Weekly Megathread Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread
General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:
Battery health
Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.
Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.
You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.
You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.
Battery life
Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:
- Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
- Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
- Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging
If you experience issues with your battery:
- Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
- If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
- Review the advice below on maximising battery life
- Consider restoring your device.
- If issues persist, contact Apple Support.
Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.
- Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
- Remove apps from background app refresh
- Ensure auto lock is on
- Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
- Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
- Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life
Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.
- Avoid extreme temperatures
- If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
- Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

galleryI don’t love the 16Pro camera, but the macro function seems pretty great. Here is a sample of my Eddy Bauer pants. The weave is very small and hard to make out with the naked eye

Support My mom got a new iPhone but now our texts don’t work…
This is so strange to me. I have an iPhone and have pretty much used apple exclusively since smartphones became a thing.
My mom just recently switched from a Google phone to an iPhone, but now, our texts aren’t going through.
I tried disabling RCS and SMS/MMS in her settings to get things switched over to iMessage, but that didn’t work.
I also updated her contact in my iPhone in case that was the problem (I was overseas for a long time, and it duplicated my contacts and added in all sorts of wrong country code info). Now, in her contact on my phone, ALL of the info is right…but our messaging doesn’t work at all.
It’s so weird — I’ve never seen this before “Text Message • RCS” in the text field where you type…
Anyone have any ideas on how to get our text messaging to work? Or do we need to go to the cell provider? Or apple?
TIA.

Discussion Night time zoom shots
galleryHi all, as you may know, when it gets dark, and you wanna take a photo using your telephoto lens, the phone will most likely decide that it can get a better result using the main camera, which is bullshit imo, and Apple should give us a manual focus mode too.
Is there any reliable workaround to avoid this? I’ve tried my best to shoot the Moon with my 16 Pro, but it just falls apart, and is nowhere near as good as my old Galaxy S20+, even in its preview, before any image processing.
These 2 images were my best attempts, the rest were white blobs. I used to take a lot of pictures of the Moon, so this is frustrating. But this and the keyboard are my only complaints so far, iOS has been a wonderful experience otherwise.

Discussion Best practice to protect your passwords
I’m using the Passwords app, as I don’t intend to migrate to a different phone, I will use iPhone forever.
My concern is: the app will use the Face ID to identify you and on 3 attempt will ask you for the your passcode. If your phone is stolen and the thief manages to get your passcode also (which is how most of the time happens, because they watch you enter it), he can have access to all your passwords for a short period of time, until you put the phone in Stolen mode.
If I enable the Face ID requirement for Passwords app, this will produce the expected result, it will always ask for Face ID, skipping the passcode. Is that the best practice to protect your passwords in this specific case?
What other suggestions you have to further enhance the phone security, in case of theft where the thief has access to passcode for a brief period of time? For example, I cannot protect the Settings app with a Face ID.

Discussion Stolen iPhone in ‘Find My’
A couple of months ago, my iPhone 15 Pro Max was stolen from a park bench. Since I had AppleCare, I filed a claim, which was approved, and I received a replacement phone.
I hadn’t given much thought to my stolen phone until yesterday, when I opened Find My to locate my AirPods. To my surprise, I saw that the stolen iPhone was showing a live location—not far from where I live.
I erased and reset the phone remotely when it was stolen, but now I’m worried that my iCloud account might still be linked to it, and someone could have access.
Is this possible? Does anyone have any experience of a stolen iPhone location appearing in Find My after erase?

Support new phone anxiety
so i upgraded from the 13 to the 16 pro for christmas this year and i ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! i do have some questions about the phone in general as my new phone anxiety is very bad 😭 1. how hard is it to scratch the cameras on the back? I have a phone case with a lip on the back to prevent this but it still makes me nervous 2. is there any possible way that i can damage my microphone on my phone (bottom 3 dots next to the charger port) just from blowing on it? there was a crumb of something in there and i just blew on it to get it out. the microphone wasn’t on at all but it still makes me nervous and i recorded a voice memo and it sounds all good and very clear! i know these questions sound a little nutty, but i just want to make sure my phone is still working fine as it should! thank you!

Support Restore deleted iMessages
Hi. I accidentally deleted a conversation which had some important texts. The conversation were not “normal” text messages but iMessage texts. - blue texts not green.
I’ve tried going into the messages app and restored recently deleted but that’s only normal texts(green ones) not iMessage.
How can retrieve deleted iMessage conversations?

Support Why can’t Siri open iheartradio on CarPlay?
I updated to 18.2.1. Iheartradio has always opened when connected to CarPlay except for a recent occurrence. I ask Siri to open it because I’m driving. Siri responds with “it doesn’t look like you have an app called iheartradio.” Unm, there certainly is iheartradio installed.

Support Help! Why can't I set the default alarm sound that will be used for all future alarms?
I just traded from an Iphone 8 to an Iphone 15 plus today and it seems that the geniuses at Apple have gone backwards. Any new alarms I create default to a ridiculously low volume "radial" sound. My existing alarms from my old phone were set to custom music snippets at a decent volume. Why is there no option to set your default alarm sound one time rather than have to go in and change the radial sound to another every time you make an alarm? RIDICULOUS!

Discussion Anyone switched from Samsung to iPhone?
Loke the title says, has anyone here owned a Samsung Galaxy before and then switched to iPhone? I'm thinking about doing that, currently have the Galaxy S24 and thinking of getting the iPhone 16 Pro Max, but I want to see if anyone has made a similar change before and what it was like adapting to a phone and system you've not used before.
