How often do you guys go to the range? discussion
Just curious to see how frequently you guys go and how much ammo you use per session.

u/TartarusFalls 3d ago
I uhhh. I don’t wanna talk about it.
Jokes aside, maybe 150 times a year. Every day in the summer, it’s my morning routine. Once a week in the winter.
2
u/ejpman 1d ago
That’s wild, what do you usually shoot and how many rounds? And I guess why?
2
u/TartarusFalls 1d ago
So days that I work, I shoot my EDC exclusively. I stick to low round count drills, I’m usually only there for half an hour or so. On days off, I bring every pistol I have a holster for, and my AR. I run from the draw drills, bill drills, and a full mag of defense ammo through each.
2
u/TartarusFalls 1d ago
I forgot to answer why. It’s cuz I’m a shitty shot. It’s really not intuitive to me for some reason, I struggle with it a lot. So if I wanna be comfortable carrying a gun and the responsibility that comes with it, I have to stay way the fuck on top of it. So I do. I’m lucky to live in a place where it’s $100 a year for a nice clean out door range, and to have a job that gives me the funds to have all this ammo

u/Daves_no_here 3d ago
Ideally, 1-2 times per month. I like to attend some of the 2 gun matches near me. I typically will use around 50-100 rounds of 5.56 and 9mm at each too.

u/logicalinsanity 3d ago
Oooh nice I really want to get into 2 gunning. I plan to go to the next event and ask lots of questions.
10
u/Dogemeat64 3d ago
I'm trying to go once a week and shoot 100-250 rounds.
I'm a newer shooter trying to improve. I'm also only shooting 9mm.

u/poppindopolis 3d ago
New as well. Trying to set the habit of twice a month.
I bring my snap caps amd can make 50 rounds last for a half hour or with a buddy for one hour.
1
u/Books_Weights_Ink 3d ago
If you not already, see if you can find some good instruction. It has helped my journey tremendously, and is far better to do now, so bad habits do not have to be broken later.

u/M1A_Scout_Squad-chan 3d ago edited 3d ago
Probably less than four times a year though I would Iike to go more. In regards to ammo, I can probably go through 200 rounds of 9mm but less than 50 rounds of .308.

I think this type of question is revealing. For some gun owners, shooting is an expensive occasional visit to a mediocre indoor range. For others it's a frequent social event in someone's giant backyard.

My range is outdoor, so I was going every week or every other.. then it got cold and wet so I haven’t been since the week before Thanksgiving.

I go maybe once every 3 months on average if I'm lucky and maybe 50 rounds per gun on the high end.

How many guns?

u/semiwadcutter38 3d ago
At the most, 4-5. I only have so many gun cases at the moment.

Good way to keep from buying more.
Unless you find a good deal on gun cases.

Best part about owning 15 acres was being able to set up my own range so I can go anytime I want and that's usually 2x a week depending on if my dad is down or not 😂 he has 17 acres but has neighbors on all sides I don't have one within a half mile
4
u/jtrades69 3d ago
i'd love to have space enough to set up my own!!
2
u/PortaKane48 3d ago
My main things when we bought our house was minimum 2 bathrooms and at least 10 acres. Wound up getting 3 bathrooms and 15 acres so it was a win win. It's so nice having a spot out my backdoor and we marked off 25/50/75/100 from the steel targets and old fridge we filled with sand.

u/PortaKane48 3d ago
I went outside the other night and dialed in my dad's new NV scope he got before they came down.

Man, I wish I could afford that. When I go, it’s 100-150 rounds.

Well tbh I'm pretty new so it's still very exciting for me :D And, I'd been buying cheap-ish ammo and from now on I won't be.

What kind of ammo do you use? I had been buying steel cased ammo (stuff like Magtec) but I've since learned that I should be using brass.

My 9mm and 5.56 guns have all shot more steel case ammo than anything else and they all look great and shoot great. It’s not good ammo, but it doesn’t harm your firearms.
I buy quality firearms and cheap ammo and I out-shoot almost everyone at the range.
2
u/Plus-Professor5909 3d ago
Cool I'll just keep using steel :D Much cheaper, more practice time!
2
u/indefilade 3d ago
Shoot the cheap stuff until you are shooting good and then switch to the good stuff and watch yourself shoot great.

From What I Have Heard (tm)-
The issue with steel case ammo is that the casings are coated with a lacquer to prevent rust.
Apparently the residue from this lacquer can foul the chamber and make feeding/extraction an issue.
No personal experience, just what I've read.Personally, I don't use steel cause that's just GOT to be wearing your extractor...

u/Oncology_RN 3d ago
Dang you fly through ammo lol. I’ve been going 1-2 times a week and using somewhere between 150-200 rounds. I only shoot 9 mm right now.

Disclaimer: I don't carry or stay armed for defense, and I'm not currently competing in anything. So for me, it's pure hobby.
With that out of the way...it depends! I usually take 2-3 guns on any given trip, and I try for 1-2 times a month(though I may up that this year). Partly to save space, partly because there's really only so much I can do trying to switch between a bunch of different guns.
I tend towards slower shooting. preferring accuracy over volume(see disclaimer). I also prefer muzzleloaders and single shots. So typically, my round count isn't super high with centerfires, and the highest for that tends to be .223 or .357.
Rimfire? Fuck it, we ball. I'm also planning to do a couple Steel Challenge matches this year so my .22lr round count will go up, and I try and practice with that pistol more often.

u/Rude-Spinach3545 3d ago edited 3d ago
Not as often as I would like. Although not a substitution for the real thing - I do drills at my house with my pistols for speed and acquisition about twice a week.
2025 will be the year I go more than once a month
I vow to participate in more club events such as steel challenges, 2 & 3-gun events.
I'm also of the mindset that if I'm carrying for defense, it's my responsibility to be as proficient as I can be, and that means regular practice. I cringe when I hear two of my friends who carry but haven't been to the range in over a year
I've consumed as little as 3 mags worth as the club was on my way home for that days excursion. Typically, ammo consumption varies depending on if it's a rifle visit vs pistol. Usually under 150 rounds per visit. if it's a rifle visit, I still run the steel plates at 50ft with my carry pistol (30-50 rounds)
part of me thinks that there is a point of diminishing returns on ammo usage - is my 150 rounds enough? is 300 too much and improvement for that session gets flatter as rounds fired increases?

u/Jetpack_Attack 3d ago
I'm learning my 380 pocket pistol and aside from the occasional sale, it's painful going from 9mm prices. Double to nearly triple the price sometimes.

Lots of folks shoot often, I do not. Couple times a year, couple hundred rounds.
I can literally shoot at the back of my property.

u/strangeweather415 liberal 3d ago
Once or twice a month. I don't set an ammo goal usually, and it definitely depends on weather. I shot 200 rounds today with my pistol and it was 30 degrees out, didn't really want to be out there much longer than that box lasted.

I never 'practice' off a bench, and it was a bit of a taboo for me. As I was raised we learned the basics on 22LR, target shooting a lot until you knew how to hit the target, then small game hunting with the 22LR, but that was it. Hunting rifles were purchased, sighted in with three rounds on a bench, and the rest of the box killed deer. We didn't practice (rifles - the same may not apply to handguns), at the range, it was really only for sighting in. My dad is a Vietnam vet, and a hell of a marksmen, even at 78. The idea, was get the basics down young, that skill was like riding a bike, everything else was get a good reliable gun on target and then don't fucking touch it except to kill deer, or if you think it was bumped (but we mostly checked with co-sighting). Anything else we 'practice' is dynamic, clay birds, rolling cans with the 22LR, really never on the bench. Now I admit this isn't the common practice around here and we're a bit of fudds, but I also haven't missed a deer with a gun since I was 12. Nowadays, I do go to the range and do some long distance shooting, but it's not 'practice' it's usually tweaking the gun, trying different ammo, so on. Much less focus on MOA, my gun forever was a lever action 336, probably 4moa, but fine for deer, much more emphasis on timing, and knowing when to take a shot and when not to, knowing how to get a rest for any shot, on a tree, on a rock, with the strap, it was never about the trigger pull or the 1/4" accuracy. So skip the bench, shoot some dynamic targets IMO.

I try for 2-3x a month and 150-300 rounds per session. Early on, I felt like my shoulder and hand got tired pretty quickly. I had reconstructive surgery on my thumb and have a bone graft lump and when my grip starts to soften it rocks right into it and really hurts so it's a good signal to switch to off hand for the rest of the session or quit for the day.
2
u/Books_Weights_Ink 3d ago
Typical rotation:
- Once per week, live fire training and drills ~100 rounds
- 1-2 times per month, club level IDPA matches.
- Once per month, a USPSA club level match.
- Dry fire practice daily.
I typically expect to use 700-800 rounds per month. If I take a class that month, it goes closer to 1,200. Competition shooting is a cost effective exposure, that will push you to grow. If you have not tried it, I highly encourage you to consider, no matter the skill level.

u/Sad-Concentrate-9711 3d ago
0 days per year. I shoot on my own land or family property. I shoot at least once a week. This week I've shot the last three days in a row working on a load for my new 1911. A session a day with Unique, Bullseye, and Titegroup looking for that perfect balanced all around load.

u/xvegasjimmyx 3d ago
Local county range is top notch, only 5 miles away and $13 for all day.
Unfortunately, I only shoot for about 4 hours a month.

I'm a statistician and I keep really good records. In 2024 I shot rifle on 5 occasions with 250 rounds fired in total, shot pistol on 4 occasions (3 of which were in common with the rifle) with a total of 300 rounds fired, shotgun trap shooting on 4 occasions with 500 rounds fired, 15 days of duck hunting with 66 rounds fired for 11 ducks killed, 15 practice shots with my muzzle-loader and 5 days of deer hunting for 1 round fired for 1 deer killed. So in total for 2024 I did 10 range visits & 20 days of hunting with a total of 1,132 rounds expended and dozen animals killed.

once a week for ladies night. depends on what I am doing. 22lr, im just mag dumping giggling. 2-300 rounds
AR? target transitions with an alternate qual target at 25 yards maybe 100 rounds
carry pistol? various drills from a low ready. 50-200 rounds depending on how long I am there and which drills I am running.
competitive match? 100-200 rounds depending on things.

Once a week. 22, 9, 556, and 6.5 if I decide I hate money that day.
I don't do the range but do blm land where I've found a good 500+ yard spot set up paper stands for handguns.
2
u/TipFar1326 3d ago
Once a month. 50 rounds of 9mm. 100-200 rounds of .22LR. Occasionally, 25 rounds of 12 gauge. I should shoot more, but between the time, 45 minute drive to the outdoor range, weather constraints, and cost, yknow.
Dry fire and manipulation drills at home 2-3 times a week tho. Something better than nothing.
2
u/Tex_Arizona 3d ago
Just a few times a year. I've been shooting since I could walk and have a solid baseline proficiency that is more than adequate even when I don't practice. Would I be better if I practiced constantly? Yes, definitely. But I'm very confident in my skills as is.

u/muddlebrainedmedic progressive 2d ago
Not nearly enough. These days, every time I shoot my mind gets caught up in the cost of ammunition components. *Bang* $1.00. *Bang* $2.00. *Bang* $3.00. But I also strongly prefer a particular range that's over an hour away because it's $35 all ranges all day. You can relax, spend time, and move from plinking to 50, 100-, 200 and 300 yard ranges. All for $35.
Even worse, I spend so much time accumulating primers that I can't stand the idea of using them to load ammunition. I have a beautiful chest filled with primers, and find myself unable to commit them to one caliber or another. It's an illness.
2
u/butter_lover 2d ago
Once every two to three months and I’ll use 150 9mm, 150 300 or 556 per trip maybe a little less if it’s just me.
The indoor range I go to is nice but expensive and this is realistically as much as we can shoot in an hour.
2
u/stuffedpotatospud 2d ago
I'm a member of a club which allows me to shoot almost every day if I wanted to for a nominal annual fee. I end up practicing 2-3 days a week. Mostly with one of my 22LR rifles at reduced targets, because there's no point in wasting good centerfire ammo for this. Typically I do 40 rounds standing slowfire, which takes an hour, and maybe 80 each of rapid sitting and rapid prone, which take about 20 minutes in all. Training for the rapidfire stages, where you have about 1 minute to do a 10-shot string + mandatory reload, is the closest I get to magdumping. I also practice with my shotgun about 1x a week (either trap or skeet), for maybe 150 targets at a time.
On Saturday mornings there's a rifle match, either rimfire out to 100m or highpower at 300 yards. This is typically 60 - 80 rounds + sighters. On Saturday afternoons there's a trap match, with 100 targets (25 singles, 25 handicap, 50 doubles).

Once every other weekend, Usually use 300-600 rounds of various calibers.
Mainly 9mm, probably 200 rounds, .22lr, 200-400 rounds and 5.56, 100-200 rounds with the occasional .380 to keep the bodyguard 2.0 running smooth lol

u/Pattison320 3d ago
Try to go twice a week but might be once or skipped if life gets in the way. I'll shoot 200-250 rounds in a few hours. I'm constrained by time, not ammo cost. I reload center-fire ammo. 100 rounds are 22. Until recently I wasn't shooting 22 but I'm realizing I need to practice with that gun too. I'm a bullseye pistol shooter.

Goal is once a month, and shooting about 200 rounds in my pistol. Might add in some rifle or clays as well. I'd love to do more, but just don't have the time or funds for it.
To offset that, I've invested a lot in deyfire, with a mantis x10 ,lase academy, and coolfiretrainer co2 system. I dryfire with the Mantis almost daily, and the coolfire and laser a few times a month.

Aiming for 2x a month. Currently 1 a month, putting 100-150rds through XD Mod.2 9mm each trip. Working on finding a new carry, so the next few range days will be renting/borrowing for trial/comparison. Just bought 2k rounds from my uncle(new FFL locally) at cost, so that’ll help the trips hurt the pocket a bit less.

Bi-weekly for sporting clays/5-stand (depending on season) Shoot between 50-100 shells.
Carry gun gets out every 4-6 weeks. Usually mix up drills and shoot a 50 round box. Weekly draw/dry fire practice at home.
Other “fun” guns only get out about once or twice a year. Milsurp ammo is too sparse and expensive for much more than 10-20 rounds with those.

i try to go at least 3 times a month but sometimes it's only 2. i'd go twice a week if i could afford the ammo.
i usually use 60+ 9mm with two pistols but if i bring my mp5 22 i'm using 100 rds. ps90, 50 - 200 rds.
two pistols ends up being 30 minutes or so, but add in the sbrs and usually it's an hour / hour & fifteen

I shoot at my house and it varies a lot I might shoot anywhere from a couple times a week to once every couple of months. My main calibers are 22 and 300 win mag. Lately it’s been more 22 than anything my son has been learning to shoot and he’s not big enough to handle anything else.

I’m always trying for once a week, but weather and life gets in the way.

Not as much as I’d like. I used to go once a week or every other week and shoot a couple hundred rounds. I got divorced and have much less disposable income now so I try to go once a month or so. I have a range membership so there’s no cost for each trip, plus it’s just down the road, so I’ve been going more like once or twice a week lately and just shooting 50-100 rounds. I shoot my rifles a lot less than I used to just due to cost per round. I buy in bulk when I can but it’s much more expensive to shoot them than my pistols.

When I was more active I liked to go twice a week and shoot a few hundred per session, I found this was a pretty efficient way to build skill without getting too burnt out, I would say if your range is close to you, go more often but don't shoot as much per session, leave, think about what you learned, dry fire a bunch, come back, rinse and repeat

It was once a month for proficiency, but has morphed into once a quarter due to cost and hassle.

I'm usually at the range close to every week. A lot of 22 gets shot, often 150-200 rounds per trip. I'll usually throw some 9mm or 380 down range with it, but that's normally 25-50 rounds just to stay proficient with those guns.
If I'm shooting rifles, it's again usually 22. I do a bunch of .243 shooting as well because I like how my 243 rifles handle.

2-3x/week. Run either pistol or rifle as well as the 22 version of each for combat of arms. Going through about 1k rounds per month of 5.56/.223, 9 and about 1500 of .22.

Twice a month at least, for me this is "a lot". 200-250 rounds 9mm per sesh. Buy 1k cases, usually from SGAmmo, but it's getting harder to find the brand/bullet weight I want so AmmoSeek is getting used more often.
Also just finished the Defensive Pistol training series at my range, hence my "frequent" trips to practice stuff I learned that I'm really not good at yet.

I like to go once or twice a month and shoot maybe 50 rounds of .22, 50 rounds of 9mm or .380 and 20 to 40 rounds of 5.56. The loading and shooting takes me around an hour and that's about all the time/money that I can afford to spend on each visit. I think it's enough to keep me at least somewhat tuned up.

Only one range where I live (in East Tennessee go figure) and it has weird hours. I get to go maybe 3 or 4 times a year now. Probably go through about 200 each time. I only go to make sure I still shoot straight just in case. I actually hate going because I’m surrounded by nothing but hate and ignorance. Good times.

Once a week on average. Reloading ammo keeps costs to about .12 cents a round, range membership keeps fees down. I have also found, since reloading, at least that there comes a point of diminishing returns. I might have four hundred rounds of 45 acp or 45 colt, but there will come a point after 100-150 rounds that I will suffer fatigue of either focus or hand strength and I have to put the brakes on. Got a 9mm for Christmas so I hope that will change. 38’s I can shoot all day, my dad started loading some light rounds for plinking and it’s how I started my kids shooting.
My range is next to a park where I trail ride, so my ideal day is to start out riding the trails in the morning, have a picnic and then cross the road to the range!!!

When the weather is cooperating I go to the range every Wednesday to shoot my Ruger Precision Rimfire .22. usually about 100 rounds from 50-300 yards
Sometimes take my .308 as well, but not as often.
I only get to the pistol range every few months

3-6x a month, some for just range practice, some for classes, some for matches.

I’m in a shotgun league. There are three series per year, and each series is 7 weekends. 50 rounds of 12 gauge per weekend minimum. About half the time I bring one or two of my other guns and spend a box or two.

I’m a new shooter with lots of free time and an annual membership to the local range. I go as often as 3x per week. I tend to go for short sessions that allow me time in between to research how to correct and improve my shooting.

1x / mo. , 9mm, 100-150 rnds/2.5hr session.
But bought bulk recently to avoid continual CA ammo tax/purchase🤮.
