Working as a software engineer in Spain. Visas / Migration

Would working as a software engineer in Spain be worth it for me? I'm from the UK, I speak Spanish conversationally fluently, probably to a B2 level. I think I'm planning on going to Madrid, although I'm open to other suggestions.

How are the salaries? Is there any info you can provide me with? How hard would it be for me to get a visa?

Do you have a visa/sponsor?

Without a job pretty hard to get a Visa. You need a multi nacional ir no point coming.

The salaries in Spain are not great, assuming you land a purely technical role, with no management duties, expect to make 35-55k, depending on seniority and other factors. About the visa process, I'm afraid I can't help you with that.

Try using the search feature in this subreddit.

But in short, lol no.

I'd recommend looking for a remote job and working from Spain, you'll probably be able to get a better salary than working for a Spanish company.

And how would he live here without a visa?

It will be nice not suggesting something that is making Spanish people unable to live in their own country. If you are going to live in this country, do it getting the same salary as its people

Asumiendo, a efectos de la argumentación, que tuvieras razón: ¿para qué sirve el subreddit si no es para contestar semejante pregunta?

You Will sacrifice money for Life quality, depends on whats IS more important to you: being able to enjoy outside Sunny days or travel to bali and thailand once a year.

Software engineer can make anything between 35k to 60k. Thats 2000-3500 per month after taxes. An apartment in Madrid is on 1300. Do your math! Oviously it's better if you move in Spain and work remotly for EU based company.

More like 800 if you're willing to live 20 minutes out of center.

Thats not true unless you rent an old mid-50 apartment of 50m2 with a lot of walls an old desing. If you want a new flat, even in Leganés or Vicálvaro (not that fra away to be hinest) is aroumd 1200. Incthe city center like 2000

Esitimg my comment: I just find a lot of good flats , no luxurys, in Leganés and Vicálvaro for 850-1000. Didnt know , Barcelona is much worst I thought Madrid was the same.

You say sacrifice money, but the top and of that scale sounds quite attractive to me. I earn only slightly more than that but 1300 rent is very cheap compared to London. I'd likely have more disposable income.

2

u/alexx8b Dec 07 '24

A software engineer in London can make 70-100k, rent aroumd 2000 if I am correct. Similar Life Style, but when in london you end the month with more savings, it's like if remt IS bigger, salary IS bigger in proportion, savings are bigger also in proportion.

2000 pounds (around 2400 Euro) would not get you an apartment in the centre of London. You'd have to travel in. I mean you wouldn't necessarily want to live in the centre, I don't. But comparing like for like...

I lived in the UK before, then Netherlands and now in barcelona.

I am Portuguese, I think a lot of people from the south think that working / living in the north is really nice because you earn a shit ton of money, but personal opinion, it’s not

Im earning 55k now, I was earning 85k in nl, my disposable income at the end of the month is nearly the same but my quality of life is way better (I’m also a software engineer btw)

There is an housing crisis here, but there is an housing crisis everywhere.

Everywhere is bad right now to live in, things are at an all time high because of Covid and the war in Ukraine, but, from my own personal experience, things in the UK are by faaar worst then anywhere else in Europe (honestly by now probably even worst then in Portugal)

If you have a chance move, but I would recommend you to get a job in an international company and then move internally in the company, it’s quite hard to move to Spain as an European (burocracy is insane), I can only imagine as not European.

For reference, I was paying 1125 for an 40m2 studio in Leiden, 200 euros bills, 140 euros health insurance (mandatory in NL) Now I’m paying 985 euros for an 83m2 apartment in barcelona +150 euros Bills (I moved last month into the apartment)

Food is cheaper and good, going out is cheaper, weather is nice and the infrastructure is amazing. Taxes are one of the best in Europe (and I don’t have any tax benefit)

The health service is wayyy better then in NL (or the UK now)

985€ for a 83m2, thats not normal in Barcelona, you got Lucky.

1

u/Purple_Ice6612 Dec 08 '24

Well yes and no, luck was and is always involved, but it was also a lot of effort and searching involved!

Idealista is not good, you need to go to the agencies yourself and being likeable is helpful as well.

But this housing crisis is everywhere, it’s bad in barcelona, but when you compare it to Nl or Milan where my gf was, or even in Brighton 4 years ago, it’s not too bad.

What do u understand for worth?

If you come as an expat sure though u will lose money in the process (or not, it depends on the company)

If you are planning to come to Spain to look a job here id not recommend it, housing prices gone wild specially in Madrid and Barcelona (ye ik london might be worse but wages here are pure crap)

u/Grouchy-Shine-6659 Dec 07 '24

No. Spain pays like shit

3

u/lessoner Dec 07 '24

Look into the digital nomad visa if you can find an employer that will let you work remote from Spain

2

u/deeznuuuuts Dec 07 '24

There are some companies in Spain that don’t pay terribly. Datadog is in Madrid and pays decently well

3

u/drakehtar Dec 07 '24

Just don't salaries are shit and rental prices are bonkers

2

u/Daniiar_Sher Dec 07 '24

Yeah I work for a company outside of Spain but live here. Otherwise, you get paid peanuts and work culture sucks

Riot games has an office at the Almeda WTC as we used to share the floor with them. I don't think any of them spoke Spanish natively.

Worth keeping an eye on for vacancies.

Salaries are shit compared to the UK and Brexit has made it much trickier to get a job.

1

u/Ma-da-fa-ka Dec 07 '24

Try looking into companies like Oracle, SAP...they have offices and SE roles, with higher than expected salaries, and they sometimes include relocation packages.

1

u/jbar3640 Dec 08 '24

Madrid should be ok. and Barcelona is a great option too, plenty of tech companies.

1

u/Weak_Interaction_905 Dec 08 '24

Move to Malaga instead, a huge blooming technological companies area (Parque Tecnológico), international companies with better salaries than spanish ones plus probably the best weather in the whole country. If you want to travel you have a really well connected airport. You could land a nice salary with an incredibly leap in life quality.

Do not come to Spain. Spain is currently the titanic economically and socially. You will pay taxes for everything. Such a sham of a lovely country.

u/ashkeptchu Dec 07 '24

You want to live in Spain and work for a foreign company.
