Nightlife Look up tonight…you will see the International Space Station flying directly overhead starting at 8:27pm

1.5k Upvotes

Update: Hot damn! Did you see that little booger come zipping by??? I hope that you got a great view. That was a really terrific flyby.

Thanks for playing along tonight, everybody!

If you want to see the station some other time, download one of the ISS tracker apps and you’ll get a notification the next time it is in the neighborhood. Otherwise, I’ll try to remember to post again when there’s another excellent viewing opportunity.

Have a wonderful night!

You will be able see the International Space Station with your naked eye tonight (Wednesday, August 4th). It will be visible for almost 7 minutes between 8:27pm and 8:34pm. If you have never seen it flying overhead, just step outside and give it a shot!

This will be a terrific flyby...clear skies in this evening's forecast and no moonlight. Last month we had a very good viewing opportunity, but this one will be excellent! We only get a couple of visits that are this good every year.

The ISS will first appear in the Northwest (NW) and it will be moving to the Southeast (SE). Its path will go almost directly overhead (straight up in the sky is 90°…tonight, the station will be at 89°). As long as the sky stays clear (no thick clouds or fog), you will be able to see it from wherever you are in Southern California.

When it first appears at 8:27pm it will still be low in the NW sky. It will take at least a minute or two before you spot it, so don't give up. As long as you are scanning the sky from NW to SE, you'll see it…a little white spot hauling ass overhead. You will absolutely know it when you see it.

The ISS passes over Los Angeles pretty regularly, but most of the time it is low on the horizon and only visible for a brief period of time...or it's flying over us during the daytime. Tonight, however, it will have nice long trajectory straight over our heads.

Fun facts: - the ISS is 254 miles up - it travels at 17,130 mph (4.76 miles per second) - it orbits the globe 16 times a day (every 90 minutes) - it is the length of a football field (357 feet) - it weighs over 460 tons - it currently has 7 people on board (3 American, 2 Russian, 1 French, 1 Japanese) - it just got a new 43-foot-long, 23-ton addition which has new crew quarters, new life support equipment, and a new toilet (!) - it also just got a snazzy new 37-foot-long robot arm

Nightlife Look up tonight…the International Space Station will be visible almost directly overhead starting at 8:43pm

UPDATE: Well, seems like the clouds got the best of a lot of us (but not all of us) tonight. The ISS will be back, but it might be a couple of months before we get another one of these long overhead passes. If you want to catch it another time, you might want to check out one of the tracker apps which can alert you when it visits us again.

You will be able see it with your naked eye. It will be visible between 8:43pm and 8:50pm.

The ISS will first appear in the Southwest and it will be moving to the Northeast. Its path will go almost directly overhead. As long as the sky is clear (no thick clouds or fog), you should be able to step outside and see it from wherever you are in Southern California.

When it first appears at 8:43pm it will still be low in the sky. It will take at least a minute or two before you spot it, so don't give up. As long as you are scanning the sky from SW to NE, you'll see it…a little white spot hauling ass overhead.

The ISS passes over Los Angeles pretty frequently, but it is usually lower on the horizon and only visible for a brief period of time...or it's flying over us during the daytime. Tonight, however, it will have nice long trajectory straight over our heads.

DTLA was beautiful and the event was great. It doesn’t beat when it was back in its first years but it was a good return.

Tom Kenny voice over actor played and there was a Lucha match.

Nightlife Jazz in Los Angeles. Who cares to join?

Yes, this topic is repeatedly discussed. Jazz is a varied genre and no one place caters to all the sub-categories. Sadly for me, seems like the more avant-garde stuff is rarely play (RIP Blue Whale and ETA).

Seems like Sam First has what I am looking for, but it is a far drive to the west side. So the primary point of my post is to find others that want to attend shows together. I live in Los Feliz and would love to split the ride with others nearby.

Back to the common question: where can I find some jazz (based on my interests)? Since I go by myself, I do not like supper club atmospheres such as Catalina and Vibrato. I will still go to those venues if someone good is playing. Saw Pharoah Sanders at Catalina and I gladly sat in a corner, drinking my two drink minimum. I like 60s/70s era jazz. Do not care for vocal jazz, swing jazz and fusion (looking at you Baked Potato), which is what most jazz performed is nowadays. No guitar wanking jazz. Love indie jazz hybrids (Isotope 217), modern combos like everything Shabaka Hutchings, samba/bossa nova/forro/world.

EDIT: Yes, I know about Jazz Is Dead. Go to most of their Brazilian music shows. Anyone care to join for Marcos Valle? I was not into him when he first/last played LA, but have since became a huge fan.

Nightlife Broadway Bar

Sadly, this bar will be closing at the end of the month.

20 years ago this place opened up and became a staple of the downtown bar scene over the years.

It was my go to spot for many years and the neon sign out front certainly became iconic.

I'll be there this weekend to say good bye and I hope some of you all can make it out there as well.

Goodbye Broadway Bar. You will be missed.

Nightlife Reminder to watch your phones/wallets while you're out at night, almost got pickpocketed at Weho.

Was out in Weho last night and caught a pickpocket trying to steal my friend's phone. We were walking past Heart on Santa Monica Blvd and I noticed three people (2 men/1 woman) who were looking at each other/seemed like they knew each other but started walking separately without talking. The woman had an umbrella but she wasn't covering anyone else but herself.

One guy started to walk in front of my friend, the lady slowed to walk directly behind us, and the last guy walked even further behind her. I slowed down a bit too cause I thought it was weird then the guy ahead suddenly walked slower right in front of my friend so she had to slow down as well and I saw the lady reach toward her pocket and turned towards the bus stop. I followed the lady and grabbed her wrist and she gave up the phone right away. She looked to her accomplices and they turned around but started walking away once they heard me announcing that they were pickpocketing. Didn't see any police nearby so I just let her go, looking back I wish I could have done more. The two guys ended up turning right at the end of the block and just standing there looking at me, seemed like they had a car or stash somewhere around there. I've also seen videos of a stash of phones in the trash can in Weho so maybe the lady was trying to stash it at the bus stop trash can.

Anyways just wanted to share my experience and remind everyone to be careful when you're out and about enjoying nightlife.

Edit: To clarify the phone was in the front jacket pocket.

Nightlife Visiting LA with teen son. Looking for evening entertainment.

So, my son(M14) and I are flying out to be on an episode of Judge Judy. (Still blown away by this) I am trying to make the most of this free vacation and don't wanna be stuck in the hotel. While the sun is out I think we'll hit the beach and do some shopping but I'm having trouble finding anything fun to do in the evenings. All the comedy venues I've looked at are 21+ and I just don't know the area. My son is pretty mature for his age and I was trying do do something a little more grown up but am open to any suggestions. Looking for this Friday night(July 22nd)Thanks in advance.

Edit: added son's age

Edit2: I really appreciate all the amazing suggestions. Thank you all!

Nightlife Gay life in Echo Park?

I remember there used to be a gay Los Angeles sub, what happened to it? Anyway I’m thinking of moving to echo park, I’m a gay professional in my mid 30s. How vibrant is gay life in echo park? I know silverlake is nearby but what about echo park, is it a popular area among gay people? Ideally I’d love to move to weho but there $3800 gets you a ground floor apartment with the windows facing a wall.

Nightlife What are the best areas not in DTLA to stay in LA county?

I am visiting in February and have stayed in typical spots like Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, DTLA, Huntington Beach ect… what are some areas worth checking out that aren’t overhyped and overpriced for the food scene? I hear good things about Arcadia and Burbank? Wondering LA people’s thoughts as well as suggestions for anything else that’s interesting as far as things activities/things to do. (If there are spots you want to gatekeep/don’t want to get blown up please DM! Lol)
