ChatGPT (AI) Policy

HORT310 Plant Propagation with Cara Still is the first class I have taken at OSU to have a ChatGPT (AI) policy. I think it is fair and I like the full disclosure aspect. Your thoughts?

ChatGPT usage in class In this class, you are allowed to use AI programs (ChatGPT for example) to help brainstorm, collect information, and generate ideas. Whatever information you collect from it must be framed in your own words and supported by content covered in class. You do not need to use AI tools if you don’t want to.

To ensure that you are both citing ChatGPT or other AI properly and reframing information in your own words, below are some guidelines for usage to adhere to. Use of ChatGPT or other AI tools without following these guidelines will result in a 0 score on discussion efforts.

  1. If using ChatGPT, Save the chat you used to generate ideas for your post. Copy the link using the share chat icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Paste the chat link below your discussion post for others to see.

Example of chat link: https://chat.openai.com/share/ff9f2a4d-1a6c-4d5b-9e88-5972fcd1c8b1 If you are using another AI tool, cite the tool at the end of your post instead. This is a helpful link for citing AI tools to get you started.

  1. You may not copy/paste ChatGPT answers straight as your discussion effort. Instead, reframe the information in your own words and take care to verify truth of information. Remember that this tool still has tendency to ‘hallucinate’, or make up information and citations, so everything must be verified. To this end you are not allowed to post numbered lists. Instead, everything must be written in full sentences in paragraph format.

Seems reasonable but what is the logic behind the prohibiting "numbered lists?" --- esp since the policy itself is numbered.

My guess is that numbered/bulleted lists are a common way for ChatGTP and the like to present information. So instead of going through the work every time to see if the list was made by AI, the instructor just bans numbered lists.

I’m an adjunct for another course, and anytime I see a numbered or bulleted post, my AI alarm bells go off and I check to see if ChatGPT made the post.

I read it as I can have numbered lists as long as I created them and not ChatGPT? In some instances, a numbered list is way more logical than typing everything out in paragraph form. I personally prefer paragraph form though.

chatgpt is a tool like a calculator. it can help put things into words or revise your work, but you need to know what you’re asking it and how to do so in a way that you get the right answer (i.e. provide it with citeable information to help frame a paper) or you’ll get the wrong answer.

no matter how you use either you still need to know what you’re asking before you do so you get the right result
