That's when I drink some juice lol. Always easier to drink something than to eat when you're not feeling it

We were celebrating a birthday, and my friend deviced we were going to order milkshakes for desert. We placed the order, I bolused, the waiter comes back about 8 minutes later saying that they are out of ice cream. 🫠

😆 Yes! I've had that happen at the house too... You can only truly appreciate that total aggravation if you take insulin, to others it's a minor inconvenience.

I eat some of it and go "oh well, I can have a soda now". Much to my dentist's dismay I'll pour it into a thermo mug (with an ice cube the size of a muffin) and drink it over a couple of hours. Keep the spiking to a minimum.

Flash backs to bolusing in a tapas restaurant only for them to bring out each plate at 20 minute intervals. So instead of a big mix of things that everyone could tuck into it was 3 prawns between 7 adults every 20 mins. I just ended up eating all my emergency sweets and having a shit time. Fuck you tapas restaurant in Broadstairs England. You were nice people, but that's not how tapas is supposed to work!

Don't worry, back when I wasn't diabetic, I would still have been highly annoyed at the situation you described.
It may devolve to fist-i-cuffs depending on just how hangry trying to share 3 prawns between 7 adults becomes.

Jelly Babies are the answer - more often than not I can stomach them when I’m not hungry and sometimes they even get the appetite going.

I’ve learned to wait until I actually start eating before bolusing, especially when ordering out. It’s not perfect, but it helps avoid situations like this.

Just bolus during or right after when you have a better idea. Maybe this is subconsciously a reason why I eat meals rather quickly, but I've never had issues from doing this. I think it's only really going to cause a bad initial spike if you're having very high carb meals without much fat or protein to slow down the absorption.

This is highly dependant on the person and their type of insulin. Even depends on if you’ve been physically active, if you’re trending up or down already etc. I need 15 minutes for Novorapid to start working or I’ll spike hard, no matter what I eat.
The only time I won’t pre-bolus is after a run.

EVERYTHING on this sub is highly dependent on the person and their lifestyle choices. I would hope everybody in this sub is aware of that.
If you find yourself in forcefeed-or-go-unconscious situations, enough to make a meme about it no less, then it might not be such a bad idea to exercise some caution. I'm not suggesting doing this every time. There isn't a rigid set of protocols that we must always abide by regardless of the surrounding circumstances and you even admit this in your reply.
As diabetics we're constantly juggling moving variables at all times. There may be times where bolusing during or after eating certain meals that will actually end up with better results and downvoting this reply doesn't change that reality. I would HOPE I'm preaching to the choir here.

Not great general advice. Some people can get away with it, but many(most?) people generally have to bolus 15-20 mins before they eat, otherwise they’ll spike and hang for hours. Insulin is not instant.

Spike and hang for hours?
I would argue that having a meal's worth of active insulin in your system and then having to force feed yourself (heaven forbid you're unable to hold your food down during flu season) is a worse fate.

u/Run-And_Gun 12h ago
If I have the flu and I'm not eating, I'm not bolusing a "meals worth of... insulin", either.

Nothing is worse than bolusing for food, then tasting it and having it be gross. Although once I ordered a chicken katsu bowl for delivery, and it arrived with a giant tempura shrimp in it, presumably a “free upgrade”. I’m allergic to shellfish, and I had already bolused before I opened it. 🤬
