Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail - ‘Pictomancer’ Trailer FF XIV

u/Baithin Jan 07 '24
It’s definitely silly but it’s growing on me. XIV has tons of edgelord jobs so this balances it out.
Curious to see the full kit.
46
u/EggLayinMammalofActn Jan 07 '24
Same. I was pretty neutral on it when I first saw the trailer, but the more I watch the trailer the more I like the job esthetic and tone. It's very different from any other job in the game, and you don't have to play it if you don't like it.
For me, it ultimately depends on how it plays.
12
u/Barlowan Jan 07 '24
Have you played bravely default 2? They have that job there. Honestly this trailer might have sold me the game.
-3
u/CanadianYeti1991 Jan 07 '24
You have to play with it, though.
9
u/EggLayinMammalofActn Jan 07 '24
I think most people play with party member visual effects turned to limited or turned off completely. At least I do, anyway. There's too much visual clutter otherwise.
4
u/AzraelTheMage Jan 08 '24
I remember when I first booted up the Playstation version after being on PC for a while. Didn't have party effects turned to limited while doing the Crystal Tower raids. Felt like I was gonna have a seizure with the amount of effects going off at the same time.
7
u/Azraeleon Jan 07 '24
Like 2 days into playing the game I turned party member effects to limited. Almost anyone who is trying to raid will do this. You don't have to play with shit.
4
u/FlashyDiagram85 Jan 07 '24
Most sane people turn off the more vibrant effects made from other players so you won’t actually see other people’s effects if they play this job.
0
u/endar88 Jan 08 '24
then there are the SMN's. still haven't figured out a way to make them completely disappear....and i'm a SMN, lol. just becomes too much in raids with 3 other SMN, hard to see mechanics sometimes.
2
u/blue-eyed-bear Jan 08 '24
Just use the size command..?
0
u/endar88 Jan 08 '24
right, i know that for myself. but talking about the size of all the others in the raid.
7
u/blue-eyed-bear Jan 08 '24
The size command changes them for all on your screen. I’m not sure I’m understanding what problem you’re describing?
1
u/Stormflier Jan 07 '24
FF14 sure does love to shove various shit on the screen namely various bars that charge up. So a lot of people definitely play with the visual effects off setting.
18
3
u/ckal09 Jan 07 '24
This looks like it’s just a mage with the magic replaced with magic brush strokes
7
u/BKWhitty Jan 07 '24
Silly is perfectly fine. If we can get this, I certainly hope we can get a Blitzball job based on Wakka in the future too
21
u/SirePuns Jan 07 '24
We went from the edgiest job to the most colorful job.
Truly, perfectly balanced.

I mean it’s not that different to Relm in FFVI
69
u/DaDoviende Jan 07 '24
You could say it's A Relm Reborn
33
u/Stormflier Jan 07 '24
That is 1000% gonna be the quest name to unlock the job
7
u/Kumomeme Jan 08 '24
or achievement / Fate name
3
u/Gogo726 Jan 08 '24
I'm going to be very disappointed if this isn't the name of one of the quests or achievements for the job.
2
2
78
u/cesil99 Jan 07 '24
It’s incredibly inspired by Relm, even up to the armor set. After so many casting jobs using elemental magic, I’m happy they went this route.
22
u/redpandasays Jan 07 '24
It’s only the armor that’s like Relm. Relm’s unique mechanic copied an enemy and its attack using the enemy’s stats. XIV’s Pictomancer exclusively deals magic damage and supports the party with buffs. It’s more like Bravely Default II’s Pictomancer, which does magic damage and supports the party with debuffs.
→ More replies21
u/KenethSargatanas Jan 07 '24
The Bravely series has always been "Not Final Fantasy (but really Final Fantasy, shh don't tell /wink /nudge.)" So, having BD2 as the inspiration for PCT's moveset isn't that unreasonable.
→ More replies9
u/redpandasays Jan 07 '24
Yeah lol. It’s actually a direct continuation of FF the 4 Heroes of Light, iirc. Or at least related to it developmentally. I forget the details.
I actually think there’s some idea exchange that happens between the XIV devs and Bravely devs, maybe some are friends and spitballing ideas back and forth, or something idk. Both Bravely Second and Heavensward released Astrologian within like 2 or 3 months of each other, and Arcanist made a comeback from FFTA with A Realm Reborn less than a year after the original BD was released with it in the roster. With how long the games are being developed the odds of sheer coincidence feel slim.

Yeah lol. It’s actually a direct continuation of FF the 4 Heroes of Light, iirc. Or at least related to it developmentally. I forget the details.
Which in turn picked up where FFV left off after FFVI onward abandoned the Warriors of Light concept for the mainline franchise, at least for a long while.
5
11
u/Newphonespeedrunner Jan 07 '24
they litterally talk about ff6 when revealing the job, relm is the obvious inspiration for pictomancer lol
2
u/Gogo726 Jan 08 '24
In the GBA version, the characters all have job names. Relm was a pictomancer.
→ More replies12
u/Swert0 Jan 07 '24
It's very different from Relm in the sense that it isn't a blue mage, it has a set roster of skills it uses.
FFXIV already has a BLU and will soon have BST as a second Blue Mage. Pictomancer is Square's chance at giving one of the forms of BLU for queued content by removing the aspect of it that made it BLU in the first place, I guess.
Very interested in seeing how it plays.

I've been wanting Geomancer or Beast Master. I wonder if this is supposed to be a successor to Geo.
41
u/cesil99 Jan 07 '24
Beastmaster was announced as a limited job releasing later in the expansion’s cycle.
23
u/Astrum22 Jan 07 '24 edited Jan 07 '24
Beastmaster is coming, but it's going to be a limited job like Blue Mage (and won't come till the later 7.x patches)

I hate that baseless argument. It is not Conjurer. They just used assets that already existed because why would they waste the resources and budget on a job not even fully released yet. It was for small section of a job quest line. If Geomancer were fully fleshed out, you wouldn’t need to worry about ir p being like Conjurer. Even if it were, Conjurer is a healer that doesn’t evolve past level 30.
1
u/scorchdragon Jan 08 '24
Not it's not, and no it is also not "we can't have Geomancer because the Astro questline said they were reverse Astro".
8
u/jcready92 Jan 07 '24
So it's black mage with paint?
5
u/Eaglesun Jan 08 '24
Maybe? in the original game Pictomancer works by controlling enemies during their turns and forcing them to use specific moves. I don't think this is truly a pictomancer class so much as an art-mage
→ More replies2
u/Zefyris Jan 08 '24
according to Yoshi-p, contrary to BLM it has support abilities; but contrary to Red Mage and Summoner, it has no rez in that support part of its kit.
37
u/ownager324 Jan 07 '24
Think it’s a pretty neat addition to the classes available, been wanting something cute to balance out all the edge that came with Shb and Ew
→ More replies-2
u/ConduckKing Jan 07 '24
Edge? ShB? Gunbreaker isn't THAT edgy and Dancer isn't edgy in the slightest.
16
u/ownager324 Jan 07 '24
Never said anything about jobs alone, was referring to the past two expansions as whole what with all the doom and gloom
10
u/ConduckKing Jan 07 '24
Ok, I see your point then. Dawntrail does look like it'll be a bit lighter hearted in general.
2
u/ownager324 Jan 07 '24
I think I need something more refreshing considering how emotionally exhausted I was by the end of EW.
5
u/Griffje91 Jan 07 '24
Feel that. It's why I started playing bard finally. Just an adventurer bro doing adventurer things while playing guitarbow
2
u/ConduckKing Jan 07 '24
Writers: We made a new lighthearted adventure for the 6.x patches!
Yoshi P: New lighthearted adventure or world-ending threat again?
Writers: sighs World-ending threat again.

And I specifically only mentioned ShB in my reply.
2
u/Zefyris Jan 08 '24
I mean to the first poster's defence, they didn't say the edginess in SHB was coming from the JOB THEMSELVES.

I might be biased since ff6 is my favorite game of all time, but as someone who has never played ff14 before, this looks like the coolest thing ever. Which makes me wonder why I'm not seeing much excitement in this comment section lmao
17
u/L1LE1 Jan 08 '24
Those in the main FF reddit page tend to ignore the MMO's existence, which is a crying shame considering how much aspects of the past FF entries has been implemented rather naturally to the magic system.
14
u/Gregarious_Jamie Jan 08 '24
People here tend to have the mentality of "I don't have that much time to spend in an MMO" despite playing the rest of the series for hundreds of hours
Anyway, free trial up to level 70 and including two expansions with no playtime restrictions, consider it!
1
u/jurassicbond Jan 08 '24 edited Jan 08 '24
People here tend to have the mentality of "I don't have that much time to spend in an MMO" despite playing the rest of the series for hundreds of hours
If you took the combined time of my first playthrough in all the mainline non-MMO Final Fantasies and compared it to my playtime in FFXIV when I finally caught up with the main story (in Endwalker), I think XIV may legitimately come out on top. It's definitely much more of a time sink than the rest of the series.

u/Gladiolus_00 Jan 08 '24 edited Jan 08 '24
Because any new thing they add to FFXIV needs to fulfill an edginess quota or else the fan base will start frothing at the mouth and having spontaneous brain combustions
(And I start getting downvoted, just take a look at the other comments, you'll see what I mean)
8
u/avelineaurora Jan 08 '24
You're downvoted because it's a dumb comment. Literally no one cares if XIV is "edgy" or not.
0
u/Gladiolus_00 Jan 08 '24
Agree to disagree. All I'm seeing is a bunch of people getting worked up over bright colours
3
u/avelineaurora Jan 08 '24
Yeah you're right, the further down thread I went the angrier people got. Yeesh.

u/False-Bluebird-3538 Jan 07 '24

Seems interesting of course what makes a job fun for me is how you play it so I’ll have to see when the expansion releases to see how it plays
3
u/Stompin89 Jan 07 '24
How cool would it have been if after the attack it changed the colour of the enemy
3
5
u/Emrys_Merlin Jan 07 '24
At first I was thinking they were copying Hwei from League, then I remembered that FFVI is literally turning 30 this year. Lol.
2
u/ForteEXE Jan 08 '24
Correct. It's the other way around, you could make jokes off Hwei being a Relm copycat.
10
u/Hitman3256 Jan 07 '24
Those effects are super jarring
→ More replies28
u/Griffje91 Jan 07 '24
I'm pretty sure there supposed to be. The job isn't magically conjuring ice and stone they're painting it and the paint is coming to life so the effects should look a bit more stylized and animated and colorful. To me that's what makes it good.
11
Jan 07 '24
I agree, it should look out of place. I had wished it was more akin to okami and those old school Asian brush strokes you see in games and anime but this is cute, it'll definitely grow on me
3
u/Griffje91 Jan 07 '24
Mhmm I'm already really excited for it. After maining dark knight and reaper for most of the game I switched to warrior and bard for fun shenanigans instead of edge so I'm really excited for this.
2
2
u/jkmef Jan 08 '24
If they put a "Pictomancer brushes away!" around 00:15 and an Amiibo announcement at the end, they could've fooled me into thinking it was a Smash trailer.

2
u/ParagonFury Jan 08 '24
My only problem is the saturation/brightness. It looks like they just straight dropped Spaltoon ink into the game and it clashes really hard with the game's aesthetic.

I never understand critiques like this, they are in the same vein as people that complain about futuristic elements in FF games over medieval themes, especially when the former is literally what has been at the roots for nearly every FF title. There is no such thing as being "out of place" in FF games.
9
u/Stormflier Jan 07 '24
Yeah I saw people on the FF14 sub already complaining about the futuristic city and how its not "medieval fantasy anymore" and uhh.. when was Final Fantasy including FF14 EVER medieval fantasy? There's always some sort of mech somewhere, FF4 has you go in a spaceship and go to the moon to fight aliens and meet moon people!

Gotta have silly lighthearted jobs to balance out the "People only like me because I'm disturbingly good at genocide and my tortured inner child is sad about it" or "I must maintain control or the voidsent I've enslaved will shred my soul and consume it so it can turn this world into a bloody hellscape" jobs.

Youre off your rocker. Moggle mogs effects looked magical and we're in the games style. The effects for this class, esp in the cinematic trailer, look like someone opened up Photoshop/Illustrator and just went to town paining over a video with effect that are honestly too bright
It looks like Splatoon when the rest of the game doesnt

u/Echidna_Kind Jan 08 '24
YES YES YES ANOTHER homogenized job where, if you replace the visuals with any job of its role, NOTHING would change.
I am so damn excited to get my hopes up that it will play differently, but I’m reality it actually doesn’t. YES
→ More replies5
u/Writer_Man Jan 08 '24
The only way you can consider casters homogenized is if you consider "doing attacks cause damage" as homogenized. Casters literally play the most different from each other than any other role with Ranged DPS coming in second.

u/ZetaLordVader Jan 07 '24
Well, we can thank the playerbase for that. People always complain about rotations and how hard they are, people cry nonstop if they have to press 4 buttons, so the devs just make easy to play stuff nowadays.
Im actually surprised we getting a new field operation, of how many people say Eureka and Bozja are “hard”.
→ More replies5
u/HanshinFan Jan 07 '24
This might be valid for any other role, but XIV's casters all play pretty uniquely from one another and have very different rotations and tools to manage movement mechanics, plus different party support options.
2
u/Stormflier Jan 07 '24
I got so salty when Astrologian was overly simplified. Same with when Scholar's second fairy was scrapped.
→ More replies0
u/Legitimate_Crew5463 Jan 07 '24
Unfortunately and I blame the devs too for this people just didn't understand how to play the older rotations for the jobs when they felt more unique. DRK, AST, SMN, and a few other jobs lost so much of their core identity over the years so bad players could play.

u/Satarielle Jan 07 '24
Probably unpopular opinion but this type of magic and the animation both do not fit into FFXIV. It would have been better to make it something like creation magic but paint? really?
-11
u/MutekiGamer Jan 07 '24
Wow they are adding lost ark’s artist to ff14
5
u/Zefyris Jan 08 '24
When the pictomancer's gear in the trailer is literally FF6's Relm outfit that is like 20+ years older than lost ark, that's a bold claim.

u/Jubez187 Jan 07 '24
Is this a limited job? I know there’s supposed to be a new limited job. Not that it shouldn’t be a normal job, I think it’s better than Viper. Has Relm from FFVI vibes and the name is more fitting to what it is.
2
u/JumpingComet Jan 07 '24
Beastmaster will be the limited job. Soon Blu and BeM will rule the Fates together.
2
u/Jubez187 Jan 07 '24
Oh okay I never saw the beastmaster announcement
1
u/VagueSoul Jan 07 '24
They only announced the name. It will come out in 7.5ish so it’s still being worked on. They don’t even have art yet.

If I wanted a discount Sai I'd play Naruto Generation Storm Ultimate Rasengan Chidori edition or whatever the hell it's called lol (I'm kidding, relax)
I don't know man, maybe I'm outgrowing the game or whatever, but this expansion isn't really making me hype like the others did. *shrug* hope it turns out fun for everyone else though.
10
u/Astrum22 Jan 07 '24
I don't think you're outgrowing the game, if I were to guess it's because the last expac (along with the post patches) were the culmination and climax of everything that came before it, and wrapped up every story line that came before it (including some stuff in the 13th we didn't even really know was happening).
Now, we're embarking on a new journey that's meant to be for the sake of adventuring, with very low stakes, and it's shaping up to be a fun and lighthearted story that, at first glance, doesn't seem as though it could kick off a 10-year long story that could possibly be as good as what preceded it. So whether or not this starts off our next world-saving adventure or is just a break in between big events, I don't think it's something that could compare just by seeing previews.
-6
u/Eskuire Jan 07 '24
Story was never really a big selling point for me in MMOs. I play them because I like the idea of group activities in them as a whole and getting to meet new people/raiding. Ive been playing since 2.1 when it first released on PS4. I think its just 11 years of the same content cycling honestly. Fire's been kinda dwindling once EW hit the midpoint. The story in this game was just an added note to me. So it wouldnt bother me if it was some beach adventure if EW and DT were swapped in order of release if you know what I mean, cause my main enjoyment doesnt come from a narrative perspective

9
u/EpsilonTheAdvent Jan 07 '24
This person has never played any older FF titles
-4
u/rissira Jan 08 '24
Oh I have. . There was only one just one. the only pictomancer that there was, was in ff6 and that character was barely even memorable. I can't even remember using that character because that's how forgettable they were. . So don't go saying I haven't played cause chances are you don't even remember either and had to Google it too. .
3
u/Zefyris Jan 08 '24
that 's not what they meant. There has almost always been goofy/fairytale-esque jobs/characters/abilities walking alongside the serious/edgy ones. It's pretty much a trademark of FF at this point.
So you've got your answer : how did we get from dark knight to pictomancer? By being a Final Fantasy game through and through.

The Beam is nice, otherwise its BLM with a different color scheme. Cool I guess
3
u/Zefyris Jan 08 '24
i doubt it's BLM, theyre showing just the basic abilities. It seems that it has at least 4 base color of paint, each of them linked to emulating an element when used alone. The whole shitck of that class if probably going to be combining those to form multi coloured paining moves. that painted scenery for example, it starts with white and then the brush goes blue.
