Kodak has deleted pictures of Xianjiang Uyghurs from their Instagram after pressure from Chinese media & commentors News/Article

Wow I saw that post without any of the original context and assumed that the photog had posted something racist/offensive. To see why they actually removed it….that’s super disappointing.

Edit: The number of people responding to this and claiming it’s American propaganda is also super fucking disappointing.

If you are horrified by the US locking immigrants up in “detention facilities”, you should be horrified by what is happening to the Uyghurs. Full stop.

91

u/I_Recommend Jul 19 '21

Yeah, Chinese people believe it's both racist and offensive (to their reality, to their facts, to their culture, to their politics, to their patriotism). What matters in dealing with China is perspective.

That all said, it's hard for me to believe that the Chinese government would actually sanction them in any way over a few weak online protests, given how small Kodak is and secondarily, just how unknown they are there. Whatever initial 'netizen' criticism there was in Chinese social media has probably already been censored because the people can't even have a hint of truth that there may be some kind of controversy over Xinjiang related to human rights.

42

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '21

That’s not necessarily true, since Kodak Alaris is owned by a Chinese company, so the higher ups in Alaris probably have a good amount of information and sway over the social media presence

15

u/I_Recommend Jul 19 '21

Not entirely but there is truth in what you say and it seems the chemicals and paper are made there.

According to a document lodged with the UK’s Company House on November 23, the Board of the Pension Protection Fund holds ’75 percent or more’ of the shares of Kodak Alaris, ’75 percent or more’ of the voting rights of Kodak Alaris, and can appoint or remove the majority of the Board of Directors of the company. (The PPF in fact holds 100 percent of the shares in Kodak Alaris.)

Ironic statement from Kodak considering how entrenched film and photography (and art in general) is in politics. Photography brings dark things to light and shows the world a mirror. How many “iconic” photos have a political subtext? Are they going to come out and distance themselves from every politically associated photo in their feed? I get why they are doing it, but at least acknowledge the actual reason. Removing the post IS a political statement on its own. Who do they think they’re fooling?

61

u/rzrike Jul 19 '21

Exactly. Film has been used for political expression for 100+ years! What are they talking about saying that they aren’t a “platform for political commentary”?

20

u/amut03 Jul 19 '21

Their entire business is basically funded by politics. Some of the most publicised, recognizable, and controversial photos that defined what good photojournalism is have been taken on kodak.

16

u/zushini Jul 19 '21

Exactly. Since when is any photograph of any human being a political statement?

I can see no other context where this would apply other then under the boot of a tyrannical government.

5

u/octopaws Jul 20 '21

In the late late 60s/70s (?) Kodak got into a lot of controversy due to their film stock not being able to render darker skin tones, whilst only appealing photography to white America. Kodak has always been in and out of political scrutiny

6

u/viriconium_days Jul 20 '21

This was probably related to the fact that they didn't hire black people. It was treated as something that didn't need to be said, just an obvious fact. Black people were really allowed to live in the company town, so they didn't receive many black applicants either.

3

u/rundfunk90 Jul 20 '21

And they only fixed it when wood companies started complaining about their dark wood not being rendered accurately on film.

Disappointed in Kodak folding so easily on this and not leaving them up but can’t say I’m surprised, I was hoping for them to have some backbone though.

54

u/taistolaisuus Jul 19 '21

The statement was massively misleading, designed not to cause outcry with Uyghur supporters. That’s the reason I made this post, but lets hope the media reports on this as well.

72

u/Analogbuckets Jul 19 '21

Time to #BoycottKodak

85

u/markyymark13 Mamiya 7II | 500CM | M4 | F100 | XA Jul 19 '21

Yep, if you're unhappy with their decision, time to boycott and vote with your wallet otherwise nothing will change.

62

u/Itsjustadam1 Jul 19 '21

I agree with the sentiment, but at the same time who else will I buy color film from? Fuji is practically dropping every stock they can, so the boycott is a hard thing to actually do as a color shooter. I do think they would have gotten a lot of support if they’d just left them up though, it’s not an easy spot to be in as someone who doesn’t really shoot b/w.

36

u/markyymark13 Mamiya 7II | 500CM | M4 | F100 | XA Jul 19 '21

I agree completely with you - I don't really shoot B/W and since Fuji dropped Pro 400H i don't have any Portra alternatives. There is still Superia and C200 - which happens to be one of my favorites at least.

13

u/FabioAlfa23 Jul 19 '21

Well, if you can you can always opt for Lomo CN line! You get a quality that's between the professional and consumer line with the price of the last one and a wide choice of ISO

36

u/sillo38 Jul 19 '21

Those are also Kodak films. Though they're Eastman so I guess you wouldn't be supporting the Kodak that released the statement above.

14

u/markyymark13 Mamiya 7II | 500CM | M4 | F100 | XA Jul 19 '21

After an experience using Lomo's 120 rolls and their god awfully notorious fat rolls causing light leaks I swore to never buy those again, at least for MF.

5

u/FabioAlfa23 Jul 19 '21

That's strange, i never had an issue with Lomo rolls and i shoot both 35 and 120, maybe results may vary depending on the loading mechanism of the camera. I use an old Flexaret TLR that maybe has a little bit more retention for rolls

3

u/dannyphoto Mamiya RZ67 Jul 19 '21

Really? I’ve only had great results with Lomo film in my mf systems.

Plus, they simply deleted an instagram post. I'd rather boycott companies that are directly assisting the CCP in Xinjiang. Put your voice where it actually matters.

13

u/Itsjustadam1 Jul 20 '21

I got downvoted for making fun of a guy who said I should switch to digital for not sticking to my principles, but I’m not quitting my favorite hobby because Kodak deleted an instagram post.

6

u/limeyptwo Jul 20 '21

BTW, here's a list of companies that you should actually boycott, all linked to forced Uighur labor.

1

u/Proffesssor Jul 20 '21

Good that it's not just a list of companies, but also straightforward action to apply pressure on Nike.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '21

Just shoot digital for color. If your principles are less important to you than your pictures you’ve got weird priorities.

19

u/limeyptwo Jul 19 '21

There are companies that are actually assisting the CCP's actions in Xinjiang. Kodak just deleted an instagram post for questionable reasons. If you want anything to change, direct your attention at those companies which actually have important roles.

On the one hand I say, yeah, we can make their views change with our dollars.

On the other hand I go, damn, it was probably some suit high up that forces them to retract, meanwhile most people at Kodak probably disagree with the decision, but have no say.

21

u/MakerofThingsProps Jul 19 '21

Yep. Pretty dumb for a company as relatively fragile as Kodak to so something so universally disagreeable.

Shame.

5

u/caketaster Jul 20 '21

They’ve turned comments off on several of the recent ones but I commented about this on several - maybe 10 or 15 photos back? They’re really trying to suppress discussion and act like there isn’t a place for politics in photography. Disgusting.

18

u/amut03 Jul 19 '21

Boycott big industry Chinese products. We should be doing this regardless of the government, because the price we pay for some of these goods is so low that there is no way the workers are treated ethically.

There are many small artisan builders, designers, etc. who just happen to live in china and unfortunately face the repercussions of their government's actions. These are the people we should support instead.

Kodak, like all companies, should absolutely look into sourcing materials and chemicals elsewhere - there is no reason they can't and no it absolutely won't lead to nonsense like $30 Portra.

Once again this just demonstrates how economic reliance on dictatorships stifles free speech and undermines the principles of freedom abroad. Uyghurs and Chinese international students have to deal with being literally stalked and doxxed while studying abroad for expressing contrary ideas or views in the presence of nationalists or on social media, and boy, aren't plenty of Chinese hard nationalists. They self-censor at all times just so that their family aren't interrogated back home.

Companies are clearly unable to self-regulate with regards to China and freedom of expression. Maybe federal regulations which force them to act or penalise them when they fail aren't the answer, but when governments do nothing in response then the Communist Party successfully erodes our way of life an inch at a time. China is set to become the world's largest economy by 2030 or sooner. If the free world refuses to reduce their reliance on China now, then once they are the largest economy, it may not be possible at all in some industries where Chinese supply chains will dominate the global market.

I have no doubt that the vast majority of Kodak's customers live abroad - not in China - and now they've seemingly just alienated all of them. Maybe the art community ought to throw in some #FreeXinjiang with their #Kodak so they never forget about it.

20

u/dudedramalmao Jul 20 '21

$30 Portra is coming regardless, give it a year or two

23

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '21

I mean, Chinese companies own some of Kodak’s businesses… have you seen what’s written on a pack of D76 développer these days? To think kodak is an American company in 2021… American brand maybe, but kodaks corporate structure post bankruptcy is wack

21

u/sillo38 Jul 19 '21

Kodak isn't even one company, it's 2 or 3 at this point and Eastman doesn't really do any of the people facing parts anymore.

9

u/redisforever Jul 19 '21

Kodak recently made a deal with Sino Promise to have them make most of their stuff. It was mostly their industrial size stuff before like flexicolor. So they have a huge interest in China.

I understand why Kodak did this, but it's still upsetting. It's a smart business move to make sure Kodak plays nice with a massive and growing economy, especially given the manufacturing prowess and growing consumer market that China possesses.

However, assisting the erasure of the Uyghur people seems to fly in the face of the spirit of photograhy. The medium is rooted on recording moments for the future. Kodak is doing the opposite.

19

u/matigol1906 Jul 19 '21 edited Jul 19 '21

Kodak is a big name, but a really fragile company at the moment, to start a war with one of the most important countries in regard to supplying materials

10

u/I_Recommend Jul 19 '21

Kodak is a national asset in terms of IP and research so surely, I'd like to believe the US government would not let them collapse. After all, corporate bailouts are one of the great American pastimes. It would be an incredibly bad indictment on the US for them to allow China to crush one of the greatest American companies over a single internet post criticising Winnie.

6

u/JayTongue Jul 19 '21

The international community kind of already has rolled over on this issue. There could be actual sanctions they levy against Winnie except the global economy is down and restrictions would forestall recovery.

3

u/I_Recommend Jul 20 '21

True, and only Russia is allowed to play the big baddy in the East, because they're too poor to sell us anything.

I'm not sure any large government truly cares about human rights when there is ongoing genocide and now indiscriminate killing of civilians in Myanmar by the army and most governments are still happy to do business with the Junta particularly if it is behind closed doors. I give Myanmar as an example where other countries could more easily intervene (compared to China), and where there is also a lot of undisputed evidence. At least China is strongly relevant to US foreign interests compared to Myanmar but they're so entwined with China they still do nothing concrete, along with everyone else. Humanity is still so cooked despite being so advanced, isn't it?

4

u/Jrbdog Jul 20 '21

Kodak isn't nearly as important as they once were. I don't think the US government would really care that much if Kodak went under. They've already gone bankrupt once.

Plus, remember what happened the last time the government invested in Kodak?

16

u/the_spookiest_ Jul 19 '21

Fuck them. The film is made in the u.s as is the chemicals.

Fuck their growing economy too, what other film will they use? Ilford? FUJI?!

That’s about all that is around now a days, and if they all told CCP to piss off. Well. Sucks for Winnie the shit.

18

u/sillo38 Jul 19 '21

The film definitely is, but I don't think most of the chemistry is made in the US anymore.

11

u/PunchCard-Negative Jul 19 '21

I’m choosing to boycott, personally.

I mostly do black & white so this doesn’t hurt as much as I’m sure it does for others, especially fans of Portra. I was just starting to experiment with TMAX over my beloved Ilford Delta 100, but this answered that quandary for me.

When I get the itch to shoot color I’ll just do slide film. Provia here I come!

11

u/Mistertreefrog Jul 19 '21

Sucks that I’ll have to pay more for color film or shoot only black and white but I will not support a company that isn’t willing to stand by basic human rights.

14

u/imChopBustin Jul 19 '21

Sheesh. Had seen the apology this morning, wasn’t sure what for. This shit is depressing. You’d think these companies would see the benefit in having a backbone in terms of PR, but I guess the market is too strong.

Or do they face repercussions?

Does anyone know if the Chinese gov actually says something to a Kodak, or say Universal when the John Cena incident happened?

Or is it the opposite? Shareholders within the company panic about China’s response and make them restrict?

Either way. This shits dark.

17

u/Appropriate-Title201 Jul 19 '21

It's usually just a bunch of cringy insecure male Chinese keyboard warriors between 10-30 maliciously reporting this. Nothing personal though, they tend to report anything they don't agree with, politics related or otherwise. They can't take any criticism of regulations and laws (unless it's hurting them as well then suddenly they forgot all their love for the government) and get triggered by the smallest things.

What is curious is the timing of removal and or timing of making the removal a news. This isnt about backbone... this is about markets... and Mainland China being as large of a market as it is, and Kodak having as much Mainland Chinese investment as it has, they have to appease the CCP and its fragile ass narcissistic ego all the way to the top. Just like what happened with the NBA.

Hell, America cant even say that the Republic of China/Taiwan is its own country (it fucking is, fuck you - xi jinping) without Mainland China losing its proverbial shit and starting a war over this crap.

There are companies who have been sued by Mainland China or shut down for not including tibet or taiwan in its boundaries when they depict it in the media, or on shirts or whatever else.

Personally, I say screw Mainland China. Antagonize the crap out of their fragile egos and lets see what they do. If they threaten to go nuclear over it, then they will be the bitches at the end of the day and they will 'lose face' which is about the worst thing that can happen in their pathetic minds.

This is evil. Please call it what it is. It’s evil.

u/TheBlurstOfGuys Jul 20 '21

America is evil.

u/Hardashfaq Jul 20 '21

It's ready heart breaking and a sad day for free speech and free will.

Kodak weak sauce

3

u/zuss33 Jul 20 '21

Didn’t something similar happen with Leica as well?

Extremely disappointing, unfortunately they kind of have a sort of half monopoly on lots of consumer film but I’ll try to find a substitute for Portra and color plus as well as gold when I can

5

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '21

Fucking cowards

4

u/amccune Jul 19 '21

I’m so tired of companies doing the bidding of the Chinese - or ANY - government. Fuck you, Kodak!

6

u/blakb1rd Jul 20 '21

Hey, at least there's some Streisand Effect going on to help spread the news.

7

u/sukumizu M6/ETRSI/FE/Klasse W Jul 19 '21

Good thing I shoot Ilford now. Fuck you Kodak.

4

u/wllmhrdn Jul 20 '21

what else do u expect from a corporation? this is how capitalism works. nothing subtracts from the bottom line, even when it appears to.

7

u/blkwinged Jul 19 '21

Is kodak owned by the chinese now?

11

u/sillo38 Jul 19 '21

Kodak Alaris sold part to a Chinese company and I imagine Eastman gets a huge chunk of it's raw materials from China.

3

u/blkwinged Jul 19 '21

I believe that.

You can successfully invade any country just by buying it out.

Et tu, Kodak??? I’d have thought you more proud of your long history. Come to think of it… Kodak was bought out by a Chinese company after they went bankrupt, weren’t they?

2

u/mryeay55 Jul 20 '21

They’ve removed comments from all posts as well.

edit: not all, just a couple of the recent ones.

2

u/rbizzle_10 Jul 20 '21

Damn I saw that post and was astonished that they posted something so politically sound. It was actually what prompted me to follow their insta account. But now, seeing how easily they’re swayed, it just makes me want to unfollow.

3

u/skeptrostachys Jul 20 '21

That's coward move Kodak, but i'm glad everytime any company pull out this weak stant since they are giving away their crime and made it easier to put at end use of their product.

Interested to see this Project (without censorship of course) of documenting life series of acute repression in the mass arbitrary detention of Uyghurs. If you can gag such human abuse still exist in modern world. Correlation to what he's saying: the disturbing simultaneous increase of Han-chinese tourism in the region - what is this means? those barbarian touring for human safari zoo now? Dark tourism smh.

3

u/pierrroooo Jul 20 '21

Since when supporting basic human rights is considered as “politic “?

3

u/JayTongue Jul 20 '21

Since it got in the way of someone making a buck.

Why is the whole world ass-kissing up to the Chinese Authoritarian government? This had better stop or all of us will have to learn their language. And for those in the USA, it better stop today since they already have taken (Bought, given, or stolen) most of our jobs and manufacturing base. Remember the 'spy chip' in computers scare of about six years ago? Yeah, well it turns out the 'chips' are actually embedded at the mask scale in almost every internet-capable device bought since then. And you better start worrying about all your 'toys' since the Israeli-designed phone hack software went 'wild' recently. Don't forget the Chinese have publically stated their goal is world domination. Be afraid, very afraid. They are NOT our 'Friends' at all. They play the long game while the rest of the world is only looking ahead to the next quarter.

What a world we live in! While everyone here is berating Kodak, there are some things to consider why Kodak chose to do what it did.

It could technically stand against China and keep the post up. But it will risk losing business in China. OK, maybe not a problem. Perhaps there aren't many film photographers in China. Or maybe Chinese cinema doesn't use Kodak film stock that much.

But then there are the indirect implications that are not related to consumer-grade photographic film. China being what it is, could potentially go about not only banning just Kodak, but also banning any foreign movie made with Kodak film stock. This could mean that plenty of Hollywood movies that are shot on film would not be allowed into China. Meaning, Hollywood could be losing business in one of its biggest lucrative markets. By antagonizing China, Kodak is not only jeopardizing itself but also an entire industry here.

And I get it. "Kodak should have a backbone, they should have a spine, they should have balls, do what's right, etc, etc..." But Kodak had already been fading into obscurity since the late 90s. For a company that's barely hanging on, it will do anything it can to stay on.

Kodak is the analog world's GameStop.

u/zachsilvey M4-P | IIIc | F3 | ETRSi Jul 20 '21

It's not just about selling film to Chinese consumers. Kodak can't make film without a Chinese supply chain.

2

u/WDR_937 Jul 20 '21

Yeah, there's that too.

2

u/WDR_937 Jul 20 '21

Why am I being downvoted? I'm not supporting China or Kodak's decision, you dinguses! 🙄

Unless you want to start paying $30+ for a roll of Portra you want Kodak to maintain a healthy relationship with the Chinese supply chain for chemicals and materials.

Typical right-wing rhetoric.

Kodak didn't advocate genocide by removing the post. Kodak didn't support concentration camps by removing the post.

14

u/marakh Jul 19 '21

I’ve said it, and I will say it again; you’re deluded.

Self censorship because of the CCP supports concentration camps and genocide.

6

u/dcw15 Jul 19 '21

Right wing hahahaha. I don't think it's the right who are against death camps of a minority group buddy.

Genuinely confused on how driving an Audi has anything to do with this conversation?

4

u/zachsilvey M4-P | IIIc | F3 | ETRSi Jul 19 '21

It doesn’t. It also was cheaper than a Honda Civic.

8

u/I_Recommend Jul 19 '21

"$30 Portra" etc. is complete nonsense if you have at least a modicum of knowledge on industry or global supply chains. It's like people saying iPhones will be 4x the price if made in the USA despite the facts showing otherwise.

You think the world hasn't been through the issue dozens of times before? Two world wars clued countries in quite well on producing things elsewhere.
