What would make your Ideal Star Trek game?
This will be a long post, so TL;DR, what would you want to see in your ideal Star Trek or Legally Distinct Space Voyage™ Game? I'll get into detail with my thoughts below but feel free to skip and just write whatever comes to mind!
I've been itching for an interactive experience that sells both the short and long term arcs of Star Trek shows - episodic adventures with a broader crew management/community simulator - but nothing really checks as many boxes as I'd like. Here's a few that come to mind with strengths and weaknesses in reaching the Star Trek fantasy. This list is not exhaustive.
- Mass Effect (franchise)
- Strengths
- Extremely good crew dynamics. Downtime between "episodes" has a nearly identical feel to Star Trek.
- Diverse political landscape. Diplomacy and galactic powers are huge for setting up and resolving plots. Tons of unique cultures that are thoroughly fleshed out.
- Strong Ship Identity. The Normandy and Normandy SR2 have a similar iconic and instantly recognizable aesthetic and legacy.
- Weaknesses
- Militarized. Shepard is a soldier first and a captain a (close) second. The Systems Alliance closely resembles modern-day militaries rather than a science-forward society.
- Action-focused. Most problems (esp. after ME1) are solved with guns and infiltration missions rather than the ingenuity of the crew and ship.
- Strengths
- FTL
- Strengths
- Ship Micromanagement. Having fine control over weapons systems, crew, and repairs feels very similar to any of the combat crises the Star Trek crews face.
- Weaknesses
- Combat-focused. Most resources and time is spent preparing for and weathering combat scenarios with less focus on crew management or diplomacy.
- Strengths
- Sunless Skies
- Strengths
- Complex Story Engine. SS can introduce and weave multiple story threads through each other in overlapping and interesting ways. Every situation has several different ways to approach and conclude it.
- Crew familiarity. Not every crew member has a bespoke story, but many have unique quest threads and personalities, as well as opportunities and risks for even inviting them aboard.
- Weaknesses
- Dark tone. Whether it's resource scarcity, corrupt systems, or gazing too long into the cosmic abyss, SS's tone is far closer to Lovecraftian horror than the general optimism of Star Trek.
- Strengths
After these three contenders for a Startreklike, what pillars of Trek stories feel the most necessary to sell the fantasy? What game mechanics might feel right for the setting? Here are some of my thoughts.
- Crew Management
- A captain is nothing without a crew. I imagine a system similar to XCOM, Crusader Kings, Shadow of Mordor, etc. where randomly-generated crew members will gain experience and traits as the ship navigates encounters until they are ready for promotion. The player can then elevate them to higher and higher positions in the ship as the character gradually gets fleshed out via semi-random story encounters. That ensign that managed to seal off a hull breach may end up being the ship's Number One many hours down the road. Perhaps things like Holodeck training could add positive traits or remove negative ones.
- Diplomacy
- While difficult to implement in a game as granular as I'd want it, finding the peaceful solution as priority one is a must for the genre. I imagine a system similar to the cancelled Bass Reeves Can't Die (inspired by Oblivion's dialogue minigame) where it's more about maintaining a balance of pressure and concessions based than it is about the specifics of what you're saying. Different species and events have different goals for success.
- Cargo and Passengers
- This is where it might need to differ from the Star Trek formula. Instead of self-contained episodes that have a distinct beginning and end to (most) conflicts, each storyline would overlap beginnings and ends may affect each other in some ways. While delivering ambassadors from rival factions to a peace conference, their violent outbursts may draw the focus of security and apply a penalty to detecting the Romulan infiltrator masquerading as a crew member.
- Combat as a last, but available, resort
- Combat should be costly but not impossible to drive players towards peaceful solutions where possible. I imagine using the diplomacy system modified for reaction speed and resource allocation for ship-to-ship battles instead of a tactical angle like FTL.
What do you think? What would make the most Star Trek game for you, even if it isn't Star Trek?

Kelby
I honestly think he got a bit of a raw deal. Trip transfers off Enterprise and he gets promoted. Archer even said what a great job he was doing, and the minute that Trip decides he’d rather stay he gets his new promotion yanked away. I honestly think Archer should’ve spoken to Captain Hernandez and let Kelby take the vacant chief engineers spot on Columbia. I’ll admit he had a chip on his shoulder, but a lot of that was trying to live up to Trip’s legacy and everyone comparing him to Tucker. If he had been allowed to transfer to the brand new NX-02,he could’ve made his own name for himself.

If you could have a romantic relationship with any Star Trek character, who would it be?
I’d say Hoshi Sato!

Is a Star Trek version of Andor in the cards?
Or more accurately: will we get some kind of Star Trek that is genuinely prestige TV? (Skip to the bottom for a TL;DR.)
I've been into Trek my whole life and it's probably my favorite scifi series. It's silly here and there, and its lows are very low (Threshold, etc.) but its highs are quite high (In the Pale Moonlight, etc.) and it’s overall fun. Imo it’s never really achieved prestige TV levels though.
Star Wars was even sillier than Trek prior to Rouge 1 and Andor, but with Andor imo (and many critics agree) that it has finally achieved an actual prestige TV series. It’s extremely well written, acted, directed, designed, etc. It’s dark but it’s still hopeful. If you take the SW out of it, it’d still be a great show. If the SW name wasn't attached to it and the competition wasn't so stiff in the years s01 was released, it would probably be sweeping awards.
It seems like Trek was maybe aiming for grown up prestige TV with Picard (hiring Chabon to write s1, etc.) but the general consensus seems to be that PIC s1 and 2 were misses overall. Imo they were poorly written and trying too hard to be “dark” while still too silly to be taken anything approaching seriously. I still haven’t watched s3. I heard it’s better, but more like TNG fanservice.
DS9’s best / most serious episodes might be the closest to prestige TV in Trek. In the Pale Moonlight is basically classic literature levels of good. But those are interspersed with stuff like "hop along home" and petty vulcan captains wanting to crush Sisko in baseball. Those episodes are hilarious and campy fun, but it's definitely not prestige TV. The best episodes are amazing but they are surrounded by filler and campy episodes so the experience is a bit weighed down by them.
S31 seems like more camp but with a darker edge. I’ll watch it but I don’t think it will be what I’m hoping for.
Just to clarify: I like camp, cheese, YA stuff, unserious ‘just for fun’ stuff as well as prestige style things—otherwise I wouldn’t like Trek. I just also really enjoy prestige TV as well and would personally love to see ST produce some. I’m just not sure if it’s possible, or if it’s something the fanbase even wants. It seems like people are a bit burned out on darker shows after DIS and PIC missed the mark for many. FWIW I love LD and SNW for what they are, but it would just be so great to get an Andor style show to compliment them.
TL;DR: Do you think ST might ever produce something like Andor? Do you think it should? Do you think the setting lends itself to that? If so, what would your preference for a setting and characters be? Something like Star Trek: Garak or something brand new?

1cardassians should have heated uniforms
I've seem several people mention that Cardassians appear to be a reptilian species, which is why Terok Nor was kept too hot and why Cardassians complain that it's so cold in DS9. If so, they're probably cold-blooded. So why don't their uniforms have heating systems? Surely, once they made contact with more space!faring species, they found that the vast majority are warm-blooded and the cold (to them) put them at a disadvantage.

I dreamed last night of a Jeffrey Combs convention
It was so weird but so nice! Tons of people came out to support him. All cosplayers were dressed up as his Star Trek characters so there was a sea of Weyouns, Brunts and Shrans.
They had side rooms showing all of his films, one was dedicated to all of his animated characters so they had JLU and various cartoon episodes on loop.
Wil Wheaton was hosting panels with Combs' fellow cast members on various film and TV projects, dressed like Herbert West. There was a DS9 panel where Dorn, Visitor, Shimerman, Farrell, and a couple directors talked about the joys of working with him. People who called in online with questions could have their voice put through a box shaped like Agimus.
When Combs came out on the last day to roaring applause and standing ovation, for some reason he was dressed as Harriman Gray from Babylon 5 (I'd watched it a couple nights ago so it must have been fresh in my mind). The only question I recall before I woke up was someone asking him to share some happy memories working with Auberjonois.

Star Trek: TNG, 'Reverie'. A Star Trek fan comic I made.
Star Trek: The Next Generation. 'Reverie'.
This is a short TNG fan-comic I made, trying to focus on capturing the 'feel' of an episode of The Next Generation, and give it a kind of 'lost episode' vibe.
Be interested to hear what you guys think, and If you think I've been successful in capturing the TNG feel.

Do you think this is a good watch order to get a grasp of the franchise?
Hi!
This year I have promised myself to continue watching the most famous scifi series (finished Babylon 5 and BSG)
For Star Trek, as big as it is and as a first timer, I’ve decided to narrow a bit the scope and watch TNG full run, and only TOS Movies to get a grasp of how original Star Trek felt
The rest of the Trek series will get on stand by until I watch some other pending shows I have (Stargate SG1 and the Expanse)
After reading some info in this subreddit and some thinking, the order I’ve plotted is as follows:
Motion Picture
Space Seed TOS episode
Wrath of Khan
Search for Spock
Voyage Home
Final frontier
Undiscovered Country
Star Trek TNG 1-7
Generations
First contact
Insurrection
Nemesis
Picard seasons 1 and 3 (watch YouTube summary of 2)
Is this reasonable to get a first grasp of TOS and then TNG full run? What will you change?
Thanks in advance!

Does anyone have news of 60th anniversary box sets?
I’m itching to completely upgrade and expand my Star Trek collection, (I have the DVDs of TOS, TNG and DS9 plus the blu rays of the reboot movies) but I resisted getting the blu rays this past Prime Day/Black Friday because the 60th anniversary is just around the corner.
If I am to ignore this year’s Prime Day/Black Friday deals, I need some certainty that I’m not waiting in vain.
Has anyone heard anything or are there any industry insiders with hints they’re willing to drop?
Or should I be snapping up the bargains as I spot them?
Any solid info or just wild conjectures appreciated.

Friend wants to watch her first episode.
Hi, mine friend wants to watch Star Trek for first time. If there were three episodes to introduce them (least prior knowledge necessary) to show her the shows optimistic philosophy what would you recommend?

TOS straight to SNW?
I’m wanting to watch all of Star Trek and become a diehard fan
I’ve already seen Below Decks (S 1 and 2)
But I’m watching The Original Series After I’m finish with it should I go to Strange new worlds because I’ve heard that it’s the same characters like Spock and Kirk, or is there a list I should follow

Enterprise 310 "Similitude" - Let's talk about Scott Bakula's performance
Connor Trinneer gets the lion's share of focus whenever this episode is discussed. As well he should. But for this thread, I'd like to shine the spotlight on Scott Bakula and Captain Archer.
I know I'm not alone in feeling that Bakula does not rank very highly in the history of Star Trek lead actors. Throughout 303 "Extinction" and Archer Alien's antics, I felt nothing but cringe and embarrassment for good ol' Scotty boy. I've always loved the guy, but he just didn't seem to have the gravitas needed for this type of role.
Until "Similitude" came along.
Trip and Phlox have several scenes that make me cry uncontrollably. But it's Archer who gets me to mutter, "Goddamn." From the intensity of that determination/promise/threat to kill Sim, to the weariness in his eyes and entire face during the funeral, this was simply Scott Bakula's best performance to date.
I'm in the middle of an entire franchise rewatch. This is one of those episodes that simply forces me to take a break and step away for the night. So damn good.

Spoilers for season 7 of Deep Space 9. First of all, wonderful acting all around, now...
Laas is for sure dead right? Do was the virus carrier. He linked with Laas. Laas left before the cure was found to go god knows where. So he's for sure a pile of founder flakes on some moon right?

John Billingsley appreciation post
I'm watching Enterprise for the first time in my chronological watch/rewatch of all of Trek. I'm particularly struck by how John Billingsley plays Dr. Phlox. There's a quality to his voice that is soothing, and he's just enjoyable to listen to. Anyone know if he's ever done audiobook narration?

help me identify this star trek holodeck episode
i remember a star trek episode involving a klingon (i think), falling in love with or interacting with someone of another race, and that was considered taboo in klingon cultute. i remember a scene where they went to the holodeck and danced, i think it was in new york and raining, and then they were discovered by another klingon. the alien of the other race was shot/killed in some way, and i distinctly remember a scene where the second klingon called for the holodeck arch and left the first klingon in the rain.
i’ve seen every star trek ever, the only series i can rule out that this episode isn’t from are prodigy, picard, strange new worlds, lower decks, animated and original series.

What to watch?!
Hi everyone! I’ve always wanted to get into Star Trek. And I figured with Disney making it so tough to enjoy Star Wars I’d finally make the plunge. What do you guys recommend to start out with? And what comes after? I’d love to hear from you!🖖

Should Voyager have concluded with a few episodes of them back home?
Right off the bat, I’m sorry if this has been asked before. Did a quick search before posting and nothing came up, so: here goes.
I just did a series run of Voyager after not having watched it in almost 15 years or so, and then only seeing about half of the episodes.
Overall, I liked it but the last episode Endgame was just so abrupt with the ending of them going to Earth after the action with the Borg.
I feel like there should have been a few episodes of the fallout, as it were, of them returning. Maybe Tom hashing out problems with his father, B’Elanna reconciling with her own dad, Seven having to adjust to life on Earth, Janeway being debriefed on her actions, et al. I think there was some stories there to tell.
Does anyone know if this was ever under discussion?
Many thanks for any insight!
