Please help me treat my Queensland bottle tree.

Brisbane, Queensland. There is gel/sap coming from several spots around the trunk and one branch. We realised the base of the tree has become all soft and was easy to dig out. The two big dark spots on the trunk sound hollow when we knock on them. The tree never has water sitting around its base and the soil seems to drain well although it has been raining a lot the last few weeks. Only other major thing that’s happened near this tree in the last 6 months is that we removed a very large tree that was shading it about 20m to its left. Really need advice on how to treat this tree.

Are my Kangaroo paws dead??

Planted these mid year, and they were full of colour and loving life. The began to have their flowers die off early in the beginning of summer, so I cut them back like I was told and have left them be since....I water them a few times a week, mainly if it's been hot.

Are they too far gone and dead? Or will they somehow spring back to life later in the year??

(Perth, Western Australia)

Do I have a sick Gumtree?

The tree is shedding lots of very thick bark and plenty of dead small branches are falling.

I've included a pic of some of the recent bark it has shed, which is thicker than my thumb.

There are also deep cracks up the trunk from almost ground level and then the lowest limb has some kind of deep rot with fungus in it.

I'm unsure what type of gum it is, but it's not a smooth bark variant I'm pretty sure. Keen for some opinions 🙏🏼

Wollemi pine question

I have a wollemi pine in south west Victoria. Last year had male and female pine cones so I'm hoping there was some pollination. The female cones have pumped up nicely over the last 16 months or so and tips are starting to go a brownie rust colour. Does anyone know how to tell when the cones are ready to try and harvest seeds. From what I've read the seeds drop quickly once they're ready and I don't want to risk missing any that might be there. Second question. This year there are female cones and no male. Wondering if the cones are taking energy from the tree and would it be better to remove them? Thank you in advance for any advice

Thank you in advance

Seeking Advice: Transitioning from Bush Regeneration to Animal-Focused Roles in NSW, Australia

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working full-time as a bush regenerator in NSW, Australia, and I’m looking to transition into a more animal-centered role while maintaining outdoor work, variety, and opportunities for growth. I’ve been in this role since August 2024 and hold a Cert III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management, a White Card, and a Herbicide Chem Cert.

My volunteering efforts include leading weed management at a local wildlife sanctuary and participating in events like AABR Fest. I’m also planning to join WIRES to gain hands-on experience with wildlife rehabilitation.

Why I’m Posting

While I’ve enjoyed bush regeneration, my deeper passion lies with animals. I’m exploring roles that focus on pest monitoring, wildlife surveying, bird banding, or threatened species management. However, I’m still uncertain about the exact career paths to target and the qualifications or experience I’ll need to make this transition.

I’ve reached out to NPWS, TAFE instructors, and industry friends who suggested roles like Discovery Ranger, National Parks Field Officer, and council Bushland Officer.

What I’m Asking

  1. Career Ideas: What roles should I consider that focus on working with animals in NSW? Are there opportunities I might not be aware of?
  2. Qualifications/Experience: What skills, certifications, or education would help me transition? Are there specific programs, courses, or volunteering opportunities I should pursue?

Thanks in advance for your time and insights

Vine on a Gumtree - Options

Have a beutiful gumtree in our back garden but the base of it is a bit damaged....pretty sure its some old mechancal damage.

Keen to "beutify" this a little bit and was considering growing some vines over the damaged area, possible supported by a wire trelace around the tree. Any ideas - obviously keen to make sure that any vine we encourage to grow on the tree doesn't cause a knock on impact / adverse health to the tree.

ID and pruning advice

Post image
4 Upvotes

Can someone let me know the name of this tree? I would really like to prune it back hard to reduce its overall size. The previous owner had done a hard prune before but i would like to go a bit harder. Maybe right back to 2-3m off the ground. Is this going to kill it or would it come back from a hard prune? About where the red line is.

Weird growths on Gum branches

Post image
15 Upvotes

My mum has this what I think is a lemon scented gum in her front yard which has these weird growths on the trunk and branches towards the canopy.

She had a lawn guy who was working on the neighbours house knock on her door and said the branches were dangerous and at risk of falling.

Any ideas what it could be? She’s making contact with a local arborist but would I’d like to get some feedback in the interim.

Thanks!

- RECOMMENDATION Looking for a Eucalyptus Ficifolia “Fairy Floss” Grafted - struggling to find!

Hi! I’ve been looking around Sydney and the wider region for a couple weeks now for a Eucalyptus Ficifolia and can’t seem to find one. I’ve been calling quite a few of the native nurseries and they seem to be out of stock. This post is mainly aimed at those who might have seen one recently/people who work at nurseries. Thanks so much!

Book recommendations for SA mid north

Hi all, looking to revegetate a property, is anyone aware of a good book for endemic species in the area? We have a lot of gum and acacia already, and looking to put in some callistemon for more bird activity.

Also what sort of plants can I use to encourage reptiles?

Please help identifying this shrub

I feel like it's a common one as I see them around quite a bit and they used to be in my primary school growing up. But my google skills are failing me. The closest I came was Thryptomene saxicola...but I'm not sure that's it.

It has tiny pink flowers all over in spring. It is near impossible to maintain as when I cut it back it exposes the dark woody interior which is quite ugly. When you crush the fern-like leaves it gives a strong scent.

And best of all....I suspect handing it is healing my excema/dermatitis.

Thank you for any ideas!
