An Apple Watch for Indiana Jones

799 gotta make him think twice about buying it

222

u/PlantbasedBurger Sep 07 '22

I think that’s cheap. It’s a dive computer and all kinds of other things.

I would tend to agree with you for what you get. I had no issues shelling out $1,000 for a Garmin Epix 2 when I considered what I was getting. If the Ultra can last more than 2 complete days on a charge, I will sell my Epix.

u/AccomplishedCoffee Sep 07 '22

IIRC it was 36 hours normal use but they’re working on a special mode that they claim will be 60 hours.

31

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '22

If I can get 60 hours with “mostly smartwatch” mode I’d likely get it. 36 hours doesn’t do it for me compared to 15 days with my Garmin Epix

u/Shinsekai21 Sep 07 '22

Seems like the 60-hour mode would cut mostly fancy functions of the smartwatch but keep the core function of the active watch. So seems like a good deals

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '22

I'd like to see a little flip-over solarcell that could charge it while wearing it...

2

u/Shinsekai21 Sep 08 '22

Solar-powered smart watch would be a game changer for sure

-5

u/liftandbike Sep 08 '22

No this isn't good deal at all. You're charging the watch 3 times a week 🤦‍♂️.

You have to coordinate charges in the day so you can get biometric monitoring data at night lmao.

You Apple ppl really are trapped in the matrix of poor product obsession.

1

u/SkanksnDanks Sep 08 '22

That is one of my main reservations about getting a watch at all. I’m really interested in the sleep metrics, but at work I’m moving around all day and I’m not sure when I would charge the thing.

I charge my Garmin FR955 about 2 to 3 times a month. And I am a very active human who uses it almost 24/7.

I have had apple watches in my past which is why I am being cortical of this AWultra.

I don't really understand a lot of the comments, they seem trollish / botish and I see a lot of bright eyed consumers about to throw their money at a pretty subpar fitness watch.

If they only want a bit more rugged smartwatch, go for it. But this thing trying to enter the fitness watch market against Garmin...laughable.

Totally agreed. Using an Epix myself and it's hard to go back to something that requires charging more often than once a week even with heavy GPS usage.

6

u/InsaneNinja Sep 07 '22

“Special mode” is low power mode that probably also disables always on display and minimizes communication.

8

u/AccomplishedCoffee Sep 07 '22

Low power mode is already in, they seemed to be talking about a kind of in-between mode.

8

u/phantasybm Sep 07 '22

Spend $300 less and with that savings spend $20 to get a little portable battery to charge it with while you sleep in your tent above the underground cavern lake you plan to scuba dive in.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '22

Somewhere in this thread (or maybe the Garmin page because they are talking about the watch) I mention I only use about 15% of the Epix features if that lol…it tracks my weightlifting, sleep and daily health stats..that’s it lol…I have no plans to ever go diving or hiking

4

u/phantasybm Sep 07 '22

I was just being a smart 🍑

1

u/fractalfrog Sep 07 '22

How are you liking the Epix? Thinking about upgrading from my 6X Pro.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '22

I enjoy it but I honestly only use maybe 15% off its features. I only lift weights (nothing GPS related) and let it track my sleep and training load.. Love it but still might consider the Ultra

1

u/kmj442 Sep 08 '22

I still don't think it touches the garmin (I have a Fenix 6 sapphire), unless you really really want to talk to your wrist or reply to texts from your wrist. I'll be honest its smart watch features are unparalleled in the garmin system but as far as battery life and "activity" tracking go its lacking compared to garmin. For something marketed towards endurance athletes (I have the Fenix because I do long distance triathlon and such) it don't think it will cut it.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '22

I always got more battery life out of my watch than what Apple even claimed simply by disabling a few features I never used anyways. If the ultra is 36 I bet I could stretch it to 48 without using low power mode

4

u/AhhnoldHD Sep 07 '22

Its expensive for people who don't need it. But for people who do, its actually really well priced for the features and competition.

2

u/Nocoffeesnob Sep 07 '22

Especially considering dive specific watches which do nothing functionally special other than tell time and great water depths are selling for $5k already.

u/harshmangat Sep 07 '22

Jesus I wish I lived in the US to be able to call a 799 USD smartwatch “cheap”

10

u/nicuramar Sep 07 '22

Cheap is relative, though. To the feature set, for example.

19

u/PlantbasedBurger Sep 07 '22

I don’t live in the US. 😂

2

u/penskeracin1fan Sep 07 '22

$799 for that watch is a steal

3

u/SymphonicRain Sep 07 '22

What makes you assume they live in the US?

1

u/Boxplastic Sep 07 '22

“Cheap” might be he wrong word, but it’s less expensive than what they are competing with.

60

u/WRONG_PREDICTION Sep 07 '22

Was expecting $999. Pricing isn’t that bad.

1

u/StriderKeni Sep 07 '22

It's 999,00€ in Germany 😭

2

u/jaybae1104 Sep 10 '22

The €999 number includes VAT which according to the internet is 19%. Excluding that, it actually costs €839.50 which isn't far off from the $799 that it costs here. American prices don't include sales tax while European prices do

2

u/StriderKeni Sep 10 '22

Good point. I always forgot that the prices in the US don’t include tax.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '22

Another year, another shafting of Europeans by Apple Inc.

1

u/Ok_Carrot_2029 Sep 07 '22

I was expecting $699

u/OnDemonWings Sep 07 '22

This is the standard price for comparable watches. Take a look at the Fenix series from Garmin for example.

u/stultus_respectant Sep 07 '22

I feel like it has some good features that differentiate it, but how in any way is it a better "watch"?

4

u/Thizzz_face Sep 07 '22

I mean I paid the same for my Apple Watch Edition.

15

u/EthanSayfo Sep 07 '22

Honestly, I thought it was going to be $999. Kind of shocked it's $799, for what you're getting.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Predatory Lending

2

u/DownByTheRivr Sep 07 '22

That’s not a lot. If it seems like it is, you’re probably not the target market.

I’m sure the Cup of Christ should be worth something at auction

As long as he has daily access to a charger...
