Ask Vancouver “Subtle” not so subtle scamming at Whistler restaurants/stores
Been at Whistler about three days now and though my family and I have loved it, we have noticed that an abnormal amount of service workers here have seemed to “accidentally” add something onto our bills/receipts that we didn’t order or buy. This happened the first place we went, Longhorn Saloon, were our total was about 20-30 more than expected, but since it was our first place and the conversion rate is different we didn’t really think too much of it, though my father asked the waitress for the itemized receipt (which she never brought). Next we went to Blacks Pub, where the waitress added a random Stella to our bill despite nobody even ordering beer. That night our waiter at a different restaurant added a Chardonnay onto our bill that we had already paid for at the bar since we sat there before our reservation.
This has also happened at stores, starting with our ski rental place charging us $80 dollars for three helmets after we told them multiple times we didn’t need them (they didn’t offer us a physical receipt and we were only sent a digital like an hour after we left). And finally, the most egregious exmaple, at a souvenir shop we bought like 20ish dollars worth of post cards and stickers and the girl at the front said our total was 36 dollars! What??? I said that didn’t seem right, and started reading the prices out in front of her, and she quickly blurted out without a thought or having to rescan anything “oh something different was scanned, your total is actually $23” as if the actual total was right in front of her, then she quickly darted her eyes to the back without saying anything like “thanks for coming” like she did to the other customers.
We wanted to believe it was a coincidence or a few honest mistakes but at this point it’s just happened too much that it’s almost comedic. I’m at lunch right now and they’ve brought out like 3 dishes that weren’t even for our table and we’re now making bets into whether they add it onto the bill.
I know we go to touristy places and we are Americans and they all hate Americans yada yada but this just seems really dishonest, and I didn’t expected it in a nice place like this. Has this happened to anyone else?

QUESTION Any idea why theres only one ski out on Blackcomb despite all the runs bieng in condition?
Is it that there isn't enough Piston Bullies? Actual grooming staff? Or just cost cutting from Whistler Blackcomb? If the ski hill cared about safety they wouldn't force everyone to take the same crowded run down the hill where numerous collisions have happened. Anyone in the department know whats going on?

Ask Vancouver Snowy/wet chairlift seats?
So it seems to be a ‘thing’ at WB that the lifties no longer sweep the seats on a snowy day. Is this common practice now at all mountains, or is it just a WB thing? And, why? Poor training? Vail doesn’t care?

QUESTION Anyone have a hannukiah they can lend/where to buy one up here.
Got up to Whistler and realized we didn't have one :(. Is either someone willing to lend an extra or know where we can get one up here?

Ask Vancouver Best area for a family holiday
Hi! My large extended family from Australia is looking to do a Christmas ski holiday in Canada in 2026 (to visit some of the family who are moving to Toronto).
We would want to book a big chalet that is walking distance to the village and also ski in ski out( close to easy runs). A few of the older family members probably won’t ski so being walking distance to the village is important.
What neighbourhood in whistler would be best for this. Or would big white or any other resorts be better for this purpose. We want a resort that has a fun village vibe for those that don’t ski.
Thanks!

Ask Vancouver Accommodations for a family with a beginner skier
Planning a trip to Whistlers mid April. Husband and I are intermediate/advanced skiers. Our daughter is a true beginner. She has skied one day and was skiiing ok on a flat green with the help of an edgie wedgie by the end of the day.
At Whistlers, we are planning to put her in lessons most days. Where is a good place to stay convenient to the slopes where the lessons take place? Also a place she would be capable of skiing in/out of at her beginner level.

Ask Vancouver Eagles/Cowboys
Any recommendations for a bar that will have Sunday's NFL game on and be Philly friendly? My 13 yo is a die hard Eagles fan and I am worried about him mouthing off if we're surrounded by Texans😂

Ask Vancouver Good for beginners?
Going to Whistler Blackcomb in a few months, and I'm normally a "green" guy. I broke my leg a few years ago at another place on a blue, so I'm a little nervous, but dont want to just never ski again. Will it be ok for me?

Ask Vancouver Week after New Year - how is it?
Hey,
German here. Considering going to visit friends in the Vancouver area and going skiing with the family to Whistler again in Jan 2026, specificially Jan 3 to Jan 10. Is this a crowded week? As far as I know there is no school break in North America anymore. In the Alps, the week from Christmas to NYE is crazy but the week after sees pretty moderate crowds as only some regions have school break (including us luckily) and everything/accomodation is like 30% less expensive.
Thanks for some insight!

QUESTION Where are all the people?
It was rather empty today on the hill. Ski school is saying lesson bookings are way way down. Boxing day is historically the busiest day of the year and conditions were amazing! But seemed like not that many people were out there. Where are all the people at? Did day lift pass prices or hotel costs drive everybody away?

QUESTION Pow day strategy
What’s your strategy for maximizing the number of good turns in pow and minimizing waiting for the lift?
All too often I find myself waiting in the Harmony line for an hour while they work on avy mitigation, while seeing everyone having a great time over on 7th, but not sure if it’s the same thing over there

Ask Vancouver Vancouver bootfitter recs?
I know the whistler and the north Van places I would go to, but I have a friend in town who would like to buy a good pair before coming up to visit. Can anyone recommend a Vancouver based bootfitter that they like?

Ask Vancouver Shuttle from Blackcomb Way to either Whistler or Blackcomb?
Happy Holidays y'all!
We've just arrived at our AirBnB located in a little subdivision off of Blackcomb Way called Treeline we are trying to figure out how to get to the slopes via shuttle. If I'm reading it right it looks like the number 5 shuttle passes by Treeline on Blackcomb Way every 15 minutes? Is that right?
It seems stupid to drive from our rental the 1.4km to a parking lot, but it would be even stupider to be standing on a street corner with skis and poles waiting for a shuttle that never comes.

Ask Vancouver Ski Lessons & Neck Injury
We will be in Whistler from Dec 30 to Jan 5, 2024. Even though we have lived on the Lower Mainland for a few years, we have never tried skiing. I have booked typical touristy activities. Would it be a good idea to try ski lessons for men in their early 40s and women in their late 30s? The wife is scared of all the bad ski stories as she had a neck surgery in 2015 for a tumour and has screws & plates in the cervical spine. She is active, runs, lifts weights and is nervous about trying Ski lessons.

Ask Vancouver Bagpiping Christmas - New Year
Hello Everyone,
I know that over the next few days there are likely to be many celebrations held and so I wanted to put myself out there and share that I’m very willing to accept any requests for bagpipes to be played wherever you are in whistler.
I have a broad repertoire and can focus on more traditional songs if preferred (I.e. auld lang syne, highland cathedral, amazing grace, flower of Scotland, Scotland the brave etc.) or could play more complex tunes (i.e. pumpkins fancy)
I also have the ability to learn fast so if there were something festive preferred then that could be sorted (within reason).
If you’d like to request me then please feel free to contact me!
My email for this purpose is: EventPiping@gmail.com
My phone number can also be given upon request. Reddit message should be possible as well?
If there happen to be no requests though or you are here just to read then I hope you all have a wonderful set of celebrations.
