Early in my career and thank God, I didn’t get it, I was applying for a sales role and one of the biggest things that they said that I’ve carried with me for like 15 years now. Businesses don’t do business people do business.
My best professional relationships were built over a bottle for better or worse
→ More replies27
u/Foggy_OG 5d ago
Very true. Everything, And I mean, EVERYTHING business is relationship based. You can try to Billy Bean somebody until their head spins with all your proprietary data, analysis and years of hard work, and some jackass with a fancy title and mediocre-at-best business results will take that same guy to an exclusive golf course at an exclusive country club with his exclusive membership, fuck around on the links all day, and get the business. It’s not about what you know… Hell it’s not even about performance or results … It’s about convincing somebody on an emotional level that you are the right guy for the deal. I see it all the time, And it is especially rampant in the institutional investment world. People choose based on emotion and they lose a lot of money because of it. But for us sales guys, it doesn’t even matter… We make money based on Transactions. If shit goes south just blame it on the market lmao. It fucking blows my mind.
So what’s the moral of the story? Lease the absolute sickest car you can afford, Buy the most expensive country club membership that you can afford, And take your prospects to Vegas and get them a back room at the spearmint. Nobody gives a shit about data and charts when they have a couple 10s in the back room with their new buddies. It’s all a write off anyway.

Nearly shat myself when I found that goldmine or a channel and his livestreams. Guy was always portrayed like a dick but in those livestreams he appears to be quite grounded, albeit with little patience for nonsense. He mightve gone a little crazy but theres little gold nuggets left on his path to madness
→ More replies29
u/vacca-stulti 5d ago
the main reasons I know people say he’s a dick is because he increased the price of some drug by 5,000% and also bought the only copy of a certain Wu-Tang album and is essentially gatekeeping it from everyone
15
u/robmafia 5d ago
the latter is kind of the opposite. wu-tang, deep in their decline, made some hokey record and made a big deal about it being a single pressing and tried to get bajillions of money for it. there wasn't much interest. shkreli bought it and would play it repeatedly on livestreams (and was constantly asked to play it, basically)
eg, wu-tang gatekept it and were mad that shkreli was playing it on streams (which, iirc, they said they were fine with, in moderation or some shit)
23
u/UnwiseTrade 5d ago
Thing is, allegedly, he was making the insurance companies pay for it. I dont quite recall his mechanism but he claimed he had found some loop around the system where he would divert the costs to the insurace companies and uninsured people would get the drug for free.
Sounds a bit too nice to be true though so 🤷
→ More replies20
u/txcorse 5d ago
This was a drug that everyone stopped producing because there were more effective drugs available. The drug was used to treat toxoplasmosis, but the media kept shouting from the rooftops that Shkreli was taking drugs away from AIDs patients. It was an entirely disingenuous smear campaign because he was on the wrong side of the aisle. He was jailed after he started getting a little bit trolly asking someone to get locks of Clinton's hair. That was a bridge too far.

Nah, give me Bill Hwuang.
I don’t think there is a single person, that is that skilled at losing money, that has lost that much money in such a short period of time.
He literally lost 8B in 10 days, and 20B in 2 days. Undefeated.
27
u/SirGlass 6d ago
Hwuang is an odd one, like I literally cannot understand what he was doing, or what his actual plan was?
I mean from what I know he isn't a total idiot , he should have known how shit works . However it seems then decided to
Enter a highly leverages trade using margin on a concentrated set of stocks
By entering this highly leveraged trade you push the stocks up
Your margin goes up so you borrow more money
With the borrowed money buy a bigger position into this set of highly concentrated stocks
Repeat to infinity ?
Like when this happens you should realize that you cannot make money because as soon as you want to unwind the trade the price will drop.
With Pump and Dumps you usually need to find other investors to take a position , however when you are taking a 50 billion dollar position , well its hard to find enough marks with that much money?
I am seriously perplex what was going on in his head
17
u/thri54 6d ago
Back then there was a decent number of value investors that thought you could basically slap the Netflix multiple on Viacom and Discovery.
And in fairness, all streaming services were growing at bonkers rates just after COVID. Pencil out a few more years of growth, add in the economies of scale content creation has, give it high high terminal multiple bc it’s a new-age business and a 10-yr is currently trading at 1.5% yield, and wow, you’ve got a $100+ per share valuation!
He obviously didn’t have an exit plan. I think he genuinely thought there would be a streaming melt up in value broadcasting companies, and he wasn’t single-handedly sucking up all the liquidity in those stocks.

30
u/EnoughImagination435 6d ago
The difference between Vivek and Shkreli is very maginal, but the gist of it is with Vivek is that Vivek had legal counsel and followed what he was told to do. He properly filed the SEC paperwork, and though his public statements later turned out to be wrong, his handling of the situation appears legal.
The reality for Vivek, though is, he has never run a profitable enterprise. His success has been only as a capitalist.
Compared to Musk, he's just a conman. Or even Trump - Trump runs profit making enterprises. Vivek's companies only product has been their stock.

He even is able to raise money for his next venture from a reputable VC, so it is obvious nobody views him as criminal.
Neumann is currently worth 2.2B officially. Others in the post can’t compare. Maybe Shrekli but he is far from being a billionaire.

Luigi. I invest, I engage in the capitalist's game, but its all fucking bullshit where the general rule is that the rich get that way by exploiting everything, including every man, woman, and child on this Earth for profit. People like to talk about how so called communist governments have killed people, without taking a brief moment to think about the millions upon millions of people capitalism has killed either through direct murder at the hands of the rich or the governments that back them, or from shit like denying food, clothes, shelter, and medicine to people who need it because they do not have enough money to pay for the things that make the rich even richer.
I would gladly give up all of the money I have invested to live in a world where the most egregious and unjust socioeconomic system ever dreamed of did not exist. True story.
