Community [META] /r/Analog Analysis - Top 1000 & Random 1000 posts compared, Jan-Dec 2022
We decided to do this again but push it back so a single year could be done. zzpza did the work of acquiring the data to be used. Malamodon did all the analysis work, therefore all data is subject to their biases. They have done a lot work on the previous ones, and the comparison between each year's graphs show no massive swings that would indicate a sudden change in biases, so should be considered accurate enough for this project.
Method
All the posts to /r/Analog for the time period (January 2022 to December 2022) were imported into a database. Deleted and removed posts were excluded. 1300 random posts were selected using the SQL rand() feature and saved to a tab in a Google spreadsheet. A second export from the database was then done, ordered by post score; the top 1300 were saved to a different tab in the same spreadsheet. 1300 was used as further manual sorting obviously removes more posts so you'd come up short with only 1000 in the starting set. Any excess entries left over after the final data set was done were discarded.
Everything after this was then manually processed. Types of posts removed: any remaining deleted/removed posts, all non-photo posts including videos, and gallery/album posts. Any posts in Random that were present in Top were removed from Random.
That done, we had a useable data set for Top 1000 and Random 1000. This document is available to anyone to view or copy to their own google drive and do their own analysis.
The categories were kept the same as previous years for consistency. This isn't comprehensive but we felt the ones chosen accounted for the major genres of photography, anything that did not fit neatly into one or two of these categories was categorised as 'Other'. Each photo was then manually assessed and categorised. This process is obviously subjective and imperfect, but we believe we have stuck to our definitions. We hit an issue of not being able to always neatly slot a photo into just one category so we allowed for a secondary category to be flagged when it was felt a post was split in subject equally or in the 60/40, 70/30 range. Anything marked 'Other' or with a secondary flag was reassessed after the initial categorisation pass.
Additional attributes were also catalogued: -
- Black and white or colour film
- Film used
- Camera used
- Is the post NSFW
- Multi exposure (2 or more exposures on the same frame)
- Film rebate present (having the film borders around the image)
The 'Film Used' column was consolidated for certain stocks, so Portra 160, 400, 800, NC, VC, etc. is all just Portra, same thing for Superia, Cinestill, Lomo CN, etc. Only the top 10 was chosen in the charts due to the large number, even with the consolidation. There was demand for a breakdown of Portra stocks since it accounts for such a large portion, so that was done.
Results
What is data without charts. So here they are:
- Photo Subject - Top vs. Random
- Top 10 Films Used - Top 1000 Pie Chart
- Top 10 Films Used - Random 1000 Pie Chart
- Colour or Black & White - Top vs. Random
- Breakdown of Kodak Portra - Top vs. Random
- Breakdown of film formats used
- Breakdown of camera manufacturers
Comparisons
Since there is now three sets of data, some charts comparing the three years were also done.
Opinions
The results aren't massively different from the previous year, so previous opinions still hold up.
The disparity remains between male and female subjects in the top versus random. Landscape edges ahead as the most popular category, with animals/nature rocketing up from last year to second.
NSFW has seen an increase in Top from 1-2% to 7%. It should be noted that 5 users account for about 40% of those posts.
Kodak Gold and Cinestill films increase in popularity, with a decline in Superia. Black and White films getting a bit more popular in Top as well; maybe more people are shooting B&W now due to the rising costs of colour film.
A small tussle between medium format and 35mm goes back to 2020 levels. Could be the same reason as with colour film, medium format is more expensive per shot, and cameras for it continue to increase in price.
In Top, Pentax sees a 7% decrease, Hasselblad a marginal decline, Nikon seeing a nearly 5% increase in popularity.
Think we suck at this? Want to do your own analysis or something else? Feel free to copy the google document we used and go ahead. We obviously can't guarantee that between this being posted, and anyone else using the data, that some posts may have been removed by users for whatever reasons.
If you do use our data, please post a link in the comments section to the analysis.

Community [META] When and when not to post photos here
Just a reminder about when you should and shouldn't post your photos here.
This subreddit is to complement, not replace r/analog. The r/analog subreddit is for sharing your photos. This subreddit is for discussion.
If you have a specific question and you are using your photos as examples of what you are asking about, then include them in your post when you ask your question.
If you are sharing your photos here without asking a discussion based question, they will be removed and you will be directed to post them in r/analog.
Thanks! :)

Community The Film Noir
Hey all, just a heads up. The Instagram page Noir Film/thenoir.film has been posting extremely hateful comments, as well as stories with racist undertones. When they got backlash they tried to backpedal by claiming the screenshots were fake. Then they claimed they were hacked. Finally, they blamed an unnamed "employee" in their "office" and claimed this person was fired, but they refuse to share where this office is or who exactly runs the account. Their Instagram account doesn't disclose a location, they claim to be based in New York, but they charge in euros with their PayPal account, among other inconsistencies.
They charge photographers for features, but their followers and likes seem largely fake. Despite branding themselves as a film photography page, they feature digital work and tag it with film hashtags, likely because they'll accept anyone who pays. After a ChatGPT statement they are now deleting comments and blocking people for continuing to ask questions and hold them accountable.
Screenshots to support all of this are here, there are so many more.
Stay safe out there everyone!

Gear/Film Why is Slide film so expensive?
I’m wondering why slide film is so darn expensive. A roll of Ektachrome will set you back 400 Swedish Kronor right now. About 35€. I really want to shoot more slides but I just can’t justify the price.
Provia is about 30€ if you’re lucky enough to find it. Also, are Provia and Velvia getting discontinued?
Thx

Gear/Film Lens scratches are nothing to worry about.
Any loss of contrast is mitigated when stopping down, even with the sun in frame.
Backlit subject? A little glow, but that's about it.
In normal use, you can't tell these photos apart from ones taken with a squeaky clean lens.
The lens in question, a very beat up W-Nikkor 3.5cm f/1.8.
I like beat-up gear because it's cheap and just as usable. All the more reason to actually use it rather than worry about damaging its value (if it's actually worth anything in the first place). Shot a roll of XP2 and K400 on a short trip last weekend with my new Nikon S3, and I think I've found a rangefinder I don't hate.
I quite like the results -- I just think it's funny how catastrophic the lens looks if you shine a light through it, and yet it produces very nice images.

Scanning Negative Lab Pro - Why do my DNGs look so washed out compared to TIFFs?
Hi, I’m fairly new to scanning my own negatives. I have a plustek 8300i and was playing around with SilverFast. I recently acquired VueScan. I prefer the interface in VueScan and the ability to remove dust before the DNG export.
I have seen written in many places that DNGs are the recommended format to feed into NLP. I have no problem exporting these from VueScan, however when running the images through NLP the colors seem very washed out/cool compared to the TIFF format I was getting from SilverFast. I’d argue that the TIFF looks better.
Please see the attached images, the image on the left is the SilverFast TIFF and the image on the right is the VueScan DNG.
I am following the NLP VueScan guide for scanning the DNGs. I don’t bother with the exposure lock, also I’m not sure if the “Update Vuescan/Silverfast DNGs” is needed / makes any difference.
For those who are more familiar with scanning, do these results look normal? Why is DNG recommended over TIFF? Am I missing something here?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Gear/Film Good deal for Canon AE-1?
I’ve been talking with someone on FB market place who has a Canon AE-1 and some equipment for sale. They offered $300 for the whole deal. It comes with Canon AE-1, Canon 35mm 2.8f, 50mm 1.8f, 135mm 2.8f, and a Soligor 80-200 w/ macro 4.5f lenses. There's also a Rokunar flash and a handful of lens filters. And a Lowe-Pro cushioned bag that fits everything.
It looks to be a decent deal, given it comes with 4 lenses, some filters, flash and a case for the lot. Just wanted some insight on if I’d be paying too much. I honestly was looking to get a Nikon FM2, as that was my first camera and I miss it. But this Canon just kind of fell in my lap, so I’m thinking of going for it.
Any thoughts, input or concerns are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Other (Specify)... Is it common for svema film to not come in a canister?
I opened a box of Svema foto 32 and it was just a roll of film packed in tin foil and black paper.
From what i see, the other boxes i have are the same. They're all 35mm.
I found one of my rolls of foto 64 in a canister, but the rest are the same.
Is this normal and i just didn't know?

Hello, I recently received a Nikon F100 from my great uncle. I loaded a roll of ilford HP5 400 into my Nikon and for some reason my camera won’t advance past 1.
Any ideas what I need to fix before I send it in to get fixed?

Scanning Lab Scan vs. Dusty Home Scan - Plustek 8200i SE | SilverFast 9 | Edited in Lightroom
galleryTaken with a test roll on Minolta X-700 and Kodak UltraMax 400, aperture 2.8 on a sunny day. I’m having a hard time getting vibrancy in the whites, greens in the grass, and other colors to pop like the lab scan. Any suggestions and critique is welcome, other than the obvious dust that will be fixed later.
My only software at the moment is Lightroom and I’m super new to scanning.

Gear/Film Rb67 help
galleryJust got an rb67 proSD yesterday today I shot developed and scanned my first roll of cinestill 400D. The results are subpar to say the least. I accidentally opened the back before I had the roll fully wrapped up so hoping that’s the reason for the light leaks. But why are the images so blurry and the edges so soft and out of focus everything was shot handheld between f8-f16 and 125-400 shutter speed. Does my lens need serviced or is this user error? Any help/advice is welcomed and appreciated thank you!

Scanning Odd stripe when I scan negatives - Epson Perfection 4490
Recently, any time I scan color negatives on my Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner, most of the scans end up with this odd strip through the center of them. Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it?
I don't see any kind of similar stripe when I scan black & white film. It only happens with color.

Gear/Film My first “new” film camera
galleryI’ve been using my dad’s old Canon AE-1 for over 10 years and decided it was time to upgrade. After some research I settled on an F2 and have been looking around for a good one.
Saw this listed on marketplace this morning with a 55mm f3.5 and 35mm f2 and went and picked it up. I can’t believe this is a 50 year old camera. Amazing condition, couldn’t be happier.

Discussion General Inquiry - Tokyo Trip
Hi everyone!
I'm a beginner in photography (I only take photos with my smartphone, lol), but something about film photography has really piqued my interest.
I'm heading to Tokyo in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone knows where I can window shop (and maybe buy) used but good-quality 35mm film cameras that are beginner-friendly. One model I've been eyeing is the Minolta Hi-Matic AFD. My budget is capped at $100 or ¥15,000 - this is the max price of used Minolta Hi-matic AFD's in my country.
I'm open for recommendation of other models!
I currently have a Kodak Ektar H35, but I didn’t really look into the cons of this model before buying it—I only saw the positive reviews. The quality feels like a 50-50 chance per shot, lol.
Thanks in advance! I hope I can get some helpful recommendations!
