As a French person, I think it's because of the way the question is being asked. If you ask a French person if our culture is better, it sounds to arrogant to say yes. We don't consciously think our culture is better than others. It's more of an unconscious thing. However if you ask us directly if our bread, fashion, music is superior than we will more likely say yes.

I would say modern Turks are basically Muslim Greeks.

Of course, but this is fair for any old enough nation. Ancient Egyptians for example are much more different to modern Egyptians than ancient Greeks to modern Greeks. At least modern Greek language is inherited from ancient Greek. Modern Egyptian Arabic isn't related to ancient Egyptian at all.

Anyway modern Greeks are the closest nation to ancient Greek among all existing nations for today.
