We're Back! Announcement
I hope you all had a a relaxing break from politics.
Edit: Apparently, Reddit is having issues showing new comments right now. Until this is resolved, new threads may be accidentally removed for a lack of a starter comment. We'll revert any accidental removals once Reddit is functioning properly.

Ok, just making sure, everyone else got a big laugh out of the Carter post and the modbot flagging it for not having a substantial starter comment?

Someone should create a moderatepoliticsonholiday sub so we all have some place to discuss news when this sub is out to lunch.
2
u/Specialist_Usual1524 3d ago
But then we would have to find mods. Ewww.
I know I’m not going to mod.

u/Specialist_Usual1524 3d ago
Heck, I get banned on occasion. I’ll go sit in my corner of shame but still read to learn here.
Modding? Id rather go manage a Dollar General in the bad area of town for minimum federal wage.

As soon as I read that this subreddit was going on break, I just knew that something big was going to happen during the break, and I was right. R.I.P Jimmy Carter.

u/Remarkable-Medium275 4d ago
I am going down to DC to visit him on the 9th. I doubt there will be a presidential funeral worth going to in the next few decades anyway.

u/LycheeRoutine3959 4d ago
is a 100 year old man dying really "Big"?
44
u/StarWolf478 4d ago edited 4d ago
There is a difference between big and surprising. While we all knew that it was just a matter of time before it happened, I'd say that the oldest living president in history passing away is still a big, newsworthy thing.
16
u/scrambledhelix Melancholy Moderate 4d ago
Making it to 100, no less! An achievement worth celebrating, I think the first former president to ever live that long, no?
20

u/Skullbone211 CATHOLIC EXTREMIST 4d ago
He was the first Democrat president to die since LBJ in 1972. Plus any president dying is big news I would say
19
u/Ed_Durr Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos 4d ago
There was 27 days Harry Truman and LBJ's deaths, and now 52 years (19,335 days) between LBJ and Carter's.
At this rate, Bill Clinton should pass away in the year 39,959 AD, Obama in 1.43 billion years, and Biden sometime after the heat death of the universe.

Welcome back everyone, your regularly scheduled food thinks will be returning. Made some bacon jam today for tomorrow. Rich, mildly sweet, thick with perfectly crisp chunks of bacon and perfectly golden onions. It’s gonna go great with the chorizo stuffed into puff pastry, poached eggs and melted cheese
5
u/Neglectful_Stranger 4d ago
Bacon jam? How does that work, you have cut up pieces of bacon in jam?
1
u/Trappist1 4d ago
Candied umami inside sweet fruit. Savory, salty, almost saccharine with a medley of textures and flavors. Sign me up.

Here’s a recipe! But it’s basically onions fried until soft, mixed with bacon and brown sugar to make a savory/sweet jam

u/SlamJamGlanda 3d ago
What’s the shelf life??
2
u/Oneanddonequestion Modpol Chef 3d ago
If properly jarred/canned and sealed it can stay fresh for 2-3 months in a fridge, but needs to be consumed within 4 to 6 weeks after opening after that. If you're just making, putting into a container and putting it in the fridge, 2-4 weeks. At room temperature, away from light and heat, about 3-4 days. When I make it though, its always going on something so it's all gone within 2 days.

I’ve had a very good break, glad y’all back. Time to start blaming everyone I don’t like for the state of world affairs again.

Are we allowed to say things not related to politics in this thread? In which case, did anyone get anything nice for Christmas? I got some crafting material which is neat.

u/KhaoticMess 4d ago
My wife and I got each other a new Gopro, which is something she loves taking on our camping trips, and I love editing her pics and videos, so it's a win-win.

Our family got COVID for the first time for Christmas. Luckily it was the mildest for the baby. His dad and myself though... we got quite sick.
Other than that, we got ourselves one of those nice new digital picture frames and a new Kindle Paperwhite, both of which I love.

Not a fan of the break. It’s difficult enough finding a moderate subreddit on Reddit so when you guys go on break I’m stuck 🥲

u/MillardFillmore 3d ago
Yeah, it was silly. Like the world doesn't just stop because it's the end of the year. A lot can happen, and did!

I agree mods are quick with the ban hammer here but while the sub can be conservative, it’s not full on MAGA nor full blown progressive.

I think it was better this time where posting was just disabled instead of the sub going private. It used to be I'd click on the sub out of habit and freak out for a moment seeing the sub-not-found page.

This subreddit is so distinct due to it being one of the only subs open to conservative and left-wing members. It also requires both sides to be civil.
It’s been my favorite sub on Reddit for many years because of these reasons. There are an abundance of subs on this platform where conservatives are faced with constant insults and downvotes or banned outright.
Why do you want this sub to become just another of those?

What you’re describing is the biggest misconception about this subreddit. It’s not oriented towards moderate political views. It’s just a sub for moderate/civil discourse.
Beyond that, it’s one of the most politically balanced subreddits on the platform. Conservative viewpoints don’t even make up the majority here, it’s just not dominated by left-wing perspectives.

u/Skullbone211 CATHOLIC EXTREMIST 4d ago
You do know that the "Moderate" in the name does not refer to the politics discussed, but rather the tone and engagement of the users, right?

The sub isn't really a moderate sub though. It's a sub where either side can come and talk, they just must talk respectfully.

You understand that sub has to do that because they are constantly brigaded from everywhere else on Reddit?
Also, hard to say they’re unpopular when the republicans just won the popular vote

Look at the demographics survey, this sub has a major blue majority
What you're experiencing is the only significant subreddit where there isn't viewpoint censorship for one side

Nice assumptions on your part. i just want a moderate sub to be unbiased but I guess this and other comments are proof that conservatives just want a place where they can pretend their views are centrist.
