Read this before you post here
Welcome to r/SALEM, and thanks for your interest in posting here. Before you do, please be aware that — like many city/area-focused subreddits — we have some topics that come up very frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people down-voting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.
If you’re about to post about any of the following, please first use the search function (right up in the upper right hand corner, if you’re viewing this on the web!) to see if something similar has been posted recently. If it has, please contribute to that thread rather than starting a new one.
Frequently posted things:
Did you hear that boom/firework/gunshot/weird noise?
This comes up a lot; frequently folks are concerned they may have heard gunshots and/or fireworks and are looking for reassurance. First, know that it probably was not a gun shot. There is a very good chance that it was fireworks, or somebody with an altered muffler, or, if you also noticed a power outage or blip at the same time, a transformer exploding. Second, if you’re actually seriously concerned about gunshots, you should probably be contacting the police, not Reddit. Third, if you live near a vineyard (and, if you live anywhere in the Salem area, you do!), you should be aware that vineyards use acoustic devices — basically massive noisemakers — to scare birds away from grape vines. This is especially frequent in the late fall, near harvest time.
OMG what is that smell?
Salem, and many surrounding areas, lie in the Willamette River Valley. Due to the topography of the area, we experience temperature inversions) with some regularity. An inversion occurs when a layer of warmer, more elevated air overlies a lower, cooler air layer. Effectively, this traps the air in the valley underneath the warmer layer, which means that smoke, vehicle exhaust, rotting vegetation smells, etc., cannot escape. That’s probably what you’re smelling.
Is there any good <insert cuisine here> in Salem? Where can I buy <thing> in Salem?
These types of threads come up fairly often. The restaurant scene in Salem is decent, but not exceptionally dynamic — places do not close all that often, and new places don’t open all that often either. If somebody has asked this question within the last couple months (again, use that search function!), the answers that they got are almost certainly still relevant.
Why is the train stopped or blowing its horn?
There are a number of freight lines that route trains through Salem. Occasionally, they will need to stop to onload or offload cars, which may result in a longer-than-usual wait time at a crossing. This is normal.
Sometimes, unfortunately, there are train-versus-pedestrian collisions. When those happen, the train will need to be stopped for an extended period of time to allow police to investigate the scene.
Finally, while many portions of Salem are zoned (and signed) as “no train horn” areas, it remains at the discretion of the train engineer as to whether or not to sound their horn, and some of them, well, tooting their horn just toots their horn.
What’s going on with all the cops?
We don’t have any way of knowing. You may be able to consult PulsePoint, but they only report on fire and EMS, not strictly police. You may also be able to find an online police radio scanner relay; those are typically time-delayed.
OMG what is going on with the low-flying helicopters?!
The Oregon Air National Guard has a helicopter squad that is based near the Salem Municipal Airport. They do routine training missions, which frequently involve lower-altitude flights, most often at night. The Salem police department does not have a helicopter, so any low-flying helicopter you’re hearing is almost certainly the Oregon Air National Guard. frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people downvoting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

Konditorei
Hey everyone! Does anyone know if Konditorei makes their cakes, fillings, and frostings from scratch in house? We love their cakes but I’ve been wondering if they’re making them in house or not anymore.

Short-term foster needed
Not sure if this would be the right place to post, but I have a friend who is in a difficult situation, and she and her husband have to move across the country on Tuesday. Unfortunately, they also have a dog that they can’t take with them for the initial trip, so they are desperately looking for someone who can foster the puppo until they can come grab him in a few months’ time.
I want to do everything possible to keep the dog out of the shelter. If you or someone you know is interested in helping please PM me!
ETA because I’m a dingus: the dog is named Fatty, and is an American Bully. He’s about five years old, neutered, and vaccination status isn’t entirely known, but I believe he has gotten at least the very basics.
He has been around dogs and cats but has also been attacked by them and has subsequent trauma, so he’d need to be the only dog/animal in the house. He has been around children too. He loves meeting new people and gets excited about it, to the point that his owners were starting to work on training.
If you need any other information about the pup please let me know 😇

Is the YMCA that bad?
I saw a post earlier about the Y being overcrowded, I wanted to get a membership there but now in second guessing it. I wanted to see if this community can break it down for me.

Any good patient-centered sleep docs?
I had a pretty bad experience with Salem Sleep Medicine.
So I'm looking for alternative providers. Can anyone recommend one? Looking for a sleep doc that is patient centered. I'm willing to go outside Salem if need be. Bonus points if they don't have a long waiting list.

QUESTION Request Dentist Recommendations, Insurance Covered
Hello all! I am still semi new to the area and am looking for a dentist for myself for a checkup and cleaning. I am combat injured so I don’t pay anything, but the dentist/office I do pick would become my permanent dentist for the foreseeable future barring some major screwup. I’ll probably need some fillings replaced down the line.
I don’t plan on moving anywhere anytime soon, I appreciate you in advance!

Stray cat with possible mange.
I have been feeding this girl for a couple weeks and yesterday I noticed she looks really bad like maybe she has mange? Does anyone know of a resource for her? I have several pets of my own and would love to help her any way I can without endangering my animals.
*** Update - I have called friends of felines and they are not accepting phone calls or even voicemails, just directing people where they can take cats for the trap spay/neuter program. If anyone has any other suggestions, plz lmk.

Salem Health is no longer on network for Regence
news.regence.comThought they would end up coming to an agreement like all the other previous conflicts did with Regence. Salem Health stuck to their demands and have been dropped.
Just putting this out there so those who weren’t aware don’t end up stuck with surprise bills if you go to the hospital, or see any departments there.

One less fitness option in the New Year: 9 Round Kickboxing Studio has closed
9 Round was on South Commercial across from Walmart in the Padington's Pizza parking lot, and the Blackjacks Sports Bar was their next door neighbor. The exact address is: 5247 COMMERCIAL ST SE SALEM OR 97306 USA
They have closed, and no info is on the door about moving. The landlord has a for lease sign up on South Commercial.
I don't know anyone that went there, though it looks like they had been open since 2017. It seems to be a franchise business, and the corporate website has no listing for them anymore:
https://www.9round.com/locations/or/salem/south-commercial-st
Lloyd Dobler said in the classic movie "Say Anything" in 1989 that kickboxing was the sport of the future. Maybe not anymore, at least not in South Salem, Oregon.

Does Vocational Rehab Services in Salem drug test?
A drug test was mentioned during my intake appt but never clarified if they conduct one. Or if I was just being asked that for future jobs. I fucking hate when something like that is just mentioned casually. Like nah tell me EXACTLY why that just came out of your mouth! I would hate to be considered ineligible over smoking legal weed. Fucking absurd that they have not decriminalized it yet federally. Been about a decade of them taxing weed sales and making hella money from it............ I have a meet and greet with a woman who owns a company that helps ppl explore what industry or field of work they want to go in. So idk when or if I will be tested. But I would like to avoid asking my case worker. He seems kinda square and like he would think I was smoking as much as Snoop Dogg or Wiz Khalifa....

Therapy suggestions
I’m going to be moving into the Keizer/Salem area very soon and wanted to get a feeler on any therapists that locals have a good experience with? Specifically that will take Aetna, works w young adults, and can help with PTSD and anxiety. I’m also curious about any couples counselors people have had a good experience with as well.
Thanks in advance!

Specialty Dry Cleaning
I'm looking for recommendations for a dry cleaner. Yelp reviews don't seem to be consistent.
I have an expensive desk chair that has a stubborn stain in the seat fabric (I spilled a small amount of milk on it). I have attempted to clean it myself twice using advice from google sources but it's time to seek a professional's help. The seat is removable, so I can bring it wherever it needs to go.

QUESTION Can anyone recommend me a good Gender Therapist in the Greater Salem/Portland Area?
I've been wanting to work through some gender identity stuff and talk to a professional about it but trying to find the right fit therapist without spending a lot of money seems difficult. I tried contacting Valley Mental Health and NeuStart after doing some research but both are completely full up and not accepting new patients. I have United which I know isn't the best insurance for this given recent events but my Job has decent additional mental health benefits so I should be able to get help even if out of pocket.
