Check your comments for removal. Reddit is removing comments (and maybe posts?) and not listing the removals in Mod Log or Mod Queue, so neither you nor us mods are aware of the removal.

Edit: If you have a problem, send a message to modmail

This is a known issues and I just spotted it in the wild in /r/NewMexico today.

If the mods of this sub removed your comment, you should receive a modmail message alerting you to why. The primary exception to this is if there is a huge chain of uncivil comments and we just nuke the entire chain. We'll still usually send the removal message to the first few posters in the chain.

Some things are hard to shake…

Upvotes

Before I share my recent experience I’m not posting this for sympathy or to make it seem like Taos is a terrible place. I’m posting this for anyone who might travel there and be subjected to the hate that I was.

I (BW) recently had a holiday in NM with my bf (WM), our home base was Santa Fe and then we spent two nights in Taos. Santa Fe was lovely and so were the people. I definitely noticed pretty quickly I didn’t see any black faces in Taos which at first didn’t alarm me but then made sense.

Our second night in Taos my bf and I went to the plaza, which was pretty quiet for holiday time, to take photos in the gazebo with all the lights. Nobody was around except these 2-3 trucks parked off to the side. I couldn’t see what they looked like but I heard a few voices and figured it was a group of dudes. They were blasting rap music — Hood N**** by Gorilla Zoe to be specific, I recognized the song.

We went up into the gazebo and took a few photos then sat on the bench inside for legit two minutes. The music stopped abruptly.

Suddenly one of the guys below (I couldn’t see them) shouted, “I hate N***! I hate N***! I’d string em up myself if I could. Let em shrivel up, let em burn!”

Needless to say my bf and I were shocked. At first we just sat still not knowing what to do, I didn’t want to let them run me out of there but everything in me told me to go and quickly. A lynching threat is not exactly the thing to take lightly.

My bf wanted to say something to them but all I could think about was the many ways that could go really wrong really fast, especially in this town we don’t live in. We left quickly and the music started back up; Spanish trap music.

I had a really hard time sleeping that night and tbh for the rest of the night was super on edge. I heard a bunch of trucks rumbling around, which I’m sure is just the car culture there but also was hard not to think they were driving around trying to see if we were still around…

I went to bed suspicious about a very particular thing and woke up to confirm it with some research; not only was Taos a former sundown town, it’s rumored to still be active today.

We didn’t spare any extra time and packed up our stuff to head back to Santa Fe the next morning.

For any travelers or visitors, this is an important thing to be aware of. The past is meaningful and very much informs the present and the culture that exists there. This was 12/29/24.

A friend shared some Ocotillo seeds from east of Socorro. If I can keep these alive, maybe I'll see flowers in 5-10 years.

Anyone got any photos of the "Darn, Wrong Vegas" billboard on I-25 near Pecos? I've passed it a couple times and I think it's hilarious.

Las Cruces, 1949 - Ovida 'Cricket' Coogler

Hey everyone, I am a screenwriter that is looking into the 1949 murder. I've found some decent resources, but as I don't want to credit, or buy the rights to any of the books available. I'm hoping to draw my own picture of the events surrounding her murder.

75 years is a long time. But I was hoping that there are still families in the area that may have passed down stories, and if so, would you be willing to share them with me.

My DM's are open. Anything you might want to pass on to me can be confidential if you wish.

Thank you all for your time.

Never Been

Hi all, I plan on traveling here for the first time for my birthday. I’m wanting to travel to one new place a year. I did a randomizer and landed on New Mexico! I’m from Indiana and I’ve never been to the west coast so this will all be brand new to me. I know pretty much nothing about what to do in Albuquerque so any tips or information you all could give me would be amazing! I love museums, aquariums, etc. I want to also try food and different spots we don’t have in Indiana. Thanks in advance!

Edit: Thanks everyone for all the info and the advice! I’ll save this for when I go in July and i’ll be sure to post some pictures!

Edit 2: Haha sorry i’m a bit of an idiot 😂 New Mexico definitely isn’t the west coast. Thanks for all your help again everyone!!

Looking to learn more about NM history

With yesterday being the 113th anniversary of Nm statehood I realized I don’t know as much as I would like to know on the history of New Mexico. I’m looking for good suggestions on books that go into the history of the state, looking for a general history, as well as books that cover the history of indigenous peoples in the state.

New Mexico becomes the 47th state in 1912, nicknamed the Land of Enchantment, known for it's Hispanic, Native American culture and cuisine. Also testing of Atomic bomb, sighting of UFOs, desert, mountains. Happy Statehood Day.

Suggestions for Family Law Attorney for Child Custody

Greetings!

I have a dear friend in Hobbs whose ex-husband is disregarding the official custody arrangement for their children and depriving her of access to the children. She has had poor experiences with attorneys in Lea County.

Can anyone suggest any family law attorneys in the state who is willing to work with a client in Hobbs? Thank you all for your help.

Took the Gooseberry Springs trail up. Road there was mostly in good shape, just look out for patches of ice in more shaded areas, same goes for the trail itself. Had a wonderful time, can’t wait to come back <3 such a beautiful place.

Please take a moment to read his info. Troy has been missing now 9 days with no communication. His family and friends are extremely worried. If you are in the area, keep an eye and ear out for him. We have to stay positive in this time.

Information on Rodarte New Mexico

I want to know about Rodarte New Mexico. What kind of place is it? Who lives or lived there? Who founded Rodarte and is it tied to descendants of the Rodarte family who resettled New Mexico after the Pueblo revolt?

Moving soon?

My husband is moving to a new base in April, he’s Air Force, we only just got married recently and have been seperate since I’m in Alabama and he’s in Alaska. I’m super anxious about moving, we’re going to Holloman AFB, and I have not a single clue of what to expect or look for?? I’m on housing duty if we can’t get anything on base, but I’ve heard a lot of bad about Alamogordo! That seems to be the most realistic place near base to look for a place to live while we’re there but I don’t think I’ve heard anything good about it

I’ve been in Alabama my whole life, painfully humid, living the city right above Gulf Shores, and I’m used to the way everything is here and it’s going to be a huge change for me and I can’t stop running all the bad things that could happen in my head so I need positives along side the things to look for bad wise. Help me 😭
