Discussion June 6th 2024 Diagnosed
48 yr old male, first diagnosed with LADA in June 2024 with an A1C of 12.76%. And 7 months later... Bam.. now 5.14%. just managed through change of diet, Lantus and Sitagliptin. Shots of NovaRapid here and there. No GCM, finger pricks 3 x a day. Painful but my insurance doesn't cover GCMs here.
Anything is possible gyals and guys... hang in there, we got this.
Dr. Took me off Lantus and I basically on inject NovaRapid based on a scale of units per my glucose readings. If I'm under 99 MG, no insulin if I'm 101 MG then it's 4 units of NovaRapid, and the number of units go up based on my scale.

Mental Health I Would Like to (Cosmically?) Apologize...
As a life-long fat fuck who in middle age progressed into a morbidly(ish?)-obese fat fuck, I feel really guilty when I think of people who have Type 1 diabetes... 'Cause like, I deserve to have diabetes, and T1D peeps by definition don't deserve diabetes... So it makes me sad. That's all, really.
I mean, I don't care too much for sweets, and before mental illness ratcheted up to Nightmare Difficulty and made exercise a thing of the past, leaving me a big blob of atrophied muscle and gelatinous adipose tissue lying on the floor all day waiting to die I at least made some effort, but at this point I feel like... I dunno, a errant monk of obesity, lapsed and eating a loaf of white bread and a bottle of white wine every day, self-flagellating but never attaining the insulin-resistance I deserve... Tried to off myself a couple of times a few years ago but got death-blocked by this pandemic thing that was going on...
So yeah, If you believe in god or other magic, feel free to beam diabetic karma toward me so I can get what I deserve, albeit of the type 2 variety...
Oh, and I officially donated my retirement investments to "Breakthrough T1D: Type 1 Diabetes", since there's no way I'll live long enough to actually withdraw the money... So yeah.

Low Carb Fast Food hacks?
I just saw that Taco Bell Chicken Nuggets (10 piece) is 20g carbs compared to 26 for 10 pieces at McDonalds. I may give them a try with 1-2 less units.
Of course 'protein style' (lettuce wrapped) burgers, especially at In n Out are my jam, as is the 'Flying Dutchman: bunless, two patties with grilled onions and cheese between them.
What are yours--say a meal under 30g, or what you think is worth it for the insulin.
I also notice that organic Italian flour in pasta and pizza has far less impact on my blood sugar than US grown commercial flour.

How many grams of fat in food before you bolus for it?
Hi all,
As the title says. I tend to start counting fat grams the same as carbohydrate grams once they are 10 or higher. So if I ate something with 40 grams of carbs, and 10 grams of fat, I would bolus for 50 on a dual-wave bolus (I'm on an insulin pump). My mum saw me do this earlier, and said that 10 grams of fat should just be ignored.
As far as I'm aware, fat both slows down the conversion of carbohydrates into glucose, and can cause temporary insulin resistance. Is this correct? Sometimes I feel like I don't understand the science of diabetes well enough.
Thanks :)

Meme & Humor Positives of Having T1D
I remember seeing a post recently asking what the benefits were for having T1D, but from a more serious tone. My tongue-in-cheek thought is that I’ve become reacquainted with my childhood favourite sour candies - stuff I’d previously given up for my health. Now I’ll dig into a bag of Sour Skittles or split some Sour Patch Kids with my son to correct a low. I want to get my hands on a blue raspberry Baby Bottle Pop next.

Seeking Support/Advice Nervous BS 354
Hi all— this isn’t my first rodeo but idk why I’m scared right now. I was 79 so I had 2 chips ahoy cookies and then seemingly shot up to 354 out of nowhere. I only noticed when I checked because I was feeling a bit nauseous. Please don’t judge me right now I’m currently drinking water and already have insulin in my system but it’s been 20 mins and not coming down. I just changed my pump even though I don’t think it was leaking but I’m just scared for some reason. I’ve experienced highs before but it’s an awful feeling and I just want to come down already it being steady is freaking me out and I dont know if I should dose more insulin with the new pump considering I just did on the old one. Advice words of kindness to ease my anxiety anything will help please I’m sorry

Nutrition & Diet Is it bad that I dont put in any insulin?
Alright, you can skip to end if you dont wanna read the story of how I found out I had diabetes.
I was a completely normal human who got called in for a blood test one day (for suspected anaemia) and got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes instead. After that they found GAD positive antibodies so I was put on insulin.
The thing is, I eat such a low carb diet that I literally don't need it? I went back home to Nepal for a holiday and I needed it there (abt 6 units AM and 7ish PM) since the dumplings and rice are pretty high carb, but in the UK I legit just eat salad and chicken, even biscuits but I dont get high sugar.
Am I lucky? Is this the honeymoon phase? Im 20 years old if that helps. I wish it would stay like this forever lol. Only problem is that someeetimes I get lows without putting in any insulin, no idea why. Might make a seperate post for that.
Thanks for reading!
Tldr - I eat such a minima carb diet to where I dont need to inject any insulin and if I do I will go low. Is this potentially dangerous?
edit - I have type 1 diabetes (LADA to be specific). I was misdiagnosed with type 2.

Discussion What’s the worst part of having T1D?
For me personally, it’s the constant misunderstanding EVERYBODY has about diabetes. Even my family who looked after me as a kid don’t seem to fully understand how it all works, and that’s after serving on the front lines of diabetes for 22 years!

T1D News Cell therapy first: transplanted islets working without immunosuppressives - Breakthrough T1D

Important milestone towards a functional cure
Sana released information on their first patient treated with gene-edited donor islet cells, that were transplanted without immunosuppression. It’s just one patient, and only at 4 weeks, but an allo transplant without immunosuppression should be acutely rejected, suggesting their approach could work. A long way to go to FDA approval and wide availability, but it’s another major milestone on the path to a functional cure. More data about the trial should be released in the coming weeks and months.

Discussion In the market for a new pump soon
I’m currently using the tandem t- slim, it has been the best pump I have used to date, but the time is rapidly approaching when I will be getting it replaced. I would like to keep as many of the t-slims features as possible, but I’m not married to being on a tandem pump. With that in mind, here are some of my requirements and nice to haves but not a deal breaker if it isn’t available.
Require: 1. Smaller capacity reservoir (300u/ml is just too much these days, this amount leads to site changes every 5 to 8 days instead of the recommended 3)
AID/Closed loop with Dexcom or freestyle support. Sorry Medtronic, I have been burned once too often with your cgm
Mobile interface
Web portal with the capability of giving limited access to my management team
Nice to have: 1. Tubeless, yes omnipod, you are back in the consideration mix
Simplified bolus options
Tighter range than 80 - 120 for the algorithm
Pathway to dual hormone, long shot right now but wouldn’t this be cool.
I’m sure that there are other considerations that I have left out, but any suggestions are appreciated.

Insulin-pen durability
Does anyone have experience with how long Humalog insulin pens last unrefrigerated and unopened?
I am a student and would like to store a backup insulin pen at the university in case I forget my active one at home. Unfortunately, I don't have the possibility to refrigerate it. there.

Discussion How often do your NFC insulin pens error when you try to scan them?
My doctor thinks my Novopen 6 and Novopen Echo Plus might be faulty?
I got them last year and 90% of the time when I try to scan them they don't work, it just says "scan error". It's so bad I have mostly given up using the feature until it's nearing my appointment and then I madly scan them over and over and over until they finally transfer the data. Unfortunately this time I wasn't able to get them to work so my doctor had no insulin data to look at and when I explained why, my doctor said that it wasn't normal?
I guess this might sound actually insane but I kind of just thought sometimes new technology has a lot of faults and that this was part of the package deal of having these pens with this exciting new feature.
If you have a similar pen that connects to your phone, how often does it actually work?

Supplies Ditching G7, going back to the G6
I have been having seemingly constant issues since I started with the G7 a few months ago. Several sensors that wont pair (I assume because the on-board battery died), and recently most of the sensors will connect with my phone, but not my pump. Not really a 'closed loop' system if my pump cannot auto correct for high/lows.
Called today to have the switch made back to the G6, which I firmly believe is better. Maybe the G7 will be better with time.

Supplies Lantus pen not working
My Lantus pen has stopped working. Feels like something is messed up inside. It lets me dial back any dose but when I press down, it’s all resistance and I can’t inject. I’ve changed needles. I’ve tried different amounts. All I can do is twist the dial up and down.
Has anyone experienced this? Any way to fix it? For now, I’m just using a syringe to draw it out as there’s almost 200 units left in there and I don’t want to waste it.

Discussion To my Tslim peeps
Hey yall recently I’ve been having a lot of leakage issues at my infusion sites. Up until now I’ve been using the auto soft xc which goes in at a 90 degree angle. They have sent me a box of auto soft 30. Has anyone else made this switch and if so were the 30s uncomfortable for you once you put them in? I just feel like I can feel it constantly and this is the 3rd one I’ve tried… help?

Mental Health tw: ed & t-1 d
i’m a newly diagnosed t1 (2.5 months) and having a lot of issues with having to focus on food, carb counting, and keeping my blood sugar steady. i have a history of ed, and when i was diagnosed my weight dropped to around 114. i’m typically around 140 or so and muscular.
does anyone else struggle with their body image after getting diagnosed and taking insulin? i’ve gained back 30 pounds since my hospitalization and while i know it’s healthy and my body is taking in nutrients now, my brain is very upset at me for it.
things i’m doing to help: i’m looking for therapist options, but haven’t found anyone for what i need yet. i’ve seen a couple nutritionists, but they are all telling me i’m doing amazing and plan great meals etc. i don’t feel like i’m doing amazing.
i’ll take any advice, book recs, social media account suggestions, etc that you think may help. :( thank you!
