It’s almost like all these valuations are completely arbitrary so they dropped by half until there were enough buyers who said, “fuck it…why not?”

Fusion is another one. Anyone who believes that private companies with a few billion dollars are going to outpace 70 years of research by the brightest people on earth worked on by an international crew of tens of thousands is kinda dumb. It’s not a few years away. A decade at absolute minimum and that’s for a barely functioning prototype.

43
u/SaltKick2 12h ago
Yeah but its hilarious how the market reacts to Jensen saying it vs go ask any researcher or academic and they would have said the same thing.
There have been some big breakthroughs recently but only big in the sense that it proves quantum error correction and QC advantage is possible. Its still a very long and hard road ahead for anything useful.
IONQ IMO was the only public company that was worth holding anyway since its using a different tech than Google/IBM/Microsoft. But even then, Quantinuum has them beat but they're not public (though they work closely with Microsoft)

The crazy runs they were having definitely made me question what I know about quantum, though. The whole time, I was like, "Was there a major breakthrough I hadn't heard about yet?" Bc last I checked Google and IBM were the frontrunners and were decades away from something big. I'm glad I didn't buy into the hype and trusted myself.

You want to know how impractical quantum computing is today? You need a quantum computer + a traditional super computer to error-check the work. Quantum computers are not reliable in today’s form.

Here is your DD about Rigetti
A reminder for everybody:
In 2017, Rigetti built an 8-qubit quantum computer and deployed it to the cloud (see Fig. 1).
https://arxiv.org/pdf/1706.06570
In 2017, Rigetti built a 20-qubit quantum computer and used it to solve a combinatorial problem with machine learning (see Fig. 2).
https://arxiv.org/pdf/1712.05771
In 2021, Rigetti demonstrated, for the first time, the entanglement between two qubits fabricated on two separate chips. This work was published in Nature.
https://arxiv.org/pdf/2102.13293
In 2021, Rigetti invented a new type of tunable coupler which unlocks fast and high-fidelity two-qubit gate operations.
https://arxiv.org/pdf/2103.07030
In 2021, Rigetti discovered that quantum circuit Born machines show superior performance compared to restricted Boltzmann machines in modeling financial data.
https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/2058-9565/abd3db/pdf
In 2023, Rigetti was awarded a 5-year contract with Air Force Research Lab and Phase 2 of Darpa Quantum Program.
In 2024, Rigetti discovered a new fabrication technique that improves the relaxation time of superconducting qubits. This work was published in Nature.
https://arxiv.org/pdf/2304.13257
In 2024, Rigetti discovered a new technique for adjusting the resistance of Josephson junctions at room temperature. This discovery makes it easier to scale quantum computers based on superconducting qubits. The results were published in Nature.https://arxiv.org/pdf/2401.07415
In 2024, Rigetti and Riverlane successfully demonstrated low-latency quantum error correction achieving a mean decoding time per round below 1 microsecond.
https://arxiv.org/pdf/2410.05202v1
In 2024, Nvidia announced the successful application of AI to automate the calibration of a 9-qubit quantum computer built by Rigetti.
In 2024, Rigetti owns more than 150 patents in quantum computing.
https://patents.justia.com/assignee/rigetti-co-inc
In 2024, scientists proposed new ideas to scale superconducting quantum computers to thousands of qubits.
https://arxiv.org/pdf/2411.10406At the end of 2024, Rigetti built a quantum computer with 84 qubits with a two-qubit gate fidelity above 99%. This quantum computer has a similar performance to Willow, the chip built by Google.

u/Standard_Profile_130 13h ago
Seems like they are making incremental progress but still far from having truly practical or scalable applications yet. It will be impressive once you can run general purpose models like climate simulations with quantum computers.
→ More replies2
u/SaltKick2 10h ago
I didnt read through all this but that last bullet point, Rigetti's chip is nowhere near as good as Google's Willow. Their two qubit gate error rate is an order of magnitude larger than Google's, their coherence times are 5x shorter which means you can't run very long circuits and presumably they higher readout error rates.
In 2019 or so, many of their theorists left for Google and I think many of their hardware team also left. Their original CEO, Chad Rigetti was one of the first to work on superconducting qubits, and I heard he kinda sucked to work for, but he also is no longer at the company. While they likely have brilliant people still, It seems like they are pushing the business hard to make money, but why would anyone want to rent time on a device that doesn't do anything special outside of their own research on noisy, not useful qubits.
Unless there is some major breakthrough in superconducting hardware that isn't patented (or its discovered by Rigetti) I don't see how they will be able to compete with Google and IBM.

I’ve over 110 ten years of smooth brain trading experience, all of it on Robin Hood, we called it that cause back in the day your trades were sent into the stock exchange on a robins back. The hood was to protect the robins identity from the bonds men.
My advice is to buy while it’s dropping, and ride it all the way to the bottom. Once it’s hit rock bottom sell, makes counting your money easier giving you more time to be on the look out for the next one.
Stay safe regards, and remember to get your 5 a day crayons!

I know that in the short term this is terrible but just take advantage of this moment and buy the dip. Most of my quantum stocks I'm holding until I retire in 30 years. Between now and then there will be several setbacks. If you are holding onto decent shares just take a sec and breathe. I feel like this kind of stuff is normal. I haven't been following the quantum industry closely, but if there are any quantum sensing companies I would invest in those before I invested in quantum computing or quantum networking companies. I'm doing a PhD in a quantum lab, and whereas I hear about a lot of cool experiments being done in computing and networking, I still have no impression as to when we're gonna get anywhere near commerical applications for this stuff. Quantum sensing, on the other hand, is pretty straightforward. You put a magnet next to a vacancy center, you measure the photoluminescence while driving with a microwave field, and boom, magnetometry. You still have to package it and ruggedize it but the basic principles are right there.
I couldn't give a specific number of years when I'd expect quantum sensing applications to become popular, but I'd definitely bet on quantum sensing before networking or computing.

u/MyvaJynaherz 6h ago
My dad is hyped about quantum computing, and still doesn't believe me when I try to convince him that it will probably be towards the end of my lifetime before quantum may carve out a profitable niche based on performance, not hype.
