Apple TV+ autoplaying the trailer for Severance Season 2 before episodes of Season 1 Discussion

Currently watching season 1 of Severance with my girlfriend - I've seen it before but she hasn't. Last night when watching they autoplayed the trailer for season 2 before episode 4! Luckily she wasn't quite paying attention yet and I managed to skip it before she got spoiled, but it's pretty crazy that it's possible for that to happen, especially because that trailer has a lot of big plot spoilers in it. I know it's possible to come across a trailer in the wild and get spoiled accidentally that way, but I can't believe that Apple allowed it to play on episodes of the same show. The only possible reason I can think of is that we were watching on my account which has watched all of Severance before, but even still surely they would prevent it just in case.

So just a warning to the community if you're watching with someone who hasn't seen it, be ready on that skip button!

Damn, thanks for the heads up. Been planning on rewatching season 1 next week, and have been avoiding everything season 2 like the plague.

Obviously they want to market the show, but I’ve never been a fan of trailers for subsequent seasons.

This is as ridiculously awful as when Netflix spoils big plot moments through episode thumbnails.

Do you have any examples for that? I’ve been using Netflix since forever and have never gotten spoiled through episode thumbnails. I believe that it’s possible, but I’m curious if you have any specific examples.

I don’t have specific examples but it’s been talked here and also if you Google it it’s all over internet. I think it used to happen mostly a few years ago and maybe they’ve changed the thumbnail system for Jo spoiling anymore.

Also, heads up to avoid the "spoiler free" Verge review of the 2nd season. Before you know it the author describes details of the first episode you probably don't want to know before watching it.

Is it possible it’s playing because you already watched S1?

If it makes you feel any better I heard season 2 is completely boring. I’ll watch it someday to see for myself but in no rush

I noticed the same thing. I started my 100th rewatch last night of For All Mankind and the Severance trailer played and it had a huge spoiler in it. Definitely beware.

It’s playing on live tv as well. We were watching the news and the trailer played. Was surprised Apple revealed one of the biggest spoilers of S1.

Wait, they’re promoting the show on mainstream media?! They’re actually marketing it?!

Yep! I’ve seen at least 2 different trailers while watching live tv. Saw a different one this morning where Helly is talking to her innie. I was shocked not only at the marketing mainstream but the spoiler reveal.

They've started doing that with a few things lately. Last year Idris Elba did an interview on one of Australia's flagship news and current affairs programs to promote Hijack, and Blake Crouch and the Dark Matter showrunner whose name I forget had a 15 minute spot on national breakfast radio

same thing with Slow Horses...may they are trying to encourage us by telling us there will be another season

nothing worse than getting into a show and it's canceled after 1 season

Companies like Apple will develop their marketing strategies as if every single user/customer has bought all the latest products and hardware (the most expensive version), is always up to date, and has consumed 100% of the available contents.

That’s annoying and they should fix that to prevent it form happening. Saying this as a person who dislikes spoilers and avoids like the plague for the most part…

I’ve always had a problem with Apple TV plus and spoilers ever since it started. For movies they show the entire plot. For episode descriptions, they tell you everything that happens. Even thumbnails give away crucial info before you even start watching (yes I know you can change this)

My partner was just about start S1, so that we could watch S2 together, and that spoiler trailer popped up when we were about to finish the last episode of Shrinking. I too was able to quickly skip after I realized what they were saying.

I am completely baffled that marketing for this show would release this much detail.

For one, I don't even want to see anything for S2 myself, and two, if you're hoping to bring more fans, at least give them the chance to experience it the same as we did, by not having any spoilers.
