I do not get it. What is cool about it? He is basically dead, not pursuing things, not serving society.

I get that, but he's old. Who's to say he didn't contribute his fair share to the world and then wants to enjoy time to himself? And I'd imagine someone could still pursue things and have hobbies while being a hermit. Just not social things
