*95% don't need an IPad Air or Pro and waste their money on it. If the goal is to watch Netflix and YouTube you can spend a third and still get a good tablet.
Yeah the Samsung Galaxy S series tablets make more sense as they have OLED screen and 120 Hz and also the S9 and S9 plus are more value for money than the M4 iPad Pro. I can’t stand those grey bars while watching Netflix on the iPad LCD screens.
Yeah but it’s aspect ratio makes so much more sense for anything that isn’t Netflix. 16:9 sucks ass on tablets (and computers) and the fact that Apple has avoided it this entire time is a big selling point for me.
I like tablets that are 4:3 because then you can use them oriented vertically without being cramped, and I like computer monitors that are 16:10 because they’re always the same resolution and density as 16:9 but with extra vertical pixels (1920x1200 vs 1920x1080 for example). Black bars on video mean nothing in that case.
I absolutely love that Apple actually feels the same way and has been giving us these aspect ratios everywhere.
Having used both the Apple Pencil USB-C and the S Pen that came with the Galaxy Tab S7+, I strongly believe the S Pen is a considerably better product to use. Everything from air gestures to the floating pointer to pressure sensitivity to the feel of the nib. Samsung's got it locked down. And it even comes with the tablet!
I'm glad Apple's taken steps to improve the Pencil with the new gen. It's the one feature I miss the most, having swapped to an iPad.
I agree mostly because apps on the Android tablet ecosystem are shit quality phone ports and almost always force you to use the vertical orientation. It's why at the end of the day, I chose an iPad.
However, in terms of the actual OS itself, I vastly prefer OneUI and DeX to iPadOS. Plugging in the keyboard to my old Tab 7+ and swapping it to DeX mode with a taskbar and fully windowed apps, was truly glorious. You felt like you were using a full Linux computer, because you were. Whipping out Termux and doing a Neofetch on my Android tablet got me all giddy.
Meanwhile, my current iPad feels and continues to feel like a embiggened iPhone even with the Magic Keyboard Folio attached.
For all intents and purposes, the S Pen provided on Galaxy tablets (and phones, I might add) is a considerably better product than the Apple Pencil was, at least until the newest Pencil Pro. It has considerably more features, most of which were actually genuinely useful instead of the typical Samsung "feature spam" you see.
Calling a better product "broke mentality" just because it comes with the device and doesn't need to be a separate purchase, is quite honestly broke mentality in itself. The price (or lack thereof) ain't everything.
Android tablets which work for a long time are still an untested territory.
When I was getting my iPad, I could have saved about 25% of my costs going with Android but there was no guarantee it would have lasted the 5 years I had on.
The situation may have changed now but Samsung is still to prove it.
yea buy an android tab if you hate having an app market. you can look at the three apps on the play store in crisp color. or just dont buy ewaste and get an older ipad.
The Air (M1 model onwards) has 8GB RAM, whereas the 10th Gen has 4GB RAM
That means the Air (M1 model onwards) has a longer usable lifespan (both in terms of annual OS updates and when it starts to feel "slow") and can run the Apple Intelligence features that were recently announced
As places like Best Buy are selling off stocks of the M1 Air for not much more than a 10th Gen, people should absolutely get the M1 Air
It would not be a waste of money to do so, as it would last several years longer before reaching the end of its usable life
But this isn't about processing power, it's about certain apps not functioning on older versions of the iPad OS.
Example : I had a 1st Gen iPad Air from new. The last major annual update it got was iOS 12, and the last update overall was iPad OS 12.5.7
Which means any app that required iPad OS 13 or later simply will not work at all on the 1st Gen iPad Air
What apps? High FPS games? 4K video streamers?
No. The Amazon app is one example. Which doesn't decide streaming video, last time I checked.
"Well just use the website in the browser"
Except that an ever-increasing number of websites wouldn't load properly (or at all) because they required a later version of Safari, as it's tied to the OS version. And we all know the web version is often inferior to the app.
Which is why if the choice is between the iPad 10th Gen (4GB RAM) and the iPad Air M1 (8GB RAM) and the provide is similar then absolutely get the M1 Air, because it will have a usable lifespan that will far exceed that of the 10th Gen
You may complain that things are this way, and you probably have a point, but this is not the "why a 20 year old Windows laptop is superior to an Apple tablet" subreddit, is it?
That was not my argument. My point was that video steaming does not require much processing power. Most midrange mobile devices from 2015-2016 and beyond can easily handle video streaming. It makes no sense to drop 1.3k on a bloody iPad just for a few more years when you can always just buy a midrange or even entry level one and just replace that every 4-5 years.
My entire point - expressed multiple times - is that if your choose is between the 10th gen or the M1 Air (which can be found on sale for a very similar price) the get the M1 Air
It may surprise you that I am not Tim Apple, and I did not write the rules of how iPad OS is updated and supported. I also didn't say that I was happy with how iPad is updated and supported on older models.
I'm just saying that this is how it works, and if you are getting an iPad and your choice is 10th gen or M1 Air then get the one that will have the longest lifespan because your investment will pay off.
Holy crap, I actually can't read. I thought you were comparing the pro and the air lmao. The iPad 10 is disappointing tbh. The 9th gen was solid value when it came out though
If the goal is to watch Netflix and YouTube then I want the best screen possible - same way I want the best monitor for gaming, or best tv for watching sports.
I would argue that even 98%-99% of iPad users do not need a iPad Pro,Majority could get by on a 5 year old base iPad and wouldn’t know the difference between the two. Same goes for IPhones, Apple Watches and most of all Macs. There are So, So, SO many people that buy a MacBook Pro when a bare bones intel MacBook Air would do everything they need. It’s not my money, but it just irks me when someone buys a $3,000 MacBook Pro for spreadsheets and to watch YouTube.
I would argue it wouldn’t be overkill if the App Store would not be gate kept from Mac apps. Instead of telling people what they need, I’d focus more on why the pro is the only one with oled, 120hz monitor, and quad audio speakers. Those are basic features.
Oh 100% I will confess I got my Air for the 8GB of RAM
Because apps were constantly ejected from memory and because it was only $30 more than the 10th gen at least for my config I wanted but still I question if it was worth the $30
