen as peak FF, no?

I also enjoy going back to the old school FF1-FF3

2

u/Arinoch Dec 08 '24

I don’t have time for XIV. Someday hopefully I can catch up.

2

u/Ok-Rate3106 Dec 08 '24

A true FF fan only plays 8, and you all know it!

2

u/Different-Syrup6520 Dec 08 '24

I dont have that kind of money

2

u/ThePatron168 Dec 08 '24

Now if only half the community wasn't currently fed up with XIV and it actually released content way more consistently.

2

u/Spiritual-Fold-9060 Dec 08 '24

A true FF fan rides a chocobo to work, not a car. 👌😝

2

u/AyanoNova Dec 08 '24

Aint no way when there was 13 other games before that PLUS spin offs 😭

2

u/FlamingoCat_ Dec 08 '24

I recently played through 9. Been playing KH Which tbh is just Nomuras own FF universe. I've been playing 15 with my mum.

My life is pretty stacked with FF

2

u/shojikun Dec 08 '24

a true FF fan play everything FF related and ain't toxic about any of it. 99% incuding me ain't a true FF fan.

2

u/RatmiGaming Dec 08 '24

Ffxiv is good nostalgia but I wouldn’t say you HAVE to play it lol

2

u/MaxTheHor Dec 08 '24

Sole real gatekeeping behavior.

Must be young, or mentally still a child.

2

u/RealJasonB7 Dec 08 '24

Fuck gatekeepers

2

u/No-Calligrapher9269 Dec 08 '24

No they tell you lies

2

u/ShatteredFantasy Dec 08 '24

You're not a true unless you pick one game in the entire franchise and shit on all the others because they aren't your personal favorite.

2

u/Son_of_Atreus Dec 08 '24

I’m never playing online games like and if dweebs want to deduct ‘true fan’ points from me for that then I gotta say I just do not care about any opinion from a person like that.

2

u/Adavanter_MKI Dec 08 '24

lol, imagine thinking the MMOs are the true test. To this day I still don't like them being included as mainline titles. They should have always been FFO 1 and 2. Even Yoshi (the dude who saved/makes it) sort of agrees.

2

u/Low_Anxiety4800 Dec 08 '24

A real fan doesn't need to play one FF title or another. Enjoy the ones you wish to.

2

u/MistaKrebs Dec 08 '24

Oof. I love XIV but I totally understand why a FF fan wouldn’t enjoy it.

2

u/Potato_Coma_69 Dec 08 '24

Anyone who cares about being a "true" anything is a bitch

2

u/Alekazammers Dec 08 '24

A real fan plays literally any final fantasy. This is dumb... Now if you want to argue if your favorite is good or not THAT'S the real shit right there.

Edit: even if you like a game that's bad or one someone doesn't like... If it says final fantasy you're still a fan.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '24

XIV is lowkey ass

2

u/Dipstickpattywack Dec 08 '24

lol ffxiv has gone from a hardcore mmo to a game where ppl ERP as cats and bunnies. I usually just play it every other expansion to catch up on the story.

I logged over a year and a half of actual play time in the game from 1.0-4.0… it holds a special place in my heart but I don’t feel the magic like I used to. I do still keep in touch with the friends I made along the way.

2

u/decoded-dodo Dec 08 '24

I really hate gatekeepers. They make fans look bad. I used to be in a final fantasy group back when MySpace was a thing and there was a newly assigned moderator who went on a power trip. When someone mentioned their favorite game is any final fantasy that wasn’t 7 he would kick them out of the group because you weren’t a real fan if your favorite isn’t 7.

2

u/Yuujinliftalot Dec 08 '24

Jesus.. MMORPG Players.. funnily enough tho, the ff xiv community is veeeeeery loud in this sub, just ignore this dipshit, the game is not that special.

2

u/DGenesis23 Dec 08 '24

I fucking hate gate keeping… if you like even a single game in the series, you’re a fan! None of this “true fan” nonsense. Doesn’t matter if someone else has played every numbered title, every sequel and every spinoff, they are a fan. There isn’t any levels to this shit.

2

u/MultiverseMoron Dec 09 '24

XIV is just subscription fanservice

2

u/YomaSofat Dec 09 '24

Lol. It's like saying a true Elder Scrolls fan plays ESO.

2

u/bigsick1313 Dec 09 '24

I've played everything ff wise...even 11 and 14 VERY temporary. I just don't like people so I hate MMOs

2

u/Unslaadahsil Dec 09 '24

lol, ignorant fool. A true fan DOESN'T play XIV.

Jokes aside, this person needs to read up on the "No true Scotsman" fallacy.

2

u/Player_Slayer_7 Dec 09 '24

Makes sense. As we all know, Final Fantasy starts at XIV. There were no other games before that

2

u/Ffkratom15 Dec 09 '24

Fuck mmo's

2

u/thedoofenator3000 Dec 09 '24

A true fan would enjoy what they want to enjoy in the series.

2

u/SlayerOfHellWyrm Dec 09 '24

I love FF, but I will never touch 14. I do not like MMOs and the concept of paying every single month to play your game that you've already paid for.

2

u/JesseJeremiah Dec 09 '24

14 doesn't not make u a ff fan... 11 inspired it. Most people who play 14 never played another final fantasy.

2

u/Abusive_Truth Dec 10 '24

XIV is for chumps... real fans play XI

2

u/Ill-Video2723 29d ago

Don’t listen to that nimrod. As long as you enjoy final fantasy you’re a real ff fan. Take it from a guy who’s been playing final fantasy since I was 5, I’m 34 now. As long as you are enjoying yourself you’re a fan.

3

u/NightVisions999 Dec 08 '24

I like FFXIV. Story is great. But this whole 'It's an MMO that respects your time!' idea is pure nonsense. It's countless hours of running around and doing fetchquests, and even after all that there is still the expectation that you log in daily, grind dungeons for hours, play the game non-stop without breaks. Which those of us who enjoy playing different games and also have a real life just cannot keep up with. I've seen people defend it's boring quest design with 'Well, that's just how MMOs work, don't complain'. Which, sure, you can say that. But you can't say then that this game is more of an RPG than an MMO. It's a story-focused MMO, but just like other MMOs, it expects you to invest a LOT of time (even more than others, I'd say, because just the main story takes 300+ hours). And it's perfectly fine for an FF fan to not have that kind of time on hand right now.

XIV is not in a great place right now. Weird time to gatekeep.

0

u/DanishNinja Dec 08 '24

How does Dawntrail being mid, have anything to do with previous content?

4

u/Thyco2501 Dec 08 '24

I've played FFXIV a lot and while I think it's great, it's not nearly as good as the regular entries. Personal opinion.

4

u/SqueakyAnus Dec 08 '24

XI > XIV

If you know you know

2

u/jBlairTech Dec 08 '24

Seems to be the mentality, depending on what day you show up to the sub.

You can get downvoted and/or “uhm, ack-tuoo-ah-lee’d” for saying something that isn’t 7, 9, 10, or 14 is your favorite. Downvoted for having actual negative things to say about 7, 9, 10, and 14.

Bonus if you specifically say something negative about 14. They’re like a cult.

This guy should stop playing XIV. This type of toxicity in the average player base is rare and isn’t acceptable to 99% of the players.

2

u/Wolfiono Dec 08 '24

I just wish the 2 FF MMOs were their own thing and not in the main series. Just call them FF Online & FF Online 2. Either that or do an offline remake.

I just can’t play MMOs and no matter how many times people say “oh man, you reaaally need to give it a go!” - multiplayer is just too stressful for me.

2

u/scrub_mage Dec 08 '24

Not everyone has 4000 hrs to sink into mmos lol

2

u/Aosugiri Dec 08 '24

XIV is the single least inspired video game in terms of game design I've invested an embarrassing amount of time into. It's fine for what is but is also so relentlessly terrified of any meaningful evolutions to its design that I can't begin to recommend it to anyone. Once you've experienced one of its dungeons, in gameplay terms you have quite literally played them all.

3

u/kakka_rot Dec 08 '24

Sounds like a 14 fan.

1

u/Sparkmage13579 Dec 08 '24

Nah, OP, you're good.

I dipped out after X2, when they announced 11 was an mmo. I don't do mmos.

I regularly replay 1 through X2.

1

u/Wiifanbro Dec 08 '24

XIV is a mainline game, but there's a reason you'll see a lot of reddit posts that have 100% every Final Fantasy game — that is singleplayer — and ignore XI and XIV as requirements. Both are so long compared to the other FF games that it's truly not for everyone, and I say this as someone who's been playing XIV everyday for the last 5 months.

OP (and others) should at least listen to the XIV soundtrack a couple of times if they want and have the chance. There are a lot of outstanding city themes, boss themes, etc.

1

u/Elitericky Dec 08 '24

I welcome everyone to play FF regardless of which title

1

u/ManElectro Dec 08 '24

Guys, don't worry, I'm on my way to have sex with his mother as we speak, we must teach the young ones of the old ways, by experience if necessary. Once I'm his step-dad I'll make him play Final Fantasy 2 as punishment.

1

u/solidalcohol Dec 08 '24

I love FF as much as the rest of us, but there's no way I'll play FF14 with all the responsibilities I have. If I got into it, I'd definitely neglect everything important 😅

1

u/ZakFellows Dec 08 '24

I think I'd rather not be a true fan if I'm acting like that

1

u/throwaway_nrTWOOO Dec 08 '24

u aint a true fan.

a true fan abandon's his family to sleep in a ditch with an aerith pillow, scavenging rats with a makeshift-masamune made from duct-tape and old coat-hangers. I bet he doesn't even a have a restraining order against Nobuo, the filthy casual. How dare he just be enjoying his life, being taken aback by the ageless beauty of those games that he does play.

1

u/Secondhand-Drunk Dec 08 '24

I remember back on AOL 5.0 I had an argument with someone about ff. He said ff7 was better, I said ff8 was better. Then I started saying fuck you a lot and got reported and my dad was mad because I got our kid accounts locked.

AOL was fucking weird. Really weird. Like, they could just ban you from the internet?

1

u/ozacrot Dec 08 '24

Final Fantasy is more than one game. In fact, I'd be hard-pressed to think of another series with as much diversity between titles, whether mainline or spinoff-inclusive.
