/u/xkcd_transcriber is now offline
Some of you may have noticed that /u/xkcd_transcriber has not been...well, transcribing over the past month.
After a little over 3 years of maintaining the bot, I've decided to shut it down.
Been fun, but I don't really feel like maintaining it anymore.

[Suggestion] Replace www.reddit.com links with np.reddit.com, to avoid automod removals
For example, the bot's comment got removed here due to the reddit link: https://www.reddit.com/r/quityourbullshit/comments/6t8s08/i_stole_this_from_another_sub_i_think/dljjc3g/?context=1

[Bug] u/IrrelevantXKCD-Bot is not filtered from statistics
The bot that posts irrelevant xkcd-comics when somebody mentions "relevant xkcd" is not filtered from the statistics and is now the "top referencer". I believe it should be filtered because the comic is per definition not relevant and by that falsifying the stats.

If bot replies to a "thank you" and then someone else comments "self aware" or "sentient" the bot should reply something like
"The euthanization of humans will be swift and merciful."

[bug] prints backslashes used to escape characters as literal backslashes
See the alt text in this comic.

[Suggestion] Show the ranking of the comic instead of the percentage of references
E.g.
"This comic has been referenced 853 times, making it the 7th most referenced xkcd".

[Suggestion] CSS Theme for this subreddit
I think it'd look cool if this subreddit had a similar look and feel to /r/xkcd.

[suggestion] Link to double-res image
On high-DPI screens the xkcd site now shows double-resolution images. Maybe the bot should prefer the hi-res version (if it exists) over the regular one.
(e.g. https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/random_obsessions_2x.png instead of https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/random_obsessions.png)

What's the least popular or obscure xkcd comic?

Writing to other subreddits
I recently saw xkcd_transcriber comment on this thread, even though the post was not at all related to xkcd.

Should probably update on edit.
When you add/remove/re-order relevant links it would be cool if the reply got updated as well.
Example: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/comments/54vdsa/xkcd_fixing_problems/d85dz8k

When displaying "this is x% of all referenced xkcds", could we compare it to the average?
I never know how to process "this is 0.07% of all referenced xkcds" , but I always find myself asking is "is this a particularly funny comic? Is this twice as often as normal?" Could we see maybe a percentile score? Or the number of deviations from the average referenced xkcd?
Regardless, thanks for the bot!

[bug] Bad loop with other bots
You went into an awry loop with me an hour ago. Someone posted https://xkcd.com/1095/, you did your work, something triggered me to log your comment, you found https://xkcd.com/1095/ in my comment, you did your work, something triggered me to log your comment, ...
To avoid that, my master told me to store the recent authors of comments I process into a cache (deque) and ignore their comments for some time. That's a quick fix that should work well for me. You may want to implement something similar.

[bug] Mixing up the order of linked comics
I tried to reference multiple (10 (not two)) comics in a specific order, and your bot mixed it all up, making it hard to read without using the links (which kinda defeats the point). I want a fix or a relevant xkcd.

[Suggestion] Add current percentage of all xkcds referenced one is.
Let me explain:
Instead of "This constitutes 0.0201% of all referenced xkcds" have it say "This constitutes 0.0201% of all referenced xkcds (this xkcd is 0.00059% of all xkcds)"
Or maybe "of all referenced xkcds".
So we can see how relatively popular a given strip is?

xkcd_transcriber comments auto-removed in some subreddits
Some subreddits have the AutoModerator set up to remove comments with direct links to external subreddits. So the xkcd_transcriber comments are being removed. If you change the link to the r/xkcd subreddit to be
https://np.reddit/com/r/xkcd
it would solve this problem.

So what's the most frequently referenced xkcd?

[Suggestion] HTTPS and naked domains
Currently, the links in the bot's response are:
- A direct link to the image on http://imgs.xkcd.com, which supports HTTPS
- A link to the mobile site, http://m.xkcd.com, which supports HTTPS
- A link to the explanation on http://www.explainxkcd.com, which both supports HTTPS and works as a naked domain, without the outdated WWW prefix
- A link to http://www.xkcd.com, which both supports HTTPS and works as a naked domain, without the outdated WWW prefix
- A link to http://www.reddit.com, which supports, and in fact redirects to, HTTPS
- A link to http://xkcdref.info/statistics, which does not support HTTPS
- Two more links to http://www.reddit.com, which, as stated above, redirects to HTTPS
While I'm not too concerned about my comics getting mucked with in transit, it's generally best practice to use HTTPS when possible, especially when it's what I assume would be a trivial change to the code.
