I was about to sell my AMG, then it saved us from a serious accident

A little story for you all....

I have a 2023 E53 Coupe which I was going to sell for something a bit more sporty (718 Cayman GTS), I even had a buyer lined up.

Then in what was going to be one of my final trips in the car, we had a crazy incident on the road. Made all the more serious by the fact that it was one of the rare times that I had 4 people in the car. Basically we were driving down a totally straight stretch of highway just after dark when the car directly in front of us, for no apparent reason and with no warning, does a sharp right turn and blasts head on into the barrier at full speed. It bounced hard and the mangled car came sliding back into the road just metres in front of my car which was still going at highway speed.

It all happened so fast and I had no chance to react, the only thing I remember doing was trying to brake but we were about to smash into the other car. That's when my car essentially took over, the seatbelts squeezed us into our seats and it pulled a maneuver straight out of F1. There's no way I would've had the skill or reaction time to swerve the way we did, I wouldn't have even known the car was capable of handling like that. Out into the other lane and straight back into ours in an instant, just enough to completely clear the wreckage of the poor guy in front of us. I'm certain that if we were in any other car without these active steering safety systems, we would've been in a serious accident. The whole thing happened before I even had time to think about checking whether it was safe to swerve into the left lane. I barely started braking and, if I remember correctly, the car even overrode that and sped up to make the maneuver in time. It was truly crazy and all 4 of us in the car were extremely surprised and impressed to have escaped the situation unscathed.

It made me seriously reconsider selling the car because I found out that Porsche doesn't offer this kind of feature even in their newest models. I recognize that this kind of situation might never happen again in my life, but what if it does? I know what car I want to be in. If this kind of tech is available, which can legitimately safe your life and you can afford it, why drive anything else? I know not everyone agrees and I didn't either until I saw it in action first hand, but now this is one of my main considerations for picking which car I want to drive.

So I'm definitely keeping the Mercedes and I encourage anyone shopping for one to pick a car with the full driver assistance package.

Obligatory car pic

I wish I had dashcam footage, when I first bought the car I even got a USB stick to use the built in camera, but sadly the mercedes dashcam app is not available in my region for whatever reason. If anyone has recommendations to sort that out please let me know.

Saying Goodbye

It's been a fun few years in the sub. Thanks for all the amazing photos and trash talking. But today, I said goodbye to my GLA45 for a 3-row SUV for the kiddos.

Harass and support one another in good health.

Question High Mileage 2001 S55 AMG reliability?

Hey all, recently discovered a 2001 S55 AMG for sale near me with service records going back to 2013. Thing is that it has 203k miles. I’m aware that the M113 and 722.6 are considered quite reliable, but I’d like to see if anyone here has owned one with similar mileage so I can get a better idea of what it’s like to own one. It’s been coilover swapped so no suspension headaches. I’m only left with about $1200 after my monthly expenses so I’d also like to ask if it’s realistic to maintain one of these on that income if I did the work myself. Thanks in advance!

Would this carfax concern you?

Upvotes

After reviewing the CARFAX, I noticed a few potential concerns with the vehicle’s history - 2023 MERCEDES-BENZ GLC 43 AMG and wanted to see if anyone else would find these red flags troubling. Below is a breakdown of the issues along with the timeline—your thoughts on whether these are deal-breakers would be appreciated.

https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory/ar20/PYIVHZdSp-WIc4TDCUqdzOYxAj2T8gHppkwxcc4FFzktxWss3yaMnKsOwUIZhQXnKBkD6thAg52XQHBhsk-Nhj-2WdZNzikYaHs

1. Electrical System Issues

  • Timeline:
    • June 13, 2024 (16,414 miles): Electrical system checked; radio/sound system reprogrammed.
    • September 12, 2024 (18,657 miles): Engine/powertrain computer/module reprogrammed.
  • Concern: Multiple reprogramming sessions may point to underlying instability in the electronics, which could lead to recurring, costly repairs if the root cause isn’t resolved

2. Tire-Related Problems

  • Likelihood of Recurrence: 3/5 (Moderate)
  • Timeline:
    • May 20, 2023 (5,269 miles): One tire replaced.
    • December 8, 2023 (11,460 miles): Two tires replaced.
    • May 29, 2024 (16,071 miles): Four tires balanced.
    • June 13, 2024 (16,414 miles): One tire replaced.
    • December 24th, 2024 (19,771 miles): Two tires replaced.
  • Concern: Four tire replacements/balances in 13 months suggest alignment or suspension issues, leading to uneven wear and potential recurring costs if not addressed

3. Brake and Fluid Changes

  • Timeline:
    • May 29, 2024 (16,071 miles): Rear brake pads and brake fluid replaced.
  • Concern: Early brake wear could be due to aggressive driving or specific conditions but is less likely to recur with proper maintenance.

Would these points concern you, or do they seem manageable with proper inspections and maintenance?

Question Best all-season performance tire with good ride quality?

Upvotes

2017 C43 Coupe. Current tires are Continental extremecontacts with 50% live left, so I’m gonna be shopping for new tires in the next couple of months. Looking for a solid set of all seasons, where I live gets a lot of rain but also very warm in summer and not much snow (season lows of -5 in winter). Looking for something to also boost the ride quality of my 19 inch AMG rims.

Thanks!

W206 Radiator going full speed, engine check light on

Hi, just as the title says.

A few minutes back I started the car and the engine light kept shining.

Also a extreme noise was coming from under the hood - like a vacuum cleaner. I suspect this is the radiator going full power for no frickin reason.

I recently went to a car wash, meaning the water was spraying on the car and possibly through the front grill as well. Can this be the cause for this?

I will certainly go to dealership tomorrow, but is this something anyone here has encountered and how was it possibly solved?

Thanks.

Question SLK vs SL vs CL 55 amg

So I need your help in deciding what car I should get as a weekend cruiser. I am in no way an extreme driver that wants to push corners hard and all of that but I do like some occasional fast drives. (If it makes sense) The cars in question are all M113 cars the SLK is the only non-kompressor car. So as far as I know these engines - if well maintained - are bulletproof, the only drawbacks are the ABC on the CL and SL, and the SBC on the SL. The cost of repairing this is huge but I am well prepaired for that. And also SL and CL are quite heavy compared to the SLK so how do they handle on the road. The only drawback on the SLK is the lack of horsepower compared to other two models. So in conclusion which one would you go for and why?

Question AMG Performance Exhaust problem

Hey! New to the group. 2017 c63s coupe with performance exhaust. When I press the button to open the valves, the central/mid section valve operates but both rear valves don't move. They seem to be constantly open; should I be checking fuses first? If so, does anyone know what fuse number controls those valves?

No EML and no codes showing whatsoever using a OBD reader.

Any help appreciated!

(w209 clk55/m113.987)Around a month ago i made a post asking what a rattling sound could be and many people said it could be one of the pulleys. Idk how i missed it when i looked over but the idler pulley was in 2 pieces lol. thankfully installing a new one only takes 10ish minutes but i found it funny that it was clean in 2 pieces

i’m having a hard time find affordable rims in the right size for my car. the only ones i found on ebay are over $1200 per wheel. the sizes are 9Jx19, 11Jx20. i can’t even find reproduction ones. asked a coupe of rims and tire shop and they say they don’t have anything in my size.

Question ‘20 GT63 Error Codes

70k miles

Car just got out of the shop.

New upper oil pan, motor mount, water pumps, fuel line.

Drove like a beast for 50 miles. Perfect.

Stopped at the beach for a photo. It’s really bright and sunny direct mid-morning sun on the car.

Start it and get these errors. I drive 5 miles. Stop, turn it off, get out and lock it. Get back in, start it up and zero errors. Nothing.

Drive another 100 miles with stops and starts. No issues.

Any ideas?
