Daughter got her acceptance letter today, looking for feedback.
My daughter got accepted into the Korbel School of international studies. She is looking at other schools in the beltway like American, George Washington, U of Maryland etc. Looking for some feedback from current or former students:
International Studies equations: What are the professors like? What’s internship options like? Job placement after college?
General questions: What’s the dorms like? Any tips? What’s the surround city like? Off campus area like? Do you need a car if you live on campus?
Thanks interwebs and any other comments welcome!

Hello there! Congratulations to your daughter for being accepted at DU! It’s a good thing that she’s keeping an eye out at the other schools, options are great.
I am a business major who has taken only one international studies class, so I may not have the best insight to offer. That being said, I loved my professor and that class was really great! The international studies department seems to take a lot of pride in their classes and curriculum, for good reason. I went into the class knowing nothing on the subject, and left with a great deal of insight into politics and different countries. The class was incredibly interactive and fun to be in. I don’t know if all classes are like this, but I do know a few people with this specific major that love it!
DU also has a really great program for internship guidance that I have been using recently for my own search. The same can be said for job searches after graduation, having plenty of resources and aid.
As far as campus living goes, it really depends on who you’re rooming with. I really enjoyed my first two years, as I knew my roommate before committing to DU. The living quarters could be better, as one of them doesn’t have A/C and is a little outdated. Second year living is far better, and was my best year at DU. There is lots to do off campus, and a car isn’t necessary with the light rail being so close. I have a job in the city that I commute to, and it’s really easy to get to and from. Overall, DU is a great option (if you have a great financial aid package/aren’t worried about tuition costs), and I hope this provides more insight!

One more thing to note: I just got back from studying abroad through DU. If your daughter really wants international experience, take a look at their abroad program. A lot of my peers came to DU for this alone, and I understand why. It’s a great program that I really recommend!

I’m in my last year at DU as international studies major and I would definitely recommend it if she is interested in a career in the field, and especially if she’s planning on getting a masters degree in international studies. DU has the Korbel jump start program, which I’m in, and with it you take 3 grad classes in your last year and get a large scholarship for Korbel grad school, which is very highly ranked for international studies. DU also requires international studies majors to study abroad, and it doesn’t charge any extra tuition to do so, and pays for your flights. It was a great opportunity in my opinion. As far as the dorms and campus life go, I would recommend her to apply to a living and learning community (LLC). You get better housing (some of the dorms are better than others) and it’s a great way to make friends. I’d be happy to answer any questions you have!

I graduated with a masters in International Business from DU in 2004. It’s a great university and Korbel is one of the best on the campus. The GSIS program has a ton of international accolades as well. There are some very well known alumni like Condi Rice. If her goal is government service or international relations it would be a wonderful choice.
The dorms seem pretty amazing from what I see walking my dogs on campus these days. The neighborhood is very safe, and the weather in Colorado is hands down perfect.
Any of those schools are great choices! I hope she is overwhelmed with options!
