Moldova is safe?
34
25
u/fk_censors 28d ago
Yes, there's almost no violence against regular people. It's probably a little worse than in the safest European places because their Mafia is more violent (and the Russian Mafia operates there), but they usually just target other criminals and don't bother regular people. Moldova is also more volatile from a geopolitical point, because it has a separatist area and Russian troops and a Russian arsenal on its soil. But it's super safe for tourists, just like any other European country without a large Russian or non European immigrant population.

It’s not that bad, I’ve been there a couple of times, people are really chill and I’ve never felt unsafe.

Pal, if you wanna travel to Russia, I'll I’ll meet you at the airport, man, you can literally stay with me for your entire vacation. We'll make borscht with you, go fishing. You look at the life of the province, at least something interesting will happen in my life... (Trust me, I'm not a KGB agent :)
7
u/No_Machine_8001 28d ago
No offence to you of course, I know there are good normal people in Russia, but traveling to a country you are indirectly supporting its government–both economically and spritually (for the lack of a better word). Same reason I don't want to travel to North Korea or Iran. Also it's scary going to a country where you could be jailed for using the wrong words. But I genuinly hope to be able to travel there in the future :)

Some war is no reason to hate the Russian population and collectively punish their society. I've seen maybe thousands of comments with thousands of likes each, saying all Russians are evil and shouldn't be alive, all since the war began. Editing a dead Russian soldier who was an 18 year old conscript to disparage him is a dick move.
2
u/Character-Mix174 28d ago
I'm honestly more concerned with the fact you visit places where you can find something like that than with the fact that it exists.
Because you present it as some widely accepted mainstream opinion, and it isn't. Not in the world, not in the west, not even in Ukraine
6
u/propylhydride 28d ago
I don't "visit" those places. It was under quite normal tweets and news stories on Twitter at the start of the war. My Russian friend showed me the rest. (He does not support Putin and he doesn't live in Russia.)

For most of the Slavic countries, like Portugal, Russians made it’s name waaaay before the war. The way how they tend to act with the superiority complex is awful. It can easily be a loud minority, but with some nationalities it just happens more often and they are one of them.

Generally the ”hate” towards the average russian stems from the average russians acceptance of the governments actions. Your average russian is not going to condemn their governments actions as long as they got bread on their table - as in, they do not care about others lifes as long as theirs is okay. The average russian is very imperialistic still.

You seriously cannot be acting like Russians are the only people who don't condemn the actions of their government. I'm still waiting for an apology as an Afghan from the average American. They think they're heroes. Their military is filled with genocidal maniacs who have destabilized dozens of countries, committed genocides and massacres, and who serve under an institution that has launched at least 251 military interventions since 1991 alone. But the United States is above international law and condemnation. Furthermore, the average Russian doesn't criticize the government because he DOES get what he needs from the government. They are extremely detached from any wars their country participates in.

Sweden safer than Denmark?! I guess gunshot deaths don’t count…
→ More replies2
u/FlaviusStilicho 27d ago
About four people gets murdered by way of firearms in Denmark each year. In Sweden it was 53 last year… if you normalise for population it would be 8 vs 53. In neighbouring Norway there were 11 which would be about 22 if you normalise for Sweden’s population size.
Sweden is much higher, but it’s still not high enough to be a real concern for tourists
→ More replies2
u/ValeteAria 26d ago
It definitely isnt. Unlike the US most firearm deaths in Sweden and Denmark are within the criminal circuit. A random tourist in Stockholm is not going to be the target. A drug dealer in a ghetto? More like it.

I get that Belarus and Russia are very 'dangerous' due to political reasons, but what did Germany and Belgium did to receive a careful rating?
→ More replies9
u/Haunting-Detail2025 28d ago
It’s about terrorism. But to be clear, the state department doesn’t assign grades in the way many other countries do - it goes by relative rankings in some places. So if there’s an increased risk of terrorism in Sweden, it might get a level 2 (exercise increased caution) warning because they’re saying there’s a risk you may not think about, whereas a country that regularly is a little more dangerous might be at a level (exercise NORMAL precautions) because there’s nothing abnormal about the situation there - but it doesn’t mean the place is totally safe.
Level 2 is applied to a lot of places depending on events - for instance, if there’s an election and there are fears of big protests a country might get one. But it doesn’t mean it’s inherently unsafe, it just means you should be aware of a new circumstance. Level 3 and 4 are more “yeah this place is dangerously and you should think twice before booking a trip there”

u/Pretend_Market7790 26d ago
Lol at Russia being more dangerous than the UK. I've lived in both. Never saw a murder, let alone multiple murders in Russia. In Russia you get treated like a king if American. Some things are annoying, like visas, and registering in hotels, but that's for everyone.
Italy, Spain, and France have many no-go zones, and Sweden does too. This is just arbitrary nonsense. Even the Ukraine while being bombed is safer than the UK.
Immigration has changed the mood of Europe. You feel it and it's not good. The safest country on this list is Belarus too. It's just so illogical.

u/Trgnv3 28d ago
Moscow is magnitudes safer than any large US city, unless you are traveling to Russia to make political statements.
→ More replies5
u/Haunting-Detail2025 28d ago
It’s because Russia imprisons people for leverage for swaps, not because of petty or street crimes. The state department travel advisory makes that abundantly clear
2
u/Trgnv3 27d ago
Russia has been on the "do not travel" list long before the invasion started and any prisoner exchanges were happening. This also isn't true just for Russia, the state department is generally very cautious with its advice, which maybe is good, but also kind of ironic since many US cities are more dangerous than the countries they declare as such.
Would love to see the state department make travel advisories for Baltimore, Detroit, etc.

u/Igor_McDaddy 28d ago
Russia is quite safe, actually
It's not like you're gonna get robbed moment after you step out of a plane. The biggest threat here (especially in larger cities) is different kinds of scam, but that's the case everywhere I believe
10
u/Logical_Marsupial140 28d ago
I think the bigger issue is being arrested for a bogus charge so that you can be used for a prisoner swap. I think any American would be an idiot to travel to Russia right now.

The most dangerous, apart from terroristic threats that don’t exist, are probably Turkey and Russia. In Turkey, particularly Istanbul, you risk getting shaken down by thugs and unscrupulous bar owners. In Russia, you risk being totally ignored in the case of an emergency.

I’m a dual U.S. German citizen that has gone to school, worked and lived in both countries. I went to Chicago public schools and have seen some stuff in my day. In the 90’s, I lived in Bonn, Germany. I lived in an apartment building outside the city center and there was a Turkish gang there called the Chicago kings. They would spray paint it everywhere and cause havoc. My wife is Serbian and we do visit Serbia to smaller cities and villages and I feel a hell of a lot safer in Serbia than in some parts of Germany

I live in Bulgaria. For all of the many, many bad things that are true about my country (and the Balkans in general), it is far, far safer for everyday life, especially going out after dark compared to Western Europe or the Unites States. I can say the same for neighbouring countries like Greece, Romania, Serbia, Turkey.
Even considering that crime has worsened in my city over the past 10-15 years, I never felt unsafe or outright afraid when going out at night, as I did while living and working in London and NYC. Back in my broke ass school and uni years, I would regularly walk back home for a couple of hours after midnight crossing much of the city after a night out with friends or staying with my girlfriend; never had any trouble.
I've done that twice in London (about a decade ago) and once in NYC, and I would never repeat. Same can be said about other wealthy cities I've visited, Luxemburg, Milan, etc. London being the worst by far.
So, yes, if you're a tourist, the Balkans are quite safe. You are likely to get scammed by a taxi driver but unless you do something truly stupid, you should be alright even out at night.

It’s rated for violence or crime targeted towards you because you’re an American. I’m pretty sure countries like France are an orange because of tension with migrant Muslim populations and ISIS cells and so on.
I live in a country with a much higher crime rate but is orange because of Boko Haram. The problem is it’s easy to become orange.
