Go bigger. The smaller the amount of water- the harder it is to keep the parameters stable.

Is 5? How much does it change with a 5 gallon compared to a 20 gallon

5 gallons is still tricky. 10 is good, 20 would be amazing.

Don’t get me wrong, 5 gallons and smaller are doable for shrimp, it’s just more advanced and for us beginners it could end in frustration and heartbreak.

I was in the process of establishing a 5g and after talking to a lot of fish and shrimp keepers about water parameters and all the details… I was convinced to go out and grab a 10 gallon instead. Keeping the water stable and consistent is very important.

If you want easy and cheap.

I went with a 2 gallon jar from Walmart for $14

They come in 4 sizes, and I ended up loving it.

Paired it with this light from amazon for $22

I went with r/OpaeUla shrimp which don't need filters or air pumps.

I started with "50" (I didn't count them) in the 2 gallon jar, and it seemed perfect. I then took 20 out to make two small half gallon jars. One for work, and one for my adult daughter, and the 10 seems good for half gallon jars. But now the "30" is looking much more sparse in the 2 gallon then they did before, still at least 5 doing laps around the jar at any given time.

The only downside to the r/OpaeUla is that they are neither freshwater or salt water. But instead "brackish" (50% saltwater) shrimp. And since 90% of things are either fresh or salt water, it feels like it heavily limits your options. But I have no regrets, for a pure small shrimp jar, they are perfect.

If you made it this far, look for "GotSnails" in the Opae Ula reddit, he sells the shrimp for a very reasonable price.

I have a 5.5 that I finally added shrimp to about a week ago (cycled tank for a month) and yeah water parameters can fluctuate a lot. I did a ton of research before doing anything about water. My kh and ph started rising which I’m assuming is because of my high gh. Solved the problem by throwing another piece of driftwood in.

I would say get lots of plants to help maintain the nitrogen cycle and ammonia. I tested the water twice a day after getting them (out of stress). I’m planning to test it once a week or every few days since it is more and more stable with driftwood.

For me when I brought my shrimp home from the LFS one died during transport home. The rest all turned out great. I also tested the water they came with just to kinda see what I was working with. (Found out I actually had better water than the LFS)

I’m also super new to this stuff because I started hardcore researching in nov before buying a fish tank and setting it up mid nov.

Also I started panicking because I thought they were not moving and molting out of stress. One ended up molting two days later. But since a lot of mine came as juveniles, they do molt pretty often.

I also did the walstad method since it seemed cooler personally and less/slower maintenance. I’m starting up school again along with work so I wanted to make sure I could give them the best care even while I’m stressed.

Have patience, do your research, and have fun!

(Apologies for the length lol)
