Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

Looking for big thick porterhouse or ribeye, something like they have at the Texas Roadhouse but at a fancy joint.

is it worth it to go alone as a shy-ish person who likes to dance? I'm coincidentally sleeping all day today so I can really get there whenever I want. what's the inside scoop? the people I know who are going are burners who end up hanging out with their fellow burner friends, which is cool/fine except I am not a part of any of those communities which is why I'd be bopping around solo.

Judgment free apartment cleaners

I live in the Mission in a 1/1 with 2 cats. It isn’t particularly dirty or messy, but keeping things consistently clean is more than I can keep up with. If you have recommendations for someone who helps organize, that would be great too. The more hands on, the better, as I really struggle with executive function.

I really struggle with letting people into my space, hence the desire for a person/people who aren’t judgy. I don’t want to make someone uncomfortable with cannabis paraphernalia or risqué artwork, or feel bad in my own home.

Thank you

Bramble cocktail in SF

Does anyone know of a bar in SF that makes a bramble? I had one in Scotland and loved it.

Every time I ask a bartender to make me this that say no and I embarrass myself so it would be nice to know if they do beforehand.

An evening plan for New Year Eve?

It's like last minute but we are thinking of going up to SF for the New Year Eve. Say we get there around 7, have dim sum near China Town, how do we kill time from dinner until the count down at mid night?

Also, is it better to drive or Bart + Waymo? We are in Fremont. Thanks

West African grocers?

I know I can go to Oakland for African food shopping, but is there anywhere on this side of the Bay Bridge to find African spices and cooking staples? Bonus points if they also have readymades, but let’s not get greedy here.

Thanks!

Memory Care

Happy New Year (we hope)!

We’ve got tours and appointments with five different memory care providers but wondering if anyone has direct experience with any local spots. My family member has a diagnosis of dementia and needs care. Thank you!

Thinking about taking my daughter and nephew to California Academy of Science on New Year’s Day before I have to go back to work.

Has anyone ever been on New Years Day and was it extremely busy? Thanks!

Anyone know a Latin dance (salsa and bachata) teacher in the Bay Area that does individual instruction? (I’m a guy btw)

Title.

I’ve been to the dance nights where they teach you the basic for half an hour, then you rotate partners, with men usually outnumbering women 2 to 1 so having to “air dance” the moves every other time the partners change.

I’ve seen some places like Pick school of dance but am not sure if they require partners to sign up or if the same “odd man out” thing with more men than women will be the case there.

Where to buy lumber?

Hi, I was looking for places to buy wood/lumber to make simple shelves. I thought about Home Depot, but I do not have a truck.

Is Discount Builders & Supply on South Van Ness Ave. decent with prices or Aces Hardware? Or uh Lowes? These are places I live much closer to, but wanted to know which one was relarively cheaper.

Is Lou's Fish Shack (or "Lou's Blues") still open?

A taxi driver strongly suggested it for tonight, but google maps marks it as temporarily closed. Any other suggestions otherwise? Live music, people, not too far from the Piers. Thanks a lot

Gym recommendations (yes, at the most cliche time of year possible)

I'm thinking of joining a new gym. So I'd be one of those annoying new year's people lol. Even a pricey gym could actually save money, and definitely save time, compared to my current workout habits spread across multiple small studios. My interests are lifting weights, group classes (especially yoga), and cardio, in that order.

I'm most drawn to Equinox for a couple of reasons: their group classes seem good, their locations are convenient for me, and I like the idea of a national chain where I could visit other locations when traveling. I'm not married to the idea though and am open to other gym recommendations if there's a downtown location, ideally near Montogomery or Powell BART.

If you're currently an Equinox member, or you go somewhere else and love it, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Specifically I'm curious about:

  • Sports Club: worth the extra cost? I'm going to visit here to look around anyway. I'd probably mostly go here, Pine St, and Van Mission.
  • If you're a woman who enjoys lifting, how's the vibe where you go? Do you find the equipment suitable and do you run into a lot of bro-ey behavior?
  • If you take (especially hot) yoga classes at your gym, do they scratch that itch for you or do you still also go to a yoga studio?

Who else buys the Annual Pass to CinemaSF?

It's an annual pass for free admission to all movies at The Balboa, The 4Star and The Vogue

If you're also a card carrying member - wanna make meet-up club?

I just got my pass in the mail for 2025 and it would be fun to know what other members are wanting to see each month. I loved having a pass this year, but I know I would be more motivated to go to more of a variety of their showings if i knew another movie-lover was going too!

Anywhere to soak in hot water this weekend?

Bonus points if it’s women-only!

Kabuki is booked up and my friends in desperate need to decompress. Pearl also seems booked up. Cavallo point is out of price range. Banya is way too intense.

Figure me I’d ask in case there are any creative ideas people know of (like an Airbnb with hot tub or something!)

Within an hours drive works too.

Thanks! :)

EDIT: thanks everyone!!! Resortpass is awesome and booked through that!

Restaurants & bar recommendations + Sonoma day trip feasibility?

Hello!

I’ll be in SF with my husband for about 4 days 30F, 32M) and we would love some recommendations for restaurants and bars - bonus if they have a city view / rooftop.

I’d also love some thoughts on us doing a day trip to Sonoma - what are your recommendations to go for lunch + wine tasting? Since this is my birthday trip I’d love to go somewhere where the views are lovely and we can have memorable photos of the trip.

Pretty much any recommendations to make our trip memorable including sight seeing or experiences!

Thank you so much in advance

Moving to inner sunset from Utah and I’ll have my car with me for a couple days. Is there street parking or do you need a permit? Or are there garages nearby that allow overnight parking?

SFERS retirement question

For City & County of SF employees who have a defined benefit pension, is the total "pensionable" compensation limited by PEPRA? Or is the pension based on your total salary regardless of PEPRA limits, which would be different from most other CA public employers.

Asking about employees who are new hires, e.g., hired this year, not classic members who have worked for the City pre-2013. I've read through the SFERS website but cannot find confirmation one way or the other. Thanks for any experience with this.
