Mod Post [Meta News] Mechanics - Get Custom Flair! Details inside.
Hey, are you a licensed mechanic? We appreciate you, and want to make it so you stand out from the crowd.
That's why we're offering custom flair to mechanics now!
Just send the mods a mail message with a photo of your certs, with the personal information blocked out, and include in the photo with a handwritten note that has your reddit name and today's date on it. We will review and update your flair with a super special custom mechanic flair.
Want to help mod the sub? Message us about that as well. We're open to getting active people with good car knowledge on board. Just like if you were a mechanic, you'll be severely underpaid ($0/yr) and will get to interact regularly with people who can be crass and impolite. We're looking to add at least three more mods at this time. Don't worry, we won't tell the Snap-On guy where you're working now.
Happy New Year!

Safety Question Car felt in the rotor when trying to change a flat tire. Should I invest in a mechanic to see it?
galleryToday I noticed the front right tire was flat. When I installed the jack, it slowly bent alone (I guess it was fatigued and the pavement was uneven) and the car fell in the rotor. Then I was able to finally change it, but there are some visual scars. Should I be worried? Thanks for your help!

General Tech I think my mechanic messed up my car - advice?
I took my Subaru outback in to the mechanic that replaced my head gaskets, they failed again under warranty. Shop fixed a problem and also stated they thought the radiator was leaking, recommended I replace it. I agreed to have the work done, when I picked it up, drove home with the heater on - it was late and cold - no problems that I noticed.
The following day, I was driving the car when it was hot out and realized the ac wouldn’t blow cold. The car has had zero heating/cooling issues No warning signs, works perfectly Until now
The compressor won’t click on
There’s no simple fix myself, and I feel like messed up wiring when they installed the radiator
How do I go about addressing this? Do I have any legal recourse
The mechanic was difficult and unpleasant to work with, they were unhappy about the warranty work and told me not to use their services in the future
So calling and asking please help you messed up, feels like a closed door.

Engine Should i run zinc additiv?
Hi all! I see a lot of talk about zinc additive for flat tapped cams. But what about rockers? I have a 83 suzuki sj410 with no rollers between the rocker and cam. As far as I understand zinc is used to protect against metal to metal wear. So since the rocker sits directly on the cam, should I run zinc additive? And if so, how much?
All the best🤙🏾

Electrical Can a short charge damage a car battery?
Hi guys.
I want to charge a car battery (probably AGM) as the car is sitting in a parking for the winter. I will charge it with an Audi´s "official" charger, using a Ecoflow River as the power source, since it´s a shared parking and I am not allowed to use any socket...
Question is: Will I damage the battery if I do, let´s say, a couple of 2 hour charge session, as my Ecoflow doen´t allow for a long charging session? The thing is that the charger´s manual says that the charging has different stages (see picture), and I guess that a 2 hour charging session will not make it until "Phase 2 : Absorption", and the charge will be interrupted at "Phase 1 : Full load". So, will the battery get damaged in this case?
Thanks!

I need help fixing something Mercedes A class A250e PHEV charging issue
Hi,
I am not sure if I have posted this in correct section.
I have this error showing in middle of charging my car every time I charge the battery. First I thought it might be the charging point where I am charging the car (Work). After testing it in public charging point it is giving me the same issue. I am using the original cable which was provided with the car.
After 15-20minutes it starts to charge again.
I have purchased this car in December 2024 as approved used from Mercedes showroom which was long distance sale. I am not sure what to do with this now. before I did not had this issue as it was charging normally within 3 hours. Now it takes 8 or more hours to charge.

Weird Noise What is this noise my fiance's 2014 Ford Fusion is making?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
My fiance's 2014 Ford Fusion started making this noise only a month after getting a new steering rack. The slower it drives, the louder it is. Screeching a little when braking too. We greatly appreciate any input!

Engine High mileage car
I have a 2006 scion xb with a five speed manual transmission. I bought it with high mileage (around 150k miles) and is currently pushing 200k miles. I did some work on it (clutch, drive train, radiator) and it runs alright now. Given it's mileage I know I'll need to replace it at some point or do major engine repairs. I've had this car for a couple years now. I drive for Doordash and UberEATS so I get miles on my car faster than most, usually 100+ a day when I dash (4-7 days a week). Given this info how long would y'all guess I have before I'll need to look at getting something else or engine replacement? I'm sorry if this is worded wrong or if this is the wrong sub in general but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I need help fixing something Educate Me
2017 Mitsubishi Lancer. This was hanging down about the centre of my car. I was told it was a heat shield. This morning I started my car, started fine. But all my warning lights are now on and I can't put it in drive. I look underneath and no longer see this. Car drove fine last night. I've been very careful and did not notice this coming off. I'd love to learn what I can.

Heating Mini Cooper blowing hot air on passenger side but cold air on drivers side.
My girlfriend's Mini Cooper is blowing hot air from the passenger side vents but cold air from the drivers side vents.
The AC is turned off, car has been running until engine is of temperature and the settings are set correctly.
The circular vent in the top center of the dashboard, left side blows hot air and right side blows cold air.
Could this be related to a blocked air filter or an issue within the dash unit?

My Project Car 250d with Iveco turbine in the trunk
250d with Iveco turbine in the trunk
Hey there, I'm a newbie who just learned to change its own belts and steering bolts on a clio but I still have a dream. It's not that serious but I would listen and take notes for suggestions My grandpa left me a 250d with an om605, 5cyl with a 5 speed manual and broken ac. It's a slow but reliable engine wich gives problems only in the dual mass flywheel. I would like to give her some beans with a junkyard turbine from the fiat group, a bosch used in 2.5 td engines in the 2000s. Id strap it to the trunk and give the same pressure of the 250td of the era.
I ask the internet how fun it can get, if it's worth a shot and maybe suggestions. I can't find answers in the search bar cuz im stoopid

I need help fixing something Intermittent issue with acceleration no fault codes what to do from here?
Got a 2017 golf tdi 2 litre dsg that's got intermittent problems with acceleration/ performance that seems to be getting worse as time goes on in terms of getting more and more sluggish and the duration of good to bad seems to be more bad where the good is nowhere where it used to be. There was a time in Oct it suddenly went back to functioning at its best again but after a week went back to being how it is now. Also I've noticed recently it's revving higher and making a groaning noise when accelerating when it's at its worst, and sometimes when I put my foot fully down I get nothing much more. Also sometimes there has been times I get a delay when putting my foot down and getting it to accelerate while other times it accelerates straight away. I've taken it to two garages, both volkswagen and another non main dealer garage where they plugged it in and test drove it but they didn't find anything. I'm looking to try another place what should I ask them to check/do?

Redditor's own ride Do my fat tires look silly?
galleryI recently bought rpf1’s that are 15’s to fit the tires that came with the car, but now i think it looks a little funny with all the space between the tire and wheelwell. I really cant afford coils/springs at the moment so I just have to roll with it.
Am I just being insecure or does it ACTUALLY look weird?

Electrical Toyota Camry 2012 with all lights flashing on the dashboard
I have a 2012 Toyota Camry with 280,000 km on the odometer. While driving on the highway at 100–120 km/h, all the lights on the dashboard started blinking, the power steering stopped working, the radio and display shut off, and the car was running. After pulling over, the car wouldn’t restart on its own. I managed to get it started using jumper cables.
Could this issue be related to the alternator not charging the battery? If the alternator failed, I can understand why the car wouldn’t restart, but I’m confused about why the dashboard and other electrical components behaved erratically while the car was still running.

General Tech Shipping a car across the country
Hello! Has anyone recently shipped their car out of state? I’m moving from California to Virginia and will need to ship one of my cars. Curious if anyone has any recommendations or tips on the process. Also thinking about putting a tracking device in it so I can watch it go. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Weird Noise Could smb please help me identify the cause of this sound?
Hello everyone. When the engine is running theres this chirping/squeaky noise. I recorded it: https://imgur.com/a/lrAjJ60 But I have a couple of questions:
If its a belt, how do I know which belt is it? Because as I understand, there is an alternator belt, drive belt or there can be any other belt. How to identify which belt is it?
If the belt doesnt have any visible fibers sticking out of it, how can it be considered "worn"?
As I understand, drive belt connects a lot of components (coolant pump, ac pump, etc), is changing it considered a difficult job? Because I know that depending on the engines there are occasions when even mechanics themselves dont change driving belts/chains because of the complexity.
Its 1.4fsi golf, year 2005, if that matters.
Thank you for any information and help!

Heating Blower motor not working no
My blower motor in my 1997 Buick Lesabre hasn’t been working for a year now and I can’t figure out why, after taking a look in the engine and doing all that, I stuck a wire from the battery to the cord connected to the blower motor and it fired up immediately, but when i turn it on from the control panel nothing happens, i opened up the fuse box and noticed that I am missing two relays, is this the problem? I have circled the two I am missing
(UPDATE) I attempted to swap the horn relay for the blower relay and noticed that there is no cords behind the blower motor relay or the blower speed relay, if anyone has any ideas on this please let me know

My Project Car Are Tesla's reliable or not? I hear too many mixed reviews to understand
I hear on Reddit people complain their Tesla break down at 130k miles, I hear on YouTube their Tesla is at 300k miles and there's 0 issues besides the typical wear & tear. I want your opinions, do you think Tesla is reliable or is it all hype?
My dream car is either the Tesla model X or the Lexus RZ, so if Tesla is good I might choose that as my dream car but the RZ looks so perfect for a family car!

Redditor's own ride What does my car ownership history say about me
- 2004 Lada 112 GLi 1.5L 91 hp 5-speed MT
I bought this car from my uncle almost as soon as I turned 18 since he didn't need it at all anymore and just had to get rid of it somehow. He offered it to me for scrap metal price because the car wasn't worth much in its condition (rusted underbody, some suspension parts had to be replaced) and he planned on getting a newer car anyway. I used the money I had saved up over the years from summer jobs to buy it. Drove it around my neighborhood with my friends for around 3 months without a driver's licence before I almost crashed into a nearby parked car while taking a sharp turn. Another month later I had replaced the front suspension shocks after finding and buying them on a local car scrapyard, since the ones on the car were in a dire need for a replacement, also replaced the springs on them too. The whole replacing thing costed me around ~80$ and after getting my license I drove the car for another 7 months before the engine eventually nuked itself, now the car just sits outside by my garage as I'm unsure of what to do with it besides scrapping it (if the parts are even any worth)
- 2012 Lifan 620 (Solano) 1.6L 106 hp 5-speed MT
This one I bought at 19 a month after the 112 died out, since I was a mad petrolhead that hated walking or taking the bus. After getting a job with stable income at a dealership's car service station and saving up some bits of my salary for a couple of months, I decided to get ballsy and take a small loan (around 1500$) at a bank in order to buy a car that can actually run. After getting rejected once, I tried at a second bank and surprisingly got my request approved. After scouting the used car market, I managed to narrow my search circle down to some cars, some of which were Renault Logans, a couple of Ladas and an old Corolla. Eventually I crossed the Logan out as I considered it way too gramp-ish, crossed out Ladas as a whole since I wanted "something less corny and more interesting", later almost ended up buying the Corolla but changed my mind in favor of a newer car. After scouting the market for some more, I stopped on this 2012 gem of the Chinese car industry, which in the later stages of ownership turned out to have an insanely weak gearbox, bad paint coat with ZERO scratch resistance, with me being able to leave a scratch mark with just my nails and also an easily melting exhaust pipe.
In my last month of owning the car, the gearbox finally fell apart, either because of me speeding wherever I can and sticking the gears aggressively, or just because Chinese quality. It was a cool car though, I always adored its exterior and interior design, with the latter being insanely spacious. Also had a fun time trying to hit 180 km/h in it on the highway with my GF, even 160 felt like 200 in it. So after the gearbox died and I checked how much it costs to repair one, I decided to simply ditch it and sell the car. Sold it for 1200$ and surprisingly found a person willing to buy the car and repair it, now I still see it on the roads occasionally. But maybe I actually regret buying it in the first place.
- 2010 Audi A4 1.8L TFSI 120 hp CVT
My grandpa, who was constantly looking over my shoulder with the whole Solano situation, eventually decided to take pity on me and decided to let me have his 2010 A4 whenever I needed it, since he himself wasn't driving it as often as before due to his constant back pain. I drove it a couple times before, even before the 112, and always loved it. Sadly, the car is 1.8T detuned CDHA engine "Attraction" povspec, though it got the necessities - bi-xenon headlights, LED tails, headlight washers, light and rain sensors, electric trunk open, rear parking sensors, servotronic, an anti-theft alarm, a colored dash computer and a colored AMI screen with the cd-player. Basically, thats that with the extras on the car - sadly... I always wanted the exact car, but in top-spec with all-wheel drive, a sunroof and a 3.2 liter S-line paired with a 6-speed MT.
There's not much to tell about this exact car, except that it eats a 1L of oil per 400 km and that the engine is on it's last legs, about to explode, but I can also say that the ground clearance is too low for our Russian roads. At least for my region, or even neighborhood. The thing is - Im living in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city, and in winter they rarely clean the snow off the roads. This causes me to be stuck frequently with my pathetic FWD and assault the CVT "gearbox" with constant wheelspin on snow while driving around the hood, and I'm not talking about how the underbody plating had popped due to excessive amounts of snow have been stuck between the body and the plastic plating as the car was literally plowing the snow on the roads with its front bumper.
For now, I'm feeling more than content with the A4, even though I wish it would have been an MT. I'm still looking forward to buying another car, that would be my very own, or repair the 112. I'm not sure if it's worth it, though. Maybe I will scrap it, save up some money and buy an older Audi, maybe an older model 100 or a late 80. The one I believe I could afford and that I truly want, would be a B5 A4. But if I manage to get some more funds - you'll see me flying by in a B7.
So what are your thoughts?
