Mass shootings and mass gun violence is a reason to put sensible restrictions in certain places

You do realize that all liberal states with the most restrictions on guns have the most gun shootings plus I've already explained how more guns is the anwser

We already don't let children have guns, or convicted felons....I guess you could call that restricting civil rights too

Convicted felons would technically be restrictions on rights as for children they do have guns they dont have handguns but they do have rifles

I'm just saying to conduct deeper background checks for young people, look into their social media and require them to provide character references, etc.....the overwhelming majority of Americans support things like this.

You can look up public opinion data on this, but I'm sure you won't. Republicans and Democrats both agree 70%+ that stricter background checks are a good thing. 90%+ believe that people with mental illness should be restricted from gun ownership.

Independents are not leaning right at all, Republicans still are competitive due to the electoral college and gerrymandering. But they haven't won a national popular vote since 2004. But given the Republicans massively expanding government involvement in reproductive healthcare, I think they're in freefall at the moment.

Uh no we're reading different articles you were right in the since of majority of Americans wrong in every other sense with exact statics and numbers 53% of independent (lean right) say gun laws are about. right 27% of independent say it needs to looser gun laws. 81% of lean left independent need more gun laws

According to the same website we're both loosing 53 of Americans total believe in stricter gun laws 47% believe there just right or need to be decreased which is alot lower then last year's 60% of Americans that believe in stricter gun laws and at the rate of the current president policies and approval rating dropping it will likely rise along with more Americans purchasing weapons it rose like 9% in the last year

The last point you made is a good one, there has definitely been something of a backlash to Democrats being in power and talking about gun restrictions. But again, asking about "gun laws" in the abstract is a bit misleading, because when you dig into the section about specific proposals, far more people seem open to higher restriction.

This leads me to believe that when asked generally "should guns laws be more strict," a lot of Americans picture their guns being seized or taken from them, but then when actually presented with proposals like expanded background checks or laws on criminals or mentally ill people purchasing guns, or banning certain forms of weapons, they are in favor.

I am a gun owner, myself and many gun owners I know are totally fine with banning high capacity magazines and heavy assault weapons, and so on and so forth. Those weapons are NEVER used in self defense, they are almost universally used to attack innocent people in mass shootings. And the idea that the kid from Uvalde for example who had red flags all over his social media and was threatening to kill people can just waltz up and buy a gun is absurd.

There was a mom that in I wanna say Texas that recently used a gun to kill her boyfriend who was in the middle of raping her 16 year old daughter a man broke into a house in California and tried to rape his daughter the father chased him down and killed him guns are used for self defense all the time but it's more then that guns aren't a privilege to protect yourself from each other there a right and a guartee to protect yourself from your own government there trying to ban 9mms cause Biden believes the bullet could knock out your lung if there was no restrictions on the type of guns for people buy then America would be at it's safest and people would die but they would have to live with the conquence of death themselves if more Americans took actions to protect there rights also go ask any republican gun owner his opinion on banning guns he won't agree with stricter gun policies I guartee it

I believe in the right to own weapons for self defense. I am totally fine with that, I am a part of that group. But again, making sure people buying guns are not mentally ill lunatics that are threatening violence doesn't really prevent law abiding citizens from accessing and holding weapons for self defense.

It really is sick that every time sensible restrictions are brought to the table that most Americans support, people lose their minds and act as if the government is going to break down your door and confiscate your weapons. It's just a fear tactic with no basis in reality. I am not afraid of my guns being confiscated.

If someone is showing public signs and is stupid enough to post it on social media sure dont sell them a gun but us sane people dont need are whole life checked and watched by the us government because the moment it's the government job to ensure everyone is checked the moment America is fucked it should be between the person selling you the gun and the person buying the gun period
