Equipment Buying brewing equipment
Hello everyone, I am planning to buy some equipment to start making beer. There is only one store in town that sells beer equipment, and the employee there recommended some items to me. My question is whether all the equipment he mentioned is necessary for brewing beer. He suggested that I invest in a fridge for fermenting with controlled temperature because it gets too hot here. The equipment he recommended includes: 1)digital boiler 35l 2) Brewferm Chill'in 50 SST wort chiller (for chilling the wort 3)brew bag for the malts 4)wooden mash paddle 5)stainless steel bucket for the hops 6) Fermzilla 27Lt - Starter Kit GEN 3 7) RAPT Temperature controller 8) Temp Twister Pump Kit with Return Line and Clamp 9) Thermowell 60cm 8mm OD - Gen3 8mm Duotight 10) GEN2 Temp Twister Cooling/Heating Coil (for the fermenter) 11)fermentation bucket 20l (for water with glycol ) 12)hydrometer 13) Refractometer Dual Scale Brix - SG 14)measuring cylinder 200ml 15)ph meter 16) PBW Five Star 17) Star San Sanitizer 18) Ball Lock Plastic Carbonation Cap - Kegland 19) Bottling Valve / Tube 20) PVC Hose 21)ball lock liquid connector
And a fridge that I will drill to connect the bucket with the fermenter

Equipment My first dryhop setup
I'm sure there are better ways to do this, but I cobbled together parts on Amazon for less than $100 to dry hop without O2. Loaded 2oz of Citra and it worked great. Could have easily fit 3oz.
Just sharing in case it helps someone else.
Updating with the list of gear I bought. Not including the butterfly valve I already had.

Equipment I'm wondering what is the cheapest method to force carbonate beer using a Corny keg?
So I've brewed 20 litres of beer before and I found it difficult to carbonate the beer using the "carb drops" and I was seriously thinking about buying a corny keg and "force carbonating" beer in the future.
A 19 litre corny keg costs about 100 Euros where I'm from but the 2KG CO2 tank costs about 130 euros which is very expensive to me.
I've read online that you need 2 grams of CO2 for every litre of beer so to carbonate a 19 litre batch in the corny keg would take about 40 grams of CO2. The 2KG tank would last for about fifty 19 litre batches of beer before needing to buy a new tank.
However I've learned about Brewferms CO2 cartridges (12 grams for about 17 Euros) and I'm wondering can they be used instead of the CO2 tank? I just use the CO2 regulator that comes with corny keg?
Are there any downsides to using the cannisters?

Equipment Refilling your own CO2
Not sure if anyone does this, or if some of you even know you can do this, but you can crack open your empty 5lb CO2 tanks and fill them with dry ice to the proper weight. Ends up being anywhere from 30 - 75% cheaper than getting the refill at the local shops depending on your price of dry ice and refill price. Where im at dry ice is $3.49 a pound, and a refill for a 5lb CO2 tank is between $40 and $50. I bought 6.4lb dry ice today for $22 and by the time I got home and got it in the tank I sealed it with 4lb 9oz of CO2. Always get a little extra because it will evaporate quickly. Your tank will frost over pretty quickly. That's normal. Leave it alone over night until it's room temperature
Anyway. Any thoughts? I mentioned this in the beer store the other day and nobody there had heard about it so I thought I'd share.

Equipment Best stainless steel fermenter on a budget
I'm looking for recommendations on the best stainless steel fermenter to pick up soon based on feedback and use. For context, I stopped brewing for a bit after having a little one, and finally back to it now that he's 18-months. I've had a few Fermonsters back in the day and loved them, but kept running into chlorophenolic issues, switched back to glass carboys and haven't had a single issue since. But with a walking kiddo, I'm just not ok with glass anymore.
Any good stainless recs for $150 or so? Would love one with a port for easy kegging if possible, but not a requirement.

Equipment Efficiency
I noticed my mash efficiency was low. After reading lots of comments on here, I invested in a grain mill and wanted to share my experience. I use a Robobrew; 35l temperature controlled boiler with a malt pipe.
Previously I had relied on my local HBS to pre crush grain and was consistently getting a mash efficiency of under 65%, occasionally under 60%. I finely ground my most recent batch and noticed a few things. Milling the grain was no bother. I got a malt muncher and attaching the drive rod to a power drill powered through the whole grain bill in a matter of minutes. Mashing in is definitely more difficult - dough balls are far more of an issue. Sparging was very slow by comparison. I also noticed a lot more grain particles in the wort, outside of the malt pipe. To manage this I manually recirculated - I don't have a recirculation system. So I took around 4l at a time and poured it back though the grain in the suspended malt pipe (before sparging) to filter particles through the grain bed. I suspect this also improved efficiency. I might reduce how finely crushed the grain is to see if that reduces these issues.
The process was definitely a bit more involved and a little more time consuming. However, my mash efficiency went up to 90%. So thanks to the wonderful folks on this sub for the advice they gave others.
TLDR; If your mash efficiency is low, get a grain mill. It's totally worth it.

Equipment How many hydrometers do I buy before investing in a refractometer?
I’ve probably broken about 3 glass hydrometers at this point (not shattered, but cracked enough to be unsanitary). I’ve read/seen that the plastic ones can also be unsanitary, or hard to sanitize properly. Considering investing in a refractometer at this point.

Equipment Torn Between Electric Brewing Systems
I’m looking at switching to an electric brewing system, and I am absolutely torn between the Anvil Foundry 10.5 Gal and the Clawhammer 10 Gal 120V. I feel like I’ve done a good bit of research on both, I have my own pros and cons between the two but I want some other opinions on each system. I’m looking at getting 120V for now as I do not have 240V setup at the moment and don’t want to have to set it up anytime soon.
Anvil Foundry 10.5
Pros: - Price - LHBS has it in stock - Attached hooks to hang malt pipe to drain - Comes with a nice looking immersion chiller - Can swap between 120V/240V out of the box - Hoses don’t have fittings and clamp on, I feel like this could make things easier being more versatile and replacing hoses will be cheaper - Malt pipe has holes on the bottom and I guess they put more up the side to prevent clogging(vs full mesh)
Cons: - No spray nozzle for recirculation, the hose just goes into a hole in the lid - Lower wattage heating element (by 50W for 120V) - Website says it holds less grain(16lbs)
Clawhammer Supply 10 Gal 120V
Pros: - Ability to set the kettle on a burner to speed up heating - They boast that they are easily serviceable if something goes wrong - Control panel is detached - near feature to be able to wall mount or set aside - Spray nozzle built into lid - could also be a con if it clogs - The quick connect fittings are cool, and would be nice for easily moving lines - I’ve heard you can fit 18 lbs of grain in this system
Cons: - Price - a really expensive self heating pot - Not as easy to change to 240V, although doesn’t sound hard just have to buy the parts - I hear plate chillers can be a pain to clean - I’m not a fan of the loose hooks to hold up the grain basket to drain it - Have to order online - Grain basket is all mesh
TL;DR I can’t decide whether or not to go with the Anvil Foundry 10.5Gal or Clawhammer 10Gal 120V and want some people to tell me why they prefer one system over the other, or just tell me I’m overthinking it.

Equipment Searching for an AIO for 10 gallon finish batches.
Title says it all, I'm looking for recommendations for an AIO system that can give me 10 gallons of finished product.
I'm in Canada so a lot of products aren't available for direct shipping.
I'm currently looking at shipping the Digiboil 65L with copper still lid to the border and picking it up myself, Does anyone have experience with this one?

Equipment Spike glycol chiller was disappointing
Just put it in service today. Ordered on the crowd fund they did last year. It is like prototype quality. Screw holes misaligned. Wired wrong. Fan blades bouncing off of everything. Quick connect fittings made no sense. Don't get me wrong, I like Spike and I appreciate that they want to make that tech available at homebrew scale but yeesh. Way too much stress on the day are brewing for the national comp. Shame on me for not function checking ahead of time.

Equipment New Fermenter ideas
I'm looking at getting a new Fermenter, I've used 5/7 gallon buckets up until now with faucets and a hose to drain. I'm not really looking to get a stainless one at this point but I'm considering an All Rounder. I'm not sure I want to get into fermenting under pressure right now or not but I'm curious what people think about using an all rounder as a normal Fermenter and if you use an auto siphon which one?

Equipment Foamy Beer
Just got my komos kegerator put together. I tapped a domestic keg today and it's nothing but foam. Trying to troubleshoot the issue. I've tried serving pressures from 5-12. No change. Just foam. I have a sanke coupler with ball lock QD. Duotight fittings with EVA barrier 4mm ID. Beer line is about 4.5 feet in length. What am I missing here? Why is my beer so foamy?

Equipment Kettle purchase help
I am looking to buy some new equipment and I need some advice. I plan on brewing 5 gallon batches - I want to do all grain. I have been looking at the Anvil Foundry 10.5. I am also thinking about getting a 10 gal pot and doing BIAB. My question is - is it worth getting an AIO or will I be fine with getting a pot, BIAB, and a wort chiller? I like the foundry because it has everything - pump, wort chiller. But I do like brewing outside with propane. I am a new brewer so I don’t know if it’s worth jumping right to a AIO or if it makes more sense to get a bigger pot and go from there. I know I can basically replicate an AIO with getting accessories (pump, sparge arm, etc) with a pot while doing BIAB, but I am sure that will likely cost more in the end.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Equipment UK homebrewers, can you recommend a starter brewing kit under £150
I’m looking to buy myself a starter kit for Christmas. I’ve made ginger beer quite a lot before and looking to get into brewing pales of various styles, sours if they’re not overly complicated and the occasional cider. Mainly pales though!
Have any of you got recommendations on a starter kit and perhaps a book explaining the basics?
Thanks in advance

Equipment Need help deciding. Keg fermenter vs. Fermzilla
Hello. I need help deciding on what route to go. I brew 1.5-2.5 gallon batches and they're primarily hazy ipa's. I'm looking at either buying a Megamouth Torpedo Keg or a Fermzilla.
The thing that I like about the keg is that I won't need to worry about temp control since it'll fit in my fermentation fridge. I plan on having a 2" triclover ferrule welded to the lid so I can use my dry hopper to be able to do oxygen free dry hopping. The one thing i don't like is the inability to dump trub and yeast before dry hopping.
As for the Fermzilla Tri-Conical I like that I'm able to dump trub and yeast before dry hopping. The disadvantage is that I won't be able to fit it in my fermentation fridge, so I'll have to come up with a cooling solution.
Looking at the prices of each, the keg does come in alittle cheaper (depending of the size that I get) than the Fermzilla with a chilling coil. I have a Flot-It that I plan on using in either fermenter. I also have a spunding valve that I can use with either one.
Help me decide what to go with.

Equipment Damaged Anvil Kettle
Hi, a shop in my country is selling this Anvil 20gal kettle with a 20% off because is damaged. I don't live in USA so it is hard to get beer equipment without paying a lot for shipping.
Do you think that the hit this kettle took would reduce it's life span or affect the brew process? ( i need to replace mine becaus I want my system for brewing 10gal batches), not sure if this is worth it, never had dents like that in my kettles. Thanks

Equipment Is there any saving plastic fermenters?
So I bottled what was supposed to be a dark lager today, and made the mistake of only tasting it after bottling. It's completely sour. So obviously at some point during the brew process, I screwed up sanitation.
I normally always use StarSan and give it a good shake around every surface I intend to use that isn't boiled. I also noticed some residue around one of the rubber sealing rings on the fermenter, but I don't want to scapegoat as the only source of contamination. I know plastic fermenter tend to get scratches over time that nasties like to hang out in, so is there any saving them or should I replace them with new equipment?
Also as far as the other tubs/stoppers/etc. go, will simply soaking them in StarSan overnight help rid it of any unwanted crap that could have contaminated this last brew?
Meanwhile, although it might be a sour now, the beer is still safe to drink, right?
