Leatherman PST

There is a seller in my city who is selling Leatherman PSTs in blister packs and cardboard boxes. Which packaging version do you think is more collectible or harder to find? They are being offered for $50.

Wingman Plier Issues

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hey everyone! Super excited to have gotten my first leatherman for Christmas. I went with the wingman because I really wanted spring assisted pliers. Using them for a few weeks now, I notice that if I use excess pressure on the pliers they that tend to stick. Anyone else having this problem and any way to combat it? I’m sure it’s nothing a little oil can’t fix. If so, any oil brand recommendations? Thanks guys!

Some of my many tools

Many tools…

I saw my first Leatherman in 1986, when a roommate got back from deployment on an aircraft carrier.

He showed me his original PST, I was impressed, but not enough to get one. The non-locking tools were ok, and the pliers were uncomfortable to use. Interesting, but whatever.

A Victorinox Swiss Champ was my companion, for years. Then one day, on board the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, I did someone a favor, and they gave me a Leatherman, like you see in the middle. It had a broken blade but I fixed it and sharpened it and it worked great, for years.

As a metalworker, I fixed the shortcoming of the pliers being uncomfortable to use by making stainless steel covers. Now we were talking!

I still didn't care for the non-locking tools, using the screwdrivers in earnest meant being careful as the damn things folding on you sometimes HURT!

But the PST, was on daily carry on my belt, along with the Swiss Champ.

From left, an OHT I picked up on fb marketplace. Because I could. It's a fun tool.

Next is one of my Super Tools. I built similar hand guards for it, appreciating immensely the locking tools! I need to send it in for a new head or just grind it down even.

Next is a Pulse. I found one in a Target on sale for $35 right before an at sea period of a few weeks. That one got stolen at sea and I went to get another when I got home and WHAT?! They quit making them? I have had one since, I think I had to go on Ebay to get another one, for more than my first one, for sure! The Pulse is the perfect blend of features, size, and comfort of use, to me. What a powerhouse!

Then I have a Super Tool 200, with a Pulse style locking system. Next is my Arc, I got it for $165 on fb marketplace. Whoop whoop!

Next is one of my Waves. Another great blend of features and size. I wrote Leatherman when they came out, nice tool, I said, but the non-locking tools were a dealbreaker for me. What were you thinking?

Leatherman replied, well, we already have the tooling, so tough. So I didn't get one until they worked out the locking tool version a few years later.

Next is my Free P2. My first one was stolen, (Aaargh!) and this is my second one, used off Ebay. Broken tip on the blade, I fixed and sharpened it.

Then the Ozark Trail Multiforce. A Wave clone, for less than $50? Why not? A nice tool, but not the best file.

I got a Rocktol Gen-R for Christmas. Another Wave clone, but what a nice tool. I'd rather have the file than the damn wood chipper blade. But it's a really well made tool. I still prefer the Wave to the clones…

Next is a Gerber Scout. I have had a few Gerbers. The action, like the OHT, is fun to fidget with.

Middle top is an original PST. This one was my Dad's, I made the covers for his too. I'm not sure where my original on is.

Middle middle is one of my Micras I got from a Thrift Store (TSA surrenders) for a few backs each.

Middle bottom is my usual EDC now, a Sog Powerpint. Can't beat the value, size and usefulness of the Powerpint, even if I put a clip on the Pulse. The bit driver when it's closed is genius, I carry the Leatherman ratcheting driver and bits with it and damn, it's pretty damn useful.

Not shown is my Surge, I got on sale at a Navy Exchange for $35, and my Wingman. I also was carrying my $30 or so pawn shop Crunch, I recently posted that here with the homemade pocket clip.

This is not all my multi-tools, but it's all I could find right now. I think I have a full size Gerber in my wife's car in her glove box.

Why yes, I am a tool using mammal. I was a metalworker (Aviation Structural Mechanic) and welder in the Navy. I sure did a lot of non-aviation repairs around my two carriers with a multi-tool!

On my last carrier my command started giving me shit about non-approved tools on my belt, so I made a leather pouch and moved my multi-tool into my back pocket, next to my wallet. Out of sight, out of mind, but in reach!

So that's my (mostly) Leatherman walk down memory lane. Enjoy!

I got these two while I was in the military. Unfortunately during my 2nd deployment the filer broke on my Crunch so I stopped using it. I loved that little tool though. Very handy. I’m going to try to get rid of the rust on it.

Question for all Germans

Short version for international members: There is no German leatherman sub, so I have to post here. I have questions about using the warranty in Germany. I know that warranty in the US seems to be amazing, but I can't really find anything recent about Germans that used the warranty.

Finally got my Skeletool KB in. Newest edition to my slow growing leatherman collection. Was a bit smaller than expected. I do love the color combo. I might have to buy the opposite matching serrated edge one now. I know some of you also found a thumb grip opener thing for the blade to make it easier? Any recs on a brand or style of opener? Do you use it as much as you thought you would? So far I dig it. I don't think this will be an EDC for me but more like a night out on the town kind of vibe to it. Or leave it my office drawer for packages etc. But I'll determine that after I carry it for about a week or so. Enjoy your weekend all!

Pocket clip for Wave +?

Hi Leatherman enthusiasts. I am in the UK and got my bf a Wave + for Christmas. It came with a beautiful but not very functional leather pouch that you have to slide onto a belt. He needs a clip so it can go on different belts or pockets easily. I've seen some videos of clips online, will it invalidate the warranty if we install one? Any reccos?

Leatherman Customer Service Timeline

Does leatherman customer service typically take over a week to respond? I ordered seven as groomsmen gifts and one of the rebars I ordered came in a box that was unsealed and the rebar itself is unbelievably stiff to close. I sent an email on January 6th (and got a confirmation that it created a case) but haven't heard back. They've also ignored my follow up email to the case on January 9th.

I also waited on their phone line for half an hour but couldn't get through to anyone. Is this typical for them? I wouldn't have spent $700 with this company if I knew they were worse than amazon.
