Love bite. Kittens bite during play to learn battle and hunting skills. Mama cats wrap their jaws around babies’ necks to carry them places. They don’t break the skin unless they feel threatened enough. Biting is something cats do with their family. You are in your cat’s family basically.

My cat bites my hand really tenderly while purring every morning and then she curls up next to me on the bed. I always say they are love bites ❤️

u/gregn8r1 15h ago

There's this one neighborhood cat that gets kinda bitey when you pet her. For quite a whileI thought she was a bit of an a- hole, and I'd try to pull my hand back when she'd try to bite, which would often end up in broken skin and further belief that she was not a very nice cat.

But then, I started to just leave my hand still when she bit, and discovered that as long as you don't pull back, she bites incredibly softly. Nothing more than a sweet love nibble!

My own cat, though, seems to think hands are chew toys.

144

u/lastoppertunity333 15h ago

Y do they go crazy when u pull ur hand away? I never understood that. I get the love biting and all but if I pull away? Anyone know y?

249

u/OriDoodle 15h ago

It's a prey instinct. If you don't flinch the instinct doesn't get activated.

Works with some humans too! Source: I was in kindergarten

The kill switch is a hair trigger for cats.

66

u/Magdalan 14h ago

Play/prey. Cats playing with one another can look pretty violent, it usually isn't violent at all though, just the qay they roundhouse with eachother. We humans are pretty much more 'breakable' compared to them.

30

u/Hoixe 11h ago edited 11h ago

It's our lack of fur and loose skin. Our skin will just rip where their's will continue to be pulled along, and we don't have that double layer of fuzz to keep claws away from our skin in the first place.

9

u/Magdalan 11h ago

Exactly! And we react/give way other signals that are new/unknown to older cats.

15

u/flashmedallion 15h ago

It's part of the game.

If you don't want to play "maul the hand", just gently make a fist.

11

u/cojiro_blue 10h ago

For my cats, grooming is an establishment of dominance. There's a pecking order in the household, and our foster cat has been triggering the upper management whenever he doesn't sit still for his grooming. My cats will often hiss and / or bat at him.

9

u/Com_BEPFA 11h ago

1 - Teeth and claws are sharp. Like (not razor sharp) knives, gently lowering them onto your skin will not result in damage. Moving one or the other upon contact, however, will often result in blood.

2 - As pointed out already, instincts. As much as they're playing or love biting, once they sense something running away, hunting instincts kick in and they'll try to keep a hold of it. That plus point 1 results in ouchies even if they're still pulling their punches. Think of it like the videos of people trying to stop their car from rolling away with their wimpy little bodies. It's ridiculously stupid looking (and stupid) but it happens without thought. This times a thousand is cats instinctively pawing after anything moving in their vicinity.

There was a cat that used to come inside my house and he was a big old boy and he would sit next to me wanting to be stroked. One day the monster bit me and it felt like a tiger had latched onto my hand!

26

u/Comfortable_Pilot122 14h ago

A lot of stray cats do this! I like to believe after a lot of petting they get overstimulated and want you to stop. I have a stray orange cat, and he occasionally bites me softly.

My cat does bite me randomly, but it's very hard and often breaks skin. Does she just not realize how rough she is?

125

u/HoldStrong96 15h ago

Depends. She may have never learned if she was removed from mom and siblings too young, in which case it is you that teaches her control. To do this (usually when they are young), I just hiss or “OW!” And remove my attention from them as soon as it happens. Eventually they understand.

Alternatively, you may be over stimulating her and she bites to say stop.

28

u/qnhui 15h ago

That makes sense. She's 4 now, and she never did this as a kitten. It's hard to tell with her since if it's too much attention, she bites. If I don't give her enough attention, she also bites. I also do hiss at her every time, but I've never walked away, so ill start doing that as well. Thank you

20

u/HoldStrong96 15h ago

If it’s recent it might be illness, so make sure you’re doing a yearly vet check and I’d do a urine check just in case of UTI. Cats are very good at hiding illness, but do show it in behavioral issues like new aggression or bathrooming outside of the box. Otherwise, it could be something new in the house (anything from an animal outside annoying her to a chair being moved from one side of the room to a different spot 😅). Cats don’t like change haha. Good news is that if it’s from something new, she should adapt and just making sure to keep on top of the training “biting = bad”, she should stop eventually.

If you mean she didn’t do it at <1 year and it started after she turned 1 year old and hasn’t stopped… welcome to teenage cat years. 1-2 is teenager attitude. If you didn’t nip the behavior then, it’s a lot of training in your future!

3

u/qnhui 15h ago

I will look into getting her a vet visit, the biting only started after we moved houses. But I will still get her a check-up just incase 👍

16

u/HoldStrong96 15h ago

Ahh moving houses is a big change. Might be worth plugging in some feliway diffusers. Also try to make her a few cubby spots. A cabinet that’s all hers works well or even a room dedicated to being her quiet cat zone.

Good luck! 💕

11

u/meltyandbuttery 14h ago

My cats never reacted to me making pain noises (hissing worked but scared them so I do not like) but I found a soft, quiet, "geeentle" calmed them down. They are well enough trained now I can say gentle as a pseudo-command to break up a fight if play wrestling gets too rough or stop a jump one of them is planning on the other lol

She might not especially if she was adopted as a solo kitten. I have had issues with male cats nipping me especially if am not playing or getting his treats fast enough. I just stop what I am doing, say ouch, and walk away. If I was holding treats, they go back in the drawer. It took a few times but he hasn't nipped me recently.

4

u/Mirth2727 15h ago

I thought I was the only one! Total ignore will stop them from nipping very quickly. Old school pet owner here.

5

u/nycregoddess 14h ago

They learn fast, if they see the treats out and then get put back away 😬.

My cat used to bite a bit too hard so I'd yell "ow". Now it's so funny he will go to love bite me and just rest his teeth on me. It's so hilarious and cute!

3

u/megaglacial 8h ago

Oh man my cat did this too where after he'd love bite too hard I'd yell, and then he'd suddenly stop and look off into the distance with his mouth still open. It was hilarious but I think he's learned to stop biting so hard 😂

5

u/UnicornSheets 15h ago

Possibly. Try yowling or making a noise a cat might if it was hurt when she bites. Aka use her language to let her know you are harmed/ hurt. See if this communication helps change the situation.

4

u/Kashna 12h ago

My cat prefers to communicate her boundaries with bites, as well as asking for attention if we don't notice right away. We got her a couple talking buttons started training her to use those. We chose "play" and "pets" for the first two, since those were the two things she most often wanted when she bit us. They helped cut down the biting a ton! It was a win-win; she gets what she wants right away and we get bit less.

We use the fluent pet ones but there are others out there that are cheaper. Fluent pet has a bunch of great free training videos too.

15

u/CrystalSplice 14h ago

I would also add to this, some cats don’t learn to be gentle with the biting. This is especially the case if they’re separated from their litter early on and grow up from kitten stage with humans only. I believe Jackson Galaxy was the person I heard explain this, and if so it was also him that said you can help train them as kittens: When a kitten bites another one too hard, they squeal. If we make similar noises when they do it to us as kittens, they learn the same thing.

That's not a love bite. They scratch the skin while grooming their fur. Dogs do the same too. I have a cat, and she does the same to her kitten. It's their way of grooming. So yeah OP belongs to the cat family. 😂

22

u/kdjfsk 14h ago edited 11h ago

ive heard they only like grooming each other to a point. they do it to show some love, and will do it as they feel its needed, but it is a chore. if they feel the other cat isnt doing a good enough job grooming itself, thats when they act shitty about it. its a "god damn...you stink. wash your ass mother fucker" moment.

like mommy will happily give her toddler bath time, and its all sweet and cheery. when the kid is 14, has become a mega gamer, and their room reeks of BO, the sentiment becomes a more hostile "jesus christ, turn off the computer and TAKE A SHOWER!"

17

u/PupEDog 15h ago

They really don't like being uncomfortable, maybe? Idk cuz it seems like such a quick turn from sleepy to attack... Like the second they become uncomfortable their reflex is to panick. Idk. They're weird.

Actually is probably just evolution. They see an opponent is vulnerable so evolution tells them to attack.

7

u/mint_o 15h ago

I feel this way too and it depends so much on the cat! One of mine will vocalize/show signs when she is a bit annoyed so I know to stop. But my boy has a really active happy tail and it’s really hard to see when he is done so the only warning I get is the “not like that” chomp 🤣

It’s actually been shown that they aren’t domesticated, they have mastered the art of co-existing.

Domesticated implies that they follow orders and recognise humans as their masters. I think they domesticated us 😂

4

u/Neamow 12h ago

Yeah the thing is with cats they understand orders, and they understand who is their master, they just don't give a shit most of the time.

5

u/MatureUsername69 14h ago

One of the most common evolutionary features you'll see in domesticated animals is floppy ears, there's been some animals that we've gotten to go from wild to domesticated floppy ears within 25 to 50 years of breeding. Cats are not one of those animals.

I get to see the slow flex of the murder mitten. Slowly, black paw descends towards my face, claws extended until I get a poink, poink, poink from the nails, just enough to almost hurt. I don't know why she has to be so dramatic and does this in slo-mo.

Thankfully, my other darling uses her paws like big velvet cushions to tap me with when she wants pets.

I think it’s instinctive part of grooming. Cats will bite their own fur if it’s rough or hard to get any of the knots out.

However humans skin almost always feels off compared to their own fir. So I think they bite without even realizing what’s going on.

55

u/julia_vz 16h ago

she looks like my poppy! who will also attack me majority of the time if i attempt to pet and gives me these love bites as well😂 with winter around she’s been a little more cuddly and actually laying up against me (still not allowed to pet though) got her off of a farm where she was struggling to survive with 5 dogs. not sure if it’s their background or just the type of cat they are but definitely feisty! but it just makes their sweet moments even more precious🥹

Sometimes they need to make sure you are paying attention to their boundary. It can be a sign they are getting overstimulated or they don’t like the spot you’re touching or the way they are being held.

Edit: my cat Inky was the most affectionate boi ever, all up in my grill, loving on me, purring. Suddenly he would smack me. That meant he had enough. In his case, his limit came up on him suddenly and he’d let me know with a whack. It was very surprising cuz he would still be purring. Eventually I got to know when to stop before I got smacked. Lol

5

u/BreathingGirl000 16h ago edited 16h ago

How dare you!

Edit: Cats have little whiskers not only on their eyebrows and above their mouths, but also on their legs. When they get brushed even slightly it can create a lot of sensation for the cat. It can be annoying or irritating to them. The whiskers are super sensitive. That’s why cat food dishes are so shallow: so the sides of the bowl don’t disturb the whiskers too much.

Every morning when my girl wants me to wake up and feed her she jumps on my chest and starts kneading on the blanket, but every time she does this she moves closer and closer to the edge of the blanket and then "accidentally" gets skin on my neck or face to wake me up lol or she will just lick my face like the cat in the video and if I'm not moving she will give me a little bite.

She never bites or scratches hard, it's almost always playful. Only time she ever scratched me and put everything she had into it was when she was freaking out at a stray cat that was on the outside of the glass in my apartment. She was making ungodly screeches and I tried to pull her away and shut the blinds and she scratched the shit out of my hand. Used to have a scar there for 3-4 years but now it's finally starting to go away

u/CatKungFu 13h ago

It’s a love bite.. the cat is all overcome with love and affection.. it’s saying I feel so close and safe and I trust you.

4

u/HatsuneTreecko 16h ago

You require the chomp

4

u/Economy-Bid8729 16h ago

They bite you beacuse they love you. The bites are play bites. Our girl will love, love, love, and then wants to play and playing is biting and fighting because it's so exciting! She wants to be chased, fought, taken to ground and then get up and go after you. That small bite is an invite to play like a cat.

5

u/XandersCat 16h ago

You has flavor.

4

u/ProminenceGenesis 16h ago

Cats often use gentle bites as a way of showing affection. Such bites are light and painless. If during the game your pet begins to show aggression and bite harder, this may indicate that he is interested in the game process, where you are the prey.:7952::7952::7952:

5

u/luckygirl54 14h ago

You are being 'de-flea' ed by your cat. He is grooming you out of love.

5

u/Puzzled-Antelope1 14h ago

Soft meaty.. mm. nomnom

4

u/favouriteghost 13h ago

Sharp kiss

4

u/ConstantGeographer 12h ago

You moved your head ever so slightly. She gripped you with her teeth to tell you to "hold still while I love you"

4

u/TinyDuckInASuit 11h ago

when cats bite their own fur it releases oils from their skin that keeps their coat glossy and clean!

4

u/over9ksand 10h ago

I can hear this!

4

u/PumpkinBrain 9h ago

Cats are instinct-ivised to grooming and playing with other cats. Cat fur provides resistance to teeth and claws. That sort of biting would be nothing to another cat, so they assume it’s nothing to you.

4

u/hahagato 9h ago

They sometimes “bite” when grooming to get into their fur deeper. I think she just forgot you don’t have fur lol

Love. Your cat loves you and is cleaning you like family. It's a compliment. My cat nibbles on me when she's licking incessantly as well.

8

u/UncleFunky1001 17h ago

It's just a love bite. It clearly didn't hurt. Your cat was just expressing love for you.

Cats are weird that way..

9

u/Hefty_Carpenter_5717 16h ago

It does it to kill a possible flea, its not that you got them, just part of the process of cleaning, removing some skin and fur and possible bugs.. they want you clean you know? “Clean”

5

u/NeoLocutus 16h ago

That’s their way of telling you that they love you (at least when they bite like the cat in the video)

3

u/jakoobie6 16h ago

Why? Cat.

3

u/Katongadeth 16h ago

It’s just another sign of affection. If the bite came with an aggressive twisting of the skin, then it would be an issue. Clearly this kitty loves you.

3

u/Re_alism Singapura 16h ago

Bite of love

3

u/RichRichieRichardV 16h ago

My mom used to call those love bites!

3

u/touchmeinbadplaces 16h ago

he loves you

3

u/Zestyclose-Camp3553 15h ago

Because cats are assholes

3

u/PrancingRedPony 15h ago

If you had fur, he'd bite your fur to comb through it in search for fleas. Their instincts tell them to do it, but mid-bite they realise there's no fur, so no fleas, so they stop combing and return to the liking cycle

3

u/Marsupialize 15h ago

You’ve seen them groom themselves and other cats, the nibble is part of the grooming

3

u/OfficialMortonSalt 15h ago

So you've never seen something so cute you want to bite it?

Kiss kiss bite bite, thems the rules....

u/carlyfriesxoxo 14h ago

My bf and I adopted a 3 month old kitten together (now 2.5 years old). I alone feed him (along with the other animals because otherwise the cats get fed extra) and clean the litter boxes. Yet my bf gets this affection and I am merely the attendant :7944:

3

u/muchandquick 14h ago

I had a tabby that would give me love bites on the nose while I was petting him. He was very careful not to bite too hard and it was fine until the one time he hooked a fang on the inside of my nostril and freaked out.

3

u/Every_Finding6297 13h ago

He's grooming you because you're a packmate.

A well groomed pack has an evolutionary advantage because they'll have less flees, ticks, etc. If you've got something in your fur that your tongue can't get out, just use your teeth. He's deep in grooming mode so his instinctual brain just hit the wrong button (why are "lick" and "bite" beside of each other?!).

Also, as a rule, you don't groom someone you don't care about. And you only groom someone this thoroughly if you really care about them. Like, "this is my favorite person" level of caring.

3

u/Kiki1577 11h ago

Absolutely a Love bite. Cats do it to show affection. And also because they consider you theirs.

3

u/NoRoutine591 11h ago

It's a love nip!

3

u/shifty_coder 10h ago

Cats bite during mutual grooming. It’s basically their way of saying “hold still. I’m not done.”

3

u/MarcoYTVA 10h ago

For the tough stains

3

u/Imnacho408 8h ago

I love the kitty bites! They never hurt you. Just showing love!

3

u/TizBeCurly 8h ago

It's like the cat version of cute aggression bite

3

u/sikethatsmybird 8h ago

Because cat.

3

u/MadisonStyyle 7h ago

It's called Love bite! So adorable.

3

u/ComfortableDay4888 6h ago

Cats do that when grooming themselves.

3

u/Common_Alfalfa_3670 6h ago

Just checking to see what you taste like in case you dîe in your apartment alone and nobody comes to find you for a few days.

3

u/pearlrose85 3h ago

He loves you. My tuxedo does this all the time. He gives a bunch of kisses and then a nip, and then goes back to kisses. He does it to his brother too. My other cat is not affectionate; we're lucky to get to pet him some days. He never gives kisses at all.

2

u/No-Bee-2085 16h ago

Feed me human or I will be forced to eeeeeeeeeat you

2

u/Careless-Shelter6333 16h ago

Just a little bite, see what it tastes like - Nacho

2

u/ExpertFault 16h ago

Because after few licks it was clear you are delicious so naturally your cat wanted to take a bite.

2

u/signmeupnot 16h ago

Thought you were food for a second.

2

u/MarsScully 16h ago

Intrusive thoughts won

2

u/Lunamy809 15h ago

I think of it as a love bite

2

u/luvcatsmeowmepw 15h ago

For cats washing their fur, little bites feel really good, and cats don't understand that you're a human so they can sometimes bite you but in a affectionate way 😸😸

2

u/SockeyePicker 15h ago

Tasty hooman

2

u/TrustLock 15h ago

Cats give "love bites" as a kind of kiss to show their love

2

u/Un-Seen-One 15h ago

Part of their grooming involves a small bite to help with the cleaning process. Also could be a love bite. The bites are never very hard.

2

u/actsqueeze 15h ago

It’s called a love bite!

2

u/Middle-Noise-6933 15h ago

When my cat does this when she’s grooming me, I always say she’s working her saliva in 🤣

2

u/omning 15h ago

Don’t kink shame
