Hell, I played a fair amount of D2 at launch and was thinking of getting back into it recently, at this point I have no goddamned idea what I have to buy or what content is relevant for catching up (both in terms of plot and light level)

Can't imagine you guys see many completely brand new players if even someone who's trying to return is having this much trouble

Expansions are what to go for.

Pick up the ones you don’t have to catch up on the story. You don’t really need anything except maybe the most recent one for power level.

Now, what you need to know for purchasing: Do not buy silver bundles!

These are sold separately and in bundles, so make sure you do not buy anything twice!

Forsaken is just access to 20 exotic weapons, the Last Wish raid, and Shattered Throne dungeon. You aren’t going to be replaying those at this point, so you’d be paying for the exotics and raid weapons (recently updated and made craftable).

30th Anniversary os Grasp of Avarice dungeon, Gjallarhorn, and some weapons/armor.

Then you have the expansions: Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, Witch Queen, and Lightfall (in order). Each one gives you story, access to exotics and weapons tied to them.

There are sales going on right now, and on Steam you can get all of that for ~$75 on steam. With over half of that being Lightfall and its annual pass (what’s on sale, includes the dungeon pass).

There’s probably another dungeon pass, but that would be an in game purchase with silver (can’t check at the moment).
