Is there a company/service that buys high-end (and heavy) furniture on short-notice?
I'm going to need to move on short notice at some point because the place I live in is being sold.
We have an extremely heavy/long dining room table that won't fit into my new place, as we're planning on downsizing. Since I don't have time to list it on FB marketplace/craigslist, I am wondering what are the options in this situation?
As it's a valuable piece of furniture, are there furniture re-sellers anyone knows in the City that do this sort of thing and ideally can pick it up? What do you do in this situation.
Thanks for any insights.

What is a place to relax with small group of friends at night?
My friend is visiting the city and we are planning to meet somewhere tonight around 8pm with a group of 7 people. Some people will want to have dinner, some drinks and couple others don’t drink so maybe a tea or other type of beverage. Thinking a chill laidback friend hangout vibe, something cozy. Is there a space that matches this description? Not really sure where to take people, but I’m thinking a restaurant or cafe type space? Maybe another fun event to take people to? Please help!

How can I avoid moving into an apartment with mice/rats?
This question is stemming from an extreme phobia of mice/rats that started after dealing with them in my bed as a kid 🥲
Anyway, I’ve been in the city for 7 years and this is the first time I’ve been able to afford to live alone (woo!) so I’m looking at places. I’ve lived in 4 different apartments in the city, one of which hadd a mice problem that literally triggered a mental breakdown and I had to break the lease to move out.
I’m obviously working on the phobia itself, but I also would like to avoid picking a place with a rodent issue or that is ripe for rodent issues. My budget is on the lower end for a studio (~2100), so I’m trying to do a good job of vetting landlords to make sure they’re good with prevention (like actual maintenance in between tenants), but I’m curious if there’s other things I should consider? Like neighborhood, type of building, etc?
I’d appreciate your help in keeping me sane 😪

Moving to SF from another country!
So as the title say, I will be moving to San Francisco at the en of January, I haven’t been in the states for the last 20 years( I’m 23) so basically no experience, no high school(currently studying for GED), no friends, no nothing, so fellow Redditors: 1. What could be my job opportunities? Any insights of the job market you want to share? 2. I will live in SOMA, what could I expect? And anything fun to do around? 3. What should I know about moving inside the city? Any non written rules I should know? I would really appreciate your insights, I’m very nervous but excited! For context, I’ve been living in Guatemala for the last 20 years, I’m a US citizen. I’ll be staying with a family member and have around 3 months worth o savings for my personal expenses, so ideally I would need a source of income before running out of money.

Activities for animal loves in SF ?
Hi! I’m trying to find something to do for my 24rd bday that involves animals. I would love to go to some type of sanctuary or rescue with uncommon animals that’s hands on or something along those lines. (Not just like a typical zoo) It doesn’t have to be right in SF, it can be in surrounding areas. Thanks 😊

No working heat. Worth going to SFTU to talk to counselor?
Hi SF folks
I moved into a rent controlled 1 bedroom apartment August 2024. There appeared to be a gas radiator in the bedroom - come to find out, it is broken.
Dec 10, I submitted a request to have it fixed. Maintenance guy came out, said he needed a part he didn’t have, and has never returned.
Dec 19, I followed up to my property management office via email. I also included a link to the ordinance that SF requires a heat source in EVERY livable room, meaning my living room should have a heater (it doesn’t).
After about a week, I get a reply saying I can get a space heater. I ask, are they providing that? Also when is my gas radiator being fixed?
More days go by, they say to send space heater options to them. Doesn’t even acknowledge my radiator getting repaired.
Long story short, I ended up reporting them to DBI.
But I am curious, do you think it’s worth going to the SFTU to ask about a rent reduction or anything of the sort? Is there anything else I should be doing in terms of reporting my building?
Thanks for any help you may have!
Editing to add: this is Beam Properties. Does anyone have any experiences with them? I’ve had multiple other issues with them as well.

high school enrollment advice
Hi there, I currently have some cousins who recently moved to America from the Philippines. The high school district they fall under is SFUSD- I saw that Lincoln, Washington, Galileo, and Balboa have good reputations from what I've seen so far. I was wondering if anyone who's been to these schools or have had their kids enrolled at this school can offer some insight? Such as how the environment would be for kids who are adjusting to a mostly english speaking environment? Or how their personal experiences with staff were, anything you believe we should know or know that we can't find out otherwise through asking the school? It would be much appreciated, thanks a lot!

Random visitor
This just happened, around 1:15pm. Our doorbell rang several times (typically it’s packages) — but today it was a smallish 40 or 50 something year old white man in a red coat with a plate full of food and he asked two questions (we spoke through the door):
- Are there any vacant apartments here?
- Do you live here?
I said:
No one is expecting any visitors, you need to leave.
…
I watched him walked down the block, not stopping at any other houses.
…
Why was our apartment targeted? What does this mean?
We just moved to the area and I take care of my two young children, who were wrapping up lunch.
Thanks for your help and insight.

Decent luggage repair spot?
Have a bag I need to replace all four wheel sets on. Took it to Frank’s on Polk and he quoted $80 for each wheel - whooping $320 for the total replacement. Any reasonably priced spots I can take it to? Not sure if it helps at all but it is a Tumi bag.
Thanks in advance!

Recommendations about Lower Nob Hill, Union Square area living
My 25yo daughter is relocating this month from Ashland OR to a studio apartment for a new job. Specifically either 821 Leavenworth or 626 Bush Street. Any things to be concerned about or suggestions for local socializing? I know the City only from touristy stuff and concerts. She is a confident young woman with a lot of life experience already and this will be her first time living in a big city.
For example, the Leavenworth location is near Saint Francis Hospital, so it could be noisy from the 24hr emergency room? And the Bush location is apparently just within the perimeter of Union Square neighborhood security patrol, so that is both good and concerning? Reddit search is recommending living north of California Street but that appears to be beyond her budget. Also get a noise machine and watch out for the occasional junkie escaping from the hospital and shooting up.
Thanks in advance for any feedback! She is really looking forward to this new phase, while working both full-time, some part-time and online degree. Daily commute to Ocean and Alemany Blvd.
