2020 Hoyt Torrex XT or Matthew’s Switchback XT

I currently have a Matthew’s switchback XT Bow and am very new to bow hunting. Have someone offering a 2020 Hoyt Torrex XT fully kitted with release for 400. Which is better or is this even worth the upgrade?

Vent: Crossbows

This 100% Will come off as exclusive or too purist, but I really can’t stand most crossbow hunters.

I’m all for getting people into hunting, don’t get me wrong, but when grown men who are fully capable of pulling back 70+lbs are using a crossbow it really rubs me the wrong way. I’ve seen crossbow hunters brag about shooting over 75yds on a whitetail, have an arrogant attitude about hunting and also be the biggest complainers. It could just be my sample size but it just feels wrong. Like a man golfing from the woman’s tees or bowling with the gutter guards up. They seem to be very results oriented rather than process & skill oriented. It’s the same people that brag about shooting 5 deer from over 200yds away. Like that’s not even hunting or even close to it.

The traditional/compound bow hunters seem to be more willing to put in the time to scout, follow an outdoorsman lifestyle, respect the game & overall work hard.

Disclaimer: this does not include those who physically cannot bow hunt due to injury, age, strength, etc.

Trying to Decide Between a Hunting Bow and a Bowfishing Setup for Iguanas

Hey everyone, I could use some advice on a setup for hunting iguanas at around the 10-25 yard range. I live in Miami and iguanas are absolutely on every street and they get huge so they make some fun sport to shoot with bow and arrow. Back to the poent I’m deciding between using a hunting bow or a bowfishing bow. I know hunting bows have the range and precision I want, but I also like the idea of having a reel for retrieving arrows, since iguanas can be in dense areas where arrows might be hard to recover and since they are really small targets and really hard to make a kill shot in the brain so usual if u don’t make a kill shot they’ll run off into the nearest tree or body of water and die there. The issue is, bowfishing arrows don’t seem to have the same accuracy or range as hunting arrows because they’re heavier, lack fletching, and have line drag. On the flip side, tying a line to a carbon hunting arrow feels risky and unsafe because they’re not built for that kind of stress. Has anyone tried adapting a hunting bow for bowfishing-style use? Or should I just commit to one type of setup? I want precision and easy arrow recovery without compromising too much. I have a PSE Kingfisher recurve bow fishing bow and there’s a huge difference in between the feel of that and the feel of a hunting bow especially in accuracy and range. Any tips or setups that worked for you?

Advice

Looking at buying a bow, and have been to a few local shops near me. I narrowed it down to a Hoyt torrex XT for my first bow. While looking at another local shop i found a hoyt alpha x which is on clearance for around the same price possibly less gauging on similar msrp marked down bows. Looking at specs, they seem similar, but not educated enough to know if one is a better option than the other. I did not have time to demo the alpha x, but it did feel fairly similar to the torrex xt in my hand. Anyone able to share some insight, or their experiences between the 2? If it feels good to me, would the alpha be a better purchase than Torrex XT? Thanks for any insight yall may have.

Edit: Thanks for all the insight. I went back to my local shop and will be getting the alpha. Will be setting it up this week, and turned out to be less than the Torrex XT. Again thanks to everyone who commented on this post.

Trail cameras and battery life

Currently have four SPYPOINT Flex-M cameras I’ve had all four out since August 8th and they are pretty active roughly 150-300 photos per camera per day. My question is how long do you expect the battery’s to last? Both cameras finally just went below 100 percent. I’m using 8 energizer lithiums in each. I also get 4 updates a day. Is this just maybe the camera not reading the percentage right or is this pretty common with this brand? Coming from Browning cams without cellular and I used to get about three months of battery.

Looking for feedback on app idea!

Hi hunters and outdoor enthusiasts! 👋

I’ve been working on an app idea called Rack-It, designed specifically for hunters who want an easy and quick way to estimate the antler score of their harvested bucks. 🦌 The primary feature of the app would allow you to upload a photo of the rack, and using AI, it would calculate an estimated Boone and Crockett/Pope and Young score—gross and net—with just a few taps.

However, I want this app to be as useful as possible for hunters. While the main feature is antler scoring, I’m curious:

  • Would you use an app like this?
  • What other features would you like to see?
  • Would you pay for a full featured hunting app?

Some ideas I've considered include:

  • personal trophy gallery to organize and display your kills with details like score, date, and location.
  • Leaderboard or competitions for your hunting group, state, or beyond.
  • Manual scoring guides for those who prefer to measure themselves.
  • Hunting tips, maps, or gear recommendations integrated into the app.
• Social sharing options to show off your trophies in a way that celebrates ethical hunting.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! What would make an app like this indispensable for hunters? Are there any frustrations you have with existing scoring methods or tools that we could solve?

Thanks for your input—it’ll help shape something I hope can truly serve the hunting community! 🏹🦌

I am blessed because I am from New Jersey but this year my god-mother purchased a home with a couple acres in what is considered a suburb of Washington DC. With permission obviously granted, a license and bow stamp purchased and a camera set up… I couldn’t believe it when he showed up. With the snow they just got I rolled the dice and expected him to be on his feet. Excited for next year as I’ll put more work in. I’d say this is a buck in the 130s and maybe 165-170ish pounds dressed.

Learning to properly pull through my shot is a GAME CHANGER.

I was taught - or rather told - from the start to pull through my release, versus slamming the trigger. I comprehended the concept and knew tye importance, just like with rifle shooting. But, I shoot with an index finger trigger release, and in practice I could not figure out how not to make it a "suprise" release...I just couldn't see how I wouldnt know when I pull my finger back on the trigger.

I've been practicing a bunch, and all it took was seeing a random but simple you tube "short" video today, that demonstrated and explained that when ready to shoot, really you need to relax your wrist with the finger on the trigger and just pull through with your shoulders/back, which then makes your finger naturally pull the trigger.

It was like a light bulb went off, and I went to try it. Took a little bit to start to get but after a few shots, night and day difference in groupings. Literally, groupings were SO much tighter that I broke an arrow because I hit into the back notch of one.

Now I just gotta keep practicing it.

Poundage drop after string replacement?

I just had the strings and cables replaced on my Bear Species EV, as the old ones were starting to go. Brought it to the local shop and had them replaced with GAS high octane strings and cables.

The bow was at 70 pounds, with 30” draw with the old strings. I haven’t checked the draw length yet but it feels the same, however, I lost over 5 pounds of weight and it’s sitting at 65ish now, and the let off and draw cycle feels much different now.

Any advice? I’d like to be able to make it 70 pounds again, as I worked pretty hard to get up to that, and my arrows are built for shooting at 70 or higher.

Hard time focusing target!

I did my first post and got a great response from the community...and I thank you all for that. Now, here comes my first request for advice.

I am nearsighted (-1.5) and also with age comes presbyopia; I can focus clearly only on one of both, the intended target OR the peep on the string. Is there any lens or help or accessory that will help me focus clearly on both, the target and peep? Usually the prep and pins are blurry and target clearly focused...how do I correct this?
