Announcement Changes to the Appraisal Post from 2025
Hi everyone,
The Mod Team have decided that from January 2025, the Stickied Appraisal Post will only be changed quarterly (ie: January - March) instead of monthly. We just wish to inform the subreddit before this change is implemented from next week onwards.

Help Needed Best Realistic Road Surface Product -UK
I'm thinking about which product to use for the road surfaces for my model railway. I've seen products dedicated to model railways like "smooth it" but they seem very expensive for what they are.
I was thinking for trying to find a more general purpose product, something like polyfillla to make the tarmac for the roads. I could then add imperfections directly to the road bed as it drys/after to make pop holes else. I'm unsure that how well t would adhere to my plywood base or if it will just slip around all over the place.
Any other recommendations for making quality roads would be much appreciated 👍🏻
The photo is the kind of thing I'd like to achieve.

Question New to UK railways and wants to make realistic model.
Hello I'm starting a small branch line layout based around the GWR. except I'm american and know nothing about UK branch lines. I have 3 questions if anyone knows the answer to it would greatly help with my design.
1) after the UK railroads cam together would you ever see a gwr engine pull lms coaches?
2) did all the locos get painted BR black right away?
3) would a 5700 class ever work in a mine yard?

Show and Tell My father's collection from over the years
galleryHey there everyone I wanted to tell y'all a story about my father.
My father was a train enthusiast when he was young. Before I was even born he collected model trains and made a small layout for himself. When my father got married to my mother and had kids he still collected modeltrains but never used them. He loved to collect anything that was about trains. Almost 2 years ago he got diagnosed with cancer and last June he passed away unfortunately.
When i was a little kid my father took me to train shows and always bought something for my small layout loop. After a little while when a got a little older, I kind of forgot about the hobby. Until 2 years ago when he got sick. I asked him everything about layouts, locos and rolling stock. And we had a great time talking about it.
Yesterday we were cleaning up the attic and I found a box full of rolling stock and coaches and a couple of locos. I am so grateful that he still kept these as they're in great condition and as I want to build a layout in the future, I will not need anything else to be honest. I just wanted to show how much he collected and kept. And there even is another box in the attic with even more. I wish he could've seen how grateful I am.
Thanks dad :) <3

Question Vintage PIKO
I’m going to attempt to run this vintage East German piko soon. Anything I should do before? What’s the best way to clean? Will the controller thing be safe to use?

Question Can I run two locomotives in tandem like in this photo?
I don’t know if tandem is the right word for it, but I’ve been trying to search for info and I found conversations about speed matching locomotives that led nowhere. I’m wondering if anyone does this and if it’s a pain in the butt or its easy to do? I have two n scale kato locomotives, both es44, they do have different decoders though, is there a way I can run them back to back in tandem like the real ones? I have a dcs52 controller, one train has a loksound decoder and the other decoder is an eBay special, both dcc + sound.

Help Needed My friend lost all of his Trains in the LA fires
Basically the title
I had an online friend who ran a model train server I used to frequent, I admired his layout in particular because it was civil war era trains - my favourite kind and my own dream layout was civil war era, he was sort of a model trains role model for me basically
Now his entire life's work is gone in an instant, and his home too. it's just devastating
I was wondering what would be the best thing to do to help? If his family opens a GoFundMe I will donate to it of course, but also should I perhaps start buying him some supplies for a new layout if that's what he wishes, or would that be a painful reminder of everything he lost?
I was thinking of setting up some sort of registry of all the materials he lost, but would doing something like this be too soon or offensive as he is grieving the layout he worked on for many years and it's not replaceable to him (context: I am on the autism spectrum and don't always know the appropriate thing to do when people are sad)

Question Which Screws to use?
Hello Reddit,
I'm doing some light repairs on a hornby 0-6-0 chassis and the couplings have come adrift. They're just the standard tension lock affair but they were fixed to the chassis by tiny screw. The screw is long gone so I need to replace it.
I can't find any specification for what size and type of screw I need to buy. Does anyone know?
Thanks

All four of these are powered. All four run great together. These are DC Stewart F9s. Consisting in DCC should allow the same thing with multiple locomotives.

Layout Layout update
galleryOriginal post: https://www.reddit.com/r/modeltrains/s/eIJamdiuS0
After a lot of hard work my bookshelf layout is coming on nicely.
Sorry about the poor lighting of the layout in its setting, but it getting late (4pm)
Still need to get the dry stone walls in for the front area, the signals down and then add last of the static grass. Then cows, people and a little story telling.
Since taking the first photos I covered the front loading area with stonework. The idea came to me just after I snapped the photos.

Layout 00 Layout thoughts?
galleryHowdy, I have been fortunate to be able to build a 7x4 ft table for a layout and wanting to get the most use out of it I can. The green section being a station, the blue being a timesaver shunting problem, with a tunnel behind the station, and a number of factories around the sidings. I will be running as a DCC layout so should be able to run both passenger trains and shunting at the same time.
Does this seem to much for the size of the layout? Do you have any ideas or concerns with this layout?
Cheers for your thoughts :-)

Question DCC material list
Gave my old O gauge a test drive with my 4 year old son. He likes to watch, not too hands on yet. Trains, track, and transformer are cheap and not in good condition. It also takes up so much space, it’s not a good fit for us. My old N scale ran better but not worth pursuing because what 4 year old is going to enjoy those tiny locos and cars? I can’t even see the couplers, let alone get them to stay coupled! So I’m looking to start an HO DCC that we can grow and build together. The space is an existing L shape, formerly for the slot car track. The L is a 4’x8’ sheet of plywood with a 4’x6’ piece coming out perpendicular. This can be modified, just giving an idea of square footage. My purpose for the post is to get a minimum material list for a DCC setup. Money isn’t crazy tight but also not limitless. Like I said, this is to grow the set, so it must be expandable. I might be wrong (let me know if I am), but I don’t see us running more than 3 or 4 trains at a time. His birthday is in April, so he can ask for more track, buildings, trains or cars. Whatever he likes. But I need something to get started before my wife claims the space. I will be looking on marketplace and ho sites for used parts. We will be running inexpensive trains, but they must do the job as well. Sorry for the long post. Thanks for your help.
