Ty Cobb’s golf tourney prize Likely Solved
My wife found this at a thrift store here in the Bay Area. She was going to melt it down and make some jewelry and I said no way. I did the research and found the archived newspaper talking about this golf tournament. He participated in and this appears to be what he won. No idea how it ended up at a thrift store but the country club is also local.

Hey there- my name is Jason Simonds from Heritage Auctions, I am the Sports Consignment Director here in NYC. This thing is amazing. Don’t melt down a trophy that Ty Cobb won. If you shoot me an email with some pictures to jsimonds@ha.com I will ask a couple experts and get you an appraisal on this for free. If you choose to auction, I would be happy to include this in an upcoming Catalog Sale. A beautiful piece.

It is very hard to put a dollar amount on this one of a kind item. Take it to or mail away to a very high end sport memorabilia auction and put it up for sale i think that is where it would bring the most. Or get it appraised and List on ebay

Hard to put a dollar amount you say? Seems like they settled on .99 cents.

In that case, I'll offer double. Hell, let's call it $2.00. I'll even pay shipping, cause I'm a good guy.

Absolutely do not put it on ebay. At best you'll lose like 15% in fees, more likely and at worst you're buyer will return it and probably just send back a rock in a box.

u/Freerollingforlife 1d ago
Where else would you sell it - an auction house will take more than 15%

eBay is great but not for high end one off items. Years back I had a 2k + book.. so I listed it on eBay for $1200.. Figured a quick sale for something I paid a few dollars for.
Well only got low ball offers. So I decided to send it specialty book auction. Sold for over 3k.. The buyers just weren’t looking on for this rare on eBay! Sure I paid 25% in fees.. but they got that top dollar!

Yeah wouldn’t disagree that if you can find a speciality sale for high value items you’d certainly want to explore that.

How this made it to the floor at a Goodwill is beyond me. They usually catch good stuff like this. Congrats, incredible find.

So wait, GW sold a SILVER dish for .99? That’s insane. Meanwhile over here if you want a bracelet that’s fake, It’s gonna be 5.99.

I don't think it is same Ty Cobb
18
u/levybunch 1d ago
It could be the same one. Cobb died in 1961. Apparently he was an avid golfer and as competitive in golf as he was in baseball.
-17
u/melkor555 1d ago
Maybe but more likely if it was Georgia and I would think they would say something like baseballer ty cobb or some other reference.

After retirement, Ty Cobb lived in Atherton, California, a mere 30 miles from Pleasanton, California, where the Castlewood Country Club is located.

u/Darryl_Lict 1d ago
Yup. He spent his retirement pursuing his off-season avocations of hunting, golfing, polo, and fishing.
In the winter of 1930, Cobb moved into a Spanish ranch estate on Spencer Lane in the affluent town of Atherton located south of San Francisco, California, on the San Francisco Peninsula.

I doubt it was Trump's Lawyer.
1
u/Kealanine 19h ago
What does that even mean 🤣
1
u/Darryl_Lict 1h ago
Ty Cobb, not the baseball player, was Whitehouse attorney during the prior Trump administration.

Times were different. Shouldn't involve the Woke mentality when it comes to Antiques there's collectors out there for every famous person especially Sports Memorabilia.

u/jellystoma 1d ago
"Times were different" It wasn't ok then either.

This isn't the sub for it This is to find out about an item and what it's value is not what you would do with it.

I don’t think that’s true
5
u/Dizzydsmith 1d ago
It’s pretty well documented that he was. I don’t think that’s the discussion for here though. This is a very unique piece of history and this piece really should be in a museum. I think this is easily a 5 figure item.
2
u/JaRulesLarynx 1d ago
Also well documented that he wasn’t the monster portrayed in the book/movie. Knowing that I’d think it would make a person feel better about the piece.
Agree 5 figures. Even cooler since it’s a trophy for something unrelated to the reason he is famous. I’m not sure how much that would increase the value. I’d be interested to find out what it’s appraised at.
