Hey everyone. I’m posting in here because I cannot find info on it anywhere else. I moved from NY a few years ago for so many obvious reasons, but I have friends and family back there. I play to visit in a few weeks and want to bring my “new” M1 Garand to show my friends and grandpa (who carried one in Korea). Now I know I would be able to bring it legally before semi-auto permits were put in place, but I’m not sure if those would apply to me. I know it’s completely illegal to bring a handgun because of CCPs, and NY doesn’t issue to non NY residents. Thanks in advance for any information you guys may have

Hi all, happy new year.

I just had a very disheartening talk with the lawyer I was going to hire to attempt to get my firearm rights restored. Hoping to gain some insight from people who have gone through this process or know the ins and outs of it.

Some background: I was convicted of a class E felony for attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 5th degree (cocaine) and DWI which ran concurrently and was sentenced to 5 years probation. This was in 2009. I have since had no legal issues, finished probation after only 2.5 years, completed inpatient and outpatient treatment, received my citizenship, graduated both undergrad and graduate school at the top of my class, received a physician assistant and DEA license in NY and am a practicing PA in cardiac surgery, have been sober for almost 15 years and attend AA and have nothing but positive references since turning my life around.

I applied for a certificate of relief about a year and a half ago, not understanding much of the process, but in hopes to restore my right to possess firearms. I was denied without reservation or reason. I then spoke with a lawyer, who at the time told me to reapply, and when I get inevitably denied again (because this is typical for NY) to file an article 78 and appeal, which I would have a good chance of winning since my case is quite good.

I received a letter for the denial of the second application of the certificate of relief. I promptly called the same law firm, however spoke with 2 different lawyers who told me 2 very different things from what I was told months ago. First they told me my application was a mess. I can't really see how as I sent all documents proving everything I mentioned above; finishing probation, rehab, professional licenses, transcripts, etc. They then told me filing an article 78 would be an uphill battle, not to mention damn expensive. I looked more into this appeal and apparently it's almost never won, basically saying you have to prove that the judge who denied the certificate was somehow factually wrong in doing so.

I was so encouraged after filing the 2nd time. But after speaking with the lawyers that has changed. I'm so bummed as I really wanted to try and start getting into hunting this winter. Does anybody have insight into my dilemma? I'm really unsure of how to proceed. Right now all I can think of is wait a few months and reapply for the certificate again but hire a lawyer so I don't submit a "messy" application. Thanks for reading my story. Cheers.

Has anyone applied and received their Mass Non Resident CCW license? Based on the approved course the NY state concealed carry and safety course is an approved course. Do you still have to go in person for a photo and prints?

Moved from Broome to Tioga County 3 months ago and was looking to get my pistol permit but this is insane. Everyone I know who isn't my SO is in a different county. I've only even talked to like 1 neighbor so far. Wtf can I do? As someone originally from California this is insane we just had to take a test there.

Well, against everyone’s advice I reached out to the PD and had a long chat. The result of the long chat? A Herter’s 357 and an Arminius HW7 .22LR, straight from the evidence locker (to a nearby FFL, who transferred them to a FFL in NY, who released them to me…)

Going for the non-res NYC special carry have a paper copy keeping track of what I need to upload, but I was wondering if there’s a way to see the actual uploaded documents in the system just to verify I’m not missing anything.

As someone who was not a gun owner or knew anything about licenses 15 months ago, I wonder what I would have done if I saw a guy reaching for cheerios in the supermarket and his gun was visible. I know it sounds silly but living in America and living in NY are two very different things.

I don't know if it is my community or if I grew up different, but I only saw guns on police. Are there people who would scream or call the police, if someone printed and they caught it or a shirt flew up in the wind and their barrel was showing.

The rise in licensing is intense since the law changes. Am I wrong, or can getting spotted be a very big deal even if you're doing nothing wrong? This is NY so people don't feel the 2A even if they know about it.

Hello all. Has anyone flown out of MacArthur with firearms? My wife and I are going to Florida next week and I’ll be taking my daily carry with me. I have gone out of JFK, LGA and Westchester with firearms, but never MacArthur. Aside from the usual locked case, unloaded, ammo separate, etc, is there anything special I should know related to this airport specifically? Thank you in advance.

What the average price on getting the carry permit in nyc. How much is everything

Anyone ever heard of Armsta Training division? They are offering a free 18 hr course at the Phoenicia Fish and Game Association. Never heard of them or the training group. I checked out the website on secured machine so ensure no viruses or anything and it seems legit. The registration was through Eventbrite, so I don't believe its a scam.

I can't seem to really find any info, but they seem to be offering free classes. Anyone here familiar with them?

Covered counties Our Course is approved by Ulster, Greene, Dutchess, Delaware, Otsego, Westchester, and Rockland County. Monroe, Orange and Putnam County will also accept our course.

So not sure if my title is correct. I’m certain many if not all CCW holders imagine scenarios and how one would respond. So my question is, are derringers, you know, the kind the good dentist used in Django or that James West used in the Wild Wild West, legal in NY. A buddy told me they are not legal in NY but I don’t know what based that on. Sometimes he just likes to always have the answer when he really doesn’t.

Does anyone know of any ranges where I’d be able to rent pistols? I have already been to the Medford Shooting Range which rents pistols, but their selection is pretty limited. Any suggestions are appreciated!

I called the NY state police and found out that NY state does not reciprocate FOIDs from any other state?!! And I found the requirements to get a pistol permit in NY state quite ridiculous. I need 5 reference letters from 5 different local residents who are not my relatives. Why is it so hard to get a firearms license in NY? I don't understand

These laws are confusing and sorry if this was already brought up but I believe the YouTube channel “Gun Owners of America” were fighting against Hochul’s Conceal Carry Improvement Act and there was some type of a win. Anyone have any updates?

Also toward the end of the middle paragraph it says NYSP are not currently enforcing this provision. Does that mean you can carry on private property without the owners expressed consent to a certain extent such as stores and restaurants but not the obvious stadiums, schools, government buildings etc or are the restricted locations still being enforced?
