Some assholes dumped a litter of puppies in the woods across from our property. Are they even from the same litter though? Possibly Solved
We’ve had them for a week now. All five are girls. Three look like black labs, one looks like a rottie, and the fifth has a potcake coat. The vet estimates about 8 weeks old and agrees they are likely mixed with black lab, but the potcake (brown one) confuses us. And now we’re even more confused with the newest find, the rottie.
Please wish the two injured ones a speedy recovery! The black one may require amputation. Vet said they were injured from landing too hard (probably thrown from a car) but is hopeful their legs will heal as they grow. They were wrapped on their second vet visit because they were playing too rough, and are now separated from their non-disabled sisters.
If by some miracle the people who dumped them see this post, FUCK YOU. I hope there were only five, because any others would have perished to the heat, coyotes, or hawks by now. We spent four days scouring the land trying to save them before the inevitable happened.
If you cannot take care of your puppies or find them homes, TAKE THEM TO A SHELTER. NOT A RURAL BACKROAD, they will NOT survive on their own out here. Dumping dogs in the countryside is a death sentence, they aren’t bred for the wild!!
Sorry for the vent, I’m still raw about it.

My dog looked just like the "rottie" as a puppy and had two littermates that looked black lab-ish. My dog's Embark says he's a mix of Boxer, Husky, Beagle, GSD, Supermutt, and some other things.
Wishing the injured ones a speedy recovery and hope those assholes who threw them rot in hell!

u/attack_and_release Jul 02 '24
Sounds like you’ve got a super healthy dog with that mix of genes! They may all be super mutts lol!
I have to believe in karma for some relief though. The stress this has caused on our hearts and our wallets is immense. I was crying thinking there were more out there we couldn’t save.

Consider starting a Go Fund Me for their vet care. Thank you for saving them!

Thankfully our local vet is very sympathetic and has been discounting services! One of the techs wants to adopt one too! If the lil one needs an amputation, we will likely need to start a go fund me for her tho.

u/faroffland Jul 03 '24
Start a go fund me and I will donate for her. I’m serious - please reply back to my comment with the link if she needs surgery.

If you start a go fund me, can you reply to this message? I’d like to donate. I can’t imagine taking care of this many puppies but it must be exhausting. And the best ever. But exhausting.

u/attack_and_release Jul 03 '24
I’m not sure where I would post it or if mods in other dog subs would allow it, we are considering making one because they toys / kennels / food on top of our (financially generous) vet has been adding up, we just don’t like asking for help lol. We wanted to ID to know what kind of owners should be taking them (kid, pet friendly breeds or guardian, prey-drive breeds)

If the mods don’t let you post it, see if you can make an edit bout having it posted on your main profile

So, a little known thing is that Labradors can also have color-points (like a Rottie). It’s not common, but it is naturally occurring within the breed and can easily become a dominant trait when combined with another pairing that could also carry it.
31
u/attack_and_release Jul 02 '24
I just googled this and I’ll be damned, the rottie looks just like a black lab with those recessive tan color points! Still wondering about the brownie though, the coat just looks like common mutt to me.
21
u/theAshleyRouge Jul 02 '24
Yeah that sable-type brown coat is probably one of the most common “mutt” colors out there. It’s in everything from chihuahuas to GSDs and everything in between.
9
u/attack_and_release Jul 02 '24
It’s so odd that four look like labs, and she’s just entirely different. Vet said she had shorter ears than the labs too.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this to us, this was very informative! Truly learning more and more about them here!
9
u/Bluewalkie Jul 03 '24
With mix breeds every single one can look different because different genes can resurface and give them specific look. I think they are all the same litter, just different variations :)
4
u/lil_miss_sunshine13 Jul 03 '24
These babies are definitely part working line GSD imo... Not rotties.
7
u/attack_and_release Jul 03 '24
Getting a lot of comments that would agree with you. Many seem to think GSD x Lab. They’re growing fast too!

u/Kailsbabydaddy Jul 02 '24
This is cute because my dog was black and her brother looked like the brown one here and it turns out her main breed from embark was rottie 😂😂
5
u/theAshleyRouge Jul 02 '24
Definitely still 100% possible for sure! They’re a bit too young to get an accurate guess in right now. I was just pointing out that the color-points dont necessarily rule out Labrador as a major contributing breed.
3
u/the_littlestgiant_ Jul 03 '24
This! I learned this when I got my girl (she looks just like the pup in question) from a litter of Heeler mixes (DNA test has her 75% heeler).
22
u/Accomplished-Wish494 Jul 03 '24
They could have different fathers. Even if not, when you have mixed breeds on top of mixed breeds…. You never know what will pop out. That “rottie” could also get markings like that from a hound, a dobie, I’ve even seen beagle crosses and shepherd mixes with that sort of coloration.
5
u/attack_and_release Jul 03 '24
Yes someone corrected me on this! Apparently there is a recessive gene in labs that have similar color points as rotts and dobies. She definitely looks like a lab with that recessive gene after some googling. Which is honestly a relief tbh, or else I’d be stressing about finding experienced owners who can handle a rottie mix.

u/Mykirbyblue Jul 03 '24
I raised a litter of black lab/German Shepherd puppies. They all started out black, except for one that was a dark brown. As they got older, two of the solid black puppies started to get those brown areas on their face and their legs and their chest. It was the German Shepherd coloring coming out. I don’t know exactly how one of those two turned out as an adult, but I kept the other and he looks exactly like a German shepherd with floppy ears. And I guess he has a face that is shaped more like a lab. But when those brown areas started appearing, they looked very much like what I’m seeing in your pictures. So it could just as easily be German Shepherd as Rottweiler. And the one that was brown, stayed brown. He was just brown all over although some areas were darker than others. But the coloring was much darker than what I’m seeing on the little guy in your pictures. Looks like I can’t post a picture here so I’ll try putting some up and add a link in a few minutes.

u/attack_and_release Jul 03 '24
Would be super grateful to see what your litter looked like! German Shepard are a very popular breed in my area too, so this could totally check out for us
4
u/Mykirbyblue Jul 03 '24
Sadly I lost a bunch of my photos of them as they were pups and growing up. I got a new phone and did everything I was supposed to do to transfer my stuff from iCloud but somehow when I went into iCloud to look at my photos, it was missing about 2/3 of them. It included some very important pictures and videos of my son And some performances he was in so I’m still furious about it.But I was able to pull some of their puppy pictures off my Facebook page. So I posted the Imgur link in another comment and each of the photos have descriptions to give them some context. Let me know if you have any trouble with the link.

They are so fricking adorable, you legend for saving them!
Definitely could all be the same litter. My pup came from a husky X staffy X GSD mix litter and two looked like full huskies (I picked the girl out f these two) , one looked almost like a full staffy and the rest looked like supermutts.
6
u/attack_and_release Jul 03 '24
I’m no dog breeder so I’m learning a lot here! It’s really neat they can look like purebreds but really be mutts. I prefer the latter because I know they tend to be healthier dogs.
I am starting to think they are the same litter after posting here. They are upset and confused about the separation too, we feel so bad about it lol.
5
u/Legal_Opportunity395 Jul 03 '24
My sister and I were honestly shocked when two came out looking like full huskies. She screamed out to me "THERE IS TWO HUSKIES QUICK COME LOOK" and I couldn't believe my eyes. The one I picked, people get shocked when I tell them she is mixed with staffy, the only real indicator is that she has shorter fur than the average husky.
Aw lil babies! they will slowly be less stressed etc just be patient with the little bundle :)

u/gonnafaceit2022 Jul 03 '24
I'd be surprised if it wasn't the same litter, unless the person who dropped them had more than one litter, which wouldn't be surprising.
I recently found three puppies dumped at the park-- I actually saw the guy who dumped them from a distance and it looked sketchy so I looked around when I got back to the car and sure enough, three puppies came bounding out of the woods. Thankfully they were healthy and happy and adorable, and they got into a shelter straight away. I got a distant picture of the truck that dumped them, and I debated sending it to the cops even though the license plate wasn't readable.
I thought, at least he dumped them in the middle of the day at a park where they would likely be found pretty quickly. It's very sad to think that's lucky. But if he gets in trouble, next time he might dump them in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night, like so many people do.
A few weeks after that, I came upon three other puppies that had been dumped way out in the country on the back road, they were kind of scrawny and flea ridden, and it was very lucky we found them when we did.
The shelters are so overflowing and our laws are so lax regarding animals, they get dumped constantly. Our county doesn't even have an animal control officer anymore, and up until very recently, if you called about a stray dog, they were like 🤷🏼♀️. I felt very fortunate that the shelter could take the puppies both times, and I imagine most people are so used to that situation, they don't expect much from animal control.
But the people who are dumping puppies probably wouldn't go to the trouble of calling the shelter even if they knew they would take them. People suck. They always will. It definitely takes a village and some selfless, dedicated folks.

u/Tammyannss Jul 03 '24
Omg these poor babies. Thank goodness you found them! I hope they all heal up and no amputation is needed! May the motherfuckers that dumped them rot in hell!
10
u/contrabonum Jul 03 '24
They are so young it can be hard to tell, they all look like the could be from the same liter with the same father to me though.
7
u/attack_and_release Jul 03 '24
The vet pretty much said the same, I could try posting again when they grow a lil bit more
6
u/ls22087 Jul 03 '24
I have no idea about the breeds but I just wanted to say thank you for saving these babies and taking care of them. They are all so adorable and I hope they all find loving forever families 🥹
6
u/WinterBox358 Jul 03 '24
There are very heartless people in this world. I'm glad you found them and hope they find great forever homes. The only good thing, seems they cared enough to keep them with momma for the 8 weeks of nursing, but I really hope they are found and charged.
4
u/attack_and_release Jul 03 '24
I agree, we think this dump was calculated on their part. It’s all farmland and forest out here. We found three the first evening they were dumped, and it seemed like momma was caring for them. No fleas, a little skinny but they fattened up really quick. It’s also odd there were no boys, only girls.
2
u/WinterBox358 Jul 03 '24
By the way, you are awesome to be seeing them thru this.
6
u/attack_and_release Jul 03 '24
Thank you! The cat disagrees but she’ll get over it. We found her the same way as them lol
6
Jul 03 '24
Genetics are weird and when you're looking at a litter, it's not impossible to see different genes present in each pup so that they look like completely different dogs. I'd say these guys are all one little, they have a similarness to them despite the coats.
8
u/beaconofdarkness Jul 03 '24
mixed breed dogs can throw some insane genetic diversity in a single litter- think different recessive traits popping up!

u/Rivka333 Jul 03 '24 edited Jul 03 '24
Different colors are pretty normal in mixed breed litters. And even purebreds can have more colors than people realize. German Shepherds, for instance, can be almost any color except white.
While different fathers can be a thing, I don't see a reason to suppose that in this case.
Thank you for taking them in.

I’m glad they wound up with wonderful people! I don’t know if you’re keeping any of them but you have a wonderful heart! Wishing all of them, especially the 2 disabled ones, well! At least dogs tend to do really well after amputation.
3
u/SeasDiver Jul 03 '24
Yes, that can easily be the same litter. Litters may have multiple fathers, but with dog genetics, even with a single father, the color variation can be insane. Our first rescue whelping (birth) was of a shepherd mix momma and all her pups looked like her. Our next momma was a tan dog that gave birth to 3 white pups and 3 black pups; 5 had short fur, 1 had this curvy wavy ruffled fur. Our next tan momma had 3 white pups, 1 black pup, 1 brown pup, 1 white with brown spots, and 1 white with black spots. Some of our later litters were even more colorful.

u/ParentalAnalysis Jul 03 '24
Sable, black+tan and solid could easily have come from the same sire and dam.
Parent A has one copy of dominant K black over Ay/At, Parent B could be Ay/At and boom you've got all your options easy as that.
There are other ways to get this result but that's the simplest to explain.
3
u/Idkmannnnnnnbye Jul 03 '24

Definitely same litter they all look the exact same age and have similarities besides colour. I think possibly GSD/labs . I think the rottie pup looks more like a Shepherd cross to me. I’m so glad you were able to find them in-time , the country is no place for puppies…. Breaks my heart that someone could actually just dump a bunch of tiny puppies off into the wilderness 😢 Anyways great job saving them and taking such good care of them 💝

u/Tygress23 Jul 03 '24
I think based on development they are the same litter. My dog was from a litter of 7 and half were brindle and half were all black. Some had markings. Some were tall, some were short. Mixes create mixed results!

2
u/Ok_Emu_7206 Jul 03 '24
My dog is the brown color and the rest of the litter was black and a couple Rott color. Dad is a pure Corso and momma is a pure Rottweiler.

u/Fireflyinsummer Jul 03 '24
I am thinking Shepherd, Lab X Beagle or other type of Hound in the mix. Maybe Coon Hound.
2
u/Grouchy_Chard8522 Jul 03 '24
Especially if both parents are mutts, a litter can be really diverse in appearance. Genetics are fun! And with really mixed breeds, how those genes get expressed can be really random.

If we didn’t already have 2 puppies/young dogs, I would be begging to adopt lil Miss Number 5 - she is DARLING. Both of our dogs also came from dumped litters (2 different ones, they’re about 4 months apart). We don’t know what either set of parents looked like because the litters were found abandoned on the side of the road. They both look completely different from their siblings, so we have no clue what they are but they’re a lot of fun! Especially now that they’ve both hit the 1+ year mark… I hope your pillows are always cold, you always get the good parking spot, and that you can find adopters for these precious babies!

From the pictures, they definitely look like siblings to me! Just with different coloring. It happens. I don't even think they have different fathers, but that's possible too. Thank you so much for taking care of these precious babies. People make me sick, and I want anyone who treats animals this way to suffer greatly for their callousness.
Please link a go fund me here if you need help with the babies' vet bills! You can also make an Amazon wishlist for their care! Toys, treats, puzzles, supplies, etc. So people can contribute that way. They really are precious. I pray for continued healing, health, happiness, and loving homes for all of them when the time comes. Thank you again and good luck lol
2
u/attack_and_release Jul 03 '24
We are definitely considering it!! We just hate asking for money unless we absolutely need to.
The runt (black one with a bad leg) will need a GoFundMe if the vet orders an amputation or surgery to fix her leg. He said the brown one is healing because she keeps trying to use it, causing her to re-injure it. The black one refuses to use her leg at all, which indicates to him that it is possibly broken.

u/Frazzlebopp Jul 03 '24
Poor things.
As for if they are from the same litter, I would say yes. I know some people are saying that sometimes the same litter can even have different fathers (which is true), but it could just be a factor of the mix of the parents, especially if the parents are also mixed breed.
My dog is (from what I was told) a Golden Retriever (dad) x Lab/Shepherd (mom). Only 4/10 puppies looked like they were going to be long haired, 4/10 were some shade of blonde colour 4/10 were mostly white, 1 was black with brown legs, and 1 had German Shepherd colouring. They all looked pretty similar feature wise though, minus slight differences in the width of their faces (some leaning more towards the retriever look, and others towards the shepherd face). Genetics can be pretty crazy though - mine started off looking like a white lab, and grew up into looking like a blonde shepherd in a lab suit.
2
u/KorviFeather Jul 03 '24
I would definitely think they’re from the same litter. It’s totally not uncommon for litter colors to vary wildly and otherwise they’re all pretty alike. They have the same build, little floppy ears and cute little faces and they don’t seem to vary in size a lot. That would be my guess anyway.
2
u/Clatato Jul 03 '24
The black and tan one is especially adorable. She reminds me of a kelpie, a farm dog that’s common here in Australia, and very loyal and smart.

Once I had to take care of 5 puppies dumped in front of my house as well (their options on their own would be a street with a fair amount of movement or the property in the back with aggressive dogs and occasional snakes). I already had 2 cats and a dog, and until the end of last year I was still trying to get myself financially sorted from how much I spent on those puppies until I found them homes lol
I hope everything goes okay! On a bright side, if you leave them with some toys you see they are interested in (and mainly if they are toys that allow multiple dogs to play together) they might soon learn to entertain themselves on their own. I hope they all recover well

They look like it. I use to live in a house on my county line in the country...pasture land all around...a huge dump ground for pups and kittens.....became my avocation to take them in and find (some) homes. Ended up with 6 pups, 4 cats and a baby raccoon (orphaned) witch worked out because I bought a 50 acre property with 6 horses deeper in the country so everyone had room to roam. 86 dogs and 32 cats passed through our hands....people can be the lowest.

u/DrLith Jul 03 '24
Aside from their coats all the puppies look pretty similar in terms of size, ears, facial structure, etc. so I think it's more likely that they've just got a mix of breeds in them and it's a bit of a grab bag which color genes wound up getting expressed. Black is a dominant trait and is present in a lot of breeds, as are the genes for tan points and black sable. That's one reason why color is one of the less useful traits in guessing at breed origin. It's also challenging to get a good sense of breed traits with puppies so young, as their features are less defined. These guys kind of look like shepherd/lab/pitbull (or boxer?) mixes. GSDs carry tan points and black sable so you could easily get those colors just from a GSD/lab cross but their coats and ears make me think there's a bit of some bully breed in the mix as well.

Wish I could add a picture. My girl and ONE littermate were turned in to a shelter before being pulled by the rescue I got her from. She is mostly black with tan markings, similar to a routine, short fur. Her sister is a fluffy chocolate color. Side by side, you can see in their faces they are sisters. But by coloring alone you'd never know.
I don't like to think what happened to their mama and siblings that only 2 were found.

They all have the same overall shape. They could easily be siblings. 100% possible for a litter to have all these colors. Try to look past the colors and see the actual shape and features. Very similar.

looks like same litter. you know dog litters don’t all look identical lol especially if the parents r different breeds. some come out more like a specific parent. they’re really cute, you’re sweet for taking care of them

My new puppy came from a litter that could have had more than one father by the looks of the pups. I’ll have to do a DNA and compare to siblings I’ve connected with through the rescue. This breaks my heart! People can be evil! My last dog had a similar story! Her mom and siblings were found on a rural road in the middle of nowhere Arkansas, where it was obvious they could not have gotten to on their own so the speculation is they were driven there and abandoned, possibly thrown from the car. My pup had fear of cars, she didn’t want to get into or out of the car ever and would whine on car rides a lot. She probably never forgot that cars can equal abandonment trauma 💔

Some look like pitbull/German Shepherd mixes. Others look like pitbull/Border Collie or Rottweiler mixes.

You have every good reason to feel raw about it. Fuck those people indeed, but thank you for taking care of these pups 🧡

I HATE whoever left these pups out there but so thankful that they ended up with you. Healing wishes.

What kind of person does this? Ugh. So glad you found them and are helping.
Also, they are fucking adorable.

Yes I would say they are from the same litter. Depending on the mix, sibling pups can look very different. It doesn’t necessarily mean they have different fathers.

You’re such a wonderful parent. Your child will remember this kindness. They’ll be like you.

I’ve seen plenty of litters like this, often farm little or unplanned litters. I would wager one or both parents are mixed themselves. My own ‘black lab’ as a child came out of a very similar looking litter.

You're a good person to be taking care of them and I HATE the person that dumped them.

They very well could be, but just have different fathers. Or mom and dad just look different and some look more like dad and others mom.

I have two puppies from the same litter. They are brothers and are half monkey's Australian shepherd and half cow chow. They look very different from each other. puppies

A litter of dogs may have several fathers.
