Worst repairman experience ever through this sub. Be careful with this guy

I wanna start by saying I understand its a risk to try and do mail-in repair with a stranger on reddit so I shouldn't be too shocked. But this is the most unprofessional and just overall awful experience I've ever had with an online seller and hes very active in this sub so I want to warn people. He WILLINGLY responded to my post offering me his repair services when I said I needed 7(?) psp's fixed. These are fixes that even I could finish all in one day as an amateur (screens, buttons). He confirmed he got my consoles, sat on them for TWO MONTHS (!!!!) and blamed a bunch of life problems. I was EXTREMELY patient and understanding regardless. After 2.5 months, I told him to just send me my shit back. He once again just held it for another 1.5 months now without sending it back, and EXPECTS ME TO PAY SHIPPING, with no other explanation other than he's "busy". The only reason I don't believe this guy is just a full on scammer is because its clear from his page and photos that he sent me that he does indeed do repair. I wouldn't be surprised if he lost my shit and just is scared to tell me or something. But either way its horrifically unprofessional and I'm out 7 consoles. PLEASE BE CAREFUL.

Is my ol' NES Toast?

Hey all!

So, lemme give you the quick rundown:

My Dad had an NES from when he was in College and gave it to me about 10 years ago. I cherished it and protected it with my life, and as time went on, it got harder and harder to read games. Sometimes it would take 4 tries, other times 20. A few months ago I opened the old thing, gave it a good dusting, cleaning with isopropyl and a toothbrush, and boiled the 72-pin connector. After that, it seemed to work first try, every time!

Jump to now.

I just got Mickey Mousecapade, and was super stoked to try it. I put in the game; flashing red light. I tried again; same thing. After 10 tries of nothing, I thought maybe the game was toast, But then I tried the rest of my games (Rad Racer, Blades of Steel, Mario/Duck Hunt, etc.) and couldn't get a single game to load.

When I look up how to make an NES work better, the best answer is boiling the connector, so I'm unsure what to do now. Do I need to get a new motherboard, or what?

Technical details:

These are the symptoms I get:

-Most often, turning the NES on results in the flashing red light.

-Other times, the red light will be solid, but I will just have a black screen.

-VERY OCCASIONALLY will a game actually play as usual (Mario/Duck Hunt seems to have the best luck)

Recent fixes I have attempted:

-boiling pin connector (roughly 4 months ago)

-Cleaning motherboard with isopropyl

-Using mild metal polish on motherboard connector for 72-pin connection (seemed to be a bit of oxidation on it, so I thought I'd give the polish a try)

Is my NES done for? Help!!!!!!!

Dreamcast problems - picture and disc drive?

I also posted here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/dreamcast/comments/1hzxaf5/is_my_unit_a_dud/

My Dreamcast seems to have some quite mild, but annoying issues.

The picture doesn't seem overly clear no matter what cable I use (including an hdmi adapter), the picture seems slightly dark and there are very faint horizontal lines moving up and down the screen. I also notice something in crazy taxi. Backgrounds occasionally aren't loading in to keep up with the speed of the taxi, leading to some awful pop up that I know didn't used to be there.

Any thoughts? Do I need to just replace the console?

Tia.

I can easily desolder and replace the power regulator but I’m afraid too much damage may be done already.

Broken HDMI port on PS5

I would assume the solider pads are damaged as well as probably missing capacitor(s)? I am not too sure but I have attached photos. I was planning on selling the device and was hoping to get advice from people more proficient in this before making any final decisions. I miss my console :(

Where to purchase NES & SNES power supply cords?

Lately I've been buying broken consoles to refurbish and sell. It's been going good so far, but I'm having trouble sourcing OEM (or just good quality) power supplies for the NES and SNES. I had been purchasing off-brand ones from AliExpress and they've seemed to work fine, but I'd rather find some original ones to be safe. I've found Japanese sellers on eBay selling used OEM N64 power supplies for around $6, so I've been buying those. But I can't seem to find NES or SNES cables under $15. Does anyone know of any sellers or have any suggestions?

PlayStation 1 Controller detection issues

My roommate and I have been trying to set up his childhood PS1 and have run into an issue that has us stumped. I'll try to give as much detail as possible.

The issue is that the console doesn't detect button inputs, and troubleshooting the problem has left us stumped. We've used two different controllers, both first generation without analog sticks, both functional as far as we know, neither makes any difference. We have also tried several different games, and this is where it gets extra confusing. 90% of the games tried booted up without issue, but accept no inputs at all, or give an error message that no controller is detected. One game specifically (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) accepts a single button input to get past the start screen, then gives an error message that no controller is detected. Another game (Emperor's New Groove) accepts a button press to get past the start screen about 50% of the time before giving a no controller error message. One other game (Crash Bandicoot 2) works completely fine every time without issue, with either controller. This last bit has really confounded me.

I have tried leaving it unplugged and resetting it multiple times, I opened the console up, it was a little dusty but not exceptionally so or dirty. No obvious signs of corrosion. I cleaned up the controller and memory card ports with isopropyl and gave the inside a onceover. This did not help at all. All the same games behave in exactly the same way. Anyone have any ideas?

Xbox one x overheating

I have a Xbox one X that is overheating. I’ve cleaned and repasted the cpu and put in a different fan. The only thing I haven’t done is put new thermal pads on. But to me it doesn’t even sound like the fan is turning on. Any ideas?

My First Attempt at Fixing a Stripped Screw on a Nintendo Switch 🔧: What Do You Think?

Thumbnail youtu.be
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m new to the world of repairs, and this was my first attempt at soldering to remove a stripped screw on a Nintendo Switch. It was definitely a challenge, but after a lot of trial and error, I managed to get it done.

I documented the entire process in a video I uploaded to my YouTube channel.

I’d love to hear your feedback: What do you think of the method? Do you have any tips or advice for the future?

Thanks in advance! I’m excited to learn and improve with help from this amazing community :)

All of my ps4 controllers disconnected and now I can't reconnect them

PS4 video signal not stable

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hy everyone! I found this PS4 on the ground (lol), the video signal sometimes stays on for a long time, sometimes it goes by itself or when i move the cable - tap on the shell. The hdmi port looks a bit widened, bending it back should fix the problem? Last pic is my PS4 pro which works perfectly fine.

PS5 turning on whenever plugged in

PS5 will turn on whenever it’s plugged in whether the HDMI is connected or not but then beeps twice (probably 4 seconds between each beep) and turns off. What could cause this problem? I tried looking it up but I’m not finding anything.

Any way to restore this small dent on my Android gaming device?

I recently purchased a handheld Android gaming device and a third-party 3D printed grip for it. It unfortunately lightly scratched and dented a portion of the device where the grip clips are present. The 3D grip apparently uses PLA plastic and the device’s plastic is ABS I believe. Is there any way I could “repair” or restore the small dented area? I was looking into touch-up pens but most are meant for automobiles and I don’t want to cause any further cosmetic damage. Here is an image link. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Weird graphical glitches when playing games on our SNES, what is the cause?

So we've recently dug out the old SNES to play some classics. But it seems there's an issue with our SNES. We've tried different upscalers etc, cables, different games and even a different TV. It all has the same following issue: apparent graphical glitches when playing the games. Since everything else is the same, I think it's our SNES. A lot of the screen displays correct but moving characters and some text, is garbled up.

Here's some examples: https://imgur.com/a/LxDODRs .

Does anyone know what the cause of this could be?

I've brought our SNES to a local repair guy and he had a "burn-in" cartridge or something to test the hardware of the machine and it all came back green/positive.

He opened our SNES up and says the chips & tracks on the motherboard all look OK but there's just some condensator/capacitor leakage. He sent us this photo: https://imgur.com/a/S9818o8 .

Can you guys see what he means? He told us he could change out the SMD caps hoping it would fix the issue but says it will be 50 euros alone for that.

Are we being ripped off? Is it true that he can fix it by changing those SMD caps? Do you guys know of anything else that could be the issue?
