air integrated with trimix, yes, that's going to run in the 1500-1800 range. Suunto vyper is about $360, which is about as basic as they come.
For one that is not air integrated, has an underwater compass, data tracking including gps recording of entry/exit, simple dive stops and a few other things, about 800 seems.. ok. They REALLY need to add an AI option, but I don't think a BTLE connection to transmit remaining pressure will work under water.

Sorry, I was talking about people who justify expensive watches with the mentality “well, I could dive if I wanted to” (i.e. people buying mechanical dive watches like seamasters and submariners - and to be fair, I have one, though not because I think I might go diving with it some day…) - not people who actually dive.

The diveability of diving watches come second to the style aspect.
I can see Ultra Watches becoming very popular with the office workers who wear Patagonia to the office.

I have Scuba dived, and I will continue to. This watch doesn't do anything that reliable dive computers don't already do better.
It's kind of like a "jack of all trades" thing. But nobody wants a jack when your life is literally dependent upon the information.
It could work as a supplement to existing dive computers and air gauges and such, but even then you don't want to start relying on it and take your eyes off of the hardline devices.
I could be wrong and other divers may love this, but I see a lot of reasons to not use this while diving.

u/mtlyoshi9 Sep 07 '22
As a diver myself, I agree that this doesn’t replace my current dive computer…mostly because I don’t dive nearly often enough to justify the bulkier watch to contend with every other day.
However, if I was a more frequent diver who wanted a bigger/more rugged watch anyway…and assuming Apple hardware and software live up to other industry devices (and there’s really no reason to believe otherwise)…then why not? Especially if my existing dive computer breaks/has any other issues that would otherwise require me to buy a new one.

Which is why the Apple Watch Ultra is going to sell like hotcakes. Apple understands how to market aspirational products. Everyone buys their products because they hope it helps them become just like the pro photographer/videographer/musician/athlete/adventurer featured in their presentations. Apple makes those things feel like they’re within reach of everyone.
I’m totally getting one.

u/Tall_Mechanic8403 Sep 07 '22 edited Sep 07 '22
Tbh this is the same for the Garmin Fenix series. 95% of buyers don’t use it for outdoor adventures. But who cares, the features are also good For normal sport use.

Yeah for sure. Link bracelet is a few hundred dollars. Pick one with a base band (sport loop, sport band) and it should be $749.

Apple watch ultra isn't a classic pro "upgrade", its more like a different product for extrem sport cases. Normal users have little to no advantages from getting one. Which obviously wont stop A LOT of people from getting one but still.

While they were talking about it, I was guessing an $1199 price point. Especially since it has a titanium case, which on the Series 7 ran $799.
I kind of wonder if they're hitting a lower price point this year so that more people buy in and they can see what people use it for the most and then lean in to that for future models?

People are complaining about the price here. This is not a watch to wear to the office. This is for outdoor activities.
As a professional scuba diver I think this is really huge and a big innovation! The dive computer market is a niche. Usually these computers were of no use outside the water. Garmin entered that market like 2 years ago and started to combine smart watches and dive computers. Now Apple enters that market. Up to now, dive computer were mostly really ugly. Now we divers get a neat Apple Watch. Dive computers can also be quite expensive and you needed to buy at least two gadgets, now you have all-in-one. So as a scuba diver, the price is fair.
I am very surprised but also very happy about the Apple Watch Ultra announcement.

im an avid (scuba) diver, and this thing has tons of promise. a few details need solidified that don't appear to be published, but this could be absolutely damning for companies like garmin, sunnto, and others.
if apple is able to add air integration (transmitter on scuba tank/cylinder to transmit gas pressures) then this thing is by far the best value for any recreational diver.
even without that, if it has basic nitrox support, this is a rec divers dream.
honestly, great product, and im looking forward to testing it.
wish it had the satcom capability the phone is getting though. seems like that was a miss given its intended purpose.
→ More replies7
u/Ricky_RZ Sep 07 '22
I heard from other divers that not integrating air and the depth limit of 40m or something around that is a turn off.
What do you tink as a scuba diver?
11
u/zuggles Sep 07 '22 edited Sep 07 '22
i dont know if you're a diver or who is going to read this; so, let me be a little long winded:
there are two types of SCUBA diving (generally). RECreational and TEChnical diving.
the most common certifying agency in the world for rec divers is PADI. a FULLY certified and trained rec diver is capped (in theory) at 130 feet.
so, for rec diving the depth limit is no problem. my shearwater teric and perdix are approximately $1100 before air transmitters. the garmin mk2i w/o air transmitter is similarly priced. so, in terms of rec capabilities this apple watch will literally do everything you would ever want as a rec diver, but also provide a better product package and capability for anything NON diver related -- clear apple win.
for TECHNICAL diving the apple watch MAY not be ideal. it depends on your depth and gas mixture (yet to be seen the capabilities on gas mixture). but, tec divers are going to likely be using shearwater perdix, nerd, teric, etc.
air integration has yet to be discussed by apple. it is possible they could add this in the future with transmitters (their own or other integrations). but, while air integration is not REQUIRED in any sense for rec or tec diving (rare exceptions)... it does make some things easier. it also allows you to very accurately track air consumption and current air supply.
again, air integration is more of a nice to have than a NEED to have. there are some divers that ONLY USE digital air integration, but i belong to a much larger group that always have an analog pressure gauge on my cylinders in addition to any air integration. there are a few reasons for this...
so, short answer:
i do not think the depth is a concern at all. i think apple has just absolutely smacked garmin the face by producing the single best 'all in one' smart watch/dive computer/whatever that exists.
air integration would be awesome, and if they include this would make the apple watch nearly unrivaled in rec computers.
for tec diving... ill stick with my shearwater.
ps -- i mentioned garmin because right now it is one of the only all-in-one platforms that has gps, smartwatch, dive computer, air integration.
another big question is this 'app coming later this fall'... the app and its integrations, and required subscription may make this less attractive.

Damn, the Ultra sits in a super weird place in the lineup.
It's essentially the same price as Series 8 Stainless Steel, so it's not even like they're charging a premium for it. So for roughly the same price, they're offering:
- Twice the screen brightness (2000 nits vs 1000)
- Twice the water resistance (100m vs 50m)
- Diving capability to 40m, dive computer
- Extra sensors (depth gauge, water temperature sensor, precision dual-frequency GPS)
- A siren that can be heard at a distance for emergencies
- Dual speakers (40% louder) and triple mic array (wind noise mitigation)
- Programmable action button
- Double the battery life
- Bluetooth 5.3 (no idea whether this is meaningful, but Series 8 is still listed as 5.0)
It's a massive upgrade on every single front, without an actual price premium being demanded - but there's an enormous aesthetic tradeoff. 49mm is monstrously sized. I'm sure the great battery life is only possible at this size, but it sucks to have no way to access the myriad other upgrades without also getting something that looks so god-awful.

Yeah I think you are right. This is a step in that direction but in my opinion, Garmin will still be king for athletes.

So here’s the deal. Those who say Garmin so much better, they mean battery and that’s about it (for most part). I have AW and a Garmin 920 for tri training. Pure sport use and training, Garmin hands down. The rest of the day, Apple. Garmin can’t show me my front door when doorbell rings. AW gives me super quick access to notifications from many apps with a few swipes. Garmin I’d be mashing that side button all day. Ultra is definitely aiming at Garmin crowd but they’re well aware they’re way behind to take everyone. If you’re doing multi day hunting or hiking, use your Garmin. Other reason Garmin lasts so damn long is it isn’t powering a touch screen with ton of sensors. Trade offs. For the weekend warrior or triathlete or marathoner who until now had to either own two watches or go all in on Garmin and lose functionality, Ultra brings those folks squarely into Apple arena and keeps them put.

Hello are you me? This is 100 percent how I am feeling about this watch. I have a Garmin Fenix 6 sapphire and do some technical backcountry hiking/backpacking however I work a desk job during the week and the apple makes way more since for day to day use.

Your Garmin 920 is multiple generations old, and you should check out the new Forerunner 955 (or Fenix 7 which is getting all the stuff the 955 has later this year if you want the rugged look, both have touch screens). They’re certainly going after the Garmin crowd from an aesthetic standpoint, but once you take the new features into account, the only reason to keep using an Apple Watch is if you’re so deep in the walled garden that you couldn’t find your way out with turn-by-turn GPS.
I wanted to like the Ultra so much, and was holding off upgrading from my Series 5 to the new forerunner hoping the Ultra would impress, but outside of walled garden features it seems the forerunner and Fenix are better in nearly every single way and I can still use Siri on the Garmin.

I was not at all interested until the $799 price tag.
I was going to get the 45mm stainless steel with the braided loop band. That's also $799. So for the same price I can get a bigger brighter display, longer battery, and a bunch more features that I may or may not actually use, and a higher quality case that's lightweight.
Why shouldn't I go with this? Do I do ultramarathons or scuba diving or arctic treks? No. But it just seems like a slightly better version of the watch for the same price.

yeah this is what has confused me so much about this watch... when I upgrade I always get the larger sized SS variant of the watch but like for literally no more money I get something that (while larger) is better in almost every aspect.
I got excited during the keynote since seeing the price of this had me thinking they lowered the cost of the SS variant to keep things segmented. Hell this is cheaper than the last titanium Apple Watch they sold... like make it make sense.
The markup must be huge on the SS variants especially compared to the ultra.

This is just too big for me to consider this. For a normal watch, 42mm is my max. 45mm Apple Watch is like, the absolute largest. But 49, and with that thickness…it’s just too much. Hopefully some of the features like the compass and breadcrumbs and night mode can make its way to the other watches. I just ordered the 45mm Apple Watch Hermes Series 8 as a treat to myself, since I was upgrading from the Series 4. But I’d have to see this Ultra on my wrist, because 49mm is frighteningly large.

"Apple Watch Series 8 has an 18-hours all-day battery life."
I feel like these two things contradict each other.

The marketed demographic for this seems a bit too narrow for a separate model. But of course they know a lot of people will buy this to just have the best.
For me I’d hoped they could just put the extra button on the regular watch. Would be super happy with that. Maybe next year.

They already announced it for S4 and later earlier in the presentation. It's a less-aggressive power saver mode.

I do like the design of this one more than the normal one. Looks like it was designed to be a watch and not a piece of tech.

“Apple says the Apple Watch Ultra has enough battery life for most users to complete a long-course triathlon, consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and full marathon at 26.2 miles.”
Vote of confidence in most users’ ability to finish that at all, let alone within the the watch’s battery life.
