Tbf, Star Wars is Star Wars. I didnt like the new trilogy but I went to the Cinema for every Movie they put out, i watched every Series more than once and i will continue doing so cause it’s Star Wars. Shitty Star Wars Media is still Star Wars Media 🤷♂️
That doesnt work for ND tho, their games are just all good.
32
u/Librarian_Contrarian 22h ago
I have more than my share of criticisms of how Disney has handled Star Wars, and Rise of Skywalker is, to me, the worst Star Wars movie, but I can't consider TLJ a failure in any sense except maybe in the failure of what came after to follow up on it.
28
u/Chazo138 21h ago
People knock on TLJ but at least it did something different than repeating ESB like TFA did for ANH.
29
u/Librarian_Contrarian 21h ago
I really felt like it was SW stepping put to say "these stories don't HAVE to be about just Skywalkers and Palpatines, The Jedi and The Sith, forever and ever. We can do whatever we want."
And then the series about-faced and said, "actually, Star Wars is ONLY about Skywalkers and Palpatines, false alarm."
8
u/CreamofTazz 18h ago
People also still argue heavily over the merits (and demerits) of TLJ, whereas most people seem to agree that TFA was mid to okay if only just a ANH rehash and TRoS seems to be mostly hated.

u/BrockStar92 13h ago
So I guess I dreamed the Hoth ripoff but at the end rather than the beginning? I suppose it was salt not snow, big difference… Oh and the main Jedi character being trained in the force by the old curmudgeonly Jedi in a remote location with an area of the dark side they venture into and see a depiction of themselves there, that didn’t happen either?
There were a lot of parallels between ESB and TLJ.
7
2
u/SufferingClash 45m ago
TLJ is the best of the sequel trilogy, which sadly isn't a hard bar to clear considering the final film. It gave us a lot to chew on, and had IMO the best moments from the sequel trilogy. Too bad JJ Abrams basically spent an entire movie retconning TLJ and effectively making the entire sequel trilogy a flop.

u/No_Mud_5999 21h ago
Yes, my friends' wife is very straightforward on her SW appreciation "I like wookies and cute droids and escapist sci-fi fantasy, I'm not very critical". I found this to be a refreshingly honest viewpoint for what is essentially light entertainment.
19
u/Da_Question 23h ago
Yeah, I mean Star Wars is carried heavily by the nostalgia factor, that and the insane budget Disney puts into their stuff, even if the writing is meh, the visuals are good.

Yes, it making a billion would definitely count as a success. But you also have to consider the fact that Episode 7 made 2 billion...and by that metric some (ie: the suits) might very well have deemed that failure due to its inability eclipse the previous film financially.

I never forgot how that game also got nominated for "People's Choice" at the Game Awards.
40
u/magictuch 22h ago
The game won the most GOTY awards that year both by critics and players vote.
It is to this date one of the most awarded games of all time. Sold millions on the platform and now will sell some more after its PC release.
The numbers were bonkers especially considering how the game is kinda niche with it being a zombie game with 18+ rating.
1
42
u/JacktheDM 22h ago
No, not only "sold milions." Won hundreds of Game of the Year awards. Broke major sales records across the board. Was absolutely praised like crazy by critics, fans, and is going to get adapted into an HBO show that will doubtlessly itself be nominated or win tons of major awards.
TLoU2 is, for me, almost the chief indicator that these people live in a parallel universe.
Pure consumerism is their only value, and yet they just have no idea that this particular game is one of the most successful and beloved by 99% of anyone who's encountered in over half a decade now.
13
u/Suavecore_ 21h ago

And I hate to be that guy, but Last of Us 2 was a way better game than 1 was.
Yeah, 1 had a signifcantly better story, but man it was a slog to geth through. TloU 2 has super cool encounters through the game with awesome level design with more verticality. Actually enjoyed playing it, unlike 1.
-4
u/manic_misfit 10h ago
Does the fact that it sold 10 million make it a success? Absolutely.
But it still barely sold half of what the first game did. And for an industry that depends on infinite growth, I could see how it might be perceived as a failure in that regard.5
u/TheWorldsKing 6h ago
The Last of Us sold 20 million across two systems and a seven year span (2013-2020). Part II has sold 50% of that in half the time

-31
u/MassiveEdu 1d ago
its not a masterpiece, like it definitely isnt but it has wonderful gameplay, i seriously disliked the story (it felt nonsensical, everything felt like it was exclusively done to just keep drawing dogshit paralels between the protagonists, the events of the story dont feel like shit thatd go down remotely naturally, ellie and abby were unlikeable, tommy and joel behaved like utter morons, dina was an annoying character, the fact that ellie only starts regretting anything. the way the characters just. travel through half the country and iirc theres nothing beyond that aside from ellie mentioning that LV was completely overrun by the infected, the way that both factions are just too exaggerated, the way the story stems from how neil wanted some palestinians killed after 2 idf soldiers were killed in the early 2000s (interview btw), which also relates to the factions with the seraphites being a zionist palestinian stereotype, etc etc
i would never say its a bad game because in the sense of playing it , it is great, but the level designs are also beyond hillcrest and captiol hill, quite nonsensical, for example the level where abby is leaving the aquarium, the flooded area right by the alaskan way viaduct, makes no sense, the entire geography of the area is weird with some ground having somehow risen up, this is only a minor example of the bizarre shit in that game's level/environmental design
theres areas like the previously mentioned hillcrest which are TRULY perfect level design beyond some relatively minor issues w the house designs (theres one or two that dont even have a bathroom or bedroom iirc), but from a gameplay standpoint it is wonderful, and i cannot stress this enough, capitol hill and hillcrest are the two single most enjoyable areas in the entire game, as well as santa barbara, which as much as i dislike the game's ending, the design for the town itself all around is quite good, the environmental design is superb, with the amount of foliage actually making sense in contrast to the areas of seattle that were actually part of the QZ (not counting hillcrest since it was external to the zone IIRC) with the exception of capitol hill, which from what i remember the only part with an extremely overblown amount of trees was the area around the TV station, with the combat in the school being also very well designed
It is not a masterpiece in my eyes, although it does look good, and plays good, the characters, map design and story drag it down21
u/Embarrassed_Bit_7424 1d ago
It's a masterpiece. It's sort of a consensus thing. A lot of people agree that it's a masterpiece so that's what it is. Even my opinion personally is that it's a masterpiece, to the point that if it had been written by Tony Morrison, it would be considered among the book awards.
I don't like the Great Gatsby. I've read it twice. I hate it. It's a Masterpiece of literature.

This was due to people review bombing in the first few hours the game was live. No one takes the meta critic user score seriously in the first place. If you go where people actually have to own the game, the user score is overwhelmingly positive across way more reviews.

And before anything , i do not have an issue with joel getting killed nor would i say he was a good person, only that his actions were reasonable, yes, i find saving ellie to have been a reasonable action because the fireflies had only had her for a day and were willing to throw away the only known immune person in the world to magically make a vaccine, i never found myself able to sympathise with abby on that regard because her dad was to kill a child for something not even actual institutions with proper equipment and funding could do (refer to the cinematic in part 1 after hometown ends and sarah dies)

Tbf, I heard it was garbage.... from sources (most likely youtube if I remember rightly)
I never played TLOU games, heard the first one was a masterpiece but the 2nd one was garbage due to the ending?
Finally when the games came to steam, never bothered buying it because what I heard killed all the hype I had for the games.
Sounds like what I heard might've been bollocks but it shows the power of circlejerking,
13
u/ZubatCountry 22h ago
TLOU1 has an all-timer ending, that is unfortunately so effective that some people walk away from it missing the point.
TLOU2 doesn't hold Joel in the same reverence that some of those fans did, because despite what they'll tell you he was not objectively in the right and the second game almost literally bludgeons you over the head with this.
There are very legitimate pacing and story issues with TLOU2, but you'd really have to reach to call it bad and the idea that it's this trash fire that failed is...not in line with reality to put it mildly.

I feel like something people are missing is that a lot of these "Gamers" aren't American.
It's not an excuse for bigotry or shitty behavior.
But like, if you come from or are in a male dominated country/culture, seeing realistic women might actually be a detriment.
If you were raised with zero respect for women in a culture/country that has zero respect for women..... what do you expect?
Like the balding chud sub. I think like 65% of his viewers are non American. A lot from East Asia.

It's about time you Muricans realize that you are the only country who literally divided in two ultra-polarized factions fighting each other over that game. The rest of the world generally loved the game or at most were okay with it... the few who disliked it didn't really make a consistent group and certainly did not do the same pathetic shitshow haters did in the US.
And TLoU2 is just one example, but you did the same for several other pieces of fiction. It's kinda hilarious to see the patterns from the outside.

Only backlash I heard about was that some folks were worried if game wouldn’t be little generic - but it’s Naughty dog, so being optimistic is not incorrect. On the other hand - I think “failure” was in quotes, so this may be ironic? Or they’re getting self-conscious? But this person has Japanese in their profile and wrote Joel in German (?)(so more like Yoh-el?) - is this some Axis-themed grifter-gamer ploy?
1
u/Shadowchaos1010 21h ago
The "backlash" is based on absolutely nothing substantive because it was the announcement trailer of a new IP. Nothing established being changed for you to whine about like Witcher, and no gameplay to call clunky or anything because there was none.
You're bitching about the fact that the main character isn't a man or sexy to you. What other response to that do you expect other than "Oh no! Anyway..."

Only bad thing about TLOU2 is that ultra mega zionist weirdo Neil Druckman made it

Look I may hate last of us with a burning passion, but its a completely different reason. I just dont like how many times the series has been re-released in like 10 years

I’ll crack it, can’t really afford to buy new releases at the moment, but I definitely wanna play it. And I hope it’s fun game, not like Veilguard

No matter how you feel about Intergalactic, you can’t deny actors responding to backlash against them/ the project on Social Media isn’t good. We saw how that ended with the Cowboy Bebop remake.
