Just saw three motorcycle cops setting up to speed trap on Delta Hwy Meetup

They are posted up near the Goodpasture exits, closer to Green Acres area. Both sides. Probably on Beltline near there too. Stay safe and ACAB

Cool cool, just stay in the right lane please

6

u/BasedGuerilla Apr 19 '22

Iight. Let's settle this. The speed limit is the speed limit. Drivers should be somewhere near the speed limit. Some drivers go slower. Some go faster. Cool. There is a need for a passing lane.

However, going too slow or too fast is a safety issue. We have expectations of other drivers and one thing that surely causes accidents is other drivers not meeting those expectations. The speed limit is one of those expectations. Again, drivers should be near the speed limit.

If the driver in front of me is going exactly the speed limit and I'm 4 mph faster than them I'm going to need to pass. The problem occurs when a driver, such as myself, goes to pass. These folks who are going 7 - 15 mph (or more) over the speed limit are an issue. They get right up on your ass and act like you're the problem on the road. They're in such a hurry and so entitled as to think people kinda sorta not trying to get a ticket are the problem.

u/polyaphrodite Apr 19 '22

I was just pondering how to vent about being tailgated, like not seeing their tires/almost headlights behind me, because I’m already going 5-10 miles above the posted limit to keep with traffic, and there is no safe place for me to “go”, since it’s city streets or the like….and then there are those who take a 2 lane stop light and decide it’s a 3 lane with the bike lane and car margin just big enough to pass through to turn…. It’s unfortunate.

-56

u/Earthventures Apr 18 '22

The purpose of the left lane is not to break the law.

62

u/lurkedfortooolong Apr 18 '22

You’re right. It’s to pass. So stay in the right lane unless you’re passing. If you’re going the same speed as the person on your right, you’re not passing and you’re breaking the law. If the right lane is empty and you’re going the speed limit in the left lane, you’re breaking the law.

-11

u/HunterWesley Apr 19 '22

It's actually a lane all of its own, you can drive in it.

-27

u/macymeebo Apr 18 '22 edited Apr 18 '22

Oregon is not a "keep right" state, fyi. WA is the only west coast state that is.

https://www.mit.edu/~jfc/right.html

38

u/lurkedfortooolong Apr 18 '22

ORS 811.315 states slower drivers need to stay to the right. In effect that makes Oregon a left lane passing state. In addition ORS 811.415 states passing on the right is illegal outside of the exceptions listed in that section.

Edit: the manual also says you should pass on the left.

-4

u/justacunninglinguist Apr 18 '22

People don't use the left lane as a passing lane here. They use the left lane as a "I'm going 20 over the speed limit so stay in the right lane."

11

u/lurkedfortooolong Apr 18 '22

Well you should be in the right lane if they’re going faster than you. (Excluding all other factors like traffic, whether you’re passing someone as well, etc.)

-15

u/justacunninglinguist Apr 18 '22

What if a car is going the speed limit in the left lane and a car is on their ass? They just want to speed.

15

u/lurkedfortooolong Apr 18 '22

Who cares what they want to do? It’s not your job to police them. If you have room to get over and you’re the slower car, you’re breaking the law too.

-5

u/macymeebo Apr 18 '22 edited Apr 18 '22

Of course you should pass on the left and you must pass on the left, but that's not what's at issue, here (fwiw, i believe passing on the right is illegal in all states). Oregon is equivocally not a "keep right" state. You only need to move to the left lane if you are slower than traffic. Perfectly legal to cruise in the left lane if you are not obstructing faster traffic.

ETA: I was just addressing the pieces bolded from your original comment. I agree with the rest, but the bolded portions are not true. "You’re right. It’s to pass. So stay in the right lane unless you’re passing. If you’re going the same speed as the person on your right, you’re not passing and you’re breaking the law. If the right lane is empty and you’re going the speed limit in the left lane, you’re breaking the law."

2

u/lurkedfortooolong Apr 18 '22

I see what you’re saying, but jsyk your first comment says “left lane passing state” which is what I went off of. And just to clarify the last part of my comment (which is what I think you’re responding to), if you’re going the speed limit in the left lane and someone is going faster than you, you’re breaking the law. I didn’t mean it as if you’re on an open road with no one around you.

1

u/macymeebo Apr 18 '22

You're right - my bad on phrasing. Edited.

8

u/macymeebo Apr 18 '22

Going slower than traffic in the left lane is breaking the law.

-2

u/serpentine1337 Apr 18 '22

That seems like a bit of a gray area (at least philosophically). Like, if I'm doing the same, or maybe a few miles per hour faster, as those in the right lane next to me, and you come buzzing up the left lane towards us, I'd argue I'm going the speed of traffic and you're just going too fast.

11

u/macymeebo Apr 18 '22 edited Apr 18 '22

You are technically passing in this scenario. The law doesn't require you to merge to the right lane if the path is obstructed or if you are passing slower traffic, but it does obligate you to get into the right lane when you have the chance. Pacing traffic in the right lane is obstruction and is illegal if there is faster moving traffic behind you.

1

u/mrsclausemenopause Apr 19 '22

You are either actively passing or you are not. An active pass can be a line of semis/slower traffic that takes a few miles but you should move to the right as soon as you can do so without having to slow down or cut someone off if there is anyone behind you.

1

u/serpentine1337 Apr 19 '22

Again, I was more talking philosophically. For pragmatic reasons they do it that way because asshole speeders are going to be asshole speeders, but I'd still argue the speeder is the asshole even if legally I'm supposed to pull over unless passing (assuming everyone is going the speed limit).

1

u/mrsclausemenopause Apr 19 '22

I wasn't disagreeing with you. In that case you are in the right just as long as you move over in a reasonable amount of time. Fastest doesn't equal right of way in the left amd I think that's where people get mixed up. You can be going under the speed limit and passing in someone even slower in the right and you are still using the passing lane correctly.

There have been studies that show road rage is more dangerous then speeding, I also anicdotily belive entitled assholes who speed are more likley to be the road rage type so by being someone who is staying in there way on purpose (not accusing you) is unlikely to do anything except encourage a more dangerous driver.

In sanctioned drag racing the rule of disqualification is first OR worst so even if you jump the light and disqualify yourself you can still win if the other guy crosses the center line as that's the "worse" action. I believe trying to police other citizens with your vehicle is almost always the worse action even though it may be a response to their first bad action of speeding.

Wow I wrote a lot, it's a slow day for me.

Cops hate this one simple trick...

22

u/beeblebr0x Apr 18 '22

Even better - commute via bike (when able)!

14

u/Eugenonymous Apr 18 '22

r/fuckcars loves this one simple trick...

9

u/ChildrensMilkFund Apr 18 '22

Go 55 on Chris Kilcullen Randy Papé Beltline (For the Cure) and tell me if you feel safe.

10

u/serpentine1337 Apr 18 '22

I mean I do 55-60 there all the the time without issue....

2

u/Stine2U Apr 19 '22

Jfc. Both those highways are I-5 in disguise.

2

u/CatPhysicist Apr 20 '22

I completely agree.

Delta Hwy is max 2 miles. To save 30s, you’ve got to be going 90mph (I hope my math is right).

I don’t get why people speed. The time you save is tiny compared to the amount of a speeding ticket.

63

u/EQwingnuts Apr 18 '22

I was coming on near mohawk and almost got side swiped by someone going about 80 and the cop was literally 50 feet away looking down at his phone.

31

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

I almost got side swiped by an old lady on Beltline who couldn’t hold a line if her life depended on it. She drove like she was drunk. Cop comes up behind me, I’m thinking “oh good they’ll pull her over. Nope - they just drove past us like no big deal. I don’t understand them. In Cottage Grove I saw two cop cars in the first 5 minutes of being in that town. In Eugene I have no idea where they are all hiding but I rarely see them.

14

u/duck7001 Apr 18 '22

They are all hanging out on Country Club Road.

3

u/serpentine1337 Apr 18 '22

That's especially true on the morning of Ducks football games.

1

u/AnotherElle Apr 19 '22

Forgive me being dense, but is this a joke about them being at/near that station all the time?

Eugene Drivers

Oregon Drivers

12

u/mrsclausemenopause Apr 18 '22

I see this trope here often but I just don't see it. I drive about 30k miles a year and stick to staying no more then 15 over on interstates and rural highways, 10 over on city highways and pretty much do the speed limit or 5 over pretty much everywhere else. So I am a speeder by definition and people generally aren't in the way. Im guessing you just piss people off often enough that they take pleasure in slowing you down.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '22

It’s confirmation bias. Everyone is positive the drivers from _______ are the WORST! Especially if they’re driving a ________!

People are overwrought apes; trust them at your peril.

-7

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '22

[deleted]

4

u/mrsclausemenopause Apr 19 '22

Why obviously not? About half of those are in Eugene/Springfield the rest going back and fourth from Cottage Grove. Yes this is r/eugene but Springfield and Cottage Grove are all part of the local area we're driving in

1

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '22 edited May 18 '22

[deleted]

0

u/mrsclausemenopause Apr 20 '22

I hope you realize some people drive as part of their job. You also seem pretty stuck on the within city limits part when the fact is these are local miles 95ish percent all in Lane County and in Eugene more then anywhere else.

4

u/gorgeous_wolf Apr 19 '22

"I repeat a tired trope on reddit that was never actually true because it reliably gets some upvotes from grumpy people" - /u/auntTifashouse

The only thing Oregon drivers really fuck up is four way stops ("You go, no, you go! Ok I'll...wait...you're going? Ok? No? Ok I'll go...shit").

I'd add turn signals but honestly no one in the USA appears to use those anymore.

2

u/mrsclausemenopause Apr 19 '22

Yeah the 4 way stops seems to be the biggest local specific driving issue. People are too nice to take the right of way they have, yeah its annoying but once you learn to just quickly take the wave and go it becomes a non issue.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '22 edited May 18 '22

[deleted]

0

u/gorgeous_wolf Apr 19 '22

I was born and raised in Oregon, I've spent 4 decades here driving in various cities, and I've never seen this issue. So yeah, I think you're wrong.

Should you wish to formally debate the existence of these -15mph drivers, I will meet you at the location of your choosing, whereupon I will suggest that the entire argument is silly and we should have a beer instead.

All the problem drivers are in lifted Dodge Rams with the ugliest thin blue line decals imaginable to signal to the cops that they're down to suck their dick, so it's unlikely.

36

u/cosmic_sheriff Apr 18 '22

20

u/EldenRingWormm Apr 18 '22

yeah I've spent time in Indiana, a state where males over the age of 25 have an average of 2.1 DUIs, so you learn the type.

5

u/evil_mike Apr 18 '22

While I agree they are PART of the problem, I also see shitty high school/college-aged drivers tailgating people like crazy and SUPER OLD people driving waaaaay too slow on Delta and Beltline (in both lanes!!)

3

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

especially since it's raining.
people seem to drive a lot more stupidly when it rains.

23

u/VanillaGorilla611 Apr 18 '22

You can't end this with ACAB when the amount of accidents and people who are speeding on the beltline is INSANE. I live around that area and can see the freeway from where I live and its NON stop speeding. They are doing their job lol Don't speed and you wont get a ticket.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

I live close to Barger Exit and I can always hear the amount of speed happening over there. People will burn out at the stoplight and go flying onto the Beltline.

-7

u/SLJ7 Apr 18 '22 edited Apr 18 '22

I feel like this sub just has an ACAB culture; I see people hating on police every other day and that's not an exaggeration. I agree with you, obviously.

*singsong* Downvotes make it less visible, not less true!

-8

u/warrenfgerald Apr 18 '22

Which doesn't make sense because most of the people who don't like police officers are enthusiastic advocates for government. The police are the enforcement arm of government. If the police did not exist who in their right mind would pay any taxes?

6

u/wyrdone42 Apr 18 '22

It's not that we dislike police.

We dislike police that are immune from repercussions and the culture that fosters. The abuse, aggression and "shoot first and ask questions later" mentality. That have no oversight other than by other police officers.

We dislike police that are equipped and funded like an arm of the military and do 95% of their recruiting from the military. The training received in said military is that unless you are part of them, you are the enemy. Which is a not great mix when deployed against other citizens.

We dislike police that can seize anything they wish and you will never see ever again unless you are rich and have a lawyer on retainer.

We dislike police that are there for the primary job of collecting "sin taxes" in the form of ticket writing and will do nothing outside of that because it doesn't bring funds into the department.

0

u/warrenfgerald Apr 19 '22

So you just listed a handful of hyperbolic, negative anecdotes about law enforcement.

You could have just said that police are a necessary component of government but I think they can improve in several key areas. Unfortunately that measured sentiment will not win many internet brownie points.

7

u/washington_jefferson Apr 19 '22

Any term or slogan that includes “all” is pretty worthless in my opinion. “Well, we don’t really mean all cops…” Well, then don’t say it, and don’t spray paint it everywhere.

21

u/RottenSpinach1 Apr 18 '22

Nah, it's about time some speeding pricks had their asses handed to them.

20

u/adiofan88 Apr 18 '22

I just don’t get why y’all need to do 90+.

4

u/LaVidaYokel Apr 18 '22

Ah, a person of culture, I see.

14

u/shlammyjohnson Apr 18 '22

So we should all just become vigilantes and pit maneuver people that speed and endanger everyone else?

I've never seen worse driving than the last 2 years in Eugene. I'm happy cops are actually giving out tickets to these idiots for once.

11

u/Guygenius138 Apr 18 '22

Boo to everyone on here hoping the road pirates take our money.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

Good. Maybe they can give Karen and her shitty boyfriend in his shitty Camero tickets for driving like assholes.

Here's a tip, if you don't drive like a fucktard, then you don't need to worry about "speed traps".

-7

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

The only thing that speed traps help are police departments. They are a public nuisance that can cause people to reactively make poor driving decisions in the moment

1

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

Now that's a take..

7

u/2peacegrrrl2 Apr 18 '22

So much trash on here. What I would expect and why it’s unsafe to bike here these days. So many fucking assholes live here now and drive as fast as possible with 0 regard for others’ lives. Yes, you are so badass in that lowered Honda with the loud exhaust.

2

6

5

u/DoggedDoggity Apr 18 '22

Good looking out.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

Yes, ACAB, but also, I see how people drive on belt line 2x daily and it’s scary. We can’t be that desperate to get to our jobs to continually drive so fast and reckless. And the trash and debris on beltline, it’s just a very unpredictable stretch of road. Homeless people riding bikes toward the oncoming lane, shit flying out of beater trucks, semis entering and exiting. There’s always some dickhead in a mustang or a WRX doing 100+ in the right lane. I’ve even been pulled over by one of those bike cops before for speeding a bit, and they were super nice and reminded me that there’s a lot of old people and younger drivers and families and tired commuters… id just like to see less plywood and scrap debris in the shoulders…

6

u/chasingcomet2 Apr 18 '22

I had to drive beltline two times a day for 8 years. I’m beyond glad I have no need to drive beltline at all now. Awful road with awful drivers.

3

u/zetlali Apr 18 '22

I find it strange that so many people get angry when other drivers speed. Most European cars are designed to drive at much faster speeds on the Autobahn. If someone passes me going 20MPH faster than me I really don't give it a second thought. It's only marginally more dangerous provided their speed is safe for road conditions, their vehicle can safely drive those speeds, and they allow for enough space to stop when needed. The only behavior I find annoying about people that speed is if they tailgate.

2

u/shooter9260 Apr 19 '22

This 100%. I wish we us a system like the Autobahn but it would never work in the US because of the vigilante culture we’ve created over time.

I’ve always wondered as well about if racetracks or designated “speed zones” would curtail a little bit of speeding. Obviously a lot of speeders are late for things (hell, I’m almost late for work most mornings and sometimes I have to go a little fast to make it on time), but some people just want to go fast. If there was a spot people could do so in every decent sized city I think it could help.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

Thank you for letting us know.

Really surprised by the amount of pro-speed trap members of this reddit. I shouldn't be, but I am.

4

u/serpentine1337 Apr 18 '22

You're surprised that people are happy that the cops might catch folks that are driving recklessly? I wish they'd caught the guy I saw going like 80, on Beltline, on a motorcycle yesterday.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

I wish they'd caught the guy I saw going like 80, on Beltline, on a motorcycle yesterday.

Yes, I am. Speed traps are a well studied public nuisance. They don't solve the problem they seek to alleviate and in many cases, drivers reactively do dangerous things when they see one nearby.

Speed traps are good for the police departments they fund. That's it.

0

u/serpentine1337 Apr 18 '22

So, what's your solution? Do nothing? Speed cameras? Make the roads harder to go fast on?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

[deleted]

2

u/serpentine1337 Apr 18 '22

Sure that'd help too. Of course apparently ACAB, so OP wouldn't agree to that I'm guessing?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '22

My solution is not to do nothing. Speeding, speed limits and the prescription and enforcement of each, is a thorny and complex issue. Here's a pretty good article that breaks it down and suggests some alternatives to our current treatment: https://slate.com/business/2021/12/speed-limit-americas-most-broken-law-history.html

0

u/Fiala06 Apr 18 '22

Use Wazeapp (like Google Maps) and mark them as your driving along. You can use it to mark other things as well such as objects on the road, animals, accidents and more.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '22

Those motorcycle cops are some badass riders, too bad they put ‘em on such poor bikes… slower to stop on than most cars, slower than a 370 single cylinder:/ not really good for much but looking aggressive lol. But let’s face it, it’s the better rider at the end of the day who knows their machine. I can’t wait to put the cops to shame on the track this summer for all the tickets this yearXD

1

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '22

All cops are not bastards

1

u/Double-Background-84 Apr 20 '22

Why can't I see my comment? Why does it have -7 points? What does that mean? What does Karma points mean? What in the heck did I do now?

-7

u/Double-Background-84 Apr 18 '22

Do you not care that fatal accidents are happening all the time now. You are warning speeders and crazy drivers to stop speeding for two minutes to avoid a ticket! Seriously? How about helping children not lose mommy or daddy? Wow, you are something.

-1

u/Daisy_Destruction Apr 18 '22

By how much should we cut the police budget to pay for mass transit?

2

u/dingboodle Apr 19 '22

Meh. Wouldn’t matter. People hate public transportation. They claim it’s not going to make anyone rich so there’s no point. Also socialism. It’s sad but America is thoroughly brainwashed on believing only personal gas chugging pigbeasts are a viable form of locomotion. So you’d just end up with a half assed compromise where they claim hybrid buses are practically light rail. Ohhh wait…

1

u/Double-Background-84 Apr 19 '22

We do not cut the police for anything. We need EPD more now then ever.

Why has bus service worked for people and students in Eugene for, I don't know, what, 60 years?

0

u/Daisy_Destruction Apr 19 '22

If it works so well, why are so many millions of innocent babies smeared across our roads, necessitating constant oversight by squads of armed men?

Do we have too many road deaths, compelling us to fund mass transit by cutting police? Or are the deaths not so bad, meaning we don't need so many police? Pick one.

1

u/Double-Background-84 Apr 19 '22

What the heck are you talking about? Sorry, I don't get what you are saying.

1

u/Daisy_Destruction Apr 19 '22

You claim that there are many deaths requiring police. But you also claim that we have sufficient mass transit. Those two statements are mutually exclusive. People aren't dying on roads because they simply love to drive around. It's because we don't have sufficient mass transit.

You chose an ineffective and authoritarian solution to a problem. Bad job.

1

u/Double-Background-84 May 09 '22

Your opinion. Nice try.
