Research question
Hello all, I am an amateur writer. My current novel takes place during the height of the napoleonic era. Takes inspiration from authors like O’Brian, Lambden, and James L. Haley. And while I understand most of jargon (thanks Falconer’s!) I’m lacking in operational understanding. I could really use a good in depth “how it works” for full rigged ships. I’m more visual than anything else. Studying sail plans is what helped a lot of terminology click. So books or better yet visual media that has a tutorial-esque feel. Anyone have any pointers?

i presume you have read: sailing around the world alone by slocome, and two years before the mast by dana

another is some common terms you may know or could work into the story
ie: the phrase: he knows the ropes..today it means he is smart. however back in the day it mentioned the opposite, ie you are an idiot. background: you where on the ship for two years and when you signed off the captain wrote you are an able seaman(meaning you are smart!) , or at least he knows the ropes (dumb!) and did not learn much
to cut and run: means a storm is coming you do not have time to raise the anchor, attach a float to the anchor and cut the anchor and run with the wind away or you die crashed upon the rocks. you will come back later and use the ships gear to “fish the anchor” (you hope the float is still attached) because there are no anchor stores where you are going
the effects of scurvy… the human body cannot create vitamin c other animals can. the lack of vitamin c means all of your old wounds start to break open and you bleed again. rancid meat with worms… yummy… how many sailors had worms?
q: so you just sat on the seat of ease… how do you clean the bum? answer: there is a long rope dangling / dragging in the water covered in sea-life you pull it up knock the sea life off and clean the bum… drop it back in the water for the next person to use… hmm would / could you get sea worms in your bum from this? or other critters?
read about the lost boys and the manilla galleons
