Freedom Act
On Wikipedia, it doesn't sound so bad. What's up with it?
The USA Freedom Act was meant to end the bulk collection of Americans' metadata, end the secret laws created by the FISA court, and introduce a "Special Advocate" to represent public and privacy matters. Other proposed changes included limits to programs like PRISM, which incidentally retains Americans' Internet data, and greater transparency by allowing companies such as Google and Facebook to disclose information about government demands for information.

That makes me shiver, how those in power use "citizen" as a subjugating pejorative instead of the empowerment that it is meant to be. It is such a warped and terrifying principle, every free person should bristle at this.

Freedom Act: Uniting and Strengthening America by Fulfilling Rights and Ending Eavesdropping, Dragnet-Collection, and Online Monitoring Act

Non-American here, is that not what you want? Am I misunderstanding something?
204
u/ademnus Jun 01 '15
Actually, what we want is for the Patriot Act to just end and stay gone. The USA Freedom act does curtail just some of the activities we don't like, but it enables the rest to continue -and it manages to shift data collection from the NSA to the phone companies instead.
"We don't want you to steal all our cars and hide them in your garage!"

Yeah, that's page one. Pages two through seven hundred detail all the ways in which these basic concepts can be legally ignored, and why the government gets to keep telling citizens to go fuck themselves.
Or, at least, that's what most americans go ahead and assume at this point. I have no idea if it's true, but that's how basically every other bill is structured these days. No reason to think this one is any different.

Maybe I'm just too pessimistic nowadays, but even if it's "eliminated" in an "official capacity" ... I don't see it ever being "eliminated".

You are probably right; it will not be eliminated. But this is a big step. You might ask why.
There is a big difference from something being covert and illegal, to being legal and out in the open, for several reasons.
1) Political and economic cost of doing it. Yes, you can do it, but who authorizes it will pay a political price for it, especially if it comes out into the open. These things cost money. You can only hide so much overhead in a budget. This will tend to lessen the extent of use. It might be used for, I dunno, like real terrorism.
2) Breaking the seal. Making it illegal and shitty to fuck with civil liberties bleeds over into other realms. Notice how we started to openly spy and torture at the same time? That's not a coincidence.
In your analogy, sure you may pick up a whopper. But you will do it less for fear your wife will find out. Also, you tend to drink and smoke less since you feel better eating less junk food and don't want to spoil it with other vices.

I believe this covers section 215, which is the big one for bulk data collection. There's lots of problems with the Patriot Act, but I believe that's the first big one that everyone sort of agrees needs fixing.
So, while it might only be 2%, it's a pretty significant 2%.

u/lambro101 Jun 01 '15
I've said this before on reddit about Massie and how he is such a genuine guy:
I had a few friends in common with him via Facebook. So I set him a message about becoming an intern in his office. Not only did he respond within 24 hours, but he directed me toward his chief of staff's personal email about applying for the position. I didn't end up doing applying as I found a different type of job that summer, but it made me like him even more.

No one is gonna harass you for supporting an issue. That is your problem. When people start supporting issues and leave behind political parties, then we can actually get some shit done. Ffs, just say you support this cause or that cause, no need to say if your a liberal democrat or not; you're labeling yourself, which has no point because even democrats disagree on so many issues.

First and foremost, the dude actually seems to give a fuck. Despite personal danger and his own political party, he actually cares.
Second, he can split up his personal beliefs from what's best politically. He's personally very against gay marriage, drugs, etc. However, he's supported legalizing gay marriage or at least officially making it a state issue, same with drugs, marijuana in particular.
He's against spying on citizens.
He acknowledges global warming and that it is a serious threat to be dealt with, he just has a different method of wanting to handle it than democrats.
More questionable topics would become state rights, allowing many things to pass much easier as they don't have to go through the ridiculously long process of becoming a federal matter. If gay marriage was a state right, it would have been approved 15 years ago.
He's got balls and his hearts in the right place. Can't say the same for the last 4-5 presidents.
