You have to understand his genre. Singing about cartel violence because he's in one. He tried to distance himself but was in too deep and knew it. He thought one more for the angels.

They murdered him right after this.

He knew it was for real, took a moment and owned his last moments. Visceral as hell. Impressive as hell too. Most I think would break down, ghost in shock or tried to uselessly run. Respect, Mr Sanchez.

u/FILTHBOT4000 Nov 28 '24
Full video of that song. Pretty rare to see the conviction of a true musician in the face of certain murder.
44
u/ProjectManagerAMA Nov 29 '24
Man, this brought a lot of memories. I grew up going to these types of events in my youth.
My parents hated it because there would be guaranteed fights every time and on 1 of 5 occasions there would be a murder or someone getting hacked with a machete. I would normally go for the music and finding a girl to hook up with and leave early. Most of the insanity would happen around 2-4am when everyone was super hammered.
In my town, you could get killed over a bad look, now imagine everyone being crazy drunk. Even when going early, I would get threatened by people in there. I don't even know why I would keep going considering how friggin' dangerous it was. I suppose there was just about nothing to do in town so when these bands would come, you'd get all excited.

Visceral refers to the viscera, or our entrails. Visceral in this context means the type of notion that you can feel in the pit of your stomach.

u/PilgrimOz Nov 29 '24
Sorry just saw this. It’s “What does it mean if something is visceral? When something’s visceral, you feel it in your guts. A visceral feeling is intuitive — there might not be a rational explanation, but you feel that you know what’s going on”

... Story says it wasn't just a threat. He was informed that was going to be the last song he ever sang because he was going to be killed as soon as he got off stage.
The way you said it isn't untrue necessarily. But I think it's a key distinction. The fact that he wasn't threatened and thought "oh I better watch out or things might get rough" ... He was literally informed that they would be killing him after this performance.

Cartel, basically: "Enjoy your last song, you know you are an informer".
51
u/NeonPatrick Nov 28 '24
Was he an informant tho? I thought it was the content of his lyrics which waere negative to cartels.
73
u/Zykium Nov 28 '24
This is correct. He sung in a genre called narcocorrido, it's basically narrative songs of crimes that have been committed.
The note was a warning to stop singing and he went ahead and sang.
47
u/Comfortable-Cap-8507 Nov 28 '24
That’s all just speculative. Nobody knows what the note said or why they killed him exactly. He killed someone who raped his sister but that was a long time before this. He was from Sinaloa so probably involved a bit in the cartel when he was young and then started singing about it.
17
u/Watabeast07 Nov 28 '24
Yeah this whole story is speculation, all we know is he read this note which presumably was a threat by his reaction and he was found dead later that night. We don’t know whether it was his music or something else entirely which killed him.
7
u/pVom Nov 28 '24
He was heavily involved with criminals and the cartels his whole life. People smuggling, drug dealing, shot some people.
Who knows why exactly but I doubt it was because of his lyrics
→ More replies15
u/ModeatelyIndependant Nov 28 '24
Chalino Sánchez was one of the more famous narcocorridos, a style of music where song writers sing about crimes, murders, and etc. committed by cartel members. He likely knew his killers, and knew it wasn't a threat but a promise.
23
8
u/Henroide Nov 28 '24
more than a threat it was a death sentence, he had already been warned/threatened not to return to that city, supposedly

u/Legal_Mail_2652 Nov 28 '24
The note said don't sing your songs well kill you if you do, he sang them. When he left the club a black suv pulled him over and people in police uniforms took him. He was found in a field with 2 shots in the back of his head by farmers the next day or 2
5
u/NotMyRealNameObv Nov 28 '24
Damn, imagine being so scared you commit suicide by shooting yourself twice in the back of your head.
2
u/Draidann Nov 28 '24
Lol, no. Cartels don't do that shit. They kill you and make it very freaking clear it was them.
4
u/NotanAlt23 Nov 28 '24
The note said don't sing your songs well kill you if you do, he sang them
No one knows what that note says. it could just be a song request for all we know.
His daughter already said that the note was never read by anyone else but him.
167
u/thetdy Nov 28 '24
Cartel member hands him a note during the performance that he's going to die after he's done. He's murdered after he leaves.
56
u/seven0feleven Nov 28 '24
No one actually knows what the note said. The theory is the one you posted, and is generally accepted; but to be entirely accurate, no one knows what the note said. It could have been a song request and him getting murdered that night could be a tragic coincidence.

From Wikipedia:
After the January 1992 shooting and the increase in notoriety that followed, Sánchez began fearing for his life. He distributed his gun collection to his friends and sold the rights to his songs to Musart Records, receiving just enough money for his wife to buy a house but depriving his family of any future royalties.6])
On 16 May 1992, during a performance at the Salón Bugambilias in Culiacán, Sánchez was handed a note from someone in the crowd. The note is commonly believed to have been a death threat, but this has never been confirmed.21]) A video shows Sánchez reading the note, showing signs of worry, then crumpling up the note and continuing to sing.22])
After midnight, Sánchez left the club with two of his brothers, a cousin and several young women. Their vehicle was pulled over by a group of armed men in black Chevrolet Suburbans). They showed state police identification and told Sánchez that their commander wanted to see him. Sánchez agreed and got into one of their cars.6])
The following morning, two farmers found Sánchez' body by an irrigation canal near Mexican Federal Highway 15, near the neighborhood of Los Laureles, Culiacán. He was blindfolded, and his wrists bore rope marks. He had been shot twice in the back of the head.23]) Sánchez was buried in the Panteón de Los Vasitos in Sinaloa, Mexico.24])5])

He killed his sisters rapist, who happened to be a member of the mafia. They expelled him from the area with threats never to perform there or show his face.
Years later he returned to the region and started performing again. This is from one of those concerts after he came back. Supposedly the note either told him he was going to die or that unless he stops performing he will die. Fact is he was dead the next day. :/

Chalino sanchez, king of corridos, Mexican folk music. Chalino was very popular and favored by some gangs and not by others. Supposedly the message said if you perform tonight you die. He performed and he did indeed die later that night. He is hailed for his give no fucks attitude
51
u/Who-else-could-i-be Nov 28 '24
Apparently, when the cartel approach him after the concert, they ask him if anybody else was with him. He said no, even though his brother was him. That allowed for his brother to escaped and not be murdered that night.

The backstory so people know. Chalino Sanchez was handed a note that if he sang his most famous song (about a cartel murder I think) He would be killed. He reads the note and sings it anyway. He is killed shortly after. He sings knowing it is the last time he will sing.

u/PoopyPantsMcGee_ Nov 28 '24
The song is a love song. Chalino killed a cartel years prior who sexually assaulted his sister. They wanted revenge
