Based on watching this game, NBA ratings are not due to too many threes
53
u/frankstaturtle Knicks 20h ago
My theory is that (1) as others have noted, it’s too difficult for most people to watch games. NYK fans are lucky we have pretty much all our games in one place; and (2) people don’t watch games anymore because gambling addiction has shifted their focus from supporting a team to just following a box score on a betting app
8
u/bobak186 20h ago
We're looking that we get to pay $300 to watch the Knicks game on a subpar streaming app? I think other teams get their games on regular TV. Msg isn't on YouTubetv so you have to have a cable package to watch them.
3
u/frankstaturtle Knicks 20h ago
I don’t know what pricing you’re referring to. I pay 180/month for internet, cable and DVR. It’s generally not economical for people to buy individual subscriptions instead of getting a cable package. The point is most teams don’t have any option to watch everything in one place
2
u/pepstein Knicks 10h ago
Don't pay for msg, I just use the knicks specific league pass which is like 89 but you can catch half off deals sometimes. We get fucked on national games but those games will be on another streaming service
14
u/RobbobertoBuii Knicks 20h ago
Gotham Sports being introduced to phase out MSG+ has sucked this season ngl, and this is with a cable plan
5
u/frankstaturtle Knicks 20h ago
I haven’t experienced it because I only watch on actual cable, but i have heard the app truly sucks :(
9
u/RobbobertoBuii Knicks 20h ago
it logs me out if I don't use the site in 1-2 days, which is the same amount of time between Knicks games not counting b2bs, and I have to input my email, then log in, and then link my account to my cable provider (each time), which takes me to my cable provider login page, and then I can finally click on the Knicks game to watch it live. And this is for desktop. The app is even more inconvenient

I'm born and raised in NY but live out of state. I'm back home for the holidays and have league pass via YouTube TV but wasn't able to watch due to blackout restrictions, my hotel room doesn't have MSG. I had to use a VPN and dick around to make it work.
Now obviously I could've just gone to a bar, but this is a frustrating experience.
2
u/TheTonyDose Knicks 20h ago
Exact same scenario for me…I pay for YouTube tv and LP and still can’t watch when I’m home for the holidays?? It’s bad enough MSG nosebleed tickets are like $250 min.
4
u/peanut-britle-latte Knicks 20h ago
Yup, I thought about sneaking into the Xmas day game. I was looking at tickets basically until tip off.
Now of course it's XMAS so there's a premium but i was willing to pay $400 and just couldn't find a decent seat.
4
u/SiphenPrax Knicks 20h ago
Folks want to watch teams who win competitive games in excellent ways. Threes are nice and all but people forget they’re not the end all be all to winning.
13
u/RobbobertoBuii Knicks 20h ago edited 20h ago
the comment above was almost word for word what Josh Hart said during the MSG broadcast interview lol
3
u/SiphenPrax Knicks 20h ago
Damn! I honestly didn’t even watch the post game. I hope it was the other way around and he read my comment to the press😂
1
u/RobbobertoBuii Knicks 20h ago
I caught the tail end of the broadcast to see the sideline interview so that's how I knew
4
u/peanut-britle-latte Knicks 20h ago
Yup. Jalen for me is so entertaining to watch because hit footwork in and around the paint is amazing. I don't need him to be Steph Curry because he's more entertaining in the midrange area.
94
u/atribecalled506 Knicks 20h ago
Josh Hart is having the best season of his career.
64
u/Thiswasamistake19 Knicks 20h ago
I can’t believe all we had to give up was Cam Reddish, some end of bench dudes and a protected pick for him
30
u/MC-Jdf Warriors 20h ago
Blazers have lowkey been a goldmine for high quality role players the last couple seasons.
1
u/penguin_torpedo Nuggets 20h ago
Who else?
23
u/FullMetalBasket Trail Blazers 20h ago
Norm Powell is probably the other decent role player dumped essentially for cap/cheapness reasons. Most of the other players offloaded are probably over or properly paid, namely cj, nurk, and dame
4
u/TheKidPresident Knicks 20h ago
Probably Anfernee and maybe Timelord in the next few months

Wasn't it just Reddish and a pick? Who else was given up?
1
u/Thiswasamistake19 Knicks 17h ago
That’s what I thought too, but looks like we gave up the least of the old Nova bros and Svi as well
8
u/Asleep_Ground1710 Bulls 20h ago
I’d be curious to see if he actually studies Rebounding, incredible board getter despite his height. Very good role player
8
u/cool_hand_legolas Knicks 20h ago
i’ve heard he does. he also claims to not even box out, just read the ball
1
u/mylanguage Knicks 16h ago
His body control is incredible and he seems to Have Better timing than like 99% of the league
7
u/RobbobertoBuii Knicks 20h ago
I was a bit worried after preseason but so far he's been putting up numbers almost identical to last season's playoffs which is great
10
u/FreeOmari 19h ago
Hart not giving a shit during preseason is the least surprising thing I’ve ever seen

u/ChannelNeo Magic 20h ago
Suggs plays way too careless and seems to forget he's our best player right now. The game was close and once he went out, our offense did too. He kept committing terrible fouls after turnovers and compounding those mistakes, along with some genuinely great plays as well.
Orlando held up for three quarters and then deflated in the fourth. forgettable past few games. hopefully Brooklyn will be what the doctor ordered for us, but with how hard they play we might be in for another embarrassing game.
25
u/Bat2121 Knicks 20h ago
Josh Hart even admitted in the post-game that it was part of their game plan to get Suggs in foul trouble. It seems pretty easy to do. He really needs to just calm down a bit. He's always at an 11 and I think he'd be a better player at 10.
8
u/ChannelNeo Magic 19h ago
Honestly, Orlando did a great job of jamming up KAT most of the game too. Getting him involved on PnR action and getting physical with him in the post.

u/Citruspilled Magic 20h ago
So scoring 31 points in a half is not a good way to win a basketball game, it seems
32
u/SiphenPrax Knicks 20h ago
This team is on fucking fire right now. We’re even within striking distance of reaching the Celtics in the standings which I never thought was possible a month and a half ago.
23
u/Prideofmexico Knicks 20h ago
Shout out to this sub for dancing on our grave after a slow start when we added two major pieces late in the off-season. Was always going to take time to gel. Super happy with this team so far
2
u/Shaunzki 9h ago
Not even a slight at all, knicks are fantastic. But the Magic are truly struggling health wise. I do wonder if the result may have been different if Paolo & Franz were available.
1
u/Prideofmexico Knicks 8h ago
You can say that about this win but I believe we have won 6 in a row and only lost two games since thanksgiving
33
u/zachuhry 20h ago
11-2 since Thanksgiving, 16-4 since the 5-6 start. Who knew that it took time to integrate 2 new players and fundamentally change your playstyle to a 5 out team? The /r/nyknicks cringe threads were unbearable, I just had to tune out for like the last month.
12
u/Prideofmexico Knicks 20h ago
The mods need to step up over there and start removing the dear diary posts
23
u/peanut-britle-latte Knicks 20h ago
Magic really fought hard. It was always gonna be a tough ask with 3 top players out, once Suggs got into foul trouble the game was a wrap.
I don't wanna see these guys healthy in the Playoffs.
15
u/fat_lever123 Knicks 20h ago
Suggs plays so hard but he makes so many bone headed plays too. Kind of gives me Draymond vibes.
3
u/Nti11matic Knicks 18h ago
I love Suggs. I'd rather have a roster full of guys who play hard and make the occasional bone-headed play than guys who just don't give a fuck. You can't teach motor but you can coach someone to dial it back.
4
u/SiphenPrax Knicks 20h ago
Magic have always been a pain in the ass for yes, so yeah I never want to see them in the playoffs
2
1
u/ontheru171 Knicks 20h ago
The Magic are a pest to play against every damn time no matter who they have on the court.
But i do not fear them at all - we match up perfectly with them.
22
u/magnetman47 Magic 20h ago
I hate playing the Knicks this season, I feel like we match up terribly with them
27
12
u/ontheru171 Knicks 20h ago
Don't worry - playing against you also is never fun. Even if we have great matchups across the board against you.
Every game between these 2 teams will be like a 12 round heavyweight battle - a war of attrition
8
u/ElTuco84 Knicks 20h ago
Take it as a compliment because the Magic are a mirror of the 2023-2024 Knicks, they fight hard and never give up.
I'm very curious how they will look at full strength.
6
u/Relo_bate 20h ago
Fully healthy knicks magic playoffs would go so hard (final score will be 86-89) or sm like that

8
u/Unacceptable0pinion 20h ago
Good streak, want to see the Knicks play a top 5 team now that they're clicking to see how real this is. Not happening until Jan 3 vs OKC.
1
u/IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan Knicks 4h ago
I mean we’ll see cause OKC is the 2nd best team in the league, maybe the best. So that will be a real test. Doesn’t determine the future of either team but will be interesting to see.

Always good to defend home court.

8
u/TheKidPresident Knicks 20h ago
That was actually wild hearing such a loud and clear let's go Knicks chant at the end there. Poor magic organist had to get the let's go magic tune in there to try and drown it out
8
u/DEFALTJ2C 19h ago
It's not wild if you know how many NY transplants live in Central Florida. It's not this odd phenomenon that people keep thinking it is. I see NYers every time I walk outside.
3
u/TheKidPresident Knicks 18h ago
Sure, but even with the injuries the Magic are far from unwatchable right now, just figured it'd be at least a little more populated by the home crowd is all. Been to Amway before actually, the fan experience is pretty solid from what I remember.
36
u/ontheru171 Knicks 20h ago
Defended Home Court successfully
Suggs might need anger management or therapy tho to be more calm and zen
14
u/ChannelNeo Magic 20h ago
I don't know what it is about the Knicks, but he seems to get extra emotional playing you guys. I have no idea why either. I can't think of any history he has with anyone on the team.

45
u/Jericho-Sims 20h ago
I'm gonna get bridaged but whatever. I know the magic are hurt but like what they're doing on the court like 60% of the time shouldn't even be called basketball lmao
They just play rugby and then get angry when the officials call fouls and then play the nastiest offensive sequence you've ever seen ending with a stepback three from Jalen Suggs like every 3 trips down the floor
21
u/Coltshokiefan Magic 20h ago
When we lose our studs all we really have is a gritty attitude and a ton of effort. It’s won us quite a few games and might keep us in the playoff picture so I’m glad we’ve got what we’ve got, but man this isn’t fun to watch offensively.
38
u/SunnyGamba 20h ago edited 20h ago
You’re not wrong but I kind of respect it, they remind me so much of the last couple of knicks teams. It’s less metal bats tho and more trying to run you over with a car lol
12
28
6
u/Nti11matic Knicks 18h ago
I honestly don't care as long as the physicality doesn't rise to the level of endangering players' health. The refs just have to rein it in when it gets to be too much / and call the game the same both ways.
15
u/ChasingItSupreme Knicks 20h ago
That kick to the nuts was a lot more egregious than the elbow lmao
3
u/TheKidPresident Knicks 20h ago edited 20h ago
They have a few hotheads on the team. I was at their game against the 6ers the other week and Franz was screaming at the refs after every possession. Warranted or not that's just not fun to witness even without a horse in that particular race.
Anthony Black also plays pretty recklessly but I am willing to chalk that up to his age/inexperience.
Then you have Suggs reenacting the Stan music video every other game.
To whomever downvoted me, may I direct you the teams 3+ technical fouls tonight.
1
u/gradedonacurve Knicks 18h ago
Dude you are forgetting Mo, who might actually be the most competitive psycho on the team haha.
I do respect these maniacs tho. Except maybe Suggs who ia actually hurting his team a lot of the time lol
0
u/TheKidPresident Knicks 18h ago
Another Magic fan put it well about Suggs, something to the effect of he's not acting like the current #1 option that he is for the team right now.
I do like their competitiveness a lot, and they're very talented frankly to the point where I wonder if me following them so much this year is me perceiving them as a real threat to the team I root for lol. But at the end of the day, with how quick things move in this league "they're young, they'll learn from games like this" can lead to something more chronic before you even realize
0
u/printerpaperwaste 20h ago
I’m honestly shocked more players haven’t been hurt playing the magic. It’s physical to the point of recklessness
-28
u/sitesuckslmao 20h ago
Why would you be brigaded, all you NY fans do is cry about physicality every time. You will be highly upvoted
15
u/Jericho-Sims 20h ago
I mean we literally outtoughed you, again. Doesn't change the fact that your best player today might actually have loose gravel in his skull when he sees a chance to commit a foul.
-7
u/sitesuckslmao 20h ago
If the Knicks 'outtoughed' the Magic then why is it only Knicks fans crying about physicality?
6
u/Jericho-Sims 20h ago
Probably because they're used to their team actually trying to play basketball if I had to guess?
I'm not complaining about them playing hard, they obviously don't have enough offensive talent to win any other way.
-3
u/sitesuckslmao 20h ago

Impressive wins by the Knicks for sure. Team of players in their absolute primes beat an injured young Magic team. Hang the banner!
10
u/SunnyGamba 20h ago
this is such sore loser behavior lol
0
u/sitesuckslmao 20h ago
the knicks should beat a team missing its 2 best players and its 3 best scorers. do you want me to hype them up for doing what they should do? i'm not sure what you are looking for here
5
u/SunnyGamba 20h ago
i’m not looking for you to do anything but you’re in here fighting with like 5 people lol Y’all have a good team and will go far soon when you heal up. The knicks were in the same position last year when half the roster was hurt and there were some brutal losses to teams i felt we would beat when healthy, sometimes you just gotta take the L and move on to the next

u/MadSpaceYT Knicks 20h ago
I mean if you’re going to play “physical” it’s weird to cry about getting called for fouls
10
u/TheKidPresident Knicks 20h ago edited 20h ago
Man it's amazing how much quicker the game went by when the refs finally bit their whistles and let the game flow more. But whew that was a sloppy game that despite the end result I am truly elated is over. Felt like neither team really wanted to be there tonight. Big props to Hart, with one of the quietest 20pt games you'll ever see.
Gotta hit free throws. Could've been a 40 point win if the Knicks capitalized on the tavern brawl that was the first half. Props to Goga, he brought a lot of physicality that the Knicks just could not match cause OG needed to stay guarding the wing.
On a side note, Jalen Suggs is his own worst enemy man. Just thrashing about and getting way too involved with the refs almost every game. He's so so good but damn watching him play is just unpleasant most of the time. And I feel very comfortable saying that after following a lot of Magic game threads this season lmao.
3
u/McDermott_Cut 20h ago
Always liked Isaac and his defense, but he is a non factor this season, maybe he should play center? The Magic have a lot of good centers though
3
7
8
u/will122589 Knicks 20h ago
4 three pointers made
10 missed free throws
Still win by 23. Knicks team is built different. In the last week, KAT took over and won a game. Brunson did the same. OG did it against the Raptors. Mikal did his thing Wednesday and tonight Hart and Brunson took over and just made the Magic submit.
-14
u/EffectiveExact8306 20h ago
Yeah they beat a team without three of their four best scorers. Yeah, they sure are built different. /s
5
u/will122589 Knicks 20h ago
Yep.
The Magic while missing their three best players usually don’t lose games by 23 points and beat the Celtics somehow.
-10
u/EffectiveExact8306 20h ago
Yeah back to backs will do that to you. Can’t wait till the playoffs when the refs aren’t your 6th man off the bench.
5
u/DEFALTJ2C 19h ago
You're making the rest of us look bad.

Dude it’s sports. If you don’t like some trash talk, stay home and knit.
14
u/daett0 20h ago
What the Magic lack in skill and talent they certainly make up for in hacking and crying
3
u/DEFALTJ2C 19h ago
Goga had a legitimate gripe about the foul calls. Also, the free throw attempt discrepancy tonight is hard to ignore. At one point, NY had like a 3:1 advantage on attempts. I'm not bitching. Teams take Ls all year. I'm just saying.

Some folks were complaining about too many 3s in today's game should watch this game. Knicks won but it sucked to watch lol
2
3
u/gradedonacurve Knicks 18h ago
Dude the people crying about 3s and how defenders can’t do anything are fucking morons lol.
The game is plenty physical already - Give defenders more rope and they will absolutely turn the game into a 03-04 era slog in short fucking order.
2
u/nadukrow Knicks 17h ago
Agreed.
It’s definitely not 3’s ruining the game. It’s how restrictive it’s been trying to watch games these days. If it’s not a blackout it’s the games being region locked for whatever reason.

u/Aeronova20 Magic 20h ago
I know we’re a physical team, but 34 Knicks FTs compared to 12 for Orlando seems a lil skewed.
Ben Taylor games are sneaky worse than Scott Foster. But doesn’t mean Orlando didn’t suck tonight. They blew it in the second half.
25
u/ObiOneKenobae Knicks 20h ago
We only took like 8 threes prior to garbage time, the gameplan was to go inside and create contact. And you guys were pretty crazy with the fouling tbh.
17
u/LegitimateMoney00 Knicks 20h ago
They normally don’t get called for it but tonight they were.
I’m not trying to sound like a homer here but the Knicks are 27th in the league in FTA per game, if they shoot 34 free throws in one game, it’s because your team is fouling way too much.
19
u/ontheru171 Knicks 20h ago
